OutKast are infinitely talented, they dropped out of the game at their prime, so their music is timeless, and they’re on the no clap list, as far as I can tell.

It's dope to see people's top 10...t0p 3...I've left out so many bangers...the sad thing is the lack of quality hip hop from 2017 till now...most of this mainstream is so fake..I get all my new shit now from independent unsigned artists...that's hip hop...not all this cookie cutter...word to all my YouTube artists...."hard target" "dax"..."acal".."merkules"...millyz. that's the new selling CD's out the trunk hustle...and these dudes spit fire...
Damn we completely differ my top 15 is:
15 The Money Store - Death Grips, 14 To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick, 13 The College Dropout - Ye, 12 Moment of Truth - Gang Starr, 11 All Eyez on Me - Pac, 10 We Got it From Here... Thank You 4 Your Service - Tribe, 9 Piñata - Freddie Gibbs, 8 Reasonable Doubt - Jay, 7 The Low End Theory - Tribe, 6 Aquemini - Outkast, 5 Me Against the World- Pac, 4 Midnight Marauders - Tribe, 3 Lifestylez ov Da Poor & Dangerous - Big L, 2 Madvillainy - Madvillain,
1 Illmatic - Nas, by a long way too
Depends on what type of music were you listening until now. Hip-hop has a lot of subgenres. If you like a more jazz-infused music, you can try Gangstarr, or Guru's Jazzmataaz colections... or Kendrick's To Pimp a Butterfly...
If you like something more underground, you can go from Wu-Tang Clan, Jedi Mind Tricks, Nas, Notorious BIG...
If you want something more soft and soulful, try Jay-Z, Kanye, Do or Die...
If you want something more funky... Dr. Dre, Warren G, Outkast...
If you want something more mainstream, you can try LL Cool J, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Drake...
Otherwise, try other playlists such as Rap Caviar, Gold School, or whatever playlist... I could also give you my playlist...
An artist is mainstream when you could go into the street, walk up to a random person and ask them, "Hey, do you know this artist called Lil Wayne?" If the average person without hiphop knowledge can answer yes to that, they're mainstream.
2Pac is the best starting point because he literally has a song for every mood, feeling and subject.
2Pac All Eyez On Me, Me Against The World and Makaveli are great.
Then 50 Cent “Get Rich Or Die Trying” is also great music for any listener.
For more lyrical masterpieces you could go Nas “Illmatic” Nas “It Was Written” or Lupe Fiasco “Food & Liquor”.
More modern commercial would be Drake “Take Care” or Lil Wayne “Carter 3”
Ayee, glad to see someone else pushing Zay, he’s my favorite rapper though I probably wouldn’t recommend him first to someone who’s never listened to rap (I second Kanye Graduation or 2Pac). But if I was gonna recommend him, I’d probably recommend Cilvia Demo
Graduation is classic and a good gateway in but isn't a good representation of the current crop. I feel like my grandma could pop Zay in and be feeling it. Are we getting a new album in 24?
I got you fam. Trust me
Lupe fiasco- the cool, food and liquor
Shad- the old prince, when this is over
Kanye west- graduation, college drop out, late registration,

Nas- illmatic, it was written

Joey badass- 1999
Jay z- the black album, the blue print, reasonable doubt, American gangster.
J.cole- 4 your eyez only
Gza- liquid swords
Freddie gibbs- Alfredo
Drake- so far gone, comeback season,
Mos def & talib kweli- Blackstar
Skyzoo- all the brilliant things
Denzel curry- melt my eyez
J.i.d- the forever story
For starters, this is a pretty solid list.
You could pick any which one off this list and be blown away, IMHO. Hiphop/rap offers so much variety. You'll find storytellers. You'll find mobster, Nerds, geniuses, wackos, criminals...all each their own artist and own person. Each with something important to say and speak on. Enjoy this very diverse and unique area of music.
Eminem is always good for beginners, his music will set a tone for rap is supposed to be, and then you can get into more production side, like Kanye, where you'll find that rap is not just about lyrics but also about amazing production. I recommend starting with Eminem's Slim Shady Trilogy and then Kanyes College Trilogy, if you end up liking the lyrical style more, try Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole, and if you end up liking Kanye's trilogy more, try 808s and Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and YEEZUS, you can also listen to Drake's early albums, they're in a league of their own.
The college dropout by Kanye west, Igor and flower boy by Tyler the creator, let's start here by lil yachty, the life of Pablo by Kanye west, saturation 3 by brockhampton, goodbye and good riddance by juice wrld this are some rap album really chill Great for getting started with rap and trap Because they have a lot of non-rap influences

Arent some of these a bit too lyrical for a person who is just starting? I feel like with doom its pretty hard to get into even if you been listening to rap.
there are like 50 options... check out a few songs, find the artist you're feeling, and explore their catalogue. I put a fairly wide array of styles and artists in there.

