I adopted a 8 mo old male samoyed from the shelter! So crazy to me that someone didn’t want my best friend

fordongreenman

I know right, I literally cried when we were driving her back from the shelter, how could someone leave such a perfect creature? She was immediately cuddling up to us in the car, she jumped in as soon as we opened the door..

Specialist_Banana378

Ugh take care of her!! My boy is the best

dr_m_hfuhruhurr

My Sammy ate a hole in the floor, there was a cat under the deck apparently. My husband was so peeved! It takes a lot of patience and love, and willingness to put in some work. Some people can’t handle it. Our girl has been sooooo much work.

Amidormi

Right, they can be a lot of work and cause damage. Our chewed the hell out of the wood baby gate we used to keep him in the kitchen, he chewed up the spokes on the wooden chairs, chewed the pantry cabinet door, he ripped a big hole in the berber carpet when he pulled out a strand once, he scrapes the walls when he sleeps upside down, etc. He would pull me literally off my feet at times when on walks. He's 9 now so we're far behind that behavior but gosh it was a lot at the time.

Cartoon_Dream

Embrace the wood chewing. I buy 3 dollar cedar boards from home depot. My sammy prefers the taste and smell of soft cedar to hardwood furniture. It makes the house smell great too.

dr_m_hfuhruhurr

Please please tell me when the behavior relaxed a bit

Amidormi

Hm probably around 4-5, I think? We used a walky dog bike attachment to get him long runs around the neighborhood (when it was cool/cold ofc) which helped for a year or two, then he was like "nah" at one point and refused to run more than a few blocks. But he's a BIG guy and on joint supplements now so that is likely related.

Meesels

🥺🥺🥺

-Daetrax-

Unfortunately, that is the age most dogs are abandoned. People can't handle the teenage troubles.

Specialist_Banana378

I do know that the person thought two male Samoyeds were a good idea and couldn’t contain them (ironically my boy would not leave your side ever lol) But my boy is the literal easiest but she hadn’t even house trained him by 8 mos :/ But you keep a working dog outside/in a garage i’m sure they are destructive/crazy.

Binkying_on_Bentleys

I think maybe bc they are “Velcro” dogs & want to be around their owner 24-7 & can’t be left alone for long & need constant love, attention, exercise & mental stimulation that’s unlike most other breeds… I say this with someone who just got a Samoyed for those reasons because I have a Bernese Mountian Dog…. And he is super intense & not everyone or a lot of ppl are prepared or can handle a dog like this…. I also sadly live in an area where puppy mills are huge & right now the “Berniedoodle” is soo popular at least where I live in the US… and I went from never seeing this breed in person to constantly seeing these dogs on CL or other places for free or basically nothing & a lot of them that I’ve contacted have said they were breeding dogs, but the dogs themselves were too intense & too big to control bc they didn’t look or prepare for the breed…. That’s maybe why you found this dog which is pretty rare full bred (at least in the states where I live) in a shelter!! It seems like I see breakdown “puppy blues” posts right when they get them or around 7/8 month mark so just a theory from someone that has been seeing a similar trend not with a Samoyed, but a very similar type of dog!!! So happy that you found her vs. another uneducated owner to give her the home that she deserves!! Seems like you are both lucky that you found eachother & wish you the best of luck with your new pup!! 😊

cutiebird31

Congratulations on your new baby! She is so sweet! You might find she's a bit of a handful once she settles in and get more comfortable with you. Mine is nuts! I'm glad you gave this baby a second chance. Honestly, I can't believe someone would treat a Sammy that way. They are so sweet and just want to be loved! Give her all the love she hasn't had for the last few years. Just wait till you have her fully potty trained, and you wake to a meatball panting heavily at you with longing at 5am because she needs her walkies! It's the best/worst way to wake up!

fordongreenman

She's woken us up around 6:30 AM the last couple days as she's already uncomfortable going potty in the apartment. No problem for us, we're very happy to take her and very happy she's learning so fast :) I would say she's quite relaxed now compared to how she was in the first few hours when we brought her but I'm looking forward to discovering all of her quirks, even the less pleasant ones!

