My girl has an 11 year old cat sister and kitty is the resident hunter. There was a mouse and I thought shibe wanted to eat it. No, she wanted to play with it. Her sister finished her job and my girl found the corpse and whimpered.
Yeah, I love ❤️ dogs and cats, but even though they’re our fur babies, part of our family, best friends, etc. we must always remember THEY ARE ANIMALS and act accordingly. Sadly these stories are a needed PSA of that fact for some.
I’m so sorry you had to see all that. I’ve been there. Feel your feels. It’s a good thing. Shows you’re a kind soul.
Mine chased one into our basement and ripped her tail off. The next day, he found her nest and murdered her ONLY baby.
I sobbed all night.
It's nature. But it also sucks 😭
One of mine has almost 0 prey drive and only runs after deer. The other has almost killed 2 squirrels and killed 1 bird. I say almost cause the she stopped before the squirrels were actually dead so I had to finish them off. Which was an ordeal cause it took several attempts with a heavy plank of wood. My other shiba, that has now passed, killed 2 squirrels. And like yours, looked extremely proud of herself afterwards.
My girl caught a baby bird and ran around the yard with it. It was traumatizing. I ended up getting the fledgling and giving it to a local wildlife rehabilitation center. Poor guy. Also your shibe looks really impressed with themself 😂
our boy caught a bird mid flight but I was unable to claim it from his grasp. he had the gall to run under the porch, look me in the eyes, and swallow the bird whole. he was def proud of that catch, me on the other hand was a little traumatized
I don't know why I laughed so hard. This whole thread is so sad, but it is the sad reality of life and nature. But this picture is just so...🤣🤣🤣 Sheebs is like, "You good, bro?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I had a shiba growing up that killed a duck. My family and I (my parents and brothers) were on a family walk alongside some ponds. Our shiba stopped and stood on shore watching this very specific duck. It seemed like the duck was sick or hurt or something and kind of struggling to swim. Our shiba was curious about it and sniffing the air as the duck started swimming towards her. We watched and thought out loud together “how cute they are interested in one another.” It all seemed so innocent. But, the second that duck got close to our shiba, she went from wide-eyed Disney character to killer. She grabbed its neck, snapped it, and dragged it out of the water. It was so fucking crazy. I never looked at her the same after that. In hindsight I blame my parents. Haha
I think the nature of the dog. Our guy killed a rabbit and brought the leftover leg to my wife as a present. He looked so proud and happy to give that to her. We never found the rest.
On the plus side, it was the only one he ever caught, and he was no longer able to catch them as he got older. But they did keep him busy.
My two male shibas have killed at least two rabbits and one bird - and they aren't outdoor dogs. I let them in the backyard to run off energy for less than an hour a day, otherwise they get long walks. They also cornered an armadillo and a turtle, but those I was able to intervene and rescue with no damage that I could see.
You must be so proud. Obviously it’s sad but they try so hard.
My shiba has been trying to kill an animal for eight years. One time the rabbit chasing made a high-pitched squealing sound so she definitely scared it, but that’s as far as it’s gone.
These are hunting dogs first and foremost. Please be careful. Rabbits and bunnies can really fight. Their back legs are strong, and their claws can do some serious damage
Ours has killed two baby deer, a baby rabbit and possum ☹️
She threw up the head of the baby bunny on our stairs right in front of my then 3 year old daughter. ‘‘Twas quite traumatic for all 😩
My friend has a king calvary and it’s over weight and they had a hamster they were babysitting and the dog bit the head off. These dogs are killers and hunters and instincts kick in. Shibas are one of the oldest breeds and most closely related to wolves so not surprised. Just glad you and your pup are ok. These things happen and don’t let it get you down and just keep them away from little animals they can kill
We had Shibes and now have Jindos.
Our female has a HUGE prey drive.
My daughter is in 4H and got Turkey Chicks a few weeks ago.