If you like jazz inspired music check out the series by Guru - Jazzmatazz
Actual Jazz musicians playing backing for Guru who's arguably one of the best MCs of all time. I think there are a total of 5 albums in the series, with the best being vol 1 and 2 (IMO at least). Got a really different feel to it than samples or other styles of beats.
Laura's disorder..."cats are better" debut album...."tampa bay baby" sophomore relesse... "hihiam" newest telease... 3 albums so diverse...with heavy bars...dope beats...real rap...hip hop classics...underground m.c. on the verge of blowing up...and before they start...I have nothing to do with this kid...list an old hop hop head that wants to see the culture grow....and I'm proud to call this fellow Floridians a flo grown lyricist
I would try "Grey Crow" by "Eligh". Beautifully arranged beats, very melodic, very appaeling. But also lyrical craftsmanship at its finest. A lot of great feature artists too
[https://youtu.be/ljd9dZ5GPfw?si=AMnp8gffL5xkScwA](https://youtu.be/ljd9dZ5GPfw?si=AMnp8gffL5xkScwA)
I don't think anyone mentioned Lil Waynes Tha Carter albums. Carter 2 is my favorite overall but they're all at least solid. Also Get Rich or Die Trying
A good rule of thumb is If you’re into lyricism and the craft of hip hop, lean towards underground music. If you’re more into the “sound” check out some mainstream artists.
2000 by grand puba. I never hear about this album from anyone but holy shit, it is an amazing album that gets missed by too many. Other honorable mentions are Monkey bars by Sean price, kiss the game goodbye by Jadakiss, when the smoke clears by three six mafia, and disposable arts by masta ace
OP, listen to this guy. The Kendrick album is certainly more jazzy and up his alley, but Tetsuo is one of my favorite albums from any genre in the last 10 years. Prisoner 1 & 2 is truly one of my favorite rap songs of all time.
Start by going way back, Sugar Hill Gang, Doug E Fresh, Cool Herc.
NWA and Ice T are always solid. Today we listen to Macklemore and Jack Harlow.
I am 51 tomorrow and still attend Rap Shows with my kids.
Hey, if you are a nerd like me, check out the book The Big Payback by Dan Charnas. Start at the beginning, then as you find stuff you like, zoom out and listen to whatever you want.
It’s an awesome book.
My personal favorite album is Goodbye and Good Riddance by Juice Wrld. Definitely a personal opinion tho. TPAP by Kendrick and graduation by Kanye are the best hip hop albums of all time to a lot of people.(I’m more of a DAMN fan personally)
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF HIPHOP!
Start at Nas's Illmatic.
This album covers all the essentials of rap storytelling and fire beats!
...and then work your way through Nas's affiliates Jay Z, DMX, Big L, 2Pac, Biggie Smalls.
Deep Shit: DMX “Its Dark and Hell is Hot”
Dope Shit: Lil Wayne “The Carter”
Original Trap Shit: TI “Urban Legend”
Hard Shit: 50 Cent “Get Rich or Die Trying”
Check out Atmosphere! Underground from Minneapolis.
Fuck You Lucy is their classic, angrier sounding album.
When Life Gives You Lemons, Paint That Shit Gold is my favorite, great lyricism and beats all around.
This is awesome, you have so much dope stuff to enjoy.
Id start with:
Kanye West - Graduation
50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Trying
Biggie - Ready to Die
Drake - Nothing was the Same
Vince Staples - Summertime 06
Tech N9ne! He has a lot of amazing albums - Special Effects, N9na and the Storm but he also has collabos albums with a lot of other artists that might peek your interest

