If your follower is left to wait for 72 hours, a message will appear that the follower has grown tired of waiting and will start walking to their original location.
So, just try waiting. Keep in mind that after 72 hours is when they start walking back, and it will take some time before they are back to their original location.
This won’t work because they are not technically “waiting,” they are running against the door trying to reach the player. If you’re not on pc or using some kind of mod (on Xbox) that lets you perform actions normally done with the console, only option is to reload sadly

The op told their follower to wait, so they should be waiting, and this should work.

You can get to that open-air section between the two parts. You *should* be able to reenter the temple. Good luck
