You are way safer out at sea than in port during a hurricane

jbaugues

Always amazes me that there is a hurricane around but ship is couple hundred miles away and it's 70 and sunny.

SweatyFLMan1130

Or you're like me on my first cruise on Allure trying to make the best of a bad situation by skirting the storm to manage to get to port and still facing tropical storm force gales and seas high enough to soak you up on the deck 5 running track. You'd think you wouldn't feel that much on the Allure, which is true for a lot of the midship, except for the fact we were in a forward-facing cabin as far forward as you could get and feeling *every* shift of the bow šŸ¤¢

maleheo

Please take care of her, we'll be on Allure in three months.

DifficultParsley3132

I LOVE ALLURE

sexytarry2

Very alluring indeed.

otfitt

Oh no! Did you miss your ports or did the ship change direction?

SweatyFLMan1130

So we were actually the only ship in the east Caribbean I think that didn't miss a port of call. The port at St. Thomas didn't have the cruise port open when we arrived cause of the storm but at the time Oasis class had to dock at the commercial side cause of their size. So the Allure hooked around the north of the storm instead of through its typical route that would cut through the more southerly part of the Bahamas. Would've gone right into the storm had we done that. But we were still close enough for 40-50 mph gusts and the seas were super high. Overall it was still a good time but I felt bad the other ships didn't manage to get to their ports of call.

otfitt

Was this the cruise that was supposed to go to Mexico and Honduras?

SweatyFLMan1130

Nah St. Thomas - Maarten - CocoCay. It was July 2013, can't remember the storm. But Allure did really well handling the rough weather.

otfitt

Ohh ok I thought you meant right now

WorkHardFromHome

I'll be on the Allure in November... has the internet gotten any better? Heard they were upgrading the Voom... which was horrific on another cruise this past June.

SweatyFLMan1130

Oh not sure. I failed to mention in my comments this was years back. Before Voom, even šŸ˜†

Hairy_Ad7432

Ohhh, was that back when they were still paddle boats?

SweatyFLMan1130

šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

KaXiaM

Or you are sea sick like most passengers and crew were on Grandeur this week. I donā€™t get sea sick, but it was truly sad too watch. The Gulf was really unsettled from Ian.

Unclassified1

Itā€™s going to be a fun time for those with drink packages!

Sonakstyle

Do they get extended?

Mottaman

if you're on a ship that has to extend the trip... everything gets extended. Your extra days in the room are free, your packages are free, I'm not sure about automatic gratuities though

DifficultParsley3132

Yep. We had the same happen to us. Had an absolute blast. They flew in extra entertainment too lol

Mottaman

my father was involved in a storm a couple years back... they just repeated 2 of the ports the ship had already gone to since it had no where else to go for like 5 days

DifficultParsley3132

Oh we went to new ports too ...

alinroc

I just saw that the Navy is pulling all ships in Jacksonville out of port in preparation for the storm. Depending on what happens with the storm, you may be out at sea a bit longer than Saturday. Getting back home once you do get into port will be another adventure.

Mottaman

> Depending on what happens with the storm, you may be out at sea a bit longer than Saturday. By Saturday the storm will be hundreds of miles north of Canaveral

jelloshotlady

Have you ever seen areas after a hurricane? The port might be damaged or there may be debris everywhere.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Mottaman

Not sure what map you're looking at... but looking at maps of this storm, by Saturday the Eye will be in South Carolina. By Friday morning it's going to be off the coast of Jacksonville. The worst of it will be north of Canaveral by midnight Thursday night. If you drove.... your car might be F'd though

dustinmypants

Yep, on the Mariner right now too. Glad we got the drink package :)

leptoon

I didn't, I paid $40 for drinks today. But I also canceled two days at Disney World so the math works well enough haha

spottedrabbitz

You are def still ahead!!

bciocco

Definitely ahead. The drink package is 60-80 per person per day and all people in the cabin need to get it.

Mottaman

I think you can drink most of the booze on the ship and still come out ahead =p

G0PACKGO

Drink package is gonna pay for itself

GdSmth

Congratulations!

leptoon

Haha thank you! I'm out on deck 11 being inebriated as fuck with a bottle of water before I go back to the room LOL

[deleted]

Woo Hooo extra cruise days. *Hi,* *Work,* *Sorry I can not make it in due to the Hurricane. See you later suckers.*

HARDCOR3_HERO

How much extra food and water do they keep on the cruise ship for events like these? On the last of my last cruise they where out of certain food alreadyā€¦.

