Oh man. You just reminding me of this totally awesome hiking stick I used to have! I called it my Gandalf staff. I ended up leaving it when I left my ex š
We have a chain here that serves them in a giant deep to go bowl. I can't even look att ehm they make me so mad.
Do NOT get me started in the layered salads in Mason jars. Please tell me that is not a thing anymore.
I would die on this hill with you. I like getting salads to go so I can take them home and dump them in my extra large bowl for thorough mixing. I hate trying to eat a salad off a shallow plate and just getting lettuce all over the place because I canāt mix properly.
I ordered my bf a bowl that matched a collection his mom had. When it arrived it was laughably larger than what we were trying to get. It's now my salad bowl.
I am a food separatist and I want my salad in a bowl, all by itself.
I absolutely do not want dressing touching my mac & cheese, fancy steak, pastaā¦whatever.
There's a restaurant near me with a delicious seared ahi salad. When they first opened, it was served in an appropriately large bowl. Big enough to mix if you wanted, but not so huge that it looked like they were screwing you.
They did some minor aesthetic revamping and decided it was logical to serve it on a (TINY) slate platter instead. Literally, the components *baaaarely* fit on it. I shared my salad with the table that night.
I certainly can't have been the only person to complain, but it's still served on the platter. It honestly put me off ordering the salad entirely, even though I'm sure I could just ask for it in a bowl.
I think you should ask for the bowl every single time. And I think you should have all your friends order a salad and a bowl as well.
I *would* say to just make a huge mess on purpose, but unless the owners are also serving staff that 1. Wouldnāt work and 2. Would just piss off the servers.
You know, that is a great idea to ask for a bowl. Itās likely that aesthetically it seems better when the food overflows the plate rather than being served in something that looks like itās underfilled, but whoās to say you canāt ask for another thing to put it in? I love this idea.
I use a small-ish mixing bowl (small for a mixing bowl. It's like the size of the bowl salad places will use to mix your salad together before putting it in a container for you.
Absolutely. I like to put them in a Tupperware-style bowl with the lid on, and then give them a good shake. Mixes everything together, including any dressing. A co-worker of mine was commented that this method was the ātrue definition of a tossed saladā. š
My biggest pet peeve. Common sense and just observing how most people eat salads would have made over-sized bowls automatic. Restaurants use small bowls to create he illusion that customers are getting more food.
The 9.5 inch bowl is my all purpose salad and messy entree bowl when I eat alone.

