I forced my pup to go outside when it was raining. If she didn’t potty, she went into her crate and then I tried again in 10 minutes and repeated that cycle until she finally went. When it was lightly drizzling, I started going outside with her and playing fetch and being really fun so she slowly learned that the rain is *great*. Now she plays outside all by herself when it’s raining lol. A torrential downpour is the only rain she’s not okay with, but if I go out with her on the leash with an umbrella she’ll potty quickly so we can go back inside. Puppies learn quickly that if they potty outside in the rain then it means they can get back inside ASAP and don’t have to keep going out.

I would also like to know this! It’s been raining non stop since I got my pup - she’s hates getting rained on and won’t potty outside while it’s raining - forecast for showers for the next 10 days argh :(

Sydney? I hope you're in Sydney. I don't like the idea of there being more of us scattered around the world with the next 10 days of raining/pee on the couch misery. My pup is 16 weeks today and I honestly want to give her up. I don't have a couch anymore because she's peed on it in so many places there's literally nowhere left to sit. I didn't think things could get this bad, and the worst thing is knowing that it's only going to get worse over the next week :(. Naturally, she loves going for a walk in the rain.

I am in Sydney! Holy shit this weather is F*CKED for toilet training. It stops raining, we go out, it starts raining and she doesn’t like it, we come home, she pee’s. Don’t give up!!! You and your pup can do it. I feel you though my carpet looks like a Dalmatians coat haha she tries her best to get it on the pee pad but her aim isn’t the best. The other issue I have and not sure how to fix it is that when she needs to pee and we’re outside she starts sniffing around and circling then gets distracted by a bird, car, noise in the distance etc *sigh*

Another Sydney puppy owner checking in!!! Feeling your pain :(

Same here. I'm in Newcastle so not getting it as bad, but the constant rain is shocking. We set up a small enclosed area outside under cover. The floor at that part is concrete but we picked up some potty mats from k-mart that have a grass texture - $20 called potty mats. Pup has gone on the potty mat every time so far Edit: we also got an enclosure from k-mart, there are a few options. The small animal enclosure (i think it was $20 or $25 is large & high enough for our maltese x poodle not to jump over). They have bigger options if your pup needs a bigger enclosure. Really easy to set up as well The combo of the enclosure & potty mat has been so, so good at getting us through this rain

If it is raining, you may have to take your pup out there. Maybe you have an umbrella, maybe you stand under a certain tree, but you go out there. If he refuses to go out or otherwise goes outside and wants back in, then you go inside, wipe his paws off/dry him, and tell him to get in his crate (nicely, don't make it a thing). He goes to his crate, and you wait 5-10 minutes. Then you try again. Rinse and repeat until he does his business, and when he does, you give him a yummy treat and then rush back inside. That way, he learns that going outside to potty is the ultimate endgame and (hopefully) he does it more quickly in the future.

Neither of mine like it, but I stand out there until they go. They’ll eventually learn that the faster they go, the faster they get to go inside

HighlyJoyusDragons

He will not even step out side, even when we try to carry him he'll climb as high as he can to stay inside/ will not move from the door way when we set him outside.

buzzfeed_sucks

I leash my oldest and lead her onto the grass so that she can’t run back to the door

drxena

It’s flooding in my area now and not safe outside, so I’m using a pee pad in a litter box for the pee, and a pee pad in the playpen for the poop. It’s not ideal, but I’d rather he be safe.

louisedelacroix

I take an umbrella with me and join him outside because I'm a softie and he's a (cute) bastard.

Will-owo-the-wisp

My pup loves the rain, but my 7 year old chihuahua very much does not, and all attempts to help her realize she won't melt like the wicked witch of the west have resulted in failure. I gave up pretty quickly and have been taking her out with an umbrella her whole life lol

HighlyJoyusDragons

I think once his grown up coat comes in fully it'll help him a little bit since the coarser outer coat will help keep him a little warmer/dryer

Allirgael

Honestly, make it fun. I just run in the pouring rain and he will sort of chase me. Then you play with him, give cuddles. With all this movement, he will just pee. Since doing this even once, he doesn't mind the rain. If you don't like the rain, your dog will not like it either.

LSariel

A raincoat works for us! :) And we just go right outside and if he goes potty I don't force him to stay out.
