Jesus christ, 10 years?? I remember being so excited when we signed him.

zunguzz

He has had a roller-coaster of a career here. Glad to see he has eventually lived upto the hype.

HowyaLove0161

Can you imagine if he'd never have broken his leg.

LeafHubble

The Shaw-Depay partnership was looking very exciting. That effectively ruined Depay’s United career, he was never the same after that.

garynevilleisared

Funny because I doubted Rashford as a LW at first but once Shaw took the starting spot back from Young their partnership has been incredible. Shaw just seems to understand how to get the best out of his wingers.

midnight_ranter

That's because he makes the best overlapping runs. He always knows when to stay behind the ball, when to run forward and when to release it to the winger. Truly underrated skill IMO

windfishw4ker

When I see Shaw play recently it's exciting. Him coming in from deep and overlapping into the final third is so fun to watch. It's that kind of attacking style that I really missed from united for so long.

MattARC

I’ve been saying this for years! Shaw-Depay had something magical going on until Shaw broke his leg. Memphis struggled after this because he didn’t have a LB who understood how to do attacking interplay with him

lyingcats

Still baffles me that Hector Moreno wasn't even booked for that

rtgh

He got man of the match

meep_meep_mope

Seems to be a pattern with the injuries we got this season as well. Several injuries from tackles that weren't even called as a foul.

schumamol

Wasn't even called as a foul

footylite

I still remember watching that game on my laptop during class in college, I believe it was a Europa League match? I remember being absolutely livid lol

VL37

Yes it was against PSV. Fuck Hector Moreno.

footylite

Ahh yea that was the night Luke Shaw was introduced to concacaf ball

Anderherrera99

Same in high school. My first year of supporting and even I was livid

TheJoshider10

This gets said all the time but there's no guarantee he'd be a better player. The injury forced Shaw to focus on the mental aspect of his game which can be argued to make him a stronger, more resilient and versatile player. He's clearly not lost any stamina or much pace from the injury either so there's no point dwelling on the what ifs when he's been living up to his potential anyway. In my opinion it's a discredit to his current ability and how well he came back from that injury.

VL37

I feel like he was a lot faster before the leg break. I might be misremembering.

HowyaLove0161

He was rapid

VL37

It's great to see how much he's developed over the last 4 years. He became a different player in Ole's first season and onwards.

MattARC

No you’re absolutely right, he was faster pre-leg break, but he’s a lot stronger now. Traded some speed for muscle to better match the physicality of the league, as many players do after they break into the first team.

mindpainters

Not sure if his top speed is any different but his acceleration was insane before the leg break. He could get to top speed in just a few strides.

ProfessorBeer

Yeah his mental strength honestly is unmatched, but is easy to take for granted.

Whispperr

Unironically he'd have been the best LB in the world. Glad that he still managed to be amazing for us

ProfessorBeer

In terms of form he’s in the conversation for the best right now.

CounterAttackFC

Crazy to think he was my first player-named jersey. I was so excited that he joined because I had just really gotten into football beyond just walking by while my dad watched United and I was amazed that he was the same age as me going into the first team. It's been a fun rollecoaster ~~couple of years~~ decade

TheJoshider10

Your comment reminded me of that fan who got Shaw 3 on his kit and then when the actual squad numbers came out Shaw offered to cover the cost of the mistake and get the guy a signed shirt.

RABB_11

My wife was pregnant with my eldest when we signed him so I'm off to have an existential crisis now. Even floated the idea of naming him Luke but no joy.

Plugpin

I was on holiday in Mexico, was pumped for him joining.... feels like only last year. Fuck I'm old

kyldare

I was at his debut for the club, on the US tour that summer after his transfer. He absolutely DESTROYED that left flank (granted against MLS in an exhibition). Rarely have I been more excited for a player on his debut.

GullyBose

We were amazing that pre season. Beat Real Madrid, Liverpool and Inter and then lost to Swansea at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season lmao.

RutzPacific

Lad, that was 2014. Let than sink in.

durandpanda

2014

gldmartin

Yo I got his first jersey when we still had nike.

dopeveign

Still won't be 30 for another 2 years

FinnaEatThisAss

I’ve kinda grown up with Shaw. Feels almost like a cousin or something.

Dr_Marcus_Brody1

It’s all about the cousins we make along the way

nonumbers90

Easy there Mr Alabama

attrox_

Roll Tide

[deleted]

Im 32, he was pretty much the first buy that was younger than I at the time that was expected to be a starter the moment he was bought.

VL37

Same here. I started supporting at 18 back in 2014. How time flies.

keving691

Where did the time go?

weekndalex

out the window

Subtle_Maniac

Tryin' to hold on, they didn't even know

no5_tomato

Wasted it all being coached by Mouri-n-h-o

BlendedPeppers

They kept everything onside and even though they tried, it all fell apart

Plugpin

What it meant to me will eventually be a memory

RABB_11

Of the time WE SIGNED. LUKE. SHAW. AND SCHWEINSTEIGEEEEEEEEEERRRR

Rossrox

BUT IN THE END, WE'VE STILL GOT THE GLAZE-ERS

mdove11

“Haven't done half the things we want to Oh well, we'll catch up some other time”

possibly_facetious

Don't know, but you can guarantee the glazers took a share of it

Snow3210

Unreal doesn't feel like it!

Hm2801

One of my favourite redemption arcs in football, still fuck Hector Moreno though.

the-won

And Mourinho

RedDevWar

Unpopular opinion but I think Shaw stepped up after Mou provoked him. He's the only one who took it on the chin and got better.

