My dog is also big on carrots, celery, and cucumber. Lately I've taken to making her mini smoothies popsicles for lack of a better term. I blend whatever fruits and vegetables are in season and freeze them in ice cube type trays.
She loves the ice crunch and chasing it around the room.
If you want to do the same, just be sure to check each ingredient first. Grapes for instance are not dog safe and I never would have known that.
+1 for checking. We nearly gave our puppy green beans as the preview description on Google said they’re safe. When we read the website itself it said to make sure you boil them first to ensure lectins are reduced.
We’ve been freezing / pureeing carrots and squash though!
Oh I don't think she had squash but funny enough it's in my cart for later today so guess we're doing it.
My great aunt bread boxers when I was a kid in the 80s. Based on her guidance I've always had onions and chocolate on my mind as absolute no go's so it's been interesting to find things that are just as bad if not worse.
When she was eight months, my puppy got into some onions and I was beside myself thinking that was it. Turns out it would have taken around 100 grams before it started to be toxic. And granted, I'm not trying the amounts or anything, I had just always thought it was a death sentence.
I think homemade treats are so much better for dogs. I try to eat unprocessed foods myself. But it's so important to do the homework!
We thought we had life figured out with our puppy by giving him frozen carrots.
They're cheap, healthy, crunchy and last a while because they're frozen. Plus the cold probably felt good on teething teeth!
We unfortunately did not consider that our pup (who's now an almost 4 year old full grown dog, what the heck!) was still a tiny little guy and 3 full sized carrots was waaaay too many.
We also learned that he was a good guy and told us every time he was going to have diarrhea throughout the night...
My puppy does that, we haven’t had the ice cube dispenser long, a few years but my old girl when she was around would come running, then we got a cat and she comes running and now we’ve got a puppy and she comes running 😂 its quite funny every time we press the dispenser 😂
My 5yo lab knows the coffee brewing means she is about to get an ice cube (it brews lava temp, and I want to drink it now!!). The 6mth old pup quickly became a fan too. They never outgrow ice!
I give mine cardboard boxes. She can open a taped up box way more faster and neater than I can. After she gets the tape off and inspects what's inside. She then spends forever tearing little pieces off until it's a pile on the floor
Mine loves paper towel too! I think lettuce ticks all his boxes tbh. It’s such a good thing for him to just rip into and pull apart to his heart’s content.
I used cabbage because lettuce was too expensive! And also used cardboard - but don’t let them eat the cardboard (a tiny bit is fine, depending on the pups size).
This is a good idea too! My puppy loves cardboard but swallows way too much of it, which is why I went for lettuce because it’s fine for him to swallow if he chooses.
It’s such a good activity! And I don’t know about you but I never end up using all of my lettuce before it starts to wilt so it’s good not to waste it!
I had this head of lettuce that was passed on to me and ran to the fridge. My lab pup destroyed it. He ate a little bit but it was 1000% about the thrill of shredding it up.
He is always looking for something new to shred lol
My husky (2, so not quite puppy anymore) loves to shred bamboo stalks. We have some growing in the yard and (if you know anything about bamboo, you know it overgrows insanely fast) she helps keep them at bay for me 😅

This is a great idea! I’ll have to figure a workaround for my pup since we live on the third floor of an apartment complex and I don’t think my neighbors want lettuce raining onto their patios/balconies lol
I love this! We just got my pup two days ago and are trying to find things to redirect her energy to save our curtains.
I forgot about using frozen veggies. Thank you!!
Is a nine week old lab okay to get small chunks of any of those? Google made it seem like even if they were smaller chunks they were still a choking hazard but I would loveeeee something else for him to chew/bite
I’m sure it would be fine. If you’re concerned I would just make sure to supervise your pup while you give it to them. They’re no more likely to choke on lettuce than any other leaf or vegetable. It’s also more about the activity of ripping it apart and playing with it. Your puppy probably won’t eat much of it, chew it yes but probably won’t swallow a great deal.
Thanks! Gave her a small bit of lettuce to see how she reacts; she’s slowly chewing it up quietly on the floor right now and has been for a few minutes. Will remember this!

Also try frozen thick broccoli stems.
Great idea!

Lol, mine swallowed a whole frozen carrot. I was so scared it would lead to a blockage, but luckily all was fine. Lesson learned!
Mine hates the taste of lettuce. Think he got that from my gf. Lol
That's a clever idea. I would think that a whole head of lettuce might be too much fiber for one sitting. Does he eat the entire head of lettuce?
No, he plays with most of it. It’s mainly about the game.
wish i could try this but my pup would eat until she pukes 😭 probably not the best way to toss a salad
Where are you finding this cheap lettuce in Australia 👀🤣
My puppy was completely uninterested in lettuce, but ice cubes were a godsend. She comes running at the sound of the ice dispenser now.
Mine too with the ice. Haven't tried the lettuce , but she's goes nuts for ice.

So does my BMD pup! Anytime we get water from the fridge we have to pay the "ice tax" 😅

Such a good idea!!! I was wondering what I could give him instead of paper towels— brilliant!

Yeah! It’s such a perfect way to direct destructive tendencies!
My husky (2, so not quite puppy anymore) loves to shred bamboo stalks. We have some growing in the yard and (if you know anything about bamboo, you know it overgrows insanely fast) she helps keep them at bay for me 😅
Also, wash the leaves and freeze them whilst still damp. My pup adores frozen iceberg lettuce!

What a fun idea, thanks! My new puppy just discovered eating grass and leaves yesterday
This is a great idea! I’ll have to figure a workaround for my pup since we live on the third floor of an apartment complex and I don’t think my neighbors want lettuce raining onto their patios/balconies lol
I have a slightly wilted romaine heart that I think just might go to my puppy bow.
I wonder if this will work for a 3 year old dog or if he will just look at me like I'm weird. Lol
It worked on a 5yo
Nice!!!
Mine LOVES sugar snap peas, better then any other treat. Always have in the fridge.
Mine loves carrots, blueberries and ice cookies
We do this occasionally too. It does make a mess but it's a clean mess, relarively speaking.
