I had one. It's basically just the component signal converted to HDMI, so it's still only going to be 480i with most games. It says it supports up to 1080i, that's only games that support 1080i, like Gran Turismo 4. It is a little darker, but you can change the settings on your TV. If you are looking for a cheap way to hook up to an HDTV, this does do the job. There are cheap component cables which look about the same if your TV has component input, but the cheaper component cables usually are not shielded properly and you hear a constant hum in the background so I still think this is a better cheap option, though there's definitely better if you want to spend a lot of money. The only thing I will add is that mine only lasted about 2 months before it died on me. So that's something else to consider. I might have just been unlucky, though.

toothball_elsewhere

That point about 480i is noteworthy. I bought one to try to plug a PS2 into a capture card, but it turned out my capture card has a minumul resolution of 480p, so it only worked with games that support progressive scan. I ended up getting a Retrotink instead.

Phil_McCafferty

I got one very recently....no problems/issues so far. (Edit)....I feel that I need to clarify that I'm using my particular HDMI converter on a PAL region slim PS2....and it runs without needing to use the consoles USB power supply.

JColesPHole

I’m not sure what Sony television we have, but Mum got it 2 months ago, so it’s new. Would using this actually support 480i? I got the AV2HDMI and that thing won’t work even after trying to change the format and everything. PS2 slim is the console.

Odd-Blacksmith167

Sony TVs from X9000h onwards suck at PS2 display all browns are black making some games unplayable. I have tried 6 of those hdmi 2 ps2 converters and a retroscallerx2. Either find a old crt tv or buy a cheap $70 mini projector from AliExpress

Henry_Merrit

Good idea.

the13j

i got one but it never worked, had to buy other type

Phil_McCafferty

I recon I just got lucky with mine. Like compatibility between converter and type of TV that I have. I'm not very technically savvy so can't really offer any help. I just bought the cheapest converter and thankfully it works.....for now.

cdf_sir

yes this adapter usually can just be powered via HDMI's 5v Power assuming that your TV is providing more than enough power to operate that PS2 HDMI adapter. Some TVs dont so its a case of YMMV.

Vegetable_Net_6354

It works but the image quality, colours and black levels are all a mess.

-Valken-

Yeah its alright for the price [photo](https://i.imgur.com/kYnRf2x.jpeg) Slim 9000 doesnt need the mini usb

LogeViper

I bought one for cheap and got very lucky. It’s capable of up to 1080i resolution with very clean image, and the lower resolutions also looks great. I’ve heard some say this stretches 480i to 1080p but that doesn’t seem to be true (at least in my case) as the image doesn’t look blurry whatsoever. But there’s a plethora of manufacturers for these adapters, so you never know what quality you’ll be getting, you just have to be lucky I guess. Mine came in this identical box of the photo, so maybe looking for those is most certain of being a good quality one?

CaterpillarPuzzled50

Tried one recently on my 55” samsung and it wasnt quite satisfied - image came out relatively “blurry” and floating at points around objects or text. It does work but for those money you cant get same picture as if you used expensive gear like other do use retrotink etc. Or signal converter. The original component cables for the ps2 gave me shockingly good and crisp, vibrant experience on my way older 40’ samsung from 2010.

Typical_Confusion_28

I have the Bitfunx converter which was recommended and it gets the job done. Its a 24 year old console so you can’t really expect it to be flawless on modern tvs.

Klorontix

Yes, it worked for me! But hooking up to a CRTV is still the best picture quality. But this does the job just fine.

Javerage

Causes way darker images and at times delays that'll break combos/perfect timing hits.

viper4011

This. I couldn’t stand to use it for the darker image.

Best-Performance3872

I have one it's pretty good to play on a modern tv and i never had problems or issues with it

AustrianReaper

They work. The experience isn't great, since it's blurry, sometimes laggy in general I found it disappointing, tried another one, was still disappointed and in the end shelled out for a retrotink which I adore. What I'm getting at is: ask yourself if you can't afford to save up for a retrotink, to get an experience deserving of your memories :) But if you really just want to get a cheap way to hook up your ps2, this will do the job.

realhabitszs

I do. It's pretty good

Warden_Memeternal

I use a Kaico branded one. Does the job pretty well. Obviously not as good as a Retrotink but unless you're willing to shell out for one of those, these are the next best option.

Retro_Prime

Been using one for a while. No complaints. Doesn't work on my slim ps2s, but on the fat, it's perfect.

hollow_digger

It doesn't work? I have a slim and it does. To avoid the need for the external power, I just grabbed a 5v line and hooked it to the 5v pin on the av multi out. To make things easier, I connected the usb 5v to pin 10 in the av multi out. It works lovely.