I've tried that but it's not good for me. Still spill everywhere when mixing. Chopsticks with microwave popcorn is not optional tho, it's a must for me.
U are fancy. No matter what šš
I think we all should wear our favorite fancy clothes to go shopping or some other trivial tasks!
And whatever your idea of fancy and spruced up is!
Prom dress or tux? Sure!
Vampire Halloween costume? Yuppers!
Dirt goblin chic? Yes!
I always eat salads out of a ( usually very large) mixing bowl. Itās very tough to mix it on a plate and eat it like other food. It also cracks me up when I go to restaurants and they serve salads in minuscule quantities. It doesnāt quantify as a salad imo.
Thank you! Iāve been saying this forever. When I make a salad at home, I put it in a gigantic stainless steel bowl. That way I can mix it up really well and not spill it all over the place. Itās not fun trying to do that at a restaurant in a small bowl/plate! I always ask for an extra plate and split the salad in half.
How is the stuff letās added last on top going to get on the rest of the salad. if you canāt mix it up? You need the space to mix it up. I donāt want all the Parmesan on the top. I want even distribution.
I think the only time a small plate is fine if itās in a restaurant and theyāve already dressed and mixed it for you. In fact I prefer the mixing be done for me.
I hate that Sweetgreen stopped mixing it for you in the big metal bowl. I know you can have them mix it for you in the bowl you eat it from, but that bowl is not big enough and you end up with the dressing and ingredients not distributed properly that way.
You think that's bad, go to western new york, they put entire cheeseburgers on the tiniest paper plate, I shit you not the plate is the same size as the cheeseburger and you have to use 100 napkins because it fucking gets everywhere. And it's like every place you go not just one restaurant.
Yes! At this one place I ordered the buffalo salad. They gave it to me in a tiny bowl and piled on as much as they could. I had to eat it unmixed if I didnāt want to make a big mess. š„²
Yes I use the large glass mixing bowls.
To add to it, I also use soup spoons to eat salads. So much easier to get a decent bite with it over a pesky fork.
Call me feral but when I make it at home for work lunches, I use a gallon-sized ziplock bag. Dump my ingredients, and shake. If Iām feeling really lazy, Iāll even eat out of the bag with the sides folded down
100%!!!! I always ask for them to please put my salad and in large bowl so it doesnāt fall out while Iām trying to eat it. I donāt care if they think Iām high maintenanceā¦what I am is smart.
Or the restaurant serves salad that completely fills the bowl. Can't stir in the dressing or cut the huge pieces of lettuce, which is another peeve of mine.
My husband and mom always laugh at me. I rarely eat salad out of anything other than a (sometimes hilariously large) mixing bowl.
I use glass Pyrex mixing bowls!
Same. I had one today, actually. It's the only way.
then you can put the lid on and have a salad shaker!
This is exactly what I use š A forest Fancies 403 to be really exact!
Try their giant measuring cup! It's the handle for me
I have two large white bowls specifically for personal salads.
This. I have 2 large white porcelain bowls that I only use for my sexy salads too!
I often make variations of Buddha Bowls, we call them Swole Bowls in those specifically oversized white porcelain bowls
LOL! I use large, white Corelle serving bowls for my salads. My BIL said it was the best way to have a salad.
Those bowls are so awesome. Finally, a satisfying amount of soup as well!
Yes! My family's popcorn bowl doubles as my salad bowl.
Yes!
Same! Those massive aluminum ones
Yes!
This is how I bring my lunch salad most days. A huge stainless steel mixing bowl. I had to get a bigger lunch bag to fit it š
As someone that fasts intermittently, I feel you.
I wasnāt aware there was another way to eat salad.
I JUST DID THIS FOR LUNCH TODAY.
Yes! Same here
Same. We'll I use like an oversized serving bowl but basically the same lol.
I will climb right up on that hill and die with you.
Thereās going to be a lot of us.
Iām grabbing my shoes and coming up.
I'm getting my hiking stick and following swiftly behind.
Oh man. You just reminding me of this totally awesome hiking stick I used to have! I called it my Gandalf staff. I ended up leaving it when I left my ex š
I just found this subreddit, count me in
I use a huge Tupperware-type square container from the dollar store for mine so I can shake it and then just eat directly from it.
The Diy McSalad shaker!
#bringbacktheMcSaladshaker
I use serving bowls or larger pasta bowls for my salad. I HATE eating it from a cramped plate or bowl!!!
Same here. I always end up flinging salad everywhere when I try to mix it if the bowl is too small.
My toxic trait is always thinking the bowl Iām using will be big enough.
Can't agree more!
No seriously though. My biggest pet peeve at restaurants is them serving their salads in a bowl packed to the brim
Or even worse, a small plate. How am I supposed to mix and cut without getting it everywhere?
True thats even worse!
Especially if the dressing is offered on the side. So I guess I just glop it all on top or spill my salad everywhere trying to mix it?
I just dip my fork in the dressing then fork up the salad when it's served this way. Much easier and no mess.
We have a chain here that serves them in a giant deep to go bowl. I can't even look att ehm they make me so mad. Do NOT get me started in the layered salads in Mason jars. Please tell me that is not a thing anymore.
Omg I forgot about jar salads š those are truly the worst option I think
[This -](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079KVVFJL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) is my salad bowl. It is enormous and I love it.
Love thisš
How cute.
I would die on this hill with you. I like getting salads to go so I can take them home and dump them in my extra large bowl for thorough mixing. I hate trying to eat a salad off a shallow plate and just getting lettuce all over the place because I canāt mix properly.
Had a picture I wanted to add but for some reason it won't let me š¤·āāļø
I ordered my bf a bowl that matched a collection his mom had. When it arrived it was laughably larger than what we were trying to get. It's now my salad bowl.
I hate when someone serves salad on the same plate as the other food. Salads need their own dish!
I am a food separatist and I want my salad in a bowl, all by itself. I absolutely do not want dressing touching my mac & cheese, fancy steak, pastaā¦whatever.

I eat salad out of a giant bowl
And I eat giant salads out of giant bowls.
YES! The default should also to be come tossed in the dressing. You should have to ask for dressing on the side if you donāt want it tossed.
YES ! šÆ IF THE SALAD IS PROPERLY PRE-MIXED I DON'T HAVE TO STIR IT and that can be served on a smaller plate
I do love it when a restaurant does it Caesar salad style.
A co-worker of mine was commented that this method was the ātrue definition of a tossed saladā. š
I agree. Can't really toss it when it's cramped in a tight bowl.
No one mentioned the other cardinal rule. Salad bowls like with all other cold food stoneware need to be chilled before service.
I literally will jump for joy if I get an ice cold crisp salad. you could literally spit in my face and iāll still recommend it
My biggest pet peeve. Common sense and just observing how most people eat salads would have made over-sized bowls automatic. Restaurants use small bowls to create he illusion that customers are getting more food.
Iām fine with a small bowl if the salad is pre-mixed/dressed beforehand! I just donāt understand small bowl + dressing on the side.
Anybody have good bowl recommendations? I use my small cereal bowls and could use an upgrade. š
I like [these](https://www.worldmarket.com/p/white-pasta-bowl-set-of-4-341389.html), but if Iām eating a large salad Iāll just use a mixing bowl

