Absolutely loved it. Feels so much better than gta.

Head-Of-The-Table

GTA 5’s shooting system is real Arcady.. they went with much more of a different approach for Red Dead 2

fieldysnuts94

Which is funny cause initially people liked it better than gta 4 and people said that’s as too arcadey too, which is totally fine by me I love arcadey

Head-Of-The-Table

I love both GTA V and 4’s shooting system.. 5 feels a lot easier and comfortable. 4 adds some weight to it. I’m perfectly fine with both

cortlong

Huge fan of 4s. Felt super nice. RDR2 hits that nice in between of gta4 and max Payne 3.

TaPowerFromTheMarket

The thing I loved about GTA IV was that you shot people but they didn’t die. You could still see them wounded, but it didn’t count as a death if you checked your stats. I did a playthrough before and only killed ~300 people, which sounds huge, but playing through headshotting leaves you with a body count around 1500 provided you don’t kill pedestrians and go on rampages. Most kills came from sniping, but I remember I played that mission, the shootout in the museum and only killed the guys who chase you after as you hadda blow up their cars. I still shot everyone, but didn’t kill them according to stats. Just felt more realistic to me.

[deleted]

Damn you got he holy grail of gaming : GTA VI. How was it and could you give me a copy?

ryanreigns

It also requires a bit more skill in RDR2 because you’re using strictly semi auto weapons. Can just spray and pray in GTA sometimes

YoungDeathWish

Most the weapons aren’t semi auto actually except the late game pistols and semi auto shotgun. The rest are single action, double action, break action, bolt action, and slide action.

BastiaenAssassin

And lever action!

We_No_Who_U_R

Does either rolling block or trapdoor count as their own type of action?

frotyisnothere

I think they're both considered breach loading rifles, though the Rolling Block is also considered its own action

WastedPresident

Rdr2 has some of the assets from Max Payne 3, which is my favorite 3rd person shooter ever. Gun play feels similar, bit more weighty and slow in rdr2

SteamTrainDude

Ik, it actually feels like you’re shooting a gun lol

RogueRequest2

It took me about 20-30 hours of gameplay to really figure out all the ins and out of it, but once I did I found that I like it more than practically any other game I've played. Everything about it feels so deliberate.

F1reatwill88

The biggest thing was the extra trigger pull to cock the guns. That got me killed a few times lol

amotion578

What got me was that "I know I didn't cycle the next round, I need to do that" And the only way to do it while in cover was to reload Needed an action button to load the next round in cover without presenting to shoot 😣

PappaOC

I just developed a habit of shooting, then immediately "fire" again to have the next round ready for the next target

Lifesuxsometimes13

I have that habit, problem is, I still have that habit while dual wielding

TheLordGuru800

And for the semi auto shotgun too.always wasting ammo thinking I'm using the pump action

throwaway23334455

Dual wielding had me looking like a mess, idk why I was stuck thinking each trigger was each gun 😂 Spent a while wondering why my screen was freaking out every time I was tryna shoot

[deleted]

It should automatically cycle to the next round the next time you aim, though. That's what I wound up doing basically exclusively; aim, fire, stop aiming, hit the aim button again and repeat. Rarely do I ever fire multiple shots on the same aim; makes you less accurate, too.

AFishNamedFreddie

I honestly loved that. However on controller, I wish it was a separate button instead of just the trigger. Make it feel more deliberate instead of just mashing the right trigger

Platypus_fucker69

I always thought the b botton would work well trigger with finger hammer with thumb

AFishNamedFreddie

I like the idea behind using the right thumb, but then you have to move your thumb from the aiming stick to hit it, which gets frustrating. Maybe clicking the right stick? But then you have to move deadeye. I've always thought it should be right bumper, but I really like what you said about using the thumb to cock the hammer like on a revolver

Wicked_Depresso

iirc you can cock the gun by briefly letting go of the left trigger and then holding it back down. if you do it fast enough it doesn't even interrupt your aiming. also, next time you holster your gun try double tapping the holster button for a fun little surprise

YellowOnionBelt

>also, next time you holster your gun try double tapping the holster button for a fun little surprise There's nothing like quick draw killing everyone at the poker table and double clicking the holster button.

RogueRequest2

Just switch to the double action or one of the pistols.

[deleted]

Double action sucks

[deleted]

It really does. Which is kind of a shame, because it slayed in RDR1.

Isaac-Mckinnon

Well, all guns slayed in RDR1 if you compare them to their RDR2 counterparts. RDR2 guns do pathetic damage in general, which is a shame because it means that even the player is not really in danger when being shot.