Agile-Hat-9467

i have a slim and connected external power to it (the ps2tohdmi) and i think it bricked my external power brick. how do you mean you avoided the need for the external power by connecting the usb 5v to the pin 10 in the av multi out?

hollow_digger

I opened it. Sorry, should have been more clear. I made a bit of an homebrew mod. I soldered internally a wire from one of the usb ports to pin 10. It is a very easy thing to do. It made me angry that they placed the power input right next to where the slim power connector is.

Agile-Hat-9467

Yeah that power input placement is very annoying. I guess what I was wondering was if your redesign fixed the common issue of games demanding too much power suddenly and frying certain parts of the power supply in the ps2 or external power adaptor due to being already under strain from the ps2tohdmi. My power adaptor broke possibly due to this and so I was wondering if what you did could've prevented this? I used the mini usb cable that came with it to power it using my strong phone charger instead of the usb ports on the console. that might've had something to do with it?

hollow_digger

I do not believe there's a game that suddenly causes an electrical spike that breaks the power supply. Things don't work that way. The PS2 Slim power brick is an amazing piece of tech. I use one to power my Power of Tower (Mega drive + Mega cd + 32x). If it broke, I'd look at the wall plug. The PS2HDMI is not demanding in terms of power, and it would be the same as connecting something to a usb port, like a thumb drive. You can have two memory cards, two gamepads, two USB devices all connected at once with any game and the power supply can handle it no problem. The Amperage the thing delivers is way over what realistically the PS2 slim might demand.

Agile-Hat-9467

what could it be about the wall plug that would cause this? I am in Australia so we get 240v to ours mains but the wall plug might be less. Im afraid to check as it might break my tool. My power brick is rated up to 240v according to its datasheet on its face so. just spitballing here but could it be because I plugged the strong phone charger into the ps2hdmi instead of using the usb port on the PS2?

Agile-Hat-9467

sorry about the ama.

MadKlaw2021

I have one of these types of adapters that I got from Amazon. I had a different adapter that died really quickly, but now I unplug from power source after each play to ensure longevity as I heard some still pull power when the console is off. I don't plug mine into the console itself for power, though.

CursedSnowman5000

I did and it was a travesty. The screen would parodically flicker and some times the color wouldn't even come through.

Pretend-Associate493

The BEST one I have found that works on my tv, it's a 55 inch Sony 4k Oled, is called NyDiDjer. This is from Amazon where I got it: Brand: NyDiDjer 3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 15 Component to HDMI Converter with Scaling Function, YPbPr to HDMI Converter for DVD/NGC/Wii/VHS/PS2 to Display on HDMI TVs(Not for 240P Retro games). You do have to have the cable with the 5 outputs and it does 1080 and 720p @ up to 120hrtz. I believe it's 120 but defenitly 60. It's on Amazon and the cost is $42.99 in the US. BEST ITSM I EVER BOOUGHT FOR MY PS2! The pic at the top of the post works but it makes everything super dark where this looks better than the original game especially with the upclscaling. Trust me it's worth every penny. Please let me know what you think of it if you buy one.

Pretend-Associate493

Thank you to whomever did the upvote! It really is the best ever. Not sure how to share a screen shot. If anyone knows please tell me how. This is from my ohone btw

pkxsh420

5 years + No problems

CindyStroyer

I got the cheapest one I could on eBay for 5 dollars (AUD) first one broke second one still going and it's perfectly average and ok

MEGA_TOES

I just use a CRT or a flat screen with RCA cables, I have a adapter for my Wii, no complaints there

ColonelPlop

I haven't had any problems with mine after about 3 years. I'm not too picky about picture quality, though.

DeroZaza

I bought it and I am very satisfied. No noticeable input lag and the images looks good on a LG C2 OLED. How good a 480i image will look depends on your TVs upscaling.

_LoudOnly

I have it. Does what it needs to do. Nothing spectacular but gets the job done for cheap👍.

DarKminevgear

I use an off branded one. Gets the job done well enough, havent had any problems yet at around 500hrs playtime.

Icy-Society6342

I do recommend Retrotink 2x instead

Aggressive_Ad_2926

I used one but i wont recommend it if you want to use it with the slim because you got to power it with mini usb. The mini usb ports gets blocked by the cable from the power brick on the slim

Warden_Memeternal

They don't have to be powered by the console itself.

kikosho_UwU

It depends. I have this adapter and using it on my PAL PS2 it doesn't need any extra power, but on my NTSC-J PS2 it does.

sKullsHavezzz

Oh right, thanks!

