Rip Ge Xin. The real crime is starhub and singtel charging sky high scammer prices for cable TV and football package.

helloween123

Sky high prices for unreliable laggy streaming, semo blue bird hor

MrCreepJoe

The real scam are the ads.

Ash7274

Netflix is fucking 25/mth now And Disney is like what 18/mth And these are big corporations that refuse to pay their writers so ....

Davichitime

Can they make movie tickets cheaper too? 2 adult tickets to gv last weekend with popcorn and coke was 40+šŸ«  Iā€™m happy to go to the movies but that kind of price makes streaming seem value

Ash7274

Went to watch Dune 2 in Imax at JB for only Rm17 (less than $5) In Singapore, a normal ticket would have cost me almost 10 dollars already It doesn't feel worth it to watch movies in SG anymore tbh

Davichitime

Tix are also more expensive on weekends, when working folks have time to go watchā€¦

Ash7274

It's one of the reasons why i would never work a office hour job Yes you can watch after work on a weekday but you'll be tired and can't fully enjoy the movie

ssss861

What's the alternative? Any industry to recommend?

Ash7274

Shift jobs

dlumz

FA

Creative-Lack-6562

Rather pay extra for movie tix than being a FA

Budget-Juggernaut-68

Pilots. Pretty good money and work life balance.

Worldly-Mix4811

Except in Malaysia they censored key bits of any movie Malaysian censors deem 'inappropriate'. Like that scene in Dune 2.

Ash7274

That's true. I was looking forward to that scene hahahaha

aloha_sneckbar

What was censored in dune2 for screenings in malaysia? Damn i didnt even realised

123SY567

Now normal ticket price is SGD15.50

Davichitime

Thatā€™s the problem with the cinema. Netflix isnā€™t cheap but at least my partner and I can binge watch every night after work. 2 movie tix is already more than our netflix sub. If finances are tight Iā€™d rather cut out going to the cinema and keep streaming services (I also have a prime sub) And Pls donā€™t get me started on cost of popcorn/coke/ice cream at GV.

Ash7274

Whack af

MrCreepJoe

I wish for the money they are charging they would take the time to at least clean the screen it's so filled with dust and grime that they show on the movie.

ahbengtothemax

call me crazy but 15 bucks doesn't seem that unreasonable

zoinks10

Unless you love really near JB and love traipsing there and back, isnā€™t your time worth more than the movie ticket savings?

Ash7274

I live in Woodlands and don't work 9 to 5. Faster for me to go to JB than to go to Airport or Town Basically anywhere with a good theatre experience Obviously I won't just go for the movie so my time won't be wasted

zoinks10

Fair enough. Whenever Iā€™ve tried going over itā€™s been a pain in the ass. If itā€™s an option for you then go for it. Sounds quite good.

harnet58

Good luck queuing to go jb

tommiyu

Finland a iMax ticket is about 23ā‚¬ and a medium popcorn with drink combo is 10ā‚¬ I know this ainā€™t Singapore but just showing it could be much much worse šŸ˜‚

fallenspaceman

I paid 18aud to watch a movie in Melbourne. There were electric reclining seats, alcoholic drinks, enough space to walk through the aisle without getting on anyways way and the chairs were so plush and comfy. It was like business class seats. After seeing that I just refuse to spend any money at the shit show that is GV.

livebeta

I used to pay $13 USD (but also earned USD) a movie. Good times at AMC Mercado Very comfortable seats. Free seating too so FCFS cheong best seat. On Sunday mid mornings after church it's possible to get Matinee tickets for $6 USD...

FunnyShadow2

Invest in your home and be pirate

Ohyeah215

they call me captain jack sparrow

Renegade_Manifesto

Aye matey

MrCreepJoe

Though steaming companies sometimes don't have the full series on their platform as some season are on a different platform due to then owning the rights to it at that moment, it's so bad that some franchise have guides on how to watch their series on streaming platforms.

ssss861

Rather just invest in my own sound system if i really want that experience.

xX_BobbyWasabi69_Xx

netflix has gotten worse too, who the fuck even pays 25 a month for the slop they have on there?

justln

Shared account goes for $5 per month or $45 per year.

Davichitime

On the writer/strike thing, I wish I could just go on strike because ai might replace my job some dayā€¦

EnycmaPie

The one store in Sim Lim that isn't scamming, and they get charged with crime.

kingng93

Who snitched??

hamiwin

ā€œIf convicted, Ge faces a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to S$100,000, or both per charge.ā€ https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/van-driver-27-pleads-guilty-causing-death-pedestrian-he-collided-bedok-reservoir-car-park-2343141 ā€œFor driving a vehicle without due care resulting in a death, Yau faces a fine of up to S$10,000, up to three years in jail or both.ā€ So the punishment is harsher than killing a pedestrian?

Paaipoi_

Reckless driving You = die Pedestrian = die Netflix, Disney bottom line = same Unlicenced content You = happy Pedestrian = happy Netflix, Disney bottom line = -$20/month Understand now ?

cinnabunnyrolls

Of that $20, 9% GST and corpo profit taxes are being stolen from the govt. You make them lose money, that is the cardinal sin of the state.

pepapiglovescat

If the same is said for the reckless driving and it happens to be some big shot or minister son/daughter, you bet your ass they gonna change the road laws and policies.

dontknowwhattodoat18

We need to start a fundraiser to help this fallen soldier

A-Chicken

Piracy charges have been more punitive than rape and murder since we sold out to the American FTA; we have known this since a certain company called Odex and its legal threats against torrenters.

