Diogo has a release clause we aren’t willing to meet. I think after the international break they’ll lower their price and the rumors will start to fly.
Thing is, we have to sell now. Like right now. If by the end of the month we don't make 50M in player sells, we're in deep financial trouble. So we have two weeks to make anything happen. I expected conversations to develop over the last couple of days but the fact there seem to be no advances is worrying , at least for us (Porto).
That is why this whole saga is so weird to me. As of right now , we only have an handful of players who are worth anything significant. Otávio, Galeno, Evanilson, Pepê and Diogo, maybe 2 or 3 other players if any team has a board as bad as ours. No one is even rumoured to be linked to any team other than Diogo to United. I wish I knew what the hell is going on.
Could the financial issues be overblown? Or you have a buyer already for Diogo?
That is crazy..
One of the far out rumours I saw was that we are looking at Onana to drive the price down for Diogo but there is absolutely no way our board are this competent. We probably just saw him in the CL final and were like fuck me he’s good
No no, they are very very real. Our board already had to get a loan recently just so we could try to stay afloat. The situation is really really bad. And Diogo, as far as we know, only has been linked to you guys for what seem like the last 6 - 10 months.
What's the clause in euros? 75m? 80?
You have a hole of about 50m right? do you think they'd take 50m guaranteed and then 15-20 in bonuses like (5m for CL qualification, 5m for 50 appearances (both very likely in the next season or two at least) and then another 5/10 more optimistic ones?
Yes correct right now is at 50M that we somehow need in the next 2 weeks. And his release clause is set at 75M I think, IIRC.
I think 50M guaranteed would be the minimum at best. I suggested a couple of weeks ago in a thread that MAYBE, this is just my 2 cents, 55 guaranteed + a player ( Telles was my guess since he is loved by the fans and would fill one of our worst positions ) + bonuses would maybe work. But thats my opinion, who knows what our shitty clueless board has in mind.
You don't say you will lower it until you need to say you will lower it though.
Our interest in Onana could be to force their hand because the only big club that will need a keeper will be Inter if Onana leaves. Everyone else is sorted and Costa might try and push it too, to avoid taking a step backwards or sideways.
Bayern possibly too, depending on what's going on with Neuer and his injuries. Sommer seems a stopgap so wouldn't be surprised if they don't pounce on a top young keeper as the long-term successor.
And he just signed that current contract with the new release clause last November: https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1588260133297352706?s=19
I think he signed it to help Porto have more negotiation power. Meeting that release clause is
voluntarily ripped off.