One of them started trying to slip through a crack in the cage and our girl went and yoinked it the rest of the way through and came trotting into the Family Room with it in her mouth.
1 less Turkey to feed and now we have something like a cross between a baby gate and a doggie gate in a 3 foot buffer around their cage.
My Shiba never killed anything, but my shikoku has a list at this point. She beheaded a hedgehog, killes mice around the house, grabs and sometimes killes birds. When theyre dead she leaves them be. Shes cute tho lol
They are a hunting breed with very high prey drive, so don't act surprised they hunted small things.
Don't punish either as it's in their nature instead take this into account and avoid situations like this again by leasing your Shiba in open spaces if you are afraid of them hunting.
Yeah, it is horrific to witness, but such is the nature, both brutal and beautiful. Prevent it if you can, but if it happens, do not feel too bad about it. That instinct to hunt and kill is thousands years old and it is not going anywhere soon, it is what they were bred to do.
Their prey drive is so strong.
Mine have killed countless mice, a few birds, and a couple of squirrels. They haven’t caught any hares yet, but that’s certainly not from lack of trying. Hell, both of them have even tried their hand chasing down full-grown deer!
They're natural hunters with a big prey drive. Mine too. She loves to hunt. She's murdered so many bugs and a few lizards that she unfortunately shows me with pride lol. She did kill a spider and leave it on the bed for me not too long shi haha
Love my girl but I’m always aware around small animals. (She likes to try to chase birds and squirrels but never catches them thankfully)
My boy will chase bunnies around our yard. He's almost caught them a few times. I keep telling my fiancé that he will eventually get one and she needs to mentally prepare for the carnage.
Ours snatched a cat. Thankfully the cat turned around in his mouth and beat on him and he let go. Cat got away ok.
I was upset with him for like 2 days.
Mine killed my pet gerbil when I was 14 and left the body on my bed for me when I got home. Shibas are an ancient breed and act more wild than other dogs. They’re also genetically closest to wolves so expect them to have the morals of a wolf
My husky killed 2 of our cats. Didn’t see any external trauma but ver thought it may have been internal. Also apparently cats can be scared to death, literally.
My Shiba girl so far has a known mammal body count of 4, but I suspect it’s actually higher. She has killed two moles and two mice so far that I know about. She also hunts moths, bees, flies and she caught a house spider once. If it moves, she’s on it. I do not interfere with her killing the little things. It sounds barbaric but I’d rather her kill it completely than let her maim it and let it suffer/die slowly. When she is able to get them it’s a split second and a pounce/head shake and they are gone. So much faster.
I do interfere with her eating her prey though. She knows she can kill them and then she brings them to me like trophies.
If my shiba doesn’t kill it, the coyotes will. There are too many bunnies in our area without a predator. They eating everything! Same for mice. They would end up eating rat poison if they weren’t caught by my shiba. The only one I ever felt guilty about was a bird she caught because right after she caught it, I noticed the chirping of baby birds in the neighborhood, but I didn’t know where the noise was coming from.
Three shibas. Girls 9 and 7, boy 5.
Oldest, sheet-killed over 10 voles, several rabbits, birds, no squirrels-still stays outside for hours watching for them to come into the fenced yard.
Younger two(legitimate brother and sister) have played tug of war with a few opposum still death in the backyard, killed several mice , rabbits, etc.
We are in the suburbs with a fenced in yard! No stopping these cute, cuddly prey-driven pups.
Wow my son does archery and wants to hunt rabbits and turkeys. I would get a dog the could help hunt the same game. Sad but it is necessary to keep animals separated.
Mine love to kill field mice. They also would kill a bunny in a heartbeat
My girl has an 11 year old cat sister and kitty is the resident hunter. There was a mouse and I thought shibe wanted to eat it. No, she wanted to play with it. Her sister finished her job and my girl found the corpse and whimpered.

