To a point, the somersault is very helpful (due to the massive amount of i-frames it generates) on the first ball and chain boss, and essential on the repeat in the boss rush and the 1st form of the final boss.
Otherwise you just have to abuse damage frames and that’s not ideal.
I've been meaning to test this very idea myself lately. Can I beat Little Me? Surely I can only have gotten better at games all these years later.... right?
Right????
I don't think that this one is very underrated. It has been rated consistently high since it was released.
Perhaps the definition of "underrated" is rather inconsistent within the community
Ninja Gaiden 3 went futuristic. Crystalis is post-apocalyptic. Solar Jetman, Gradius, Life Force seem futuristic. Also Robocop, Smash TV and Total Recall
The Guardian Legend
Damn. I was going to say Kirby, but the graphics smoke Kirby.
How is Kirby futuristic?
Once the world destroys itself and earth enters a new lifecycle, all things will evolve to a Kirby like form...
I read serious articles about Peppa Pig world being a post-apocalyptic world, but Pop-Star may be one too.
I was literally about to say this. Inticreates needs to make a Blaster Master Zero-style remake so much
Journey of Silius
Great theme and music but impossibly hard to beat.
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
MetalStorm
My vote as well. Killer game, tight controls, Great soundtrack.
and only 6 levels, but hard as fuck. its a great example of ‘NES hard’
Was coming here to say this
Power Blade 1 and 2, Low G Man.
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Vice: Project Doom
Street Fighter 2010!
Yep, one of the only NES games in which invincibility frames can not only be manipulated by the player, but the game very much expects you to.
I'm sorry, what? I think I only beat the first level once. Is that why I completely suck at the game?

Games have just gotten easier and we all think we are in God mode
Well until FromSoft get their hands on you.
Total Recall Basewars
Base Wars seconded!
Total Recall is a great movie but terrible game lol
SCAT
Power Blade deserves a mention. If you've yet to give it a shot, I can't recommend it enough.
Shatter hand
Absolutely!
The Guardian Legend
Blaster Master

Journey to Silius and Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Solar Jetman
Shatterhand
SHATTER HAND!
Came in to up vote all the Kabuki Quantum Fighter responses and say Kabuki Quantum Fighter. Surprisingly became one of favorite NES games.

Just wanna say people are suggesting some absolute BANGERS in these comments 👏
Street Fighter 2010. Fun game, great music, and I love the art.
Bionic Commando, all the Mega Man games
Ah yes, Mega Man, that underrated series.
It sucks when you never learned to read :( I actually just downvoted my fuckin self for the first time ever
3D World Runner. It's a Space Harrier clone.
Rad Gravity
Galaxy 5000
Air Fortress. Simple and repetitive but I really liked it was I was little. Still do.
DinoWarz
Overlord
Xenyz by Hudson. Not so much the outdoor stages but there are very futuristic fortresses you explore.