cutiebird31

Lol! We can chat after 2 years of daily 6am wakeup calls. Wouldn't trade her for the world. NOT even to sleep late on weekends!! 😉 Glad she is learning so quickly and settling in so nicely!

ihvnnm

I have never needed an alarm clock, my Sammie has perfect timing, knows the time for morning, afternoon, and evening walks. If not in the same room she will awoo till I come (or back if it's an emergancy). At noon she will keep pawing me while working. And even she will stare into my soul until I give in to her willpower.. few are stronger I assume

No-Advice-6040

My girl sleeps with me in my room and will never ever wake me. Her sister, who stays with me occasionally, will wake me almost exactly 5 mins before my alarm hits. I have no idea how she does this.

Radiant_Tell8758

My lil guy is still my alarm clock. He is def a morning guy. At least now at 2.5 he graciously lets us sleep in till 7:30 on the weekends, which is a huge improvement from the 6 am wakeup calls :)

Current_Vacation_194

Samoyeds r v expensive. U lucked out!!!

JoeChio

* Weekly brushings are a must. Get a high quality grooming table with straps. * You will need an [undercoat rake](https://www.amazon.com/Poodle-Pet-Dematting-Stainless-Undercoat/dp/B07GY3K2FB/ref=sr_1_86?crid=KCZ83BZUGNL8&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.q8ZuvD1uiZLexen_72MFr6kE5pBTrBD1DvI0fTW_cPvb8-yGl9MKt1jCwpjedv9YGTWESlQE4vT1LeI55GSWbGaekzJB4D-W3YbpkorfOKaZXOsB9rCKQUi3hic_Lcz0FqXxENkS4vH2x9GRo3O0_tPNe0dPDHQ9q6ZR1w1hrWwM6QgQSGYSEL-3ZxspTYswah1rtTwuIbfnjMMqgvZo-3uj5jJR0TY_6u4JB3UPM3MuWThywyLUd93pYAqbJtHaF2y8S5H4-Xtbf-1OhoYgVCtyuoDaM-HKSvSZHUAzzNM.8MAMruKauPmwb-i80X5o37QBQXxOvB_byffgsaPIF-o&dib_tag=se&keywords=undercoat+rake+for+dogs&qid=1718810973&sprefix=undercoat+%2Caps%2C113&sr=8-86) and [top coat brush](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014PFS2VE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Avoid undercoat rakes with sharp points or edges and ALL furminators! These will "cut" or "pull" the fur instead of remove loose fur which can fuck up the dogs coat. The links are two brushes I own for our pup. * Schedule (at a minimum) 8 week recurring grooming appointments or you can do bathing/brushing yourself but I wouldn't. We have a professional grade blow drier for our pup on the off chance we need to dry him. We used to give him his baths but it's a 4+ hour affair I'd rather pay someone else to do. Most folks here will say 8 week baths are unnecessary, to that I'd say yes, but to ONLY do weekly maintenance brushes I firmly believe they are a must. Otherwise you will need to increase your weekly brushes. Having a professional go through a 4+ hour grooming session with your pup is super worth the cost IMO. Especially when he is blowing his coat. * Find a groomer who is familiar with long haired dogs. DO NOT LET THEM CUT THEIR COAT. Except their top coat. Our groomer does some very basic "shaping" of the fur around our pups feet and belly. She never cuts below the top coat because the undercoat *could* grow back incorrectly that is a determent to the dog. * Regularly check your sammy's butt fur. Sometimes if their poos are softer they can get poo stuck around their anus. It can be irritable to them. Try to remove it when it dries. With a comb it will come right off. Avoid wiping it off. It can spread around the fur. We have our groomer trim around his anus to avoid this as long as possible because our boys poos are on the softer side. * Sammy's require a TON of exercise. They are working dogs. We found a sweet spot for our boy. Two full 45 min walks daily + 20 min ball session in the backyard seems to be his preferred activity levels but he could go longer and play harder. Sadly, we are at the low end of exercise for Sammys. * Sammy's like to have a task. Again, they are working dogs. We trained our boy to carry a stick on his walks. If he doesn't have a stick he will make it his mission to find one. He has a stick pile at the house we regularly throw out. Giving a task to your Sammy whether it's something dumb like stick holding will enrich