They're the best!
Large glass bowls from ikeaĀ
The 9.5 inch bowl is my all purpose salad and messy entree bowl when I eat alone. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B071L3N8GP?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
Any bowl, but bigger
Friend told me pie plate. And now I haven't used anything else. It's big. It has a decent lip so things don't fall over.
Same!! I hate it when restaurants serve ādeconstructedā salads on a small plate.
The old restaurant I worked at would pile side salads to the very edge onto skinny plates and I hated how impractical it was.
I will die on this hill with you!! Itās one of my biggest gripes in life!
I'm just excited that I'm not the only 'Elaine' on this sub
My thoughts exactly when I've been scrolling through the comments! š©µ "Can you put it in a big bowl?"
Agree šÆ
I often run into this problem when bringing a salad for lunch--not enough room to mix the dressing in.
Absolutely šÆ
I agree!
I need a bigger bowl ... I have a really really big bowl!
I agree! There needs to be room for everything and be able to actually mix the dressing in! When Iām at home, itās always an oversized bowl.
I just started this and wonāt look back. I mostly do this now when I have guests overĀ
fuckkkkk chayyy.
I use an oversized bowl and then use a salad glove towards the end so I donāt waste so much time trying to get the last little bits
I totally agree! My bowl is at least a half gallon size and I always wish I had a bigger one but ran out of room in my cupboards.
All dishes should have a lip to prevent spillage, with enough surface area to spread things out.
Use chopsticks?! Total game changer
I've tried that but it's not good for me. Still spill everywhere when mixing. Chopsticks with microwave popcorn is not optional tho, it's a must for me.
Brilliant!!
Pasta plates. They are wider than they are deep. It will change you life. Trust me.
I have two enormous pressed glass serving bowls for my chop salads. I feel fancy eating out of them.
U are fancy. No matter what šš I think we all should wear our favorite fancy clothes to go shopping or some other trivial tasks! And whatever your idea of fancy and spruced up is! Prom dress or tux? Sure! Vampire Halloween costume? Yuppers! Dirt goblin chic? Yes!

YES
Itās like a salad only bigger
Big bowls
I agree with you 100%!!
I agree!!
You had to order āthe big saladā
...Does anyone argue particularly passionately that salads should be mixed in the smallest dish possible?

Big bowl for sure. And I like it all chopped up to eat with a soup spoon. Yup. Spoon.
You think that's bad, go to western new york, they put entire cheeseburgers on the tiniest paper plate, I shit you not the plate is the same size as the cheeseburger and you have to use 100 napkins because it fucking gets everywhere. And it's like every place you go not just one restaurant.
My fiancĆ© and I have special salad bowls that we got at Walmart last year. Pretty sure theyāre actually serving dishes, but theyāre the perfect size lol
Yes! At this one place I ordered the buffalo salad. They gave it to me in a tiny bowl and piled on as much as they could. I had to eat it unmixed if I didnāt want to make a big mess. š„²

Iām with you, homie
Yep! I use a huge Rubbermaid storage dish.
Shallow serving bowls are better than plates for many if not all foods. Salads, pasta, chili, etc
giant bowl is a must
I purchased four large soup bowls. I cannot stand to have lettuce, and cukes dropping off all over.
Totally.
It also helps to prepare it in an oversized bowl. I got a massive mixing bowl from Costco Business Center and I love it.
I make my personal dinner salads in a large mixing bowl. It's great because there's more than enough space to mix things.
Some salads donāt require mixing
AGREED! and if I buy a take out salad, I want an oversized to go box.
I use glass pie plates
You had to have the BIG saladā¦ /tippytoe
100%!!!! I always ask for them to please put my salad and in large bowl so it doesnāt fall out while Iām trying to eat it. I donāt care if they think Iām high maintenanceā¦what I am is smart.
THANK YOU
My wife likes to stuff everything into a small bowel, which I inevitably throw into a large bowl. It's our dance. Gotta pick my battles.
I concur.
#thebigsalad
Never mixed my salads before, I just dig in and dip in dressing.
Or the restaurant serves salad that completely fills the bowl. Can't stir in the dressing or cut the huge pieces of lettuce, which is another peeve of mine.
It's so relaxing
THIS!!! I second this!
Yup. At home I eat salads in a giant bowl. Sometimes just grab my big mixing bowl.
Here here! I couldn't agree more.
Thank you, I just came here to say, HELL to the yes!
