Those who expected scythe Lucifer to be cool have missed the point. He wasn't supposed to be this Arnold Schwarzenegger-esque, indestructible, unstoppable Gary Stu who will wipe the floor with all of the bad guys - he was meant as a deconstruction of that adolescent fantasy.
After a brief period of success, scythe Lucifer's actions have caught up with him and he was captured, and spend most of the series paying for his mistakes. The scythes he targetted have finally wised up and trapped him. The man he assaulted, predictably, wasn't grateful that his attacker had *only* beat him up and didn't murder him (lol). His father died for his little crussade and the rest of his family was forced to suffer (one brother even chose to be supplanted). Rowan himself has spent most of the series an abused prisoner, his name has become so hated he was a very convenient scapegoat for Goddard's coup.
He was no Steven Segal, just a boy who made many mistakes with serious consequences, and that was the whole point.
What mistake did he do? Just killed cruel Scythes who BTW killed thousands of innocent. Ik its their job description to kill. But they should expect death just as easily they give others.
He went on his self-righteous crusade, foolishly expecting that he can help the Scythedom corruption problem that way, and equally foolishly assuming the only life he's endangering with it is his own. That was the classic naivety of youth, and he was proven wrong on both accounts. He was captured, his actions made him a convenient scapegoat for the crimes of a rising dictator, and his loved ones suffered for his mistakes.
Tbf, he wasn’t the protagonist. He is so close to being one but he’s still not THE main character. His imprisonment was important for citras development.
Yup, noticed the same issue. There was no shortage of interesting situations for Rowan to engage with, especially in the Toll, so I have no idea why Shusterman relied on treating Rowan like an inanimate object for most of the series.

Yeah I wasn't a fan of that. I expected way more out of Scythe Lucifer.
Sorry, I'll try better next time