Stankonia - Outkast
The Impossible Kid - Aesop Rock
The Carter 3 and 4 - Lil Wayne
The Forever Story - JID
Raising Hell - Run DMC
Get Rich or Die Trying - 50
It Was Written - Nas
It's Dark and Hell is Hot - DMX
Food and Liquor - Lupe Fiasco
Blackout - Redman and Method Man
Rodeo - Travis Scott
If You're Reading This It's Too Late - Drake
Paid In Full - Eric B and Rakim
36 Chambers - WuTang Clan
Honestly for starting hip hop, go with Kanye, Travis and Tyler the Creator as imo they're the most accessible rappers (although Tyler's first few projects aren't so much) and then you can go further into 90s, Trap or Modern
Im very partial to a bit of 90s - 2000s rap. My reccomendations for 90s - 2000s are: Nas, MF DOOM (All Pseudonyms too), Big L, Big Pun, Biggie, Pac, Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Black Star/Mos Def, Kanye, Wu-Tang (and members), Outkast, Camp Lo, Mobb Deep, J Dilla, The Pharcyde, Krs-one, Nwa (and members), Common, Rakim, Public Enemy, Hieroglyphics (Including Deltron and Souls of Mischief), 50 Cent, The Game, DMX, Jay Z
The Roots. They are a hip-hop band! Yeah, now they’re a house band for popular tv show but I still love Things Fall Apart and Do You Want More. Black Thought is one of the illest!
J Cole forest hills drive. Warm up and any mixtapes. Look for mixtapes too, like dreamchasers 1-3 from meek mill. Fabulous has a few banger mixtapes. Artist have been posting mixtapes from back in the day like drake, his stuff is on Spotify now but hard to find. Looking for older? 8 mile soundtrack will give you a great perspective, G unit beg for mercy, Nelly country grammar, jay z blueprints, Nas any of them (even new stuff are some bangers) hell even check out yelawolf trunk muzik.
Here are a few rap classics:
The Low End Theory: A tribe called Quest
The Chronic: Dr, Dre
enter the 36 Chambers; wu tang clan
madvilainy: MF DOOM
Ice Cube: the predator, (or) amerikkka's most wanted
Big L; Lifestylez of the poor and dangerous
ATLiens: Outkast
good kid, m.A.A.d city. I would’ve said TPAB but that one’s a much heavier listen, probably best to start off with something easy. And if you like jazz then you’ll probably like TPAB too
I would start in the 80’s. Run DMC. Then work your way through the Rakim, Kane, KRS, EPMD era. LL Cool J is the first rap superstar so gotta study up on him. Get some NWA, Ice- T in there too. Then the great albums of the 90’s. Illmatic, Ready 2 Die, Whut?! The Album, Wu Tang, Reasonable Doubt.
Like what year are you looking for… if you want 90’s classic definitely mobb deep the infamous. Hands down one of my favorites of all time. If ur looking for jazzy boom bap type of rap I’d recoiled A Tribe Called Quest, INI, Pete rock & cl smooth
dom Kennedy - Yellow album
asap rocky- Live.Love.Asap
kendrick Lamar - Section 80
Wiz khalifa- Kush & OJ
Larry June - Into the late night
50 cent- Get rich die trying
Listen to some aesop rock. Especially his most recnt album. Also anything ice cube has done. E40 as well. Wu tang clan is also a must listen as well. Their albums are all pretty good. I also recommend a tribe called quest. That should give you a pretty good start. Also give mf doom a try. He is really good.
A lot of these comments are older rap which is super valid. But if you are wanting a more modern rap feel to get started, I’d recommend heroes and villains by metro boomin
Skyzoo Mind of a Saint is jazzy and produced with live instrumentation in conjunction with a very talented team called The Other Guys. It’s also a play on the show SnowFall. Jazz and drug dealing essentially, you’ll love it
So, I recently got a 6 disc changer in my car and was looking for recommendations for what to fill it with. Got some great advice.
Granted, I'm 53 and have been a hip hop head since the eighties, so I am totally familiar with the genre and the greats.
So far, I've filled 3 slots with some of my faves.
Killing Nothing - Boldy James
Vaudeville Villain - Viktor Vaughn (MF DOOM)
Liquid Swords - GZA
On deck for order: Only Built for Cuban Linx - Raekwon, Aquemini - Outkast, Run The Jewels (probably 2, but any album is full of bangers) and XXX - Danny Brown (of I can find it under like $50)
Lil Wayne Carter II and Carter III and No Ceilings
Eminem Eminem Show
Drake So Far Gone and Nothing was the Same
Dr. Dre 2001
50 Cent Get Rich Or Die Tryin
Nelly Nellyville
Kanye West Graduation
All of those are 90’s and 2000’s. When hip hop was the best. I’m 34 so those are my all timers. Very few skips on all of those albums
Graduation by Kanye West
Rodeo by Travis Scott
Good Kid MAAD City by Kendrick Lamar
At Long Last A$AP by A$AP Rocky
If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late by Drake
Kiss 5 by K Camp
Man on the Moon Volume II by Kid Cudi
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West
2014 Forest Hills Drive by J Cole
Slime Language 2 if you might be feeling trap at all. Lots of different artists.
Metro Boomin and Futures new album We Still Don’t Trust you is a great album as well
At.Long.Last.A$AP
Outkast
this is the correct answer
OutKast are infinitely talented, they dropped out of the game at their prime, so their music is timeless, and they’re on the no clap list, as far as I can tell.
Graduation by Kanye West

