The first one is just safety pins

NextStopGallifrey

It looks like it'd be terrible to deal with. If you don't weld/solder the pins shut somehow, they could bend/come undone in the wash, which isn't ideal. But if you do fasten them shut, you have to deal with them rusting. In my experience, safety pins aren't made of high quality stainless steel and they tend to rust in the wash.

pinkbrandywinetomato

I used to wear clothes held together by safety pin in highschool because I thought it looked cool, and it is pretty terrible to deal with. The pins didn't pop open in the wash, but they would pop open sometimes when I was wearing them so I would get poked regularly. I don't remember them rusting, but it was a long time ago.

AutumnMama

Op's photo looks like it's from a runway, so it's possible these aren't normal safety pins, but custom made ones that are heavier duty than normal.

NextStopGallifrey

I think it's more likely that it was only ever worn for the runway and then thrown away.

AutumnMama

Yeah that does sound likely

HeyheythereMidge

Probably not thrown away, but “achieved” (put in storage to rot).

throwingwater14

Archived. But yes. Probably.

Clear_Spirit4017

Could the top just be pinched together? It should keep the pin closed.

PuffyCat_139

I did this with safety pins I used in a shirt I wore as a teen. Row of safety pins all the way around the midsection, holding top half and bottom half together. Worked fine. The only issue I ever had was when of them got caught on the mesh pocket on my binder. All that being said, I feel like holding pants together might be a different story!

Clear_Spirit4017

Sounds like a cute shirt. Glad you made it through the day with no further mishaps.

wildcard-inside

My flatmates also broke the washing machine several times washing clothes that had safety pins because they came undone and got into the pump so welding them closed is a great idea for that reason too

alienhealy

Some safety pins rust, and some don’t. If you order them from a dry cleaning supply source, those are meant to withstand laundering, so they won’t rust and designed to not pop open at random

SHolmesSkittle

The third one is hooks and eyes. As for the second one ... drawer handles? Or maybe grommets with O-rings?

Auntie_FiFi

I think the second ones are 'D' rings like you would find on handbags.

amaranth1977

Definitely grommets with O-rings through them.

thepetoctopus

I think the third one is trouser/skirt bars. So no hooks, just the eyes so to speak.

AutumnMama

So the first pic is too blurry for me to say for sure, but they really look like they're just safety pins. Do you have any better pics, and are you sure they're not just safety pins? (I believe this was a high fashion trend recently as well. I remember Miley Cyrus had an entire dress made of safety pins for some red carpet thing.)

yAyeetgonnadelete

I actually just looked at it a second time and they do in fact look like they’re just safety pins! They made it look very professional though haha

AutumnMama

Whew! I'm glad I suggested it, I almost didn't because I thought it was kind of a dumb thing to say! Lol If this is from a big red carpet/runway designer, I actually wouldn't be surprised if the safety pins were custom made to be more heavy duty than regular safety pins. But you could definitely achieve the same look with regular ones.

bettyboop11133

This was how many ‘90s outfits were held together! It was a very popular style!!

LongjumpingSnow6986

I think it started with the punk movement. Part of the aesthetic was rejecting capitalism and wearing literal garbage. Ironically capitalism just mimicked the style and sold it back to us.

Unsd

They were still very popular well into the early 2000s Avril Lavigne era. My friend and I, at like 10 years old, tried our hand at fashion design by cutting up one of my old ballet leotards and safety pinning it back together. My mom was PISSED. It looked cool though! That was like 20 years ago and I'm still pretty impressed by that one. Had a little one shoulder moment...it was great. Safety pins always take me back to that 😂

bettyboop11133

Maybe it was the 2000s. All the negative comments are way off.