F1reatwill88

Human technology never went beyond the Schofield

SIacktivist

It's why I'm honestly a fan of the double actions. A matter of comfort.

hawtdawg101

i’m not a huge fan of that mechanic. got me switching weapons to avoid it sometimes. but i can’t stay away from the cattleman for long

Head-Of-The-Table

I mean, the more we explore, the more better we get. Even I don’t suck at shooting in this game like before haha, after the 80 hours, finally I was able to get proper headshots

Dizzy_Glizzy

I want a free roam game with Max Payne 3 combat

Wooden_Artist_2000

Omg with the Matrix-style side jumps?

WastedPresident

and the painkillers and liquor to dampen the ouchies to your pelvis

WastedPresident

Rdr2 felt like they learned a lot making Max Payne 3 at least compared to GTA

Izzvzual

They took the holding/storing weapons system from Max Payne !

Yayo30

Did they? RDR2 only has a limited weapon wheel, unlike GTAV where you have an arsenal on your back. But as I recall, in Max Payne 3 you could only carry 3 weapons at the same time, 2 holstered pistols and a rifle on the hands. And even when you wanted to dual wield Max would drop the rifle to the ground. Instead, RDR2 lets you carry 4 weapons, 2 revolvers and 2 rifles. All of them permanently.

Izzvzual

I agree with you its not exactly the same, but I remember seeing a video that they told what part they took, from each of their game. The Max Payne's holding weapons system, The Bully's "Greet" or "antagonize" system, The L.A. Noir's inspecting objects in your hands system... They took bits of all of their game to make the best one ever made.

Zearo298

The biggest thing I notice is the way you can quick swap to a pistol from a rifle by Arthur continuing to hold the rifle in his left hand while immediately unholstering with his right.

MrMooga

RDR2 is closer to Max Payne than most people realize with all the ways you can use dead eye.

ClericIdola

I was lowkey disappointed with GTA V coming off of RDR1 and Max Payne 3.

MrMooga

GTAV is kinda mid in terms of moment to moment gameplay. RDR2 is imo a high bar when it comes to gunplay.

AbunaiShi

That would be fun as hell! Remember playing Max Payne 3 online on the old 360 days, game was fun as hell.

WastedPresident

I like that the two most prominent Max’s in media have badass titles. Max Payne and Mad Max. Y’all can guess what my name is lol

Disquiet173

Max E. Pad?

jhamelaz

Doug?

GonnaGoFat

Mario

ChesterDaMolester

I just want a game where shooting glass looks as good as max Payne 3

NotSoElijah

I want a new max Payne game so bad

Not-a-Russian

I mean. I think it's great, I just suck at shooting in any game 🤣 But even for me its alright. I like the weapons wheel that pauses time. That's what was missing from the first game. Cause the first game had the weapons wheel in real time.

LetsGoBrandon57

It’s that way in red dead online as well, but we don’t speak of rd online

[deleted]

Its crazy how useless deadeye feels in rdo lmao

LetsGoBrandon57

Paint it black is the only useful one and that’s even pushing it

JOHNANCHOA

And slippery bastard

Not-a-Russian

Oh, yeah I guess it is, I didn't think of that. I just don't play online games usually. I'm too slow for how most people play and I don't wanna embarrass myself lol.

KCharles311

I didn't like RDO, because they allow auto-aim, which forces me to use auto-aim, which I hate using.

Drakenile

Can't speak ill of the dead. Jk (mostly anyway)

bbbbears

Man but I LOVE being able to pause the game in RDR1 and look over the weapons in the menu, much easier to compare. And also going into your satchel in the first game pauses it. I really liked that.

Thomas_Shelby69420

It’s pretty awesome i just wish the enemy’s shooting system was better so it would be a bit more challenging that way instead of being this one man army fending off 50+ Pinkertons by yourself it would be cooler if it was like 10 pinkertons but there all accurate shooters and there guns do more damage that way you would feel a sense of fear and have to strategize instead of just going in there like Jon wick and killing everyone and taking 20 bullets to the head and be fine lol

CosmicTurtle504

Who needs body armor when you have minty big game meat, amirite?

gr8fullyded

Play Mafia 1 on classic mode!! Three enemies with tommy guns will pin you and make you shit your pants Edit: like in the best way possible

hawtdawg101

if on pc, there are certain mods that tweak gun fighting behavior. npcs have better accuracy while doing more dmg and such

[deleted]

Yeah I wish the combat was more like The Last of Us, where each enemy is a major threat, but there are fewer of them, so you need to be tactical about how you approach the fight. Just having every mission end with a big, loud, dumb shooting gallery really flies in the face of everything else the game does well, IMHO.