RainbowNuggets

It fits, dont listen to them

Phil_McCafferty

Might be due to transmission type (NTSC or PAL). I'm using my converter on a PAL system PS2 slim and it powers up without needing USB power.

RainbowNuggets

i use it on the slim no issue, just a lil bit of a tight fit but it fits

geistmensch

get a prebuilt GBS Control instead

Kaosma

>Gbs control, around a hundred bucks, give or take >this, 10 Thats like saying dont buy a Corolla, Buy a Mercedes Brabus instead.

geistmensch

prebuilds go for 50-70€ you're speaking about OSSC Don't waste your money for crap dongles like that. Get a CRT tv instead.

Aznkid367

Honestly if you want to experience the graphics the way it was intended. You’re better off getting a CRT. Of which you can find on Facebook marketplace or a yardsale if you really take a look around. I personally prefer 480i on a CRT tv. As opposed to any form of upscaling.

jigglethewire

Way too dark even with the brightness on my TV turned up. I went back to components and though the picture isn't quite as good, I can at least see everything.

levinyl

Yes

username404_

I bought one and it left burn in on my monitor, but it could be that it was a faulty one idk

bernardoh73

I use it on a 43" tv and looks good

Starkiller_Sid7

Yes, but max output is 576i

Skate_faced

Expect budget quality. Decent budget, though. Best used with smaller TVs.

Correct-Thought6156

If it only works with the RGB mode then I'd avoid. Only the ones that work with YPbPr mode will make ps2 games look their best

TremTremm

I have in the past. I think one of the issues is that it did not work with PS1 games played on PS2.

NewToBeUsed

Yes this works for me, now that I have a 4k TV does anyone know a better one and one that outputs 4k?

Mixtape623

Mine was trash, didn't fit properly in the port and would have inconsistent visuals when it did work

Lambert1551

Me, no dark image issue

flashoflight69

I have a Hyperkin.

Stairway_To_Devin

I use one, it looks pretty bad but it was also only a couple bucks so cant complain

Sven_Gildart

I had mine worked for a year. Then it wouldn't work anymore (was always losing signal). And the next 4 replacements I bought don't work well either. I troubleshooted as much as I could but I eventually gave up on this one.

Caolan114

I have It, the usb port on the PS2 powers It nicely but I can't set my PS2 upright

DeviateBavon3

There trash

AllStarSuperman_

Get the LevelHike one. It lets you choose the ratio so the image doesn’t get stretched

Cynfreh

Didn't even think this was a thing.

stevorkz

Na. It’s perfect for someone who simply doesn’t have any AVI ports for sure. As for getting a better signal which sadly is how these devices are marketed, it doesn’t and sometimes depending on who the manufacturer is and how they manufactured the device, the picture has been reported to be worse. If it works for your needs though that’s great.

MouldySandwicho

I've got one. Sound quality is muffled on my one. Not sure if its faulty though.

zuweyy

Yes. And the max resolution is 576i i guess. It's been a long time i haven't turned it on. And it needs an external usb cable to make it work( i just plug on the ps2 usb port ).

shaggmoney

I got a levelhike brand from Amazon works great, got one for my dreamcast to.

Cybrus_Neeran

It works fairly well, I found another called a pound cable, it has a built in upscaler, and I dont notice any input latency. But this one covers the basics! I just couldn't capture my PS1 games without the upscale.

qwertyuiop924

It *works*... I think I had issues with PS1 games that used 240p though. Definitely spring for an OSSC or a FrameMeister if you can though. In particular, a FrameMeister is much better for the PS2 because it has a framebuffer and can do things like actually good deinterlacing, but I have an OSSC and it works fine for most games and looks great. It *does* suffer from the Chrono Cross problem though, so in the rare case where you try to play a game like CC that switches resolution during play it's not great.

Electro03

I highly don't recommend this, Mine broke and it won't display correctly

betrayal_Knew

Lol mine made my games all have a weird green tint for some reason.

driverdis

Most don’t work with PS1 games unless you force 480p via GSM homebrew.

