I just dip my fork in the dressing then fork up the salad when it's served this way. Much easier and no mess.

We have a chain here that serves them in a giant deep to go bowl. I can't even look att ehm they make me so mad. Do NOT get me started in the layered salads in Mason jars. Please tell me that is not a thing anymore.

I am a food separatist and I want my salad in a bowl, all by itself. I absolutely do not want dressing touching my mac & cheese, fancy steak, pasta…whatever.

There's a restaurant near me with a delicious seared ahi salad. When they first opened, it was served in an appropriately large bowl. Big enough to mix if you wanted, but not so huge that it looked like they were screwing you. They did some minor aesthetic revamping and decided it was logical to serve it on a (TINY) slate platter instead. Literally, the components *baaaarely* fit on it. I shared my salad with the table that night. I certainly can't have been the only person to complain, but it's still served on the platter. It honestly put me off ordering the salad entirely, even though I'm sure I could just ask for it in a bowl.

I think you should ask for the bowl every single time. And I think you should have all your friends order a salad and a bowl as well. I *would* say to just make a huge mess on purpose, but unless the owners are also serving staff that 1. Wouldn’t work and 2. Would just piss off the servers.

You know, that is a great idea to ask for a bowl. It’s likely that aesthetically it seems better when the food overflows the plate rather than being served in something that looks like it’s underfilled, but who’s to say you can’t ask for another thing to put it in? I love this idea.

I use a small-ish mixing bowl (small for a mixing bowl. It's like the size of the bowl salad places will use to mix your salad together before putting it in a container for you.

Absolutely. I like to put them in a Tupperware-style bowl with the lid on, and then give them a good shake. Mixes everything together, including any dressing. A co-worker of mine was commented that this method was the “true definition of a tossed salad”. 😊

My biggest pet peeve. Common sense and just observing how most people eat salads would have made over-sized bowls automatic. Restaurants use small bowls to create he illusion that customers are getting more food.

I’m fine with a small bowl if the salad is pre-mixed/dressed beforehand! I just don’t understand small bowl + dressing on the side.

I always eat salads out of a ( usually very large) mixing bowl. It’s very tough to mix it on a plate and eat it like other food. It also cracks me up when I go to restaurants and they serve salads in minuscule quantities. It doesn’t quantify as a salad imo.

Thank you! I’ve been saying this forever. When I make a salad at home, I put it in a gigantic stainless steel bowl. That way I can mix it up really well and not spill it all over the place. It’s not fun trying to do that at a restaurant in a small bowl/plate! I always ask for an extra plate and split the salad in half.

How is the stuff let’s added last on top going to get on the rest of the salad. if you can’t mix it up? You need the space to mix it up. I don’t want all the Parmesan on the top. I want even distribution.

I think the only time a small plate is fine if it’s in a restaurant and they’ve already dressed and mixed it for you. In fact I prefer the mixing be done for me. I hate that Sweetgreen stopped mixing it for you in the big metal bowl. I know you can have them mix it for you in the bowl you eat it from, but that bowl is not big enough and you end up with the dressing and ingredients not distributed properly that way.

You think that's bad, go to western new york, they put entire cheeseburgers on the tiniest paper plate, I shit you not the plate is the same size as the cheeseburger and you have to use 100 napkins because it fucking gets everywhere. And it's like every place you go not just one restaurant.

Yes I use the large glass mixing bowls. To add to it, I also use soup spoons to eat salads. So much easier to get a decent bite with it over a pesky fork.

Call me feral but when I make it at home for work lunches, I use a gallon-sized ziplock bag. Dump my ingredients, and shake. If I’m feeling really lazy, I’ll even eat out of the bag with the sides folded down
