Seriously what the fuck is up with this one specific stretch of road?! Every time I drive to San Diego from Irvine, there's some terrible collision on that EXACT stretch of land. And I just wonder...why?
I think it may have to do with how few lanes there are and how they’re utilized. I’ve noticed that people clog up the lanes by driving slow, not passing others, or just generally not allowing others to pass. I’d imagine this might be causing people to get frustrated, have road rage, or unsafely pass. Just some theories.
Yeah, pretty much all of the 5 is like this. At least between here and the Bay Area. I just drove from there today and saw some D bag almost run someone off the road after someone got in front of him and trapped him in the lane by going slower than 75.
Long stretch with no entrance or exit means traffic speeds up a lot. More speed means more chances for wrecks and when they do occur they are bigger collisions
Is driving the speed limit too slow for some people? Therefore pass on the right? When did that become OK.? Oh ya, the entitled generation. Try the speed limit people. Then, you won’t need to pass. If I’m hovering at 75. I’m being passed by most on that stretch. If you need to get there sooner, leave earlier. It’s simple.
The way I phrased it is ripe for misinterpretation; I make the drive down maybe once every other week or so at most. I don't live in SD and work in Irvine.
Well on the plus side I just saw that the bullet train from LA to the bay just got the final environmental approval. Too bad it doesn’t go all the way to SD

There was a fatality, which explains why they closed the entire freeway for so long.

That stretch of the 5 is almost constantly choked. The only thing slowing traffic down lately has been CalTrans replacing guardrails in a couple spots by Oceanside.
Just passed this Northbound. Looks terrible. Long debris field. I saw a 2 mangled motorcycles, overturned van and a trashed jeep. Drive carefully.
I passed it as well and I couldn't believe the state of the Jeep. The traffic went on for miles. I was definitely more cautious after that.

100%. You can go faster in the right lanes than the left lanes due to these lane campers.
I noticed I wasn't the only one passing on the far right lane every time I'm on this stretch of the 5.

Very true, it’s the only place where the lanes are flipped and the far right lane becomes the fast lane, while the fast lane becomes the slowest lane
People don’t know how to merge. They purposely slow down passed the Las Pulgas gate for whatever reason

Neanderthals driving from Irvine to San Diego everyday instead of living where they work.

The fact it doesn’t extend all the way to SD is beyond me like why
That's phase 2 which probably is like 30 years away at this point