RedKittieKat

The last pic is hook and eye tape 🌷 If you Google that term you will find all kinds including this version. https://preview.redd.it/7xonquu3mt9d1.png?width=951&format=png&auto=webp&s=73c7aeecb6f8b72fe472e0d9c1221076a04cef2c

SerendipityJays

These could be piercing bars with screw-on ends. I had a hoodie with this detail once. You may like to add a dab of glue inside the end caps otherwise they are endlessly falling out! eta: ah nope sorry these are safety pins 😅 (just saw the other side of the garment, where you can see the whole shape better)

TooBusyOverthinking

Jeans in the first picture are actually made by Act N°1, it's a 2023 Fall-Winter collection. You can find high quality pictures on their store page here: [https://actn1.com/products/safety-pin-reconstructed-jeans](https://actn1.com/products/safety-pin-reconstructed-jeans) As other redditors mentioned, those are safety pins. I really hope these are not regular safety pins. Just looking at the details in the back of jeans made me feel uncomfortable, lol. As to the rings in the second picture, that looks like big spring gate round rings. They are often used in jeans chains or key chains. Edit: Fashion is art, designers draw with fabrics, notions, accessories, textures, shapes, etc. and multiplied by hours of work. So if you are into it, then you do you! :) Plus, if you are going to make a garment yourself, you can adjust the cut outs to make it work for you! I remember custom DYI jeans cut above or below the knee (thinking of ergonomics) and decorated with oversized safety pins were popular back in 2000’s. I’m sure you can find a plenty of videos on how to make your own.

cirena

The placement of that first set of pins....that's just begging for some major chafing with my body type.

Sakuko_Armadillo

How can those jeans purport to have 5 pockets? You can see clearly that the front pockets have no pocket bags at all.

dandyanddarling21

The last one is this heavy duty hook and eye tape. You just sew it on either side of the opening. https://preview.redd.it/hzssanx47w9d1.png?width=2448&format=png&auto=webp&s=87c89fc3d6aae7bc93c2bbddf4b5c1d55fd9e38e

oldwellprophecy

First is safety pins, second just looks like individual metal rings and the last are hook and eyes

bettyboop11133

I can’t believe that no one is talking about how this was so popular in the ‘90s!!! And all the negative comments…. it’s no different that creating any other type of art or craft or delicate work. You do it for the love of the craft or the love of fashion!!! OP go for it! Have fun!

MissBandersnatch2U

The second one looks like those rings that snap together for holding papers together, similar to the rings in a binder but loose and individual

subgirl13

Loose leaf binder rings Edited to add, link: https://www.talasonline.com/Loose-Leaf-Rings

MissBandersnatch2U

Yes, exactly

trashjellyfish

The first one is safety pins, the second is O-rings and grommets, and the third is hook and eye closures.

TheCulchieLife

Echoing everyone, the first is safety pins but if you want to recreate it but are concerned about safety look into diaper/nappy safety pins. They are stronger, thicker, and less likely to open up as they're designed to be worn next to a baby's skin. You can get big ones with plastic baby themed decor which is more common, but you can also get the plain versions in multiple sizes. I think the other two are hooks and loops, though the second pic looks Photoshopped to be much bigger than it is but you can still kinda see it. Good luck!

t92k

You could head over to your local hardware store and see what they have in the fasteners and cable aisles. A few small locking carabiners and a grommet kit, for example. Or lace them together with some jacketed cable. I don’t think any of these would hold up well to machine washing or frequent washing, so I’d save the effort for a statement piece.

CannibalisticVampyre

Definitely be cautious with hardware store findings; some of them will rust and others are going to be oily.

mckenner1122

This old lady is quietly wondering how many of her original punk club outfits from fdecades ago or so are still tucked away somewhere… Part of the fun is finding great *accoutrements* that worked. I had more success at Ace Hardware and Tandy Leather than I ever did at my local fabric shop. Grommets for shower curtains could slam together multiple layers of fabric or vinyl (or both!) and ALSO hold up to washing. Long flexible springs were spiralled by hand into the bottom edge of knits to make industrial hems. If you can shop by hand and touch and feel things, you’ll get inspired for sure!

tarra_hills

If you're wanting to make, wear and wash this sort of thing, d rings through grommets might hold up for a while, but they are tedious, especially when you take into account that you'll have put in all those grommets and then close every single ring. If it'd be a 1 time wear, or you've got the effort to take off and put back on a million safety pins, they'd give the look from the first pic without the need for soldering or welding all the pins closed while still being able to wash and rewear.