Price and probably the fact that EtH has extensive background with Onana. How we didn’t pick him up for a free last year but rather went for a loan of Dubravka is beyond me though.
I read somewhere that he had agreed with Inter during the winter transfer window before EtH left Ajax so there was no chance for him to be considered to join Man Utd at the time
Lol he had agreement with Inter long long time back, when Erik wasn't even appointed and he wasn't even playing due to multiple issues, this revisionism is actually amazing and surprisingly upvoted.
More realistic is that we sign our annual quota of a 3rd gk this summer for nothing and give ddg a 250k + performance bonus contract.
I have zero confidence in Glazers, Arnold, and Murtough.
He is arguably the best ball-playing keeper in the world right now. The only thing that scares me is that he's too comfortable with the ball on his feet.
> I don't know if he still does that at Inter.
Not as much. The playing style is much different and Inter are less dominant than Ajax is in possession. I doubt he'd be this crazy for us if he comes. At least, not until we're dominant in possession in the prem and EtH is comfortable with playing such a high line.
If that's the case, he's sure worth pursuing if the price is right. Costa also looks great; he's similar to Ederson with his long passes, IMO. But Onana looks more confident with building up from the back.
> Onana looks more confident with building up from the back.
I've never seen Costa play bar a handful of Portugal games, but I think we both know how good Onana would be in this regard.
At Ajax, honestly, I was convinced that he's not just a complete GK, but a complete player. My only misgivings is his attitude. Both for the Ajax exit and the way he was sent home from Cameroon in the WC.
The context for the Cameroon thing matters a lot. Their dinosaur of a head coach wanted him to stop passing out from the back and do more hoofball. He called out that archaic tactic and got burnt by Samuel eto and co who run the Cameroon FA like a cult. He subsequently retired from international football which actually favors any new buyers, cos there would be no mid season AFCONs to worry about.
> Their dinosaur of a head coach wanted him to stop passing out from the back and do more hoofball. He called out that archaic tactic and got burnt by Samuel eto and co who run the Cameroon FA like a cult.
I understand that, but that's still mutinous and its worrying. I do still hope we get him, but I also hope that he doesn't behave like this if things don't always go his way.
I can’t imagine what some of the TV pundits would say post match if Onana did this sort of thing in the PL and conceded from it. They’d have a full on meltdown.
He also does this newfangled thing of coming off his line at corners and shit. It's wild! Like jumps up in the air for the ball and catches it with his hands. Craziest shit I ever saw.
Not really, the best midfielders in the world lose the ball regularly, if a keeper loses it more often than not it'd be goal.
I don't want Barthez 2.0.
Every players United are interested in, will automatically go to 80-100 millions regardless of their previous values. But Bayern and Dortmund can buy them for $20-30 millions.
Legacy of Woodward and Glazers scums
Scouting network is like a B2B sales job. It takes time to build , it costs money to recruit good scouts with large network and good working relationships.
It also needs someone in the center with a vision of the squad 5-10 years from now, to build and maintain this network to spot the talents that fit that future vision. It's not a coincidence that city can buy players of the caliber like Alvarez from Argentina for 14 millions. That's the fruit of a well run scouting network.
Glazers have no interest in any of these. United squad quality and subsequently, its football performance means little to nothing to the scums, current or future
Our scouts have been or atleast used to be on the ball when Ole was here, but our board and transfer policy let it all down.
We're "in" for Alvarez, Caicedo, Haaland (Only due to Ole), Ruben Dias, Bellingham, even Martinelli who had a trial that didn't work out
If you actually think about it, I think this mad lad will also give us a heart attack when he’s driving into midfield with the ball lol
We are not used to that, it will take some getting used to, fun to watch as well
Im not worried too much, I mean we’ve seen Ederson make some mistakes as well (the Scotty goal JUST before the pandemic at OT comes to mind) but I know it comes with thw territory. Im actually trying to see the funny side of it, united fans havent seen such a goalkeeper play for us, so its will be fun and scary at the same time.
Also, just seeing the avenues it unlocks for is tactically as well.
Probably the price, Porto usually drive a very hard bargain and he has a big release clause, people seem to think they have financial issues though and need to sell players so who knows.
Porto are ridiculously easy to negotiate with. Their board is corrupt as fuck and doesn't give a shit how much the player goes for, as long as they get a big share. Nearly all their sales go for a value below what's expected
henderson sale + both his and ddg's wages off the books = onana fee. its a tap in which ofcourse means its not gonna happen. cant wait for jassim to fuck murtough arnold judge fletch and that new guy all off. useless the lot of em.
Okay, so I know he's retired, but hear me out.
This guy has 100% clean sheet rate in his entire career as a goalkeeper. And never once lost or even drew a game in his entire goalkeeper career. I'm sure he'll do just as great if he were to start playing again today. And since he's retired there won't be competition to sign him.
I present our new sweeper keeper,
John O'Shea
They got along well, issues were with the fans and board mostly, because he left on a free after they stuck by him during the drugs ban and the fans felt hard done by.
I mean let's be honest we wouldn't even be entertaining talks if him and Erik didn't get on in the first place, that would get shut down quick.
https://twitter.com/TheEuropeanLad/status/1669328252249227265?s=20
Most Ajax fans I've heard seem to think their relationship was fine and the issue was with the fans and the club management.
Not true, Ajax still paid his salary during the time. After he came back, he even let Ajax agree a deal to sell him before cancelling it. Came back with poor and disinterested performances and then left on a free.
Ajax usually avoid letting players leave on a free, Onana just shit on their good faith when they could have just terminated his contract with cause
I wonder why Chelsea pulled out? There is a easy pathway to doing this deal with Chelsea wanting Onana and Inter wanting Lukaku. Interesting nonetheless...
Diogo Costa is definitely the more well rounded keeper similar to Alisson. Onana is the best with the ball at his feet like Ederson. Can't go wrong with either keep tbh both are able to play ten hags style
I think Erik is more than happy to spend as little as 10m on a keeper who suits his game. All round may not be that good but still contribute more to our game than David did.
If we're spending big on a goalkeeper it has to be Costa for me.Get him in and we'd have him for the next 10 years, top quality already and going to improve.
Are Inter Milan really going to let him go?
He's the only goalkeeper they have. I thought he was intended to be a long term replacement for Handanovic.
No i haven't, but i had intuition of what it could mean.
My comment was an attempt at making a dumb funny statement on it to make people laugh. Sadly it failed lol
Just me or would anyone feel scammed paying 50+ mill for this guy
Just another antony situation, inter literally got him on a FREE , nobody wanted him other than lyon. Where is our ambition and united like idiots as usual are happy to just spend 50 mill + when it's known he has attitude issues
It just feels like we are trying to recreate the ajax team id rather get diogo costa who has a lot more potential
>inter literally got him on a FREE , nobody wanted him other than lyon.
Context is important, he was banned from football for a year. When he came back teams were not sure if he was the same player or not. Inter took a punt and it worked out.
Inter were in a simar situation to us. Their legendary goalkeeper wasn't good enough anymore so they benched him and took a risk with Onana.
Meanwhile we've been happy to persist with mediocrity in goal since 2018.
I rather they don’t have any rumours and then suddenly deal is done like what happened with Casemiro. Everytime there is a rumour the goddamn price triples.
Curious why the Porto fella wasn’t as heavily linked as the rest? Thought we want him and he doesn’t mind us?
Diogo has a release clause we aren’t willing to meet. I think after the international break they’ll lower their price and the rumors will start to fly.

