MERTENS_GOAT

What a stupid excuse.

Expensive-Twist7984

Proper whataboutery, isn’t it? Regardless of whether footballers should be role models (probably not, but they are nonetheless for some), it doesn’t mitigate shitty behaviour. He’s said so much there when saying nothing of the sort would have been best.

TheItalianStallion64

can’t they all be good role models?

SaBe_18

I'm ok if someone isn't a role model BUT he also doesn't rape people

Banzboi

Besides the fact that this is an abysmally stupid statement… 6 years for rape just isn’t enough imo.

CoybigEL

In isolation it’s a perfectly reasonable statement albeit I personally wouldn’t advocate this or any Pope. It’s daft idolising anyone who’s character you know nothing about particularly where footballers are involved, most being assholes by every day standards

FoxExternal2911

Why is he not in prison if he was sentenced in December?

DeathStar13

That was just the first instance trial. Untill the appeal trial is completed as well he is still innocent in the law view and is allowed to go on with his life provided he isn't dangerous or at risk of leaving the country.

[deleted]

Italy

I-Shiki-I

Chop it off

samsteri666

After thinking about it for 6 years in prison, yes

Johan_UM

And make him eat it.

SanSilver

Don't judge without knowing the exact case. All we can say is hope that the judge made the right decision.

WackerBurghausen

Given that all over Europe cases on rape proceed by absolute diligence towards the culprit, you can be pretty much sure that this guy is a fucking criminal

Pillow_holder

You’ve been downvoted to hell, but your absolutely right, I’m sure if people read the sentencing remarks for the reasoning (which I haven’t tbf) people would be largely agree with them

[deleted]

Then use pictures of the Pope in your marketing materials, not the players

Lewsberg

Yeah... let's use the boss of the rapeist organization on earth.

TigerBasket

Plus, Pope Innocent literally committed a genocide lol. Popes have had a bad history. Though Francis is good

antalpoti

Which Innocent? What genocide?

TigerBasket

III, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albigensian_Crusade

fungibletokens

Don't get your role models from marketing either.

[deleted]

Not the point obviously. They're clearly putting forward the people they think represent the club best.

fungibletokens

They're putting forward the people who they think sells the most tickets and merchandise, and attracts the most 'engagement'. Marketability has nothing to do with morality.

[deleted]

I reckon there's an overlap there mate. How often do you see Partey on Arsenal's socials this year?

fungibletokens

Because he's not very marketable right now. You give corporations way too much credit. If Partey was universally popular despite the allegations, he'd be front and centre of Arsenal's marketing campaigns. But because he's bad press right now he won't sell as many tickets or shirts, or attract as many social media likes, as a relatively untainted teammate.

[deleted]

> Because he's not very marketable right now I wonder why?

fungibletokens

Because other people have morality. Arsenal as a corporate entity largely does not. See how Ronaldo remained very heavily marketed by his clubs. Tbh I'm actually astonished that I have to explain to anyone in 2023 that corporations will behave in ways which maximises their profit, and not in ways directed by moral concerns. It sounds trite to have to say it explicitly even.

[deleted]

>Because other people have morality. That's exactly my point. No one thought the clubs had morals, but they pick the players they put forward in part based on how they would be perceived by their fans. Edit: lol you've blocked me so I can't reply to your condescending shite, but go on.

fungibletokens

Yes exactly, to maximise engagement and revenue. It's connection to morality is only as strong as the audience makes it. In some cases its quite strong (Greenwood being successfully turfed out of Man Utd - at least for the time being), in other cases it is not (Ronaldo's allegations essentially having no impact on his marketability). So going back to my point - don't get your role models from marketing. And don't get your role models from those who corporations think represents them best (as was your assertion).

InbredLegoExpress

r/yesyesyesyesno

appealtoreason00

Oh, what a sensible thing to- oh fuck it’s another one of these isn’t it?

Conankun66

no to the part with the pope as well

gordonpown

what if my family is all fucked up, do I only have the Pope left?

