Those are some of the main bands I landed on after finding sludge from punk. Dystopia and His Hero is Gone were my gateways. If I wanted to add another stepping stone for OP, it would be Primitive Man as well.
**Thou** - my personal favorite metal band(of any sub genre). Super heavy and dense, bone crushingly so, awesome black vocals, tons of content with lots of variety.
Fav albums: *Magus*, *Heathen*
**Indian** - Another super heavy one, this one has a lot more drone influence, and some noise. Some of the nastiest vocals I’ve ever heard.
Fav album: *From all Purity* (maybe my fav metal album of all time actually)
**Lord Mantis** - vocals that are very similar to and equally as nasty as Indian. Guitars aren’t as crushing as last two, but I find they have more variety and influence compared to Indian.
Fav albums: *Pervertor*, *Death Mask*
**Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean** - very similar to Thou(they’re named after a Thou song).
**Abominable Iron Sloth**
**Admiral Angry** - both of these bands kinda fit into the same category of sludge. High pitched screaming vocals, insane breakdowns, I find them to have a lot strong hardcore influence. Great bands.
Fav album: *Buster*
Edit: **Black Sheep Wall** is another great band like the previous two!
**Graves at Sea** - Lesser known band, only have one album I’m aware of. Pretty melodic and groovy
**Toadliquor** - my brain is tired so I don’t really have a description for these guys other than saying ‘heavy’ and ‘nasty’ again, but they have very small discography and a new album that came out earlier this year.
**Fistula** - Another band that I think has a lot more hardcore influence than others, not the heaviest but definitely one of the nastiest sounding ones here. They also have a giant discography.
Fav album: *Vermin Prolificus*
Also check out Crowbar and Acid Bath, both are classic Louisiana sludge bands from similar time as Eye Hate God. And if you’re curious about the history of Sludge check out Melvins, they’re sorta the originators.
If you like Metalcore at all I strongly recommend checking out The Acacia Strain. They have a lot of sludge influencies in their later work. *Slow Decay* and *Step Into the Light* are both solidly Metalcore albums but have a good bit of sludge influence. But even if you don’t like metalcore I’d still recommend checking out *It Comes In Waves* and *Failure Will Follow*. These are pure sludge.
Great list. Gotta add:
•Love Sex Machine (especially self-titled)
•Fange (first 3 releases)
•Ethereal Tomb (FFO Dystopia)
•Chat Pile (you’ll love em or hate em)
Hey! Both of those are excellent bands, let's see if we can hook you up with some more of those!

- Horn Of The Rhino
If that is not enough lol check my MS list since this one also comes with album recommendations -> https://metalstorm.net/users/list.php?list_id=7908
I'd recommend checking out Neurosis. They started out as a hardcore punk band and evolved their sound starting with their 3rd album, Souls at Zero. Through Silver in Blood is widely regarded as their best. Coming from a punk background, you might be able to appreciate those first 2 albums more and how they were able to evolve themselves and the metal genre.
acid bath, melvins, eyehategod, weedeater, admiral angry. those are the obvious ones! but ALSOO meth drinker, corrupted, noothgrush, grief, primitive man, cloud rat, toke, gaza, jesuit, fluoride, palehorse, nails, dead in the dirt, yautja, kowloon walled city, bummer, the tooth and of course FULL OF HELL!!!! (their new album is phenomenal btwwwðŸ¤)
Abominable Iron Sloth, Admiral Angry, Soilent Green, Leechmilk, Sofa King Killer, LLNN, Breach, Chat Pile, Gaza, Whores. If you’re into country there’s also this band called Buzzard Fight that released a country sludge album that rips
16 : Album: Drop Out, Into Dust, Bridges to Burn, Dream Squasher
Songs: 16, Ride The Waves, Me and the dog die together, Dressed Up to Get Messed Up, Sadlands, Born on a Barstool
Crowbar - The Serpent Only Lies (Album)
Buzzoven - At a loss
Melvins - 6 Songs
Kingdom of Sorrow - Behind the blackest tears
Black Tusk - Passage Through Purgatory
melvins, flipper, stick men w rayguns, dystopia, the shits, black flag my war b side, brainbombs, no trend.. also the stooges and black sabbath
punk aligned sludge (well maybe not sabbath but fuck you black sabbath)
Say you’re a punk? Got some here you would like
Black Flag (specifically the B side of My War and a few tracks off Slip it In)
Toadliquor (unbelievably tortured vocals)
Dystopia (crust punk fusion)
Chat Pile
YDI- Black Dust
Flipper- Generic Flipper (life is cheap)
Crowbar
Godflesh (controversial but they have quite a few sludge songs, mostly on the s/t ep and selfless)
plugging my buddy's old band here hailing from the Netherlands...