You’d know more than anyone, is he worth the hype? I’ve only seen highlight videos which make him look elite of course. He’s got me extremely excited
Yes he is, like I said a couple of weeks ago, I am just a little biased but to me he has top 3 GK in the world potential written all over him.
I thought that but Porto fans seem to think due to the financial situation they’ll come below it.

I don't wanna leave my Mrs. But if dua lipa comes after me then don't blame me lol
Price and probably the fact that EtH has extensive background with Onana. How we didn’t pick him up for a free last year but rather went for a loan of Dubravka is beyond me though.

Exactly it
Makes sense! Cheers for letting me know
it’s wages. De Gea is eating 3 starters worth of salary. We can’t hire another starter and have De Gea be a backup. Doesn’t make sense financially
Jesus, forgot about Dubravka 😰
Lol he had agreement with Inter long long time back, when Erik wasn't even appointed and he wasn't even playing due to multiple issues, this revisionism is actually amazing and surprisingly upvoted.
How is this revisionism? I asked a question? You’re not really bringing anything to the discussion
He is linked and has been throughout the year. Just depends how many click bait articles the journalists are putting out to drive a narrative
No where reputable though. If you spend time here, no links, on twitter, shit loads
You’d think by now, people would learn to ignore Portuguese press linking us to players.

You sure he's not a Porto fan?
Is your friend blind? You can see him doing it in literally every game, hes clearly comfortable on the ball.
Watch Chelsea get him, while we overpay for Onana
Seriously, I think this will be it.
More realistic is that we sign our annual quota of a 3rd gk this summer for nothing and give ddg a 250k + performance bonus contract. I have zero confidence in Glazers, Arnold, and Murtough.
£50M until the next report magically triples that number
Nah, base is 80mil. Nobody goes for 50mil anymore unless you're like... in League 1.
Or selling to Liverpool
Or Bayern
Kim min Jae confirmed to Bayern for €18m fee. Here we go! /s
Triple? That’s not United tax. Try quadruple at a minimum!
Nobody resonable said its even close to 50
[Redditors when they have to read the article linked in the post](https://i.imgur.com/poOF4iD.jpg)
Honestly after watching the UCL final I gotta say Onana is incredible with his feet.
He is arguably the best ball-playing keeper in the world right now. The only thing that scares me is that he's too comfortable with the ball on his feet.
Here's a good summary of his playing style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8Zltfjli28
Yeah, that's the Onana I remember. However, this video is mainly about his time at Ajax. I don't know if he still does that at Inter.
> I don't know if he still does that at Inter. Not as much. The playing style is much different and Inter are less dominant than Ajax is in possession. I doubt he'd be this crazy for us if he comes. I mean Roy Keane did something similar, if not worse, and he's one of our most beloved and most professional players of all time.
Maybe the saving grace is he did not mutiny against ETH at Ajax. Or did he?
I can’t imagine what some of the TV pundits would say post match if Onana did this sort of thing in the PL and conceded from it. They’d have a full on meltdown.
He also does this newfangled thing of coming off his line at corners and shit. It's wild! Like jumps up in the air for the ball and catches it with his hands. Craziest shit I ever saw.
That’s great to see but fuck me my anxiety levels will be through the roof whenever he’s out of the box that high up the pitch. As such, I’m all in.
Going from a goalie who does not come out for crosses to one who makes crosses will be too much of a culture shock for me.
> The only thing that scares me is that he's too comfortable with the ball on his feet. What a wonderful problem to have.
It's not bad, but it can lead to unnecessary mistakes
The occasional unnecessary mistake is better than the unavoidable mistakes we have now
I won't argue about that, that would be much better indeed
Not really, the best midfielders in the world lose the ball regularly, if a keeper loses it more often than not it'd be goal. I don't want Barthez 2.0.
> too comfortable Too real 💀 Bro is like Ederson on steroids
Barthez used to be like that. Lived dangerously when it came to taking on Strikers on occasion.
I was honestly in awe at his ball playing ability during the final. Made me realize a GK this summer is a must.
Di Marzio reported this yesterday aswell.
£50m = £80m when United are interested.
Every players United are interested in, will automatically go to 80-100 millions regardless of their previous values. But Bayern and Dortmund can buy them for $20-30 millions. Legacy of Woodward and Glazers scums