Ian_A17

This. Would be so much more badass as you against fewer but more effective enemies. Would also feel more real.

fakingsick

Pc goes crazy for this reason, mods PDO and law and crime rebalance really add some challenge. Bounty hunters actually hunt me, and If I'm not quick, one headshot could kill me

TheOJsGlove

I think it was important to sort of differentiate the gunplay from GTA more than RDR1 did before. I can kind of see where they want GTA to be the more arcadey-zaney game and the Red Dea series being the more grounded experience. I think the gunplay worked quite well and helped add a bit of immersion to the game. That being said, I hate the PVP in this game. The introduction of tonics and the Cards has really made the PVP a sweat-fest and balancing nightmare compared to RDR where the only thing you needed to balance were the guns. I miss RDR PVP as it felt casual and fun.

Merc931

I understand why they'd want to add in cards. It seems like a good idea to sort of let players build their characters and improve them beyond just gear. However, they were done very poorly and put anyone who didn't have maxed out cards at a huge disadvantage.

Jaymuhs

I wish they weren’t in the game at all, RDR2’s PVP would’ve been so fun without them.

proto_4747

I think PVP focused cards in general are just stupid. Deadeye cards are cool, but ones that reduce player taken damage or negate certain effects are just ruining PVP, in free roam and in pvp modes

WyattR-

Also some cards are 1000000x better than others. Everyone always says "paint it black" is the best card but you literally cannot counter "slippery bastard"

Merc931

I've found Slippery Bastard is hard countered by switching to free aim.

GamingWaffle123

I like it. Especially the takedowns

Head-Of-The-Table

Love that style of having a special focus on brutal shots

still_gonna_send_it

I love the takedowns I do it in the middle of a firefight just to blow someone’s brains all over the mud. I know this isn’t a gun but I have an issue with the hatchets. When I tackle someone while holding a hatchet I do so with the intention of hacking their face after but it just switches to fists and all I can do is punch them

[deleted]

Yeah it's annoying. You can tackle people with machetes/swords though. And the hammer in RDO.

Isaac-Mckinnon

Except when takedowns are activated by three different buttons so that there's no way to run up to any and execute them like you could in RDR1. You basically have to run at an enemy stop, walk up to him and execute him. Tackling shouldn't be activated by grappling button, shooting button and melee button. Just one would've been enough.

Apophis_36

Its hit or miss with me imo, i can respect that is has a slight complexity to it but at the same time i just prefer the fun of red dead 1's style

AFishNamedFreddie

Red Dead 1 feels so good. Once you mastered "the flick" where you hit left trigger to aim at their chest, then flick the right stick up just right to head shot them, it felt so damn good.

Apophis_36

Best feeling, ngl though, red dead 1 is the one rockstar game i play without aim assist or autoaim, the game feels that good to me

PaschalisG16

Auto aim squad

Head-Of-The-Table

Same. I don’t like nor dislike it completely, it’s somewhere in the middle. The clunky mechanics kinda bother me during free roam when I go killing spree against cops lol; otherwise it adds up a realism and makes it challenging most of the times. I just don’t like the movements, it’s real slow

doctor_judas

I absolutely love it, but I don't know how to explain why. It just feels great.

ddddm99

I love the “restriction” of the single action feel with revolvers and having to manually chamber the next round for rifles too. Really makes me take my time and line up my shots instead of dumping 8 shots into some guy’s body

Serious_Revolution77

I loved it the game felt so smooth and way less snappier then rdr1 which didn’t make it clunky and a good system to use

Nodima

Thought it was pretty much perfect, but I also felt that way about GTA V. I know a lot of people find that ludicrous and just want to free aim but I find the auto lock to body, flick up to headshot so satisfying and it really allows the physics engine and gun mechanics to stand out over focusing on lining up shots. The technical nuance adds even more to it with RDR. A contender for my favorite aspect of the game whenever I come back to it.

SteamTrainDude

Yeah, definitely

ishanG24

You really feel the impact of every bullet and realise how shit guns were back then, how hard it was to use them.

Isaac-Mckinnon

You really feel the impact of every bullet and realise h̶o̶w̶ ̶s̶h̶i̶t̶ ̶g̶u̶n̶s̶ ̶w̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶b̶a̶c̶k̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶n̶ how shit guns were in RDR2.

Ben_Elf1984

I likes it coz its eazy... and I sucks at games!

