pablo honey: alternative rock, britpop, post-grunge (?)
the bends: alternative rock, post-grunge, art rock
ok computer: art rock, alternative rock, space rock, experimental rock
kid a: electronic, experimental rock, idm
amnesiac: electronic, experimental rock, jazz rock, art pop (?)
hail to the thief: alternative rock, electronic rock, art rock
in rainbows: art rock, dream pop, alternative
the king of limbs: idm, electronic, krautrock, progressive electronic (?)
a moon shaped pool: chamber pop, art pop, alternative, post rock (?)
In rainbow being dream pop is just wrong. It’s very pretty and lush but that doesn’t make it dream pop. Arbitrary IMO, as genres are interpreted differently by everyone.
Those songs are extremely textured and atmospheric while showing many signs of post-rock, including orchestration / chamber music, emphasis on timbre, and crescendos following build-ups.
I do listen to them.
[https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/post-rock/](https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/post-rock/) And yes, they are characteristics of post-rock.
I don’t know how to say this while being clear. Those characteristics are sometimes in PR, it having some of those in your songs doesn’t mean you are PR
Well that's why I said that they're post-rock adjacent, and not full blown post-rock. These songs show heavy influences and signs of post-rock, although it is primarily art rock, the general atmosphere and style is quite post-rock in my opinion. Cause again, post-rock is a spectrum. You have Sigur Ros and you also have Swans. Although not a primary genre in AMSP, it is still one worth noting for being adjacent of it.
You often hear alternative and art but I haven't heard anyone describe them as prog. Though even Pablo Honey has complex time signatures and not really traditional chord progressions, paranoid android has 7/8 and a lot of chromatic parts. Imo the strongest point is their chord progressions
Who else thinks 1993-1995 era Radiohead is britpop hot take but I think they are clearly fitting in that genre around that time before ok computer and even that carries some of the britpop qualities
Before OKc, they were power pop, with just the smallest amount of grunge.
OKc is alternative rock, but moreso the Smashing Pumpkins type, rather than the Pixies type.
Kid A/mnesiac is electronic
Hail to what?
In Rainbows is art rock. No way to describe it. Reminds me of shoegaze, but not really close to shoegaze.
The King of Limbs is also electronic, but it feels much more experimental.
A Moon Shaped Pool is a mix of Baroque Pop and Art rock.
For my bands that have distinctive sounds, I categorize them by their name. Radiohead is Radiohead, Beatles is Beatles, Sigur Roś is Sigur Roś, etc. But that’s just me.
They evolved through all of their albums. First was grunge, second was Brit pop, third college rock, hard to define the electronic albums.. I'd stick to college/ alt rock.
Alt rock. Some people love to say that their favorite artist transcends genre but it really doesn’t. In Radiohead’s case they pioneered alt rock to what it is today.
You could also say art rock. But that feels pretentious so I don’t wanna.
Everything from Kid A to their most recent album except for HTTT is really just it’s own genre of music. You can say alternative but it stops right there. I can’t call Kid A, In Rainbows, TKOL and especially AMSP, “alternative rock” there’s barely anything rock about those albums outside of a few songs.
Radiohead is like Bon Iver and Gorillaz, they’re just their own genre of music
Alternative/rock
Normally art rock / alternative rock but each album has its own genre really.
Yes.
Love that band
Gotta love Tales From Topographic Oceans.
correct answer
I strongly disagree with this statement.
It’s Radiohead music.
Dead pop
Oh no! Pop is dead? Long Live Pop.
i categorize them as art rock when i have to but i think they're beyond categorization
Art rock is the way to go
art rock it is

Nothing of moon shaped pool is post rock
In rainbow being dream pop is just wrong. It’s very pretty and lush but that doesn’t make it dream pop. Arbitrary IMO, as genres are interpreted differently by everyone.
Too broad of a genre to say that
Again, I disagree.
Yeah i wasnt sure either but i can kinda see it
Decks Dark, Ful Stop, The Numbers, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief is post-rock adjacent to be honest.
Disagree
Those songs are extremely textured and atmospheric while showing many signs of post-rock, including orchestration / chamber music, emphasis on timbre, and crescendos following build-ups.
Disagree. None of those characteristics mean post rock. I’d suggest you listen to more Mogwai, EITS, Godspeed, ITTCT, God is an astronaut, caspian etc
I do listen to them. [https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/post-rock/](https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/post-rock/) And yes, they are characteristics of post-rock.

I also wouldn’t call swan post rock at all so I guess it tracks that we won’t agree
Kid A and Amnesiac is quite post-rock to be honest.
Pairs great with depression and ennui
It is Phonk.
Depression
Hot take they are prog rock
They actually are! Prog/art/alternative
You often hear alternative and art but I haven't heard anyone describe them as prog. Though even Pablo Honey has complex time signatures and not really traditional chord progressions, paranoid android has 7/8 and a lot of chromatic parts. Imo the strongest point is their chord progressions
I think certain songs like Paranoid Android lean more prog because they don’t follow traditional song form.
Who else thinks 1993-1995 era Radiohead is britpop hot take but I think they are clearly fitting in that genre around that time before ok computer and even that carries some of the britpop qualities
Absolutely. Parklife would mix well with that era.
the genre is awesome sauce 🔥😻🙀
Alt rock to art rock to idm in general but depends what album you're referring to.
Second British Invasion Pop, Alternative Progressive Electronic Rock.
Who gives a fuck? Genres are for journalists, marketers etc
Because it can be helpful when describing a band to someone that doesn't know them?
So marketing then!!
Haha yes fair point!
And what if this person is a journalist or marketer?
Then they’re paid to do research and can come to their own conclusions
So asking the fans and community doesnt count?
they make a lot of genres
Before OKc, they were power pop, with just the smallest amount of grunge. OKc is alternative rock, but moreso the Smashing Pumpkins type, rather than the Pixies type. Yes
Alternative and ambient mostly.
Yes
Alternative rock/Art rock/Electronic rock
Experimental rock and post-rock should define most of their work.
Science
For my bands that have distinctive sounds, I categorize them by their name. Radiohead is Radiohead, Beatles is Beatles, Sigur Roś is Sigur Roś, etc. But that’s just me.
Hence Alternative rock being a thing
art rock for sure
Gluegazer Shoegazer/gloomy
Radiohead Genre
alternative
They are a chameleon.
They evolved through all of their albums. First was grunge, second was Brit pop, third college rock, hard to define the electronic albums.. I'd stick to college/ alt rock.
Alternative
Alt rock. Some people love to say that their favorite artist transcends genre but it really doesn’t. In Radiohead’s case they pioneered alt rock to what it is today. You could also say art rock. But that feels pretentious so I don’t wanna.
Alternative, for sure
You tell me, bub
All of them
Everything from Kid A to their most recent album except for HTTT is really just it’s own genre of music. You can say alternative but it stops right there. I can’t call Kid A, In Rainbows, TKOL and especially AMSP, “alternative rock” there’s barely anything rock about those albums outside of a few songs. Art Rock
The sub-genre is different on each album, but the actual genre overall is alternative rock.