MattARC

Unironically, Mou was somewhat justified for his intent to criticize as Shaw was playing poorly – it’s just the way he chose to criticize Shaw (the whole “his body my brain” thing) that was distasteful. It would’ve worked for the types of “warrior” players Mou is used to like Zlatan or his Chelsea Core (Drogba/Lampard/Terry), but not so much for the newer generation.

mindpainters

Completely agree. It was valid criticism at the time but he just worded it horrendously

the-won

Shaw has had bad spells under all our managers but no one hung him out to dry and treated him like an infant like Mourinho.

Book31415926

He is a prime example for the fact that we need to be patient with our young(er) players.

Bigmomma_pump

Testimonial next summer? When’s the last time a player in his prime had a testimonial here

WellYoureWrongThere

As good as Shaw is, I think we haven't even seen the best of him yet.

FinnaEatThisAss

He’s a fine wine, our Luke. I can see us having him at 33/34 in centre back.

VanWilder91

Christ, I hope not as a starter anyway

FinnaEatThisAss

Back up to Licha and Willy Kambwala. Although that’s a grand age for centre back.

Iceman23578

I think we have but I don’t say that in a bad way. He’s shown he can be the best lb in the world and was consistently one of if not the best lb in the league last season as well

mozeze

Future Captain.

KrypticAndroid

He’s already a senior player. One of the longest serving players in the team alongside DDG.

Lazystubborn

He is the 3rd longest serving player in the squad iirc after De Gea and Jones and 2nd longest registered this season.

ogicaz

I always forget that Jones still on the board

Lazystubborn

Olha só, um torcedor do Goiás avistado.

ogicaz

r/suddenlycaralho

MattSR30

He should be our vice-captain going into the new season.

Lirtano

10th?!?! been here for 3 seasons in my head

HazardCinema

I genuinely would’ve guessed like 6 seasons. I can’t believe it’s 10. I’m genuinely blown away by this stat.

mozeze

Bruno, Licha, Shaw would be my captains.

Adrasos

Swap Licha for Varane, because someone needs to sit back organising the troops while Licha is off on one of his Rambo missions.

attrox_

I don't remember Licha going so far up the pitch last season. I definitely remember Varane dribbling in the opposition penalty box and shooting.

babablack420

I think the commenter meant Licha bullying oppositions, while Varane is calmer and can lead from the back

MattARC

Ah yes, the Rio-Vidic dynamic

NationalUnrest

I’m not sure Shaw is captain material tho, doesn’t seem to talk or motivate a lot when I see him, I might be wrong if someone can confirm

KrypticAndroid

Maybe not. But he’s always very brave and honest when talking to the media. Especially after some bad losses. It’s not much but could be an indicator of how the manager/teammates see him

dhwinthro

Listen to his interviews then. His mentality is good The last interview of his I saw, he said all the right things you wanna hear. He really seems like he’s focused and motivated right now. His most recent quote is literally, “I feel like I can get better still.” Fantastic mentality to have at his age

NationalUnrest

I’m not saying he has a bad mentality? I’m just saying he doesn’t seem like a leader on the pitch

dhwinthro

The point is that having a good mentality sets a good example for others- which is something you want a captain to do

NationalUnrest

I don’t think you necessarily need to be captain to do that, Juan Mata and Matic come to mind as role models for youngsters. Imo the captain attributes are to get the team motivated and to wake people up when something goes wrong, and I think you need to be a bit loud to do that

Maya06102017

He has a great composure when it gets heated. You always see him calming the other players or separating them. I like his quiet strength, lot of character as well. I think he really took another dimension this season with ETH arrival. I would see him behind Bruno for the armband

HazardCinema

Leaders don’t always need to be the most vocal.

rateofreturn

Our best technical player bar none. I got laughed at when I said that Shaw is so press resistant, more than Pogba when he was here. But look at him now. Even when City was pressing him 2v1 he effortlessly avoided the traffic and able to played forward passes to our midfield.

MyUndiesAreRed

He is and always was! When The team went total shit with no confidence he also looked shaky but he is out best press ressistant player probably

dektorres

Pogba, for all his undeniable qualities, was awful under an organised press. Great technique and caught the eye with some turns but too often sat on the ball too long or delayed while he was looking for a killer pass.

Lazystubborn

Then they started to become the Scousers' B team.

ByrsaOxhide

I still remember his horrendous injury against PSV. Coming back as strong as he is now is the definition of a professional.

ritwikjs

Uptil the start of last season I still had doubts that lingered. The way he came back makes me certain that if not Bruno, he should get the armband

shockfella

He’s been an excellent player

Slimy__

I love Luke

MinotauroTBC

It’s like a new signing

Philred87

Really hope he has another good season. 2 consistent seasons with no injuries pleaseee

MemeL_rd

A legend in my eyes

Tomero

Hot take: Mourinho made him the player he is. And im glad.

iamthatperson2255

That record fee for teenager at that time was became a bargain after 10 years.

DSFTR

Love the Shaw!

zeus-fox

That’s unbelievable!

PreetSG

A class act. Someone I am glad I backed all the way. I knew he could attack and defend; but never knew he could invert as well. He had has got to go to the next phase now. Follow the steps of Maldini, Thuram, Ramos and Alaba; and transition to CB. He is very good at it and will be absolute class. Could be our answer to long-term Varane replacement.