[deleted]

Love it! the dead eye shooting and slowmo kills are so fun

Gavin_Derban

I love the gun mechanics and i love the hand to hand combat even more! it feels so satisfying to play with

Head-Of-The-Table

Definitely satisfying

TogusPerogus

It's really good but Rockstar will never do better than Max Payne 3

Head-Of-The-Table

I wonder which game can have a better shooting system than Max Payne 3. It’s been a decade.. and I feel TLOU2 is the closest competitor. Still MP3 is goated.

[deleted]

I love how powerful and dangerous the weapons in TLOU1/2 feel, but idk, something about the aiming mechanics just feel slightly off to me. Like they're not *quite* responsive enough or something. Still great, but not as good as Max Payne.

jjzrv

The only thing I don't like is the enemy's reaction after getting shot.Nothing,as long as it isn't fatal all good for them,no pain,no fear ,nothing. They are basically bullet sponges.

ArthuriusMinimus

I've definitely had enemies go down and then get back up after being wounded. They'll also flee sometimes if you killed their buddies. There's a whole different map marker for wounded predator animals and an animation to finish them off with a knife.

allmyaccountsgone

Hell no. they react lots to getting shot

alienss4

I think what he means is they'll just get right back up and start shooting again. Like yeah if you shoot them in the leg or stomach they might be hunched over and limping but it doesn't matter much when they just jump right back in the fight anyway.

[deleted]

They should've added the Max Payne dive mechanic. We were halfway there with Dead Eye.

[deleted]

Eh, I disagree. Don't really want to play a cowboy Matrix simulator.

elhijodeputa652

Honestly, I spent my first two or three playthroughs with auto-aim on, and on my playthrough rn, I'm using free-aim. It really makes it more fun and makes u think about ur shots more if that makes any sense. IMO, auto-aim sucks, but with free-aim it is such a better experience.

PaschalisG16

I use partial auto aim (probably the lowest auto aim possible). It's really satisfying when you adjust the target a little higher than the assisted target, to get a headshot.

[deleted]

The only thing I’m not a fan of is when I press the right trigger to pull out the gun, but I press it too hard and shoot someone I didn’t mean to shoot just yet. Besides that, love the system.

alexp796

Press R1/RB to holster/unholster your weapon without shooting it! If you click it twice when putting it away you do a neat spin too.

still_gonna_send_it

It’s actually L1 and idk about Xbox I assume LB but yeah I love doing that spin. If it doesn’t work I’m required to take the gun out again and do it

ThisIsTheNewSleeve

I liked it a lot. Way better than any other Rockstar game before then. It really made you feel like a cowboy. I do have to say the way dead-eye changed during the course of the game was a bit odd. At first it's one mechanic, then another, then another it was a bit jarring at first.

still_gonna_send_it

Same about deadeye. I got good at moving my reticule R-L at head level now I have to actually stop and manually paint it’s kinda hard at first

nukaman-117

Not a fan of it at all really it's slow and aim assist is way too good I just think RDR1 did it better still love the game but I wish it was better

Head-Of-The-Table

Understandable. Many including me felt that the gunplay is slow, but I don’t hate it

Isaac-Mckinnon

It's not that it's slow. It's that it's really really badly designed. Tlou1&2 have slow gunplay, but it's so much better than RDR2's. The problem is that RDR2 combat is unresponsive, clunky and lacks challenge. You can't die, you have near unlimited slowmo and guns are unpredictably inaccurate forcing you to abuse deadeye or auto aim. Free aim feels like sh!t and that shouldn't be the case. Look at RDR1 for a system that is much better designed.

Head-Of-The-Table

Couldn’t have said it better. It feels ‘unresponsive’ most of the times, maybe that’s the reason it’s hard to get headshots most of the times. I have to shoot 3-4 times to get one kill

shaqfu9

I miss being able to disarm enemies, the gut shot animations and dialogues and enemies falling off their horses when shot at the legs from RDR1. In general, gunplay felt stronger and more satisfying in RDR1.

Gigabyte2022

You get all of that in 2 aswell.....

AKThmpson

Using it without auto aim i dislike because on controller it feels slower than other shooters. even max sensitivity still feels slow

Head-Of-The-Table

I never disable auto aiming in any of the games, that’s how much I suck without the assist lmao. And I agree, assist sim feels slow in consoles

ilostmy1staccount

Easily some of the best gunplay, I think one of the biggest problems with online is they got rid of the single player movement and shooting mechanics.