Unclassified1

From documentaries Iā€™ve seen it seems a week or so extra is standard (based on a normal 7night sailing.). Naturally some fresh ingredients would be the first to be noticed as missing. All breads are baked fresh on board so thatā€™s easy to keep going. Iā€™m sure during hurricane season this is planned and expected by all departments, including entertainment- the cruise director already posted on Facebook he has full lineups planned for all extra sea days they might have.

Chet_Bartleby_Manley

Thereā€™s always lembas bread. Super nutritious and stays good for months.

Darth_Boognish

One small bite will fill the stomach of a grown man.

leptoon

I saw them loading large amounts of something at our last port of call today, Labadee. Couldn't tell what it was, but they loaded maybe three semi trailers worth of wrapped pallets.

Mottaman

That's the leftovers from the Labadee BBQ... if you were awake when they docked and were watching, you would have seen them unloading all of that. The food at Labadee and Cococay from from the ship, it's not stocked there

Glampire1107

I love Labadee šŸ„° enjoy those extra ship days!

Tolkmit

I was on Liberty of the Seas when Harvey hit Galveston. 7 day cruise that was supposed to return to Galveston on Sunday, instead diverted to Miami and couldn't get there until Tuesday. There was no noticeable change in the food options at MDR or Windjammer; no shortage of alcohol. So I'd say at least 2 extra days of provisions.

coupon_user

What happens to the people who drove in to Galveston? How did they get back to their cars? Did the cruise line pay yo fly them back?

Tolkmit

People were actually given a choice. Those who wanted to disembark in Miami were allowed to do so; but those who wanted to stay on Liberty and disembark in Galveston a few days later once she was able to dock there again could do so too.

SnoootBoooper

They must be desalinating for a ship that large so as long as everything is up and running (and they have enough fuel) water wonā€™t be an issue.

beershoes767

Cruise ships make their own water so itā€™s basically unlimited. Bottled water is a different story but ship water is fine to drink.

Dogmama1230

Iā€™m supposed to be leaving from PC on the Independence on Friday. I wish they would just tell us one way or another ASAP instead of waiting until as late as possible. I understand they donā€™t wanna lose money, but Disney already announced they canceled the Wish on Friday and they wonā€™t be back in dock until at least Saturday. Wish Royal gave us the same respect.

mikey4goalie

Disney and Carnival have both cancelled their weekend sailings. RCā€™s website says they will make the call officially today by 8:00. Quite the contrast if you go to Carnivalā€™s site and they have a very clear response for each vessel impacted.

_TheMinister_

Iā€™m on Independence right now and they just announced we will not be porting on friday, but probably Saturday morning. Safe to say youā€™ll not be boarding friday. Sorry!

proudgryffinclaw

Anyone heard about port in Miami? I am currently on Symphony of the seas, we are supposed to get to Miami on Saturday.

tw0_cent

We should be fine... Storm is hitting mid West coast of Florida... No surge or anything crazy for Miami... I'm on symphony now also... Beautiful day in St Thomas today we got really lucky this week on symphony

cherylcor1

Miami is good. We just had a bit of wind and lots of rain, but compared to what's happening upstate, we are blessed.

proudgryffinclaw

Good!!! We are in Miami through Monday so thatā€™s good hear. Now to figure out a ride from the airport to our hotel if things get bad and we canā€™t get Uber lol. I am a Midwest girl, is this pretty normal for you guys?

cherylcor1

You won't have a problem getting an Uber. They're everywhere in Miami.

DifficultParsley3132

I got 3 free extra days when hurricane Dorian hit. I was ecstatic lol they flew in extra entertainment and food. Was the time of our life!!! Stay safe!!!

Saul_Teaload

Next sailing after the ship arrives goes on Monday then I guess. Doubt they're gonna run a one or two nighter between the two.

SpaceCommuter

I just realized this is probably why the soda cups don't expire until a week after your cruise ends. It's probably in case they keep you on board longer for storms. Wow.

Illustrious-Log2329

Free cruise days woot woot!

T-Rex_timeout

This is why you alway park as high up but not top level of the parking garage. Especially in New Orleans.

Psychoticangel5

How does this work for ppl who gave flights? Does Royal cover the cost of passengers having to book new flights or do they expect that the travel insurance guests are supposed to have covers it?

CalmCartographer4

Get travel insurance in hurricane season.

dmznet

Get travel insurance even not during hurricane season.

CalmCartographer4

Yes. Or accept the risk and be ā€œself insuredā€. It helps to know the policies of all of the carriers for the difference parts of the trip.