I can't hear this guy get mentioned without "what's my name?" popping into my head.
I was in a shop earlier and Lady Gaga 'Alejandro' came on. I'll forever feel that we missed a trick with that song.
Can still sing it
I just love how confident he is with his feet. DDG gives me a heart attack every time he touches the ball with his feet 😂
If you actually think about it, I think this mad lad will also give us a heart attack when he’s driving into midfield with the ball lol We are not used to that, it will take some getting used to, fun to watch as well
Fabian Barthez memories brought back to OT lol
My biggest worry too...especially with pace od the EPL,I see us conceding some from-own-half bangers
Im not worried too much, I mean we’ve seen Ederson make some mistakes as well (the Scotty goal JUST before the pandemic at OT comes to mind) but I know it comes with thw territory. Jacob Steinberg crucially said 2 days ago he prefers United over Chelsea, I think that was Chelsea's cue to withdraw from talks
Is he accurate?
is everyone allergic to Diogo Costa or something?
Probably the price, Porto usually drive a very hard bargain and he has a big release clause, people seem to think they have financial issues though and need to sell players so who knows.
Do they? Benfica are the Portuguese club that I'd associate that with. Dalot and Telles seemed relatively simple deals for us.
Yes, we paid Dalot's buyout clause and Telles was easy and cheap because he was in the last year of his contract.
Porto are ridiculously easy to negotiate with. Their board is corrupt as fuck and doesn't give a shit how much the player goes for, as long as they get a big share. Nearly all their sales go for a value below what's expected
Let’s go! He’s the GK we need for a realistic price.
£40m is honestly a steal. Inter is having financial issues so we might even be able to get him for £35. No brainer for me.
henderson sale + both his and ddg's wages off the books = onana fee. its a tap in which ofcourse means its not gonna happen. cant wait for jassim to fuck murtough arnold judge fletch and that new guy all off. useless the lot of em.

Now we need to see how much he and ETH got along after walking out on Ajax.
We wouldn't be pursuing him if ETH has bad blood against him, you'd think that would be obvious?
Maybe they’re buying him without ETH’s knowledge and will go “surprise!!”
Don't give people on here ideas
They got along well, issues were with the fans and board mostly, because he left on a free after they stuck by him during the drugs ban and the fans felt hard done by. I mean let's be honest we wouldn't even be entertaining talks if him and Erik didn't get on in the first place, that would get shut down quick.

ETH is a rational person. football is business. things happen and people walk out
Well, I assume if we do sign him, it must be decent enough, as he's not exactly a glamour signing that the higher ups are going to overule ETH on.

Just like Charles Leclerc, we are not getting anything out of it
Man was playing like prime Xavi in the CL final
I'm starting to think all these reporters saying 100m don't actually know what's going on but need the clicks
Is he any good at shot stopping though?
In pole position to grossly overpay
I wonder why Chelsea pulled out? There is a easy pathway to doing this deal with Chelsea wanting Onana and Inter wanting Lukaku. Interesting nonetheless...

Everyone keeps going on and on about Costa, we should be going after Maignan, he's gonna be the next big thing
Costa , Maignan and Onana are all great options
Apparently Inter want 60million for Onana.
And then we fck around for 2 months only to pay 40m for pickford on deadline day #MurtoughMadness
Anyone got a YouTube highlights reel I can make a snap judgement on?
I think Erik is more than happy to spend as little as 10m on a keeper who suits his game. All round may not be that good but still contribute more to our game than David did.

Onana is cheaper and arguably better, doesn't that count for something?
PLEASE DO NOT SCREW THIS. ONANANA!
Don’t get the whole Onana link, didn’t he and Ten Hag fall out?
Are Inter Milan really going to let him go? He's the only goalkeeper they have. I thought he was intended to be a long term replacement for Handanovic.
The fk is a pole position? We strip dancing to seduce the club to sell?
Pole position means 1st place. Its a phrase commonly used in motorsports etc..
Is this a serious question? Have you never heard of pole position before?
No i haven't, but i had intuition of what it could mean. My comment was an attempt at making a dumb funny statement on it to make people laugh. Sadly it failed lol
I'm not sure you know what intuition means either bud
Intuition works here, like an idea being intuitive.
It didn't, I laughed and quite long as well. Thank you.