Common-Metal8578

That is a rare singaporean name.

Mattdumdum

New Singaporean names!

hoo_diss

LOL media officer got humour game.

livebeta

For those who are using screen readers or can't read Chinese words, the thumbnail is of a police tactical team apparently doing a raid. The subtitles say , in Chinese "Police" (usually used by the police announcing themselves)

Blueflame_1

You don't fuck with the mouse

fallenspaceman

I once had an article published where I joked about Kylo Ren being a Disney Princess because of his frequent tantrums and Haus of Maus PR hunted me down. They found me on Facebook and got my phone number as well. Have no doubt their PMCs would have kicked down my door and assassinated me if I didn't edit it in time. (this is a joke Disney don't sue)

stormearthfire

NIDORAX

I am guessing the authorities must have been aware about this for a long time and only took action last year because of a complain by Starhub , Singtel and Disney.

arcanist12345

The government doesn't give two shits about porn/piracy until incidentally see you performing the act or some company makes noise. I'd prefer it this way - they focus on catching and preventing big criminals. Compare to msia - the government sponsors a team to fucking raid people's houses so they don't do premarital sex.

Sea_Consequence_6506

Different priorities. We pander to corpos, they pander to zealots

Common-Metal8578

Not really pander to corpos. Corpos also lanlan. They know there are so many other options to pirate their content but you can't let someone continue to literally run a brick and mortar store pirating their content in the middle of singapore right under their nose without some form of enforcement. It could affect them legally.

AnonDooDoo

Ahh haha, had one of these before.. before I knew how to sail the seas

Title: Man charged with selling illegal streaming devices at Sim Lim Square, infringing copyright of Disney, Netflix SINGAPORE: A man who ran two shops in Sim Lim Square was charged in court on Tuesday (Mar 26) for selling illegal streaming devices and offering to install computer programs that would help customers watch pirated shows. Ge Xin, a 36-year-old Singaporean, was charged along with the two companies - MT Gadget+ and Grandnew. He allegedly infringed the copyright of companies like Disney, Netflix and the Football Association Premier League by selling devices that came installed with programmes that could access copyrighted shows such as Raya and the Last Dragon, The Adam Project and Premier League games. Ge is also accused of infringing the copyright of other works such as Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore by Warner Bros, Discovery Channel by Discovery and Top Gun Maverick by Paramount Pictures. Ge was handed 24 charges under the Copyright Act for selling illegal streaming devices or for offering the installation of computer programmes that would help customers access copyrighted shows. His companies received 12 charges each for corresponding offences. The police said in a statement that officers from the Criminal Investigation Department launched simultaneous raids at several retail shops in Sim Lim Square on Oct 4, 2022, seizing more than 400 sets of illegal streaming devices from Ge's two shops. The raid was the first publicised crackdown on illegal streaming devices since a law banning the sale of pirate set-top boxes was passed in September 2021. If convicted, Ge faces a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to S$100,000, or both per charge. His companies face fines of up to S$200,000 each. The cases for Ge and his two companies have been adjourned for pre-trial conferences. *** Article keywords: ge charge device company illegal streaming shop sell 1848 articles replied in my database. GG sia

Appropriate_Newt4327

When bottomline gets hurt, people will be embraced by the long arm of law.

Glum-Main-1515

Bro need move to indo or malay, we have so many illegal streaming device in the market, since intellectual property in here not strict as spore

Roguenul

Basically, if you're a Fortune 500 company and price gouge your customers by abusing your monopoly power / market dominance, that's legal. If you dare to steal from them however, that's criminal. That's Capitalism in a nutshell, folks. Rules for thee, not for me ("me" being the rich).Ā

Initial_E

How does this technology work?

Separate-Ad9638

its either hacked devices or illegal streaming sites. It takes a syndicate to set it up though, that man is just doing the POS stuff.

livebeta

So the question is if he sells tools but does not carry out the act is he guilty of the act? It's like is Home Depot / Lowe's , responsible for a chainsaw murderer?

Separate-Ad9638

he can be indicted by the law, that's just the job of SPF, they enforce rules, not provide justice

honbhige

https://youtu.be/1vpepaQ-VQQ And better not to buy them tbh

lambokang

One of the way is they mirror the shows on their own hosted server/website that can only be accessed by the devices. However if they take down the server/website, those that bought the devices wont be able to watch anymore. Then they sell different devices with different server/website again. Double scam. Not sure how some of the others works.

mibjt

You guys still watch movies and stream?

wewdepiew

Rip iptv

CherubStyle

Google Kodi for Firestick and not need to buy one of these crappy boxes or pay for Netflix, Disney, etc. again.

GolgoMCmillan

I use a VPN and pay for Espn and another US streaming services from SG.

blazeweedm8

Sail the seven seas my sinkies

Djfernandez

Thereā€™s a right way to pirate and there is a wrong way. this is the wrong way.

ilovesupermartsg

*cough*ko*cough*ahemm*di

Idledoodledo

So he gets a slap on the wrist pay the fine and move along to open up another company until we have blacklists that will stick. Otherwise, they just open another company and rope in a fall guy.

hamiwin

Where did you see that? From the article: ā€œIf convicted, Ge faces a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to S$100,000, or both per charge.ā€ This is potentially harsher than killing a pedestrian with a car.

RevolutionaryPie5223

I wonder did he made enough money from selling the illegal devices that it's more profitable than his charges?

ironicfall

thank god