Robertx

Yes I had to stop playing after that, it was too arcadey

ilostmy1staccount

Yeah after that it was all gta tryhards and drip feeding from there

gamingkills

It's ok. Fun, but movement is definitely " modern gta like", characters have mass, they accelerate. For "realistic" game about the wild west it's functional. But there are "crispier" third person shooters, like naught dog games. Here I just felt clunky. Shooting itself was well made, sounds effects, gunblasts, ragdoll phisics and all. But "shooting mechanics" aren't about shooting, for me. It's more about movement, dodging bullets, predicting your enemy, reacting to them. Here I was just consuming extroardinary amonuts of cocaine, slowing down time, and every time something moved it's head I marked it, and shot it.

Head-Of-The-Table

Am I the only who hated the dodging/covering mechanism in the game ? It was deadass slow and made me difficult while shooting at a bunch of enemies everytime. To me, I felt that the movements were really slow and made it harder to shoot or get headshots. Also another reason could be because I’m less skilled in the game compared to others :D

bisexual_t-rex

It annoys me if I want to shoulder my repeater I need to go the menu and some the pistols sound weak other than that it’s great

Heroicshrub

It's wayyy too easy, kinda feels more like a movie than a game sometimes.

MattIsNotARedditor

It's badass and just challenging enough. It felt unique enough to not be a total breeze and gunfights to be boring. And the executions... the goddamn executions!! Absolutely badass. I just wish there were more.

[deleted]

I was not a fan of the shooting. Absolute dislike. I turned off auto aim right away, and it was a major slog. I was pretty much spamming dead eye and desperately trying to land shots otherwise. Not a fan of having the auto aim system do it for me. In comparison, another Rockstar game, Max Payne 3, feels perfect and fluid.

PS5013

As someone playing with MnK I hated it. Every action had an input lag and the delayed shooting made it very hard to hit moving stuff (like on horses) with normally decent aim in other games. Also, the PC version was clearly not optimized for MnK, because the hitboxes are very small. Rockstar clearly designed the game with the intention of Controller Aim Assist doing the work for the player. RDR Online PvP is unenjoyable because of that. It might be more realistic this way, but it causes a lot of frustration.

No_Doubt_About_That

Liked the system for the story, online when I got found to it just felt a little too quick/not as substantial.

[deleted]

I can pvp on rdo better, than I can pvp on gtao. I really don't know why, other than gtao feels like golden eye on the N64 and rdr 2 feels more, grounded and more smooth. Gta felt to showy I guess. If that makes sense.

Raymado

I always loved it and still do. Mostly because if it was gone you wouldn’t be the badass gunslinger we all know to love

still_gonna_send_it

Arthur just pulling out a finger gun in a duel and getting shot in the head

LilRex5000

My favorite shooting mechanics of any game so far

Dr_Strange_Jnr

I love how every button press counts in it. But since I’m new to the game (probably only around 7-10 hours on my first play through) it’s a pain to realise I forgot to cock the gun whilst in a big gunfight

still_gonna_send_it

Oh man if I could go back and start over without any knowledge of the game 😍 you’re in for quite a story!

Dr_Strange_Jnr

I’m really enjoying this game. I’ve played the open world on my uncles game long after he finished it all, so I’m pretty much clueless as to what happens. Can’t wait for hours and hours of fun

YellowOnionBelt

Get the fuck out of this sub lad. For the best 🙏 come back when you're done

Dr_Strange_Jnr

That was a rollercoaster of a comment. Will do. Thanks for the tip

YellowOnionBelt

Do me a favour and make an update post once you've finished the story! Enjoy!

seron_cardgage

One thing I very much dislike is the auto aim, like it'll automatically lock on to a target when I'm trying to aim at something else. Very annoying. Beyond that it's decent enough.

ZombieSiayer84

As much as I love RDR2, I dislike most of the “realistic” mechanics in the game, shooting included. It’s just unnecessarily convoluted and bloated, and I think RDR1 did it better. I got used to the mechanics and it flowed after quite some time, but little things would always cause a hiccup that never ended well for me or an NPC. How many of us have whipped out our gun intending to threaten someone and instead blew their head off? Or run and try to jump on our horse and instead tackle an innocent and beat the shit out of them? That should never happen.

sealing_tile

I love it, but wasn’t finding it challenging enough the first couple play-throughs. Just finished the epilogue for the third time after playing in 1st person with no reticle for all story missions. Talk about a fun challenge! Horseback shooting goes from “I’m a cavalry god” to “holy fuck I can’t tell what’s going on at all”

Ok-Inspector-3045

I mostly like it but Rockstars aim mechanics always tip toe between dummy baby easy auto aim and clunky. Never inbetween

Resident_081

I absolutely love the way the shooting mechanics are handled in this game. Punchy, measured, immersive. Having to perform that extra step of readying the action of your weapon as you shoot is a really satisfying touch. I can’t believe GTAV was such a colossal downgrade in the shooting department coming off of games that actually had good gunplay like Red Dead 1 & Max Payne 3.