I’m a bit similar to you, though I came from thrash as a teenager (Sepultura, Pantera, Machine Head, etc) and have really struggled to find a band that hits as sweet a spot for me as Eyehategod and Down (though down is way chiller and more digestible). Crowbar and Acid Bath are up there too, though.
I’m a huge fan of almost all the riffage from many of the bands listed, but it’s a) got to have vocals for me to really get into and b) those vocals have to be juuust right.
I’m not big on barking / growl / Cookie Monster type vocals, but love the guttural yelling of EHG and to a bigger extent, the latter part of Pantera (especially The Great Southern Trendkill, it’s my top album of probably all time).
One band I’ve latched onto a lot that checks all the right boxes for me (based on above) is Conan. Epic and heavy af 🤘
I'm excited to be playing with two of my favorite sludge bands next week, Mares of Thrace and Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean. They're both very worth checking out.Â
The Melvins are great and they were pioneers of the genre so you gotta give em a listen. Black Flag's "My War" is pretty sludgy on side two and it was a big influence on sludge metal and grunge. Down is also pretty good from what I remember. They have Phil Anselmo from Pantera on vocals which is pretty cool. Believe it or not, Nirvana has some pretty sludgy songs on Bleach and Incesticide so I'd listen to some of their deep cuts if I were you.
I came from a similar world. Thou, Noothgrush, and Grief do it for me.
And then dystopia
Those are some of the main bands I landed on after finding sludge from punk. Dystopia and His Hero is Gone were my gateways. If I wanted to add another stepping stone for OP, it would be Primitive Man as well.
fistula too
Perfect choice 👌
**Thou** - my personal favorite metal band(of any sub genre). Super heavy and dense, bone crushingly so, awesome black vocals, tons of content with lots of variety. saw crowbar last month at philly metal fest. the vocals are absolutely insane live
Crowbar has such unique vocals too. First time I heard them I wasn’t a fan but they’ve really grown on me.
i wouldn’t say they’re my fav but they have some bangers for sure
Why won't they ever play the West Coast ðŸ˜
Lots of great picks here. I’ll especially second Abominable Iron Sloth and Admiral Angry if you’re a hardcore guy
I feel like there was another band that was real similar to those two that I liked but I can’t think of what it might be. You know of similar bands?
Leechmilk, Sofa King Killer, Gaza, and Breach come to mind. Maybe even Soilent Green
Well I know it wasn’t any of those, but hey now I some new music to check out!
Enjoy! The Leechmilk/Sofa King Killer split album is a personal favorite
I found the other band I was thing of, Black Sheep Wall!
Lord Mantis are one of my all time favorites ever
Same bro
Great list. Gotta add: •Love Sex Machine (especially self-titled) •Fange (first 3 releases) •Ethereal Tomb (FFO Dystopia) •Chat Pile (you’ll love em or hate em)
Graves at Sea~Asunder split is lit as hell
Graves At Sea is super underrated
This is an incredibly comprehensive and well manicured list. We were definitely going to be friends in 2004.
I bet 4 year old me would have loved to be your friend.. maybe I would’ve gotten into Metal a lot earlier.
I love that you have the same taste in metal as a 47y.o from California
This list pretty much sums it up completely…primitive man need to be in here too though. They’re quite literally hatred made manifest.
This is the best answer
Hey! Both of those are excellent bands, let's see if we can hook you up with some more of those! - Melvins - Neurosis - Crowbar - Grief - Soilent Green - Shrüm - Buzzov•en - Burning Witch - Bongzilla - High On Fire - Amenra - Kylesa - Black Tusk - Hark - Weedeater - Bison B.C. - Thou - KEN Mode - Zoroaster - Howl - SubRosa - Torche - Horn Of The Rhino If that is not enough lol check my MS list since this one also comes with album recommendations -> https://metalstorm.net/users/list.php?list_id=7908

-16- [Harvester of Fabrication](https://youtu.be/D7oLLWHPsN0?si=srwG_6U44unFm7Nf) Their earlier stuff is sick too. A lot more raw sounding.
Also consider giving the crust genre a go.
noothgrush, weedeater and buzzoven are pretty sick! been loving fistula lately
[Taser](https://tasersludge.bandcamp.com/music) from Finland

Just saw Ape Vermin and Mean Green last night. Both bands lean into sludge, doom, thrash, and stoner rock.
I'm excited to be playing with two of my favorite sludge bands next week, Mares of Thrace and Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean. They're both very worth checking out.Â

Iron monkey or Elecrtic wizard are both pretty dirty ;p
Melvins 💯
A bunch of bands did a cover of AICs dirt. Called dirt (redux) it's a good sample of a bunch of bands and several are sludge or adjacent anyway
Primitive Man is pretty good
Eyehategod is pretty cool, i haven't heard anyone talk about them tho