them. * Sammy's get bored easily. This is due to their high energy levels and intelligence. We freeze his dinners in a Westpaw toy so he has to lick it out everyday. This is 1hour worth of activity that helps with boredom. We also cycle lick-y mats on a regular basis with peanut butter. * Avoid walks when the temps are over 80 degrees F. Go on morning/night walks in the summer. You have to now that you are a Sammy owner. This breed is long coated. They have much more strict rules on temps than other dog breeds when it comes to excess heat. In the winter you are fine lol. * We have two [harnesses](https://www.nonstopdogwear.com/en/harnesses/). One for casual walks and one for pulling. They are sled dogs so the pulling harness comes naturally to them. We use the pulling one to either give him the task of dragging us on walks or rollerblading. Some folks use their Sammy's for cross country skiing! The regular harness is for everyday walks and curb the pulling. Both harnesses we got from Non-stop dogwear. We have the freemotion harness and the line harness. Factor in your pups fur when measuring. They are easily the most high quality harness and equipment providers for sled dogs. * Sammy's like to talk. They will bark and bark and bark and bark and howl. You can try training them but they will anyways. It's what they do. Don't try to stop it via negative reinforcement like collars. This is just who they are and it's an outlet for them. They were bred to herd reindeer it's how they did it. * Sammy's are snuggly and love their families. We had him crate trained but he was always miserable in the crate. One night we decided to just let him be and he's never been happier. He likes to sleep on the floor or on his [elevated dog bed](https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Basics-Cooling-Elevated-Metal/dp/B076VXVB2L/ref=sr_1_5?crid=3BLUD4V3QYHC1&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.AvJVPHriwXb7vo3bBvJZ8DLWDX_uld__h3VDxIHJB-LewR8BctKXAaggZ89_nKGqpYgvE5vdJiAMhTIFh_pNGvuGd-8eJ3QaqnO-1rPcnf8TBk-u9SIqzK5wEwaCvDCtXtXTp9rIAlxFdXfRfLPM--1RG5wu-d4KXHny5Q3RvzsdO7iOxG8RzTtUH_WoKp3ls_bjZPNDVnDXnauvakTavTJMhsgJNhztIJ34tyE8m-zSvdXLHBPj4iUI4Yz7xV7UrVrNO5Io1kaxLYLOU2nRaKNizdm9j_MynoU1ZOj-kLY.DjVfNpB45TtWYcKF6x-SRrB56YL11m07BwxAtNNZMMg&dib_tag=se&keywords=air+bed+dog&qid=1718813797&sprefix=air+bed+do%2Caps%2C136&sr=8-5). Avoid fluffy beds because they can get too warm. Even in the winter he prefers the coolness of the elevated bed or hardwood. * This is my number one tip for you and please heed the advice: Sammy's are a "rarer" breed in the domesticated dog world. Other dogs immediately go into "caution" mode around them due their long fur and wolf like snouts. Some dogs mistakenly take a sammy's long coat as their "hackles" being raised. This can cause dog aggression towards your sammy. Also, sammy's are friendly pack dogs. This can result in bully behavior in the dog park. Sammy's aren't very good at detecting aggression and think everyone wants to play. All these factors combined is a recipe for dog attacks. Our boy was attacked by a neighbors dog during a play session. Luckily the double layered coat and the thick neck of the sammy saved his life. We've also been attacked at the dog park. USE CAUTION AT DOG PARKS. USE CAUTION WHEN SELECTING A BOARDING PLACE. DO NOT LET YOUR SAMMY PLAY UNSUPERVISED AND PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE OTHER DOG. Samoyeds are the best breed of dog. Hands down. They do require extra care but you will be rewarded with the [most loving dog you'll ever own](https://imgur.com/a/JorPqEk)! They love their owners and their families. They are great with children and other pets/dogs. Just put in the effort!

rightascensi0n

This is an exemplary comment and should be required reading for people interested in Samoyeds

fordongreenman

Incredible comment. Thank you so much!

JoeChio

Anytime! All of us here were new to owning a winter dog at some point in our lives. If you have any questions there is a wealth of knowledge in this subreddit. My DMs are always open if you have questions.