FalseAsphodel

They're also expensive! D-rings chunky enough would also be heavy if you have that many of them

bettyboop11133

Definitely not true!!! I can’t believe that no one is talking about how this was so popular in the ‘90s!!! You can wash on gentle or hand was but I promise you that the teens of the ‘90s didn’t! As far is tedious, it’s no different that creating any other type of art or craft or delicate work. You do it for the love of the craft or the love of fashion!!!

RareBad1372

I think the easiest way to achieve this look would be with hooks and eyes, a la pic #3. You could smush them with pliers and they would be unlikely to come apart in the wash. As for pic #2, the holes in the shirt that the rings are passing through are grommets. It's pretty easy to install these - they usually come with a little tool and all you need is a hammer. The c- shaped rings look custom. I've seen ribbon threaded through these to create a similar effect, but maybe you could use a chain instead?

unluckyheathen

Safety pins and large guage jump rings. Oh, and i missed the hook and eye setup on the third pic..

bloodymongrel

I’m so confused why people are so worried about weight and washability! Go forth and experiment :) you’ll figure about what works and what doesn’t. I think the general term in this context would be ‘clothing hard ware’. In each of your images there seems to be a different category though, 1: Safety Pins (general purpose tool) 2: O ring and grommet/eyelet (bag hardware) 3: hook and eye tape (garment fastenings). Lots and lots of different options available. Just the various types of tapes are interesting as an embellishment even if they’re not ‘functional’ as intended.

Mela777

I think the second picture might be some variation of a riveted D-loop used on purses. Something [like this.](https://snapstools.com/products/arch-bridge-buckle)

thepetoctopus

The second one is grommets and D rings.

SnorlaxIsCuddly

FYI the clothes you see on a runway are rarely ever meant to be worn off the runway.

ColdEstablishment473

Safety pins!

FalseAsphodel

I would recommend, if you want a wearable garment that will wash well, to sew the denim panels onto an under layer of powermesh or other mesh fabric. I think you could get a cool look that way without having to spend hours and hours installing metal hardware that will weigh a ton and make you clink when you walk

CannibalisticVampyre

Safety pins. Grommets & O-Rings. I can’t see the last pic well enough to tell, but they look like hook and eye or something similar?

perseidene

Those are all safety pins through grommets.

perseidene

…upon closer look, not even through grommets

perseidene

The second looks like o-rings through grommets and the last one are frog closures of some sort.

Sapphire_Peacock

For the pants, you could get a similar look using metallic hand embroidery thread. A french tack would probably have the strength needed. The challenge would be making each one the same length.

Important-Client1455

Commections

dramabeanie

Second one could be binder rings/book rings and metal grommets. They're metal rings with a hinge that can be opened and closed. Nangba1013

Whatever you call it I like it great job designing. Yes I do like it. Rings? Attachments? Love you all have a great day

shillingforshecrets

Order quality safety pins from Wotever and they will stay shut and go through the wash. I use them at work a lot and have them on most of my clothing. The second one looks like grommets and hooks, if you go to your local fabric store and ask someone there to help you they’re kind of fun to play with and easier than you might think. They come with a special tool.

LordRiverknoll

They look like construction staples

muwurder

these are all different. first is safety pins, second is grommets with either D or O rings in them, third is hook-and-eye closures.

Crepes_for_days3000

1st- safety pin 2nd- rings through eyelets 3rd- hooks & eyes

NYanae555

Pic 2 reminds me of "pad eyes." But you see them everywhere with different names / shapes / sizes - anchor strap - eye strap - anchor point. I wonder if these are really metal because that top would be heavy. A pad eye, plus grommets and rivets ? Heavy.

NYanae555

Here is a pad eye - [https://usstainless.com/10-pieces-stainless-steel-316-3-16-5mm-heavy-duty-cast-pad-eye-marine-grade/](https://usstainless.com/10-pieces-stainless-steel-316-3-16-5mm-heavy-duty-cast-pad-eye-marine-grade/)

Spirits-Surround-Me

#2 is the same as on a fireman's jacket. I can't remember what they are called. Ralph Lauren used those on several coats.

aja_ramirez

Staples?

CannibalisticVampyre

Rude

Nanasays

Sorry. It’s just my opinion. I must say the ones on the top aren’t bad. The ones on the pants look like an accident waiting to happen.

CannibalisticVampyre

Opinions are perfectly acceptable, but one can express them without being unkind.