IlIllIllIIIlllIIIII

I use this to connect it to my monitor Works really well except for ps1 games

Mandatedhat

I got one a while back. Not sure what brand it was but it works well. The only issue is that I have to use Painters tape to keep it in place but I think that may be an issue with the PS2 port side not the adapter itself

lazykitten2

I had one and thought it was awful, they’re really bad at darker colours, black was almost a light grey. I bought one to play Gran Turismo 3 and it made the roads blend in with everything else. Unplayable, although it depends on what setup you are running, I am using a 32” 4K monitor and no matter how I adjusted the settings I just couldn’t get it even close to how it should be, I spent a little more on a Kaico adapter and the colours and definition seem to be a lot better for a budget adapter

Orlando11281

I got one but not very happy with literally had just got it yesterday and been testing it out , it’s alright if you want to cheap out but I read that on amazon an hd retrovision component cables for ps2 and a portta component to hdmi adapter would work better so I’m waiting for to come in, gonna return this one I didn’t like how it fit in my ps2 90001 it feels forced into the display port

retroland74

Yes but I can't have 4:3 on my Sharp only stretched 16:9 😑

RazzeeX

I have three of them. No issues.

Dangerous-View-4943

I have one and it works on my fat model and slim model and both are Japanese ps2 only problem tho is i have to unplug my power cord for the slim to get the video

lokregarlogull

Yup works ok

nolemretaWxd

i have one, it's not bad, but it doesn't output in higher resolution, simple adapter.

shawner136

I actually quite like mine. For whatever thats worth. Theyre a little finicky to get to stay in the AV port and the cord provided (i-Link port?) certainly leaves something to be desired but I feel like its improved some games, and in my experience it looks better on my flat screen than the normal AVs did NOTE: I have a big boi ps2, not certain this will work for a slim

DotMatrixHead

Yep

Nelmquist1999

Bought one so I could play GH3. It's working very well, surprised they thought about this when TV's evolved.

Glassmerlin

I had one and it was shitty. Had to prop something under it because the weight of it would screw up the connection or the solder joints were wonky. Got the Hyperkin cable instead and have had a much better experience with it.

Divinedragn4

I spent more money on these than I have when i got my ps3 frankied.

RetroMr

Huge latency. These are cheap chips which are meamt to be use for upscaling movies not games.

Tounage

Retrotink 2X-Mini

hauntedhentai

Doesn't work

allthedarkspaces

it's not bad for the price but I got a Kaico hdmi adapter and I enjoy it much more. one of big problems with these adapters here is they stick way out in the back of your tv and put stress on the AV port. Kaico adapters have a cord between them plug for av and the other end that you plug hdmi in, plus you can switch between rgb and component mode with it, so definitely worth a little extra around $25 hand I love it . combined it with gsm with free mcboot and putting that 480p makes a difference.

Historical-Edge-7760

Some older HD (not even that old, like 2016) cheaper flatscreens have component inputs. Go on ebay and find Monster Component Cables. It looks amazing insane.

Vita_wetter

throw this junk away and use a propper scan converter or hdmi mod your console.

Hot-Watch-1932

Trash asf

akshay--11

it was working fine for me but all of sudden when in was playing god of war the screen turned green in colour it works but it has a green tint in it , product quality is not good but for that price it is best and cheap option

AssistantDependent57

I use aether sx it goes up to 1080 4k

Superdboy4

I got one but it never worked sadly.

Henry_Merrit

It's better to get a crt tv.

ardauyar

It works great mine supports 480i, 570i, 480p, 1080i basically everything

Davethemann

Not this, but some other AV to HDMI setup I got at a walmart a while back It kinda works better on a smaller screen with all the imperfections

Murky_Introduction47

Macho Nacho on Yt just dropped a video yesterday for the internal and easy to install DAC HDMI converter . Its $19

SexyDivasRoyalty2

Yeah I use it on my ps2 slim makes games looks great

SmeikMcSmekSnek

I have tried a couple of cheap converters from amazon, but they were all garbage. Found out about the Pound converter from an older post from this sub and I'm pretty happy with it.

dat_boy_lurks

It's like a annoyed handy from your girl. It'll do what it's supposed to do, but it's a chore that requires workarounds, you'll feel like maybe you should of just gotten something more substantial but then realize you don't particularly care that much once it's going on

JackaBoss86

So then the question is… which one should you buy,

BrownBag-Special

Yes! It’s legit! Love mine! Got it a month ago and it’s a free McBoot memory car as usb drive for ISO’s

No_Repro_

I had bad luck with a few converters. Ended up going to a local game shop and found a fully backwards compatible PS3 FAT for ~250. Solved all my basic problems.

RC-1138BOSS

Nah. I just use component cables on a TV that has both component and hdmi ports

somerandomdude419

My tv only has a weird adapter thing for av cables, not even component. It works fine. I also have the component to hdmi box, I don’t like it because it requires an external power source to run. Versus the adapter it’s right through the tv itself

UnwariestPie52

What is it

SweetTooth275

Had the same one. Picture was ok, but it's made veery poorly, you can't open it if it brakes (which it might). Id opt for something better