No-Advice-6040

Don't take this the wrong way, but is this copied from somewhere? Cos if not... maybe this should be a pinned comment for the sub. Real good info there.

JoeChio

No offense taken. This isn't copied just all the knowledge from the trials and tribulations of owning a Sammy! lol

Schallabeer

What a comment 👏🏼

C0USC0US

Amazing detail. You even paid the tax! He’s so adorable and dapper.

Current_Vacation_194

Yes…We’ve had 2… u will fall in love with e w them…

[deleted]

She is where she was meant to be.🐾❤️

UnlikelyDecision9820

She’s smiling in every single picture, she is home

No_Example786

Just be patient and remember that “positive reinforcement” is the best way to teach your fur-baby correctly. On a side note: I just adopted a rehomed 6-month old Sammy 20 days ago. He already weighs 51 pounds. (He is already bigger than my 2-year old). They tried to self-groom and made a mess of things. So when we went to meet (and subsequently pickup) Nimbus, he looked funny. AND still had giant mats nearly everywhere. I have a standing grooming appointment for my 2-year old every 5-6 weeks. So I added him to the appointment. It cost me $150 (plus tip) and it was 100% worth every penny. Nimbus came to u very fearful. I talk with my hands and he just cowered. We couldn’t get him to go up the stairs, to the bedrooms at night. We couldn’t get him to play with anything, and he wanted to always be with us and Lilly-Belle. Now nearly 3-weeks later, he is like a totally different dog. He picks up a toy that he wants and walks around with it. He has started learning simple commands, and he comes when called. We still need to work on leach skills, but he will get there. He comes up and down the stairs with like a pro. He is not as fearful, but is can has started “resource guarding” and we are working through these issues. But he such a happy and wonderful addition to our household. So, to give you my best advice, be patient and consistent; AND love him unconditionally. This breed is very sensitive and you can easily break their spirit. Congrats and good luck with your newest family member!

cato314

…nimbus is an excellent name choice

No-Advice-6040

Ugh... you kinda have to wonder how badly they were neglected to be so fearful. Or it's possibly best not to know. How could you be mean to such a wonderful dog, huh.

Ill-Mood3284

You got an angel from heaven, you're blessed! :)

The_Dookie_

As the owner of a recently re-homed dog, this is awesome. Congrats!

Doggoagogo

That is a happy land cloud you have there!

ehuang72

You are all so lucky!

Chester_A_Arthritis

That great to hear. I use the ez walk harness for both of my dogs. You can practically hold your dog with your pinky if they are trying to pull.

Specialist_Banana378

Can’t relate my boy bulls through that😂😂

Amidormi

My sam just counter-pulled through it too. They can be so smart and stubborn.

dianthe

So glad you got her, she is a beauty!

Galaxy_baby_love

She's beautiful inside and out, deserves the best.

Valuable-Impress-828

Sweet baby 🐶❤️

mikmeh

Our first Samoyed was 6 years old from a shelter. We even got a discount on adoption fee because she had been there so long. Best dog ever.

Old_Street_9066

Her smiling while sleeping in pic 2 omg😭😭🤍

BVB09islife

Glad she has a loving family now, hope she goes from strength to strength with you guys

TheQueenKhaleesiMoD

She looks so much like my baby girl. So heart breaking 💔 the way they turned her into the shelter 😭 You are all so lucky to have each other 🤍🤍

WVUfullback

What a sweetie. My first sammie was a pound puppy. He was amazing, I'm sure your girl is too!

Educational_Key_4461

It was meant to be. Congratulations!!

FinancialTip7507

About 15 years ago I got an 8 year old Samoyed from a kill shelter. Owner had died. Somehow she ended up in the shelter. Extreme sweetheart girl.

Aliktren

We adopted ours, old owner died :( , love her to bits lol but so much fur, so much barking :)

Visible-Scientist-46

Unbelievable!! You are so lucky! Sometimes adoptable animals show up in shelters due to emergencies like when an owner dies or lands in jail. Animals services takes custody.