[deleted]

I like it, the guns feel both stylised and weighty, finishers with them aren’t tied to a rage bar or any nonsense which is cool.

TheKingBrycen

I absolutely hate that I have to click once to fire and click again to cock the hammer back. Coming from smoother shooters it really throws my aim off. Mouse and keyboard is brutal with that mechanic

[deleted]

[удалено]

still_gonna_send_it

I hear everything else you said but I have to point out that most creatures on Earth die from one shot to the head 😂

Isaac-Mckinnon

But would most humans survive 4 shots from the cattleman point blank? Probably not. So why is it so pathetically weak in Rdr2?

sudopm

Right... so if the goal is realism why not make the gunplay more mechanically interesting in other ways? Deadeye could be so much more than just a button press instakill mechanic, there could be actual timing involved to executing the shots or something. It just feels way shallow haha

Wolf687

I absolutely loved it. Probably my favorite gun mechanics in any game.

[deleted]

It’s pretty good, I just wish I could use more guns rather than what we have now

The_Radio_Host

There’s so many intricacies that it took me awhile to learn every trick. Heck, I didn’t even realize you could reload your gun before you used every round until after almost a year of playing. Once I did figure it all out it became my favorite, though.

Ulfricstorm192

I loved how immersive ut was. And I loved the little kinda cinematic ones when you shot while stood directly next to the person

VickiVampiress

Love it. Like some others have said, *way* better than GTA. The *only* thing I *dislike* about it is the lack of customization of settings compared to GTA. The "acceleration" setting in RDR2 never made sense to me. You'd think it determines aim acceleration like in GTA, but it doesn't. Otherwise, once you fine tune your settings and find something you like it's actually great. I still prefer all the options GTA offers us, but the gunplay itself is just so much more satisfying and fun than GTA. Especially the manual cocking of revolvers and repeaters. That took me off guard first play through. It's amazing! Makes you feel like you're the one shooting.

lycketysplyt92

Feels appropriate for the time period if that make sense like the way you actually had to pick your shots to make them count you could never just go all guns blazing cause if you miss one shot could be the last one you take

askmu

One of my favorites and it’s perfect for the game.

johnzy87

I think the shooting in this game was the worst part of an otherwise amazing game, it was very hard to hit enemy’s without using some of the heavy aim assist options / auto lockon and I prefer the feeling of getting some good shots without help.

thenovas18

Inferior to max Payne 3, better than gta v

[deleted]

I like it so much simply due to the drawing system which is fun

winged-dragon-of-ra

I just hate the that camera wobble thing when you’re in a gunfight. Other than that the shooting is top notch, would love to have Max Payne 3’s shooting mechanics. That game felt the best for shooting

SirRavenBat

Honestly, I wish it was slower. I recently watched A Fistful of Dollars and that showed me how cool it would be if combat was this slow burn and either had really drawn out fights or very fast snappy ones that end in a few shots. Granted, I still would like some of the fights as they are I just feel like it's a bit too GTA with the way the combat works and not really "old west" enough. Dead eye helps but it's not like Max Payne dodge-rolling where you make it harder on yourself by not using it. You can go through long stretches of gameplay without ever needing to use dead eye until you enter some scripted scene and go "oh yeah, that's a thing I can do".

KCharles311

I both loved and hated it. I loved it for how challenging combat was. And hated it once you figure out how OP deadeye is when maxed. Play it without using dead eye, except for near death emergencies. Also with 0 aim assist, and auto-brain-lock turned off. It's a lot more fun when you have to use cover, and assorted weapons to take down groups. A couple stealth knife kills, maim and kill a few more with dynamite, then lining up a few patiently well placed shots to kill the last few remaining; that type of stuff. Mowing down 7 guys in 3.5 seconds gets pretty boring with deadeye.