😢omg that’s so sad. Yea too bad it’s their nature. Very cruel sometimes
Awwwww.
Guys, shibas are hunters. You will never get the instinct out of them.
Ours has killed 1 squirrel and 2 birds. He is *very* proud after and our other dogs are like 😲.
One of mine has almost 0 prey drive and only runs after deer. The other has almost killed 2 squirrels and killed 1 bird. Oh. Wow. That is super traumatizing. I would be scarred for life honestly 😂
What would Kristi Noem do? Jk jk
🤣 she would argue the bunny is causing the family harm
Monty Python and The Holy Grail have entered the chat...
Mine has too, it was horrifying, I know they like chasing things, but it’s pretty gnarly to witness
My Shiba boy has killed a squirrel, rabbit, and one lizard. If I could trust him off leash, he would be the best treeing hound I have seen.
Working as intended! My Shiba is no longer allowed on the balcony because he keeps catching birds.
lmao, I’m so glad ours only hunts flies. On the balcony she’s just chilling with sparrows hopping all around her like she’s a Disney princess.
They truly are the cats of the dog world.

I don't know why I laughed so hard. This whole thread is so sad, but it is the sad reality of life and nature. But this picture is just so...🤣🤣🤣 Sheebs is like, "You good, bro?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, it happens. One of mine split a skunk it half from whipping it around. Ended up needing 3 baths, so I think the skunk might have one in the end.
Still cute tho
She’s sitting there with her little paws crossed like “And I’ll do it again.” 😂
My baby girl brought me two headless squirrels, two days in a row. She was extremely proud and had to show me what an amazing hunter she is.
My lil boy killed a blue jay today ☹️ my husband gave it a proper burial
She’s remorseless with her r/fancyfeet

Mine likes to catch the little ones and runs around the yard with them in his mouth, while they squeal in terror.

mine killed a squirrel, my neighbour liked it because the squirrel ate his mango from the tree
Mine killed a chipmunk before, tail was completely ripped apart.. the body was intact but I guess it was dead from shock. Poor thing
My two male shibas have killed at least two rabbits and one bird - and they aren't outdoor dogs. I let them in the backyard to run off energy for less than an hour a day, otherwise they get long walks. We love next to a meadow and mine kills mice as often as he can. It's his primary concern when out on a walk.
Mine has killed a bunny, a bird and multiple field mice. His crowning achievement was killing a skunk, the aftermath of which was very stinky.
In his first 18 months, mine got 15 rabbits, 3 birds, a squirrel, and tried picking a fight with a momma possum
My Shiba has that look in his eyes whenever he sees a bunny that he needs to destroy it. So not surprising lol
Poohcifer’s kill list is 2 bunnies, 3 birds and 2 desert mice.
Ours has killed two baby deer, a baby rabbit and possum ☹️ She threw up the head of the baby bunny on our stairs right in front of my then 3 year old daughter. ‘‘Twas quite traumatic for all 😩

Don’t think about it, dogs have prey drive, rabbits hump like there’s no tomorrow nature has its ways
Self defense

Shiba was bred to hunt small animals(柴), it's sad but it's nature .

Mine has killed several opossums that have snuck into our yard and a couple of sidewalk chickens.
Mine got a full sized rabbit this winter.
Their prey drive is so strong. Mine have killed countless mice, a few birds, and a couple of squirrels. They haven’t caught any hares yet, but that’s certainly not from lack of trying. Hell, both of them have even tried their hand chasing down full-grown deer!
This will likely be the first of many. On the bright side, you'll never have mice in your house!

My shiba wants to kill small animals, but she’s the worst hunter I’ve ever seen…. 14 years and never even come close at catching a thing.

Ours did, too, and brought some of it to us as a ‘gift’. She doesn’t understand bunnies are friends and not food 🤦🏼♀️

Welcome to the club 😬
6 more and he’ll be at King Von’s body count
My little Mikoto (16 months old) just eliminated her second gopher. Her proudest moment!
Mine has run up a tree and snatch a baby squirrel from its mother. I pulled it from the jaws then it hobbled away.

My is following the leaves, 9 months old
Mine once brought the head back in as a gift 😭
Oh, who's a cute little killer? 😍
Wow my son does archery and wants to hunt rabbits and turkeys. I would get a dog the could help hunt the same game. Sad but it is necessary to keep animals separated.
So what, nature at it,s will. A lot of dogs have wolf in them. Chiwauwah ( sorry) have none but they think they are six feet tall.
