I work in a place where we hear about scams like this CONSTANTLY. It doesn't seem to get younger people as often but check on your grandparents/parents. People loose hundrends of thousands of dollars to these things constantly. Is someone ever asks you to give them money over the phone, buy a gift card, or even claims to be someone you know PLEASE verify all information on your own before sending a dime. Remember that these people only do it because it works, if people stopped falling for them it wouldn't be a thing. I'm glad you caught it early OP most tons aren't as lucky.
Yeah, they tried to pull a similar scam on me: Demanded I drive to downtown SD for something called "Jury Duty" and wouldn't cover the parking fees and only offered to pay $15 to be there for an entire day?! Sorry, but I know what the wage laws are in California, this isn't India.
Nice try scammers. Toss those scam letters.
My grandma got a jury summons and:
1.) She has never been a US citizen, she just came to visit 3 or 4 times from Thailand.
2.) She's been dead for 10 years
Um..... jury duty is only paid at like 15 dollars a day.
Edit: this is what I get for being awake for 24 hours and just getting off work...... absolutely over my head.
I can't even remember the last time I answered a call where I didn't recognize the number. If someone isn't in my whitelist then my phone won't even ring and they can leave a VM instead.
My take on that is that if they’re really trying to get ahold of me they’ll leave a message. And they get to leave a message only after listening to 45 seconds of incoherent rambling.
Depending on your carrier you may be able to set up multiple numbers. I'm on Google fi and do this. When I get a call it shows what number they are calling. I have 3. One for work, personal, and nonsense.
Use my area code idea above. Change your number to a place you've never been and know no one. You'll get a ton of calls from that area code after that and you'll know you won't need to answer them. It'll screen out the majority of bs calls.
Lol I don't even check my voicemail anymore. It's been full for idk how long. Most people know to text at this point. I changed my phone number to an area code where I've never been and know no one. Any time I get a call from that area code, I know I don't need to answer or worry about missing the call.
Yes this same scam happened to my brother. Luckily I was there to intervene and call bullshit on the guy while on the phone and he eventually hung up before saying “fuck outta here”. Loser ass bitch
They called me, and it spooked me because I actually did have jury duty, but it was for the following day. I thought it was a mix-up, but then I realized that if I had been subpoenaed, they have to serve you in person, which never happened.
No police department calls you on the phone to tell you this. They would hand-deliver it to you in person (typically a third party will, sometimes local sherrifs do if the process server cannot catch you in person).
Also, they come to you, you don't go to them.
Same thing just happened to my friend this week. They wanted her to go to the Sheriff’s office to pay a fine for not showing up to a Jury duty summons. He told her which office to go to (Santee) and they would have someone meet her there. Red flags. She said he had an American voice and knew her address and some family info. Oh and he said that there is a gag order and she couldn’t tell anyone about this. But she did, and realized it was a scam. The caller got mad and aborted the mission.
I've never showed up to a single jury duty summons, not once. If they want to be able to prove you got the summons, they should have it served like any considerate ex-spouse would do. I'm not losing pay because some rando allegedly committed a crime.

Now I’m curious where you work lol
IT for a local Police Department
I work for an engineering construction firm and deal with a lot of clients
Lol not you silly 😜

I was about I say “This scam sounds exactly like SD jury duty, they’re getting clever,” then I realized the joke LOL.
Yup it happened fmy grandma. Ugh I got my first jury summons recently :(

Oh I wish it was.

DO NOT REDEEM
I love Kit! Haha

It's just best practice nowadays. Don't answer calls from unknown numbers. Don't reply to "wrong number" text messages.
I also turn off “read receipts” bc they’ll see you read it and know it’s a cell/real person and keep bothering you
Scams aside, I've always turned off read receipts for the sheer social awkwardness of them.
That is tough for me cause I get work calls from numbers not in my phone.

Buy another phone for work. It’s tax deductible.

This is pretty common occurrence on r/Scams.
Why would SD sheriff be enforcing federal? Wouldn't it be US Marshals?
That shows you intelligent yet dumb because you’re right.
I got a call like that. Red flag number one was that the San Diego sheriff had a Texas area code
Out of curiosity, what method of payment were they asking for?
I didn’t get that far. They were trying to get $3,046.50 out of me
Wow. If it went far enough, I bet they would have demanded Apple or Google Play gift cards
That would convince me it was truly SD police

They got my mom 3 years ago for 3k

I had them repeat everything twice so I could waste their time

Thanks for the heads up because people are tricked easily and I’m sure this will help a lot of people
Thanks for the heads up 🙆🏽♀️🙆🏽♀️🙆🏽♀️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Damn I wish they called me…I would have a field day with it

A gag order for failure to appear?? Ahahaha! 🤣
lol ikr.

The city or state don't care if you do or don't to federal stuff The feds would have called you
State and federal to different giants federal is the father and state is the son
Ma'am, are you a prostitute?!
I’d tell them to come get me but make sure to bring plenty of guns.