Isaac-Mckinnon

Agree with all except for the no aim assist part. If you're on consoles, aim assist is a massive help. The reason is that the reticle is too wild so a little magnetism is good to offset the jiterring reticle. Playing free aim with aim assist turned to 2/4 is the best way to enjoy the gunplay for me. And I say that as someone who was playing free aim, no assist for years. Some assist makes the game more fun. Auto aim is cancer though. I don't know what rockstar was thinking when they had it on by default.

ras_2004_shaikh

Red dead's shooting system is very different from anything I've experienced before. I play mostly on keyboard and mouse, and I have to say that I did not enjoy the experience. It may be more realistic. But I am used to and enjoy GTA's system of shooting better. RDR2 feels slow and clunky. Not to mention I prolly can't shoot anything without Dead Eye. I know that players on controllers would disagree. They've got that sweet auto aim. I guess it's my fault for playing on keyboard and mouse.

nioPomPio

felt great, but i used a controller on pc with aim assist

Select-Battle9081

I like it cause you get a clear showing of who you can shoot and who you can't

Dazy_Chainz

But how do you like it with auto-aim turned off?

ChilliadMan

I wish bullets felt impactful like the first game. I loved enemies stumbling off a single shot in the knee.

Ancient-Ad-6011

If you're shooting requires auto-aim, by default, that means it's probably not very good. Even those driven to turning off the auto-aim and messing about with sliders report the shooting as frustrating. Rockstar have never had 'proper' gun play. It's not what I come to the games for. I am always surprised to see people say they love it, becuase it's just a lock-on/headshot system with zero challenge or progression. But yeah, to sum up, the shooting is pretty crappy overall.

PerformanceDropPc

In singleplayer it's amazing, but for some reason it feels wonky in rdo

Marza1993

Rdr1 shooting was way better

paleo_anon

I love it in single player, I'm not really good at it in online because there's no deadeye.

autism-kun6861

Overall liked it in every way other than aiming. I'm a free aim player and can definitley feel its an afterthought, same as in GTA5. I hope GTA6 ditches auto aim all together and has more modern 3rd/1st person shooter mechanics.

Isaac-Mckinnon

Oh boy. Where do I start. As a Free aim veteran since release date and as someone who makes RDR combat videos, I have to be honest. It's the worst gunplay system from a Rockstar game since the PS3 era. Literally all previous rockstar games from GTA4 onwards have better aiming systems than RDR2 and I can fully explain why. EDIT: The following criticisms are with Free Aiming in mind. 1) Reticle Sway. RDR2 has implemented a mechanic that makes the reticle sway unpredictably before it stabilizes itself. This means that there's always a level of unwieldyness to your aim. No matter how much you train, you will never fully master the aiming because the sway can never be predicted, only be waited out. So in essence reticle sway makes you wait several seconds between shots to regain accuracy. 2) Reticle bloom. This is the second mechanic that affects accuracy and is also based on delaying your shots. Essentially, everytime you shoot your gun becomes momentarily less accurate. Now this makes sense because it's trying to simulate recoil. The problem is that guns become too inaccurate and take a good amount of time to regain accuracy. That would mostly be fine, but in combination with reticle Sway you now have 2 mechanics that both slow down combat. Let me remind you you that we are already using slow firing, slow reloading guns and enemies can regularly take 4 shots to the torso before dying. Combat was already slow enough because of the time period weaponry, but by adding these mechanics rockstar has turned it into a slog. Even worse, reticle bloom doesn't go away when hipfiring. Hipfiring is already less accurate than aim firing but reticle bloom makes it even less accurate. 3) Weak guns/ Spongy enemies. NPC can survive 3-4 shots to the torso from a cattleman/Schofield. The double action is even worse. Let me remind you that these weapons only hold six bullets at a time, fire slowly and reload slowly. The sponginess of enemies, combined with the inaccuracy introduced by the sway and bloom mechanics means that you will have to waste your entire mag on each enemy, shooting him with half the mag and missing the rest because if the unpredictable gun sway. Spend a few seconds reloading and then on to the next enemy. The funny thing is that RDR2 didn't even need to have these problems. Modders have removed gun sway and increased weapon damage and the combat has become insanely good, even with controllers. [Hell, especially with controllers.](https://youtu.be/U_4jpcsYF3Y) Rockstar had already made a far superior combat system in RDR1. RDR1 has no gun sway, it has reasonable recoil and guns are absolutely destructive. RDR1 also has better difficulty balance and.a better health system. John will die much faster than Arthur but he has faster health Regen, making combat more skill based and fast, however still limited by the inherent slowness of the era's weapons. It doesn't help that RDR2 downgraded RDR1's ragdoll physics either. And I say all this as someone with [substantial experience of RDR2 's free aim combat](https://youtu.be/yv50RVp063s) It's simply underwhelming and far behind systems from RDR1, Max Payne 3, The last of 1&2

Head-Of-The-Table

I appreciate you for having such a deep understanding about gunplay in a video game. You truly seem to know a lot about it, and I agree, Max Payne 3 has the best shooting system in a video game. It primarily focuses to make the shooting real and far more predictable than how it’s used to be. Whereas, in Red Dead Redemption 2, it always feels that the gunplay is clunky even with the aim assist on.. majorly because of the reticule style, as you said. Instead of ensuring a complete experience in a game about gunslingers.. I wonder why they made it quite complicated when it comes to that. This was an awesome write up!