You heard Kendrick’s most recent album?
Damn we completely differ my top 15 is: 15 The Money Store - Death Grips, 14 To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick, 13 The College Dropout - Ye, 12 Moment of Truth - Gang Starr, 11 All Eyez on Me - Pac, 10 We Got it From Here... Otherwise, try other playlists such as Rap Caviar, Gold School, or whatever playlist... I could also give you my playlist...
LL, 50 and Wayne left the "mainstream" ages ago
Then what is Wayne now? It's not like he's underground
An artist is mainstream when you could go into the street, walk up to a random person and ask them, "Hey, do you know this artist called Lil Wayne?" If the average person without hiphop knowledge can answer yes to that, they're mainstream.
Ok so then Lil Wayne is mainstream
Using this logic, so did Elton John and Madonna.
Absolutely do not listen to Rap Caviar as it’ll make you dismiss the genre and think it’s all trash.
All A Tribe Called Quest albums if you are into jazzy rap. I would start by Low End Theory.
came here to say the same, cannot believe I had to scroll so far!
The Eminem Show
UHMERIKAHHHH😈
WE LOVE U❤️❤️❤️😤😤😤😤
2Pac is the best starting point because he literally has a song for every mood, feeling and subject. 2Pac All Eyez On Me, Me Against The World and Makaveli are great. When you listen to Kendrick don’t forget section 80, it’s one of his best works
Ooo and if you like jazz listen to cherry bomb by Tyler the creator too that album is beautiful
Play Sour Soul album from Ghostface and BADBADNOTGOOD
seems to be the only one in the comments i could see OP liking from its adjacency to the dixon album, good job
Glad to help!
Isaiah Rashad - Homies Begged. It's music for the soul

That’s true. Shii, I hope we get another album this year. I believe he confirmed he would be dropping this year but I don’t know if I trust it lol

Give Pardi a shot with section 8.... so underrated
Tetsuo and Youth by Lupe Fiasco and To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar are absolute must listens

J Cole Sideline Story is a perfect gateway into rap
Aquemini by outkast, best rap record of all time IMO
The Dayton Family Jon Connor Top Authority MC Breed Esham
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF HIPHOP! Start at Nas's Illmatic. This album covers all the essentials of rap storytelling and fire beats! ...and then work your way through Nas's affiliates Jay Z, DMX, Big L, 2Pac, Biggie Smalls.
Especially since you listen to Jazz. Nas's father was a jazz musician. So even more of a reason to take the plunge.

Check out Atmosphere! Underground from Minneapolis. Fuck You Lucy is their classic, angrier sounding album. When Life Gives You Lemons, Paint That Shit Gold is my favorite, great lyricism and beats all around.

