Got back together a couple of years ago. Actually interviewed Danny on my podcast last year.
Saw them when they played the UK about 20 years ago, they support headlined a Capdown show. Half the audience left after Capdown, their loss, they were great.
Brilliant! I actually prefer capdown, but love AAA too and definitely would have stayed, I first saw capdown about 20 years, must have been just before my time.
I used to like Descendents but anymore I just can’t listen to them. It all feels so childish, and I know they walked back the incel lines, but they’re still in the recordings and it ruins a lot of their songs for me.
Who would have thought a band with the sond I don't wanna grow up and enjoy would be too childish. The were kids when they wrote the "incel" songs and didn't know how to process shit. They did grow up and have changed.
Yeah, agreed. My criticism isn’t of their character, it’s of their work. And a lot of it still has that shit in it, even if they’re different people now. Just feels weird being an adult listening to that.
If it "feels weird being an adult listening to that", then their music wasn't for you to begin with 🤷♂️ Isn't a massive part of their "thing" that being an adult doesn't mean growing up and you can still laugh at farts and stuff?
I mean, I guess, that’s just never been funny to me. I think at a formative age I had some incelly ideas floating around in my head, and listening to Descendents validated those ideas to me. Thankfully now I know those ideas are wrong, but I don’t feel right going back listening to it anymore. It makes me feel gross. I don’t think this was their intent, nor do I have any negative feelings for Descendents fans, but I’m just not one of them anymore.
That's fine, I get where you're coming from. I'm getting some "I'm too cool/good for that" vibes which is kinda lame but to each his own. But you also don't have to like everything of course, I was just a lil curious
Appreciate the cordiality. It’s really not that “im too good for this,” it’s more that “my enjoyment for this artist came from a negative place.” I’m not in that place anymore, and listening to them only rehashes my shame for the feelings and attitudes I used to have.
Ah yeah that sheds more light on that too. Again, totally get it. And to be clear I'll walk back the "too good for that" thing, didn't mean it maliciously to begin with, but that was just the first impression and this reply makes more sense.
And I appreciate the civil conversation, those are hard to come by (and it's sad that I even think to acknowledge it like civility is something special).
Thanks, I appreciate it as well.
I only posted my original reply because I’ve always been curious if anyone else had a similar experience with their music. I’m sure the majority of their fans are mature enough to know that shit like that isn’t okay, but for the young masculine punks, I’m not sure that they do. Especially since alpha-male/incel rhetoric is so popular now among young men. I could be totally wrong there though.
And I feel the same way about groups like Choking Victim/Leftover Crack. Aside from Stza being a complete asswipe, if I’m sober now then why would I listen to music about smoking crack? It feels disingenuous.
The Dickies are pretty great still, and I’ve never seen them in person but I watched the Adicts play on the Coachella stream last night and they sounded fucking *amazing*.
The Grim
Agnostic Front
Crown of Thornz (on the occasion they even play)
Adolescents
Madball
EDIT: to add, I’ve seen just about every band that OP mentioned minus Zero Boys, and they all crush live, you won’t regret seeing them.
Either way, I think one of the biggest punk bands on the planet can take a little shit from people who don’t like them. I’m surprised they’ve still got loyal fans after only playing their own expensive ass fests for the last almost 10 years but then I’m not considering how some pop punk fans are.
Where the fuck did I say anything about them not being a real punk band or it not being ok that they are popular? Great they are popular, and I’m not denying they are a punk band. I don’t get it, but fuck it.
Agnostic Front sounded pretty good. You're 100% correct about Negative Approach, they kinda made Adolescents sound kinda tired, but nah they were solid too. Bouncing Souls sounds great too. Pennywise was solid when I saw them last year.
I saw Bad Religion and Social Distortion on Friday and they both sounded great. Mike might have slowed down a bit, but after the year he went through, it was still awesome.
Cock Sparrer tops this list no questions asked.
Slapshot
Agnostic Front
Outside of a tiny handful of bands though I can’t think of many reasons why I’d pay MORE to see fourty year old and older has been bands play when I can pay a fraction of that to see whatever is cool and exciting now.
I saw DOA last night and they are still pretty fucking good. Joe is the only original member but the current lineup is awesome and have been together for a long time now (probably at least a decade?).
Saw Pennywise and Dropkick Murphys last month. They were both awesome. Saw Adolescents and Descendents last week (Circle Jerks were supposed to play but Joey C wasn't feeling well) and they both kicked ass too. Going to see Bad Religion and Social Distortion next month too.
I don't know why, but I find GBH live very boring. Have seen them 3 times now and every time I've left for some food or something. Think they're a pretty good band and have some amazing songs, but they seem so dull live. They don't put up a show or anything.
That's not what a legacy band means. And either way, they are no longer writing music. They released their last studio album. And they are on their final tour.
I love NOFX but I don’t buy this being their final tour for one second, they may take some time off but once those lucrative offers start coming in, it’s show time
In between what tours. This is their final/farewell tour. Maybe they balk on that, but for all intents and purposes they're done touring after this year.
They're still supposed to release Half Album I think. And someone else claimed a-z and one other.
It doesn't really matter to me, I only like a handful of their songs. Someone said they aren't a legacy band because they're still writing new music and touring, and I was just saying doesn't make them any less of a legacy band.
As someone who’s seen nofx through the years, they are nowhere near as good as they were . Bad Religion and SLF are just as good as they were in their prime
No they don’t, they had their spotlight and now they are rehashing the oldies. There are plenty of newer bands worth supporting over any band on that list.
“Legacy”? Great, just what we needed, a new sub-genera to endlessly debate, argue, and gate-keep over. What are the pre-reqs? Bands must have at least one original member, celebrate “40th anniversary” albums by playing the thing in it’s entirety live, and say something like “you guys remember 19__” before playing a certain song- to which everyone cheers as if they were actually attending shows when they were 6.
Now cue the dude who is going to try and convince us he really was 6 and at CBGBs or Gilman for “that one show” because they had “cool parents”.
Subhumans is probably the best. Against All Authority is active as well.
The hardest working Legacy band imo. And always taking new bands with them on tour
And I like how they still come all the way to the US and play shows that are still under $20 instead of just festivals or shows I can't afford.
Dick would always come back to a punk house in Philly and hang out with everyone every time they played Philly.
Yeah, one of the bands you want to see do great until they stop touring. I buy merch forsure. They deserve it
Was on a couple Subhumans tours where they took new bands out (worked with one of them) it was dope.
Didn't know AAA were still playing. Doubt they'll ever play UK, mind.