I’m pretty fresh into playing it for the first time and I kind of like it. Sometimes I still get confused, especially if I’m ambushed. But that’s a me problem more than anything. I just love this game so far. I’m spending more time wandering around and hunting than playing the story lol.

Head-Of-The-Table

You are going to experience the best story told in a video game, enjoy. I would suggest you to go slow and stay away from all kind of spoilers. The slower you go, the more you’ll understand and learn more about the game. You are surely in for an experience of a lifetime! No exaggeration

[deleted]

I loved the first one. I didn’t finish it, I got stuck, put it down for too long and couldn’t remember the controls and just never went back. I am absolutely loving it so far. And I love playing at my own pace and just exploring. I think I might be towards the end of Chapter 2. I played all day on my days off work lol. Not many games get me like that.

Elitericky

Dead eye is great but I think it’s one of the biggest downsides for the gameplay, it slows down combat and just ends with headshots on npcs every fight. I usually play without using dead eye unless the games makes me enter it.

ben_hurr_610

Man this subreddit needs it Red Dead Redemption 3 moment.

FrankieNukNuk

I like the feel of it better in RDR1 it actually feels like I’m shooting a gun. In RDR2 I kinda feel like I’m shooting guns with silencers on them or lasers.

PippinBPimpin

I love it, but it was so hard to play Call of Juarez right after. Just constantly firing a second shot by accident. But yeah, I love the weightyness of everything. The shotguns are some of my favorites in all of gaming, but imo the bolt action feels really clunky and slow for something that seems to take the same amount of shots as a repeater to put someone down

Gandalfffffffff

I think it's too fast, my immersion usually gets broken when Arthur easily guns down 20+ dudes who were standing in an enclosed space that made it even easier. So I just wish it was slower, and had more guns and customisation (like different grips, and having the Navy Revolver in Story Mode)

Sxpreme1629

loved it but still suffers from rockstars shitty 3rd person feel

shaaaakyt

i think it could be improved, it’s very simplistic, but the effects of how people bleed and get bullets is fascinating

Tontomas

How do you not like it... It's a masterpiece of a gun system

[deleted]

The shooting is fun and all but I rarely see anyone talk about every other combat mechanic in the game, I absolutely love how fucking meaty it feels to punch someone, I live for the moments I lasso somebody and throw them off a horse, tackling dudes who stay still and taking them out with a chop to their head or a stab to their gut feels so satisfying. Shooting is fun but man every other combat mechanic is so good.

NicholasART

I love how they handled the guns. There's just enough weigh behind the guns, the shooting is just enough to feel the deliberate slowness of it, and to top it off, the shooting was designed to make the player to manually ejects the empty cartridges to get the new ones in. It's like you press the fire button, the gun goes off, but you have to hit the button again to replace the cartridges in order to fire again.

Revolutionary_Eye707

Pretty good but outdated tbh

Jburrisx

I like rdr2 gunplay, just wish we can turn off the hit markers. RDR1 had no hit markers just blood splatter.

ChickenWangKang

It was, and still is, the best from rockstar. I hope they take some things from RDR2 and implement them in GTA6

Head-Of-The-Table

Overall, the best from Rockstar in terms of shooting system is Max Payne 3, but I really respect your opinion. The gunplay in Red Dead Redemption 2 was satisfying in every ways.

Sweet_Taurus0728

It's the most fun shooting mechanic in any game I've ever played. I love it and don't understand how others can't.

Head-Of-The-Table

Because the movements were slow.. and the cover mechanic is frustrating most of the times. The shooting is a challenge even with aim assist on, especially on the controllers. I personally prefer a balance between arcade and realism like GTA 4 and Red Dead 1. So it honestly depends on the preference. I don’t dislike it though.

GhostOfMufasa

I loved it. Feels very suitable for the game. There's honestly very little I can nitpick about RDR2 in terms of gameplay mechanics or story etc, one of those games where even the negatives are so miniscule they don't really affect enjoyment of the game.

Head-Of-The-Table

Agreed there.. it added a lot of realism to the story and made sense