Honestly for starting hip hop, go with Kanye, Travis and Tyler the Creator as imo they're the most accessible rappers (although Tyler's first few projects aren't so much) and then you can go further into 90s, Trap or Modern Im very partial to a bit of 90s - 2000s rap. My reccomendations for 90s - 2000s are: Nas, MF DOOM (All Pseudonyms too), Big L, Big Pun, Biggie, Pac, Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Black Star/Mos Def, Kanye, Wu-Tang (and members), Outkast, Camp Lo, Mobb Deep, J Dilla, The Pharcyde, Krs-one, Nwa (and members), Common, Rakim, Public Enemy, Hieroglyphics (Including Deltron and Souls of Mischief), 50 Cent, The Game, DMX, Jay Z
MIKE - Burning Desire , Disco
RTJ 1, 2, 3 and 4 Also, oxymoron by schoolboy Q
The Roots. They are a hip-hop band! Yeah, now they’re a house band for popular tv show but I still love Things Fall Apart and Do You Want More. Black Thought is one of the illest!
Biggie 2pac dre snoop
J Cole forest hills drive. Warm up and any mixtapes. Look for mixtapes too, like dreamchasers 1-3 from meek mill. Fabulous has a few banger mixtapes. Artist have been posting mixtapes from back in the day like drake, his stuff is on Spotify now but hard to find. Looking for older? 8 mile soundtrack will give you a great perspective, G unit beg for mercy, Nelly country grammar, jay z blueprints, Nas any of them (even new stuff are some bangers) hell even check out yelawolf trunk muzik.
Here are a few rap classics: The Low End Theory: A tribe called Quest The Chronic: Dr, Dre enter the 36 Chambers; wu tang clan madvilainy: MF DOOM Ice Cube: the predator, (or) amerikkka's most wanted Big L; Lifestylez of the poor and dangerous ATLiens: Outkast

If you’re feeling wild, Rodeo by Travis Scott.
ATLiens and Aquemini - Outkast, both albums are masterpieces
Graduation - Kanye
Nas or big L - just press shuffle and close your eyes
Freestyle Fellowship - Innercity Griots That's a great jazz rap album.
good kid, m.A.A.d city. I would’ve said TPAB but that one’s a much heavier listen, probably best to start off with something easy. And if you like jazz then you’ll probably like TPAB too
Straight Outta Compton
I would start in the 80’s. Run DMC. Then work your way through the Rakim, Kane, KRS, EPMD era. LL Cool J is the first rap superstar so gotta study up on him. Get some NWA, Ice- T in there too. Then the great albums of the 90’s. Illmatic, Ready 2 Die, Whut?! The Album, Wu Tang, Reasonable Doubt.
1999 by Joey Badass or ready to die by notorious B.I.G
Like what year are you looking for… if you want 90’s classic definitely mobb deep the infamous. Hands down one of my favorites of all time. If ur looking for jazzy boom bap type of rap I’d recoiled A Tribe Called Quest, INI, Pete rock & cl smooth

Tetsuo & Youth
Life After Death - Biggie
To Pimp A Butterfly, DAMN., Good Kid, m.A.A.d. city, all by Kendrick Lamar

Deltron 3030
To pimp a butterfly - Kendrick Lamar
As long as it's not Flo Rida listen to whatever you want but for the love of GOD stay away from that shit.
Blackstar or Late registration by Kanye imo. Good combo of fun and cerebral. Not very dance oriented.
2pac - Me against the world MF DOOM - Madvillainy (considered one of the best underground hip hop albums of all time.)
A lot of these comments are older rap which is super valid. But if you are wanting a more modern rap feel to get started, I’d recommend heroes and villains by metro boomin
Any album from A tribe called Quest.
Beastie Boys License to ill
Skyzoo Mind of a Saint is jazzy and produced with live instrumentation in conjunction with a very talented team called The Other Guys. It’s also a play on the show SnowFall. Jazz and drug dealing essentially, you’ll love it
Checkout Digable Planet from the ‘90s “Rebirth of Slick” was a hit of theirs. Their other stuff is good and I think you will like it.
Killing Nothing - Boldy James Vaudeville Villain - Viktor Vaughn (MF DOOM) Liquid Swords - GZA On deck for order: Only Built for Cuban Linx - Raekwon, Aquemini - Outkast, Run The Jewels (probably 2, but any album is full of bangers) and XXX - Danny Brown (of I can find it under like $50)
Might as well start with only the most iconic hip hop album ever..... Dr. Dre- The Chronic
Nas, Rakim, Kool G Rap, Mobb Deep, Redman, Wu Tang, Capone n Noriega, 2 Pac, Notorious BiG, Ice Cube, NWA, Snoop Dogg, Nipsey Hussle, Scarface, KRS-1, Gang Starr, The Lox, G-Unit
Lil Wayne Carter II and Carter III and No Ceilings Eminem Eminem Show Drake So Far Gone and Nothing was the Same Dr. Dre 2001 50 Cent Get Rich Or Die Tryin Nelly Nellyville Kanye West Graduation All of those are 90’s and 2000’s. When hip hop was the best. I’m 34 so those are my all timers. Very few skips on all of those albums
Lupe Fiasco- Food and Liquor