No-Product-2291

Man, a whole lot of good (some over the top) advice here. Let me just add, I have a four year old Sammy. I raised him just as I have any other dog, he lives in a home, he’s not crazy loud, he talks a lot when we are engaging but barking is very minimal, he does great at dog parks, better off leash than on, he has his quirks but like, everything I worked on with him he picked up. He’s not been destructive, doesn’t bark uncontrollably, he’s lovey and cuddly but stays off the furniture. It’s good to be in the know but also, just love your dog and treat her well and she will love ya right back 💙🫶 Congrats, she’s gorgeous!

Ok_Establishment2904

Welcome to the Samoyed family! From one Chicago dog lover to another, my Snowy and I wish you endless cuddles and joy with your new fluffy friend 🐾🎷🏀.

CaptainBungusMcChung

Wishing you many years of happiness with your new fluffy cloud friend!

Abi_W

We also adopted a Samoyed from a shelter, we are very lucky!! She came from a kill shelter in Bosnia, we brought her to the UK and she was in dreadful condition. Despite it all she hopped off the van and gave us a million kisses and cuddled, tail wagging, happiest dog ever, we can't believe how resilient she is. Fast forward 12 months and she is doing so well. My advice would be to give your girl some time to settle, let her adjust and get used to her new surroundings. Have lots of fun with her, she'll love playing and going on adventures with you! Sammies can be super stubborn so set your boundaries and stick to them, that will pay off when it comes to training. Thank you for rescuing the gorgeous girl and congratulations on welcoming your new best friend home.

SamanthaPaige29

What an angel! Thank you for taking her in.

SnooWalruses7530

Awww she looks so happy ☺️💕

xundecided

She’s beautiful and so lucky to have found a forever home so quickly! Sammie’s can be a lot of work and I think a lot of people get roped into their cuteness and don’t understand the work involved. But I can never understand abandoning your dog outside a shelter. She’ll be a handful but I promise you it’s worth everything under the sun. They’re very loyal and loving, and a forever companion! Enjoy!

Pitiful_Pie_7844

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

zdefni

She loves you already🥹

Welp_thatwilldo

Absolutely insane and so glad she found you! I’d cry too bringing that angel home 💕

Current_Vacation_194

Thank God!!

Current_Vacation_194

She’s adorable

JesskaElizabeth82

You guys really hit the jackpot with a sammy❣️

SaucyAndSweet333

So cool you rescued her! Another great example of why we need to adopt and not shop for dogs!

Mirrorsbalalala

At first, I thought I’ll never have a dog in my life because SAMMI is what I only desire. And I don’t want to purchase mammal animals. Now I see hope, I’ll keep my eyes on shelters and see if I can meet my destiny SAMMI. But well, I love dogs, maybe I’ll just adopt a random cutie pie. Hope it to be Sammi though LOL

Far_Whereas_7661

Congratulations!!! People don’t understand what they are getting into when getting a Sammy, which is likely why her previous owners abandoned her (not an excuse of course). Sammy’s are working dogs. They need stimulation and lots of attention, or they can be loud and destructive. We use a gentle leader for walks, and it has been the only way to walk our big boy safely (he pulled my aunt down and briefly got away from her on a walk with a “no pull” harness before we found the gentle leader). I can’t recommend the gentle leader enough for the safety of your sweet baby and yourself. Congratulations again!!

m4gik

The second pic with her sleeping and smiling is perfection!

Antique_Engine_2160

Congrats on your new baby! She is gorgeous and you will make so many beautiful memories with her!

No-Advice-6040

It's always wild to me that a Samoyed could ever end up in a shelter. How could you not give her your everything? Also, her face looks SO much like one of mine from years gone by. Pretty girl, you've done well to bring her in to your life.

Samoyedsandwich

She’s a beauty! :) LOTS of exercise and the occasional beef cheek roll (a type of dog chew) to keep her out of trouble. Low carb, high protein diet (preferably not kibble) for better behavior and health. And perhaps most importantly, allow her to be involved in your activities as much as possible. There’s nothing a Sammy loves more than just being around their owner :)

Purple_Cow_8675

Awww sweet what's her name!? And potty pads with designated areas when in house, spray vinegar with twater tobget rid of snell do shw go there again. Walk her after each meal with enough time for her to go then work up to making her wait so she'll ask to go out. I got my old dog rip sane age took us a bit too.