Bad religion and rancid
Circle Jerks
Descendents
Why did I have to go this far down before they were listed?
Yeah I saw them play with NOFX a couple years ago and they had the better set.
Just saw them on the 31st and they were fucking amazing.
I used to like Descendents but anymore I just can’t listen to them. It all feels so childish, and I know they walked back the incel lines, but they’re still in the recordings and it ruins a lot of their songs for me.

Samiam!
They put on an excellent show!
Bouncing souls
The Grim Agnostic Front Crown of Thornz (on the occasion they even play) Adolescents Madball EDIT: to add, I’ve seen just about every band that OP mentioned minus Zero Boys, and they all crush live, you won’t regret seeing them.
L7
Jawbreaker
DOA, SLF, Ch3, Shattered Faith, Dr. Know, Adicts, Cocksparer, Misfits, Die Kreuzen (as the Crosses)
The Adicts are so dope live.
Bad Religion Pennywise Stiff Little Finger
Saw SLF live in Newcastle last month, one hell of a show
I’m excited to finally see SLF at punk rock bowling this year
Dead Milkmen
Holy shit. Can’t believe they’re still making new music
The Kids (Belgium) The Zeros The Mummies The Damned Devo
The new Cock Sparrer album goes so hard.
It’s amazing. Same with the recent Evil Conduct record
Their best in years
I’d love to add Circle Jerks to this list too, Keith’s voice has held up marvelously for a man of his age and health. And Greg shreds still, obviously
Circle Jerks for sure. I've seen them twice in the past year & it blows my mind that Keith still can belt like he can.
How does Joey Castillo play so fucking fast at his age?
Right?!
X predates most of the these acts and they sound better than ever
I remember when Alphabetland came out unexpectedly, and it’s one of their best albums
Strung Out Propagandhi Lagwagon Descendents Buzzcocks (Steve Diggle is still cool)
Propagandgi is so good live
May I ask what's the issue with NOFX right now?
Probably cause they're retiring. If you don't see them now you won't be able to.
Until the reunion tour
[удалено]
Nobody’s saying that.
[удалено]
I have, but haven’t seen a single person complain that a punk band can’t get popular. I hate NOFX, but nobody’s saying they aren’t a real punk band.

Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuts
GB is still around?!
They usually do black and blue in NYC every year. They continue to kick ass.
They’re playing Punk Rock Bowling this year.
The Kids
100%. The Kids were beyond great on their tour of the west coast in December.
Agnostic Front sounded pretty good. You're 100% correct about Negative Approach, they kinda made Adolescents sound kinda tired, but nah they were solid too. Bouncing Souls sounds great too. Pennywise was solid when I saw them last year.
John Brannon sounds more raw and savage than he did 40 years ago. How is that possible?
I don't know, but holy shit. Dude is up there doing it. I went with the singer from the band I was in at the time and he was in awe and inspired.
Fuckin gorilla biscuits, h2o, suicide machines and plenty more
Dwarves are always on point!
The Adicts. Same line up since they first started, and still putting on a great show.
They haven’t had the OG lineup playing in quite a while.
Really? Oh, shit. Had no idea. I remember that being a big draw of the band still having the original line up.
Yea they changed some people out a while back. They still sound incredible and haven’t lost it at all but there’s a few younger dudes up there now.
Pennywise are really tight live
I saw Bad Religion and Social Distortion on Friday and they both sounded great. Mike might have slowed down a bit, but after the year he went through, it was still awesome.
Rancid always kill it live.
Does hot water music count? Just asking since they're a huge part of my early years.
Cock Sparrer tops this list no questions asked. Slapshot Agnostic Front Outside of a tiny handful of bands though I can’t think of many reasons why I’d pay MORE to see fourty year old and older has been bands play when I can pay a fraction of that to see whatever is cool and exciting now.
I see Subhumans touring more than other bands and the fact that they care about new bands put them in my top
Bad Religion, Rancid & Bouncing Souls
D.O.A.
Face to face
I saw DOA last night and they are still pretty fucking good. Joe is the only original member but the current lineup is awesome and have been together for a long time now (probably at least a decade?).
Snuff, the mob (UK) and zounds. Although the last two aren't really active to this day, but their reunions were fantastic.
Snuff is rad
Saw The Queers friday night and they killed the show dude
The Pointed Sticks Violent Femmes
Saw Pennywise and Dropkick Murphys last month. They were both awesome. Saw Adolescents and Descendents last week (Circle Jerks were supposed to play but Joey C wasn't feeling well) and they both kicked ass too. Going to see Bad Religion and Social Distortion next month too.
Bad Religion
Rancid
Descendants The Vandals
Glenn ended up getting back together with Jerry and Doyle a few years ago. They are now still touring as the (mostly) OG misfits.
I don't know why, but I find GBH live very boring. Have seen them 3 times now and every time I've left for some food or something. Think they're a pretty good band and have some amazing songs, but they seem so dull live. They don't put up a show or anything.
Must have been seeing them in rooms where the crowd didn’t really care
Cock Sparrer The Adicts The Damned
Bad Religion
Swinging utters.
NOFX still writes music so they aren’t a legacy band.
That's not what a legacy band means. And either way, they are no longer writing music. They released their last studio album. And they are on their final tour.
I love NOFX but I don’t buy this being their final tour for one second, they may take some time off but once those lucrative offers start coming in, it’s show time
Fat Mike says they're putting out Everybody Else is Insane and NOFX:A-Z
They’re most certainly working on new music in between tours. Fat Mike *needs* to be creating something. Wish I had that spark.
In between what tours. This is their final/farewell tour. Maybe they balk on that, but for all intents and purposes they're done touring after this year. They're still supposed to release Half Album I think. And someone else claimed a-z and one other. It doesn't really matter to me, I only like a handful of their songs. They do take breaks between touring the different countries.
Forgot the most important one: Rancid
TSOL, Bad Religion, Circle Jerks, Descendants
Dayglow abortions Off with their heads
I love OWTH but they’re hardly a ‘legacy” band
They've been going for over 20 years, I'd say they qualify.
Avengers
The Exploited and Sick of it All are still great live too!
Cock Sparrer
Mxpx Edit: b/c autocorrect
Millencolin
Bad Religion
DOA, Dayglos Abortions, AK-47
Cock Sparrer have been going beyond 50 years now and it’s frightening how good they are.
Agnostic Front still plays pretty damn good. Saw them live in 2022.
I just bought my ticket to Social Distortion in September.
Sheer terror!!! Paul bearer is the best.

D.R.I.
Verbal Abuse is still around. New LP out soon!
Social Distortion

Saw them at cruel world a while back. I Was pretty drunk Tho so not the best experience
As someone who’s seen nofx through the years, they are nowhere near as good as they were . Bad Religion and SLF are just as good as they were in their prime
This is stupid
What about it. These hardworking bands deserve some spotlight too
No they don’t, they had their spotlight and now they are rehashing the oldies. There are plenty of newer bands worth supporting over any band on that list.
I catch both new and legacy acts. Nothing wrong with having both.
These old heads can rock out and give a better show than a lot of the newer bands
😂
They can though. Most punk bands today aren't writing songs as good as the legacy bands.
Can’t even name one band
“Legacy”? Great, just what we needed, a new sub-genera to endlessly debate, argue, and gate-keep over. What are the pre-reqs? Legacy is an adjective, not a genre. Lighten up, Francis.
Forgive me. I’m a Legacy punk who sometimes forgets sarcasm doesn’t always come across so obvious on this new fangled social medias stuff.
Shut up
It’s a tongue-in-cheek commentary on how ludicrous and over-the-top the scene can get about dissecting the genera.
It’s not that serious lol
You must be fun at parties.
Sarcasm man, sarcasm.