Phlydude

Orlando airport is going to be closed. You may want to contact your airline for flight changes which are generally complimentary for a certain time before and after a storm like this

Psychoticangel5

I always buy travel insurance so Iā€™m good I was just curious the logisticsā€”we never travel during hurricane season so lol

leptoon

I was scheduled to fly home Sunday after spending a couple days in Orlando. From the Southwest website, "You may change your travel date/time at no additional cost. Circumstances beyond our control (weather, etc.) are creating disruptions to our scheduled service and a flight(s) on which you are currently booked may be adversely affected. To minimize your inconvenience, we are offering the one time opportunity to change your flight date(s) and/or time(s) at no additional cost in accordance with our established reaccommodation practices."

bengenj

Once you get an idea of when youā€™re going to be arriving in port, get a hold of Southwest. They have good customer service and should be able to help you out with getting home.

notscb

Most flights will be cancelled or delayed out of Orlando (and other area airports) which would allow passengers to refund or change for free.

Friendly_University7

There arenā€™t going to be flights if they canā€™t return to port. Also, this is why you pay the $20 extra for travel insurance.

mamatttn

Please share the link for $20 travel insurance.

leptoon

I priced travel insurance at $300-600 for my 5 day cruise. Please share the link to this $20 travel insurance plan you speak of, I would be very interested.

dmznet

You can get a year's worth of travel insurance for that! Price is based upon coverage, state you live in and your age. This is my third year with Allianz.

cherylcor1

Yeah, ours was about $350 per person. What does this $20 insurance cover? Your Uber to the airport?

Friendly_University7

You got screwed. I just got back from my cruise last week and travel insurance for my round trip was $20 per passenger. Where are you going that you were priced that absurd amount. I paid $50 for travel insurance through Royal. $70 per person for travel insurance covering my flight and cruise out of Port Canaveral.

leptoon

Royal Caribbean doesn't sell travel insurance. Please provide links or your comment is just a waste of time lol

Friendly_University7

[https://ibb.co/g7pwNmQ](https://ibb.co/g7pwNmQ) From my cruise receipt last week. You don't know what you're talking about, please apologize

leptoon

RCCI's travel protection plan is not the same thing as travel insurance. That plan isn't even remotely the same thing as travel insurance, it's designed to protect the cruise line. So you actually don't have insurance, you have a "protection plan". I'd explain more but I'm on a cruise and it's not my job to educate you lol

Friendly_University7

Itā€™s ok, anyone paying attention knows youā€™re clueless. Enjoy entering the buffet without washing you hands!

leptoon

Try using proper grammar when you display your ignorance. Go do even the smallest amount of research and you'll discover the difference between their "protection plan" and actual travel insurance. Use your brain.

bciocco

That's a good price. I shop hard and usually pay 45-100 for two people. For the 45, it's mostly medical coverage. I zero out the price. No refunds, but the rest of the policy is in place. I don't want to deal with the price of a helicopter off the ship if one of us need serious medical care. For our next trip, 8 days to Bermuda, it is $46.12 from Genrali Global Alliance through Travel Insurance .com Services Provided: 24-Hour Emergency Assistance Service Identity Theft Resolution Service Concierge Services Telemedicine Service No Out of Pocket Medical Service Insurance Coverages Provided Per person Per Plan Travel Delay ($150 per person daily limit applies) $1,000.00 $2,000.00 Missed Connection $500.00 $1,000.00 Baggage Coverage $1,000.00 $2,000.00 Baggage Delay $200.00 $400.00 Medical and Dental Coverage $50,000.00 $100,000.00 Emergency Assistance and Transportation ($10,000 limit applies for Companion Hospitality Expenses) $250,000.00 $500,000.00 Accidental Death and Dismemberment - Air Flight Accident $50,000.00 $100,000.00

wtaf8520

That is not their problem unless you booked flights and insurance through Royal

svezia

They might give you a raft to disembark on Saturday if you are lucky

CarbonKLR

So how much does it affect the itinerary?

GdSmth

You got your 2 free extra days! I would love to experience something like this, except I have to fly back home and would be stressed out working on my flight change. I wish I live in Florida!

leptoon

It's nice to have two free days, not so nice that millions of people were negatively affected by the very reason I got the free days. But I'll take it.

mvehoeft21

OP - do you know what time you guys are getting back?? Today or tomorrow? We want to watch the ships come in!

leptoon

We're getting back into port around 6 AM, but the port will be open for large ships starting at midnight.