PerfectBlueOnDVD

You know there's a fair bit of distance between a role model and a rapist. Could have just hired someone somewhere in between...

Strananach

Idiot

grishaoniani

Still remember that night at Olimpico when, Pope Guiseppe XXlllllXlllX scored a 94th min header against Young Boys. Vatican has been my fave team since then

KenHumano

All kids these days want to be just like the Pope.

BaguetteOfDoom

TheMechanic04

Perhaps Portanova's role models were priests

bigdumbidiot01

why is literally every person in a position of power just such a braindead cretin? i mean it's a rhetorical question but fuck it is GRIM

Expensive-Twist7984

But kids do look up to footballers, and they know that. No one is saying they’re not normal people (just like the other examples he’s cited), but for fuck’s sake, is it not reasonable for fans to expect players to not be scumbags?

Cules2003

Off topic, but does anyone remember Eurogoals? Used to watch that show as a kid sometimes Eurosport used to have a lot of good football, Afcon, Asian Cup, Gold Cup as well iirc

ballaman200

The Pope?

Kasj0

It's about sexual assault, but no mention of the age so close enough

corpboy

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Bad\_Popes

BehemothDeTerre

Wow, Pius XI & Pius XII don't even make the list? Most of those are less bad than the Nazi Popes.

Conankun66

aka all of them

canuck1701

No Pius IX on there?

lala_b11

As in Nick Pope

4deef

I mean he's not wrong that kids shouldn't idolize athletes but what a bullshit excuse for employing a piece of shit.

AdminEating_Dragon

The pope should not be a role model for young people either, he is the head of an organisation who routinely protects rapists and pedophiles.

BlueLabel19

Goalkeepers are footballers aswell. The disrespect to nick pope is unreal.

Wide_Challenge3880

Has he served his time in prison or is he about to go to prison?

DeathStar13

Currently appealing against the first verdict. Will go to prison if still considered guilty. The club got him after the first trial had already ended knowing he has a big chance of going to jail

Wide_Challenge3880

Thank you for the info

Wide_Challenge3880

Wow, what a mess

[deleted]

I'm sure there are good players available who don't have rape charges. Also why can't football player be a good role model? I mean look at Messi, he has a good family and social life, football GOAT yet so humble.

Azelya

Not having to be role models is fine, but they probably also shouldn't be rapists.

mike28987

Can see my opinion is gonna be unpopular but he’s right. Footballers are paid to win matches not raise children. I bet a lot of people in this group listen to Dr Dre, loved stone cold as kids and paid to watch Mike Tyson. But it’s easy to be a moral arbiter.

The-Formula

It doesn't work that way

lkc159

I mean, ignoring all the other issues with this, you still have to treat things as they are, not as they should be...

SebLestrange

I mean, he's kinda right, but he's trying to make the wrong point.

bart_pw

The pope xD LOL

PocketFullOfRondos

Well hopefully those parents and families don't want their children supporting a club that pays for rapists.

LacrimeAl94PorcoDio

Thankfully our fans' reaction stopped his transfer to Bari, otherwise this stain on society would play here

Shin_flope

I mean I can’t disagree with the guy. If you’re letting Hollywood and Sport stars be the main role model to your children then you’re not being a good parent. It’s your job to explain to them that they’re just good at kicking a ball but if you’re looking for moral values better look somewhere else

MasterfulMesut

Charles Barkley said it best...I am not a role model

ArLasadh

Right, but Charles Barkley isn’t a convicted gang rapist either… call me crazy but I think that might be the bare minimum we can expect from people employed to represent a team

MasterfulMesut

that wasnt the point i was trying to make at all lol but sure yeah run with it

ArLasadh

What was the point you were trying to make ?

MasterfulMesut

athletes arent role models

ArLasadh

Yes and that’s the point that I was responding to…

MasterfulMesut

not really lol you started comparing barkley to manolo

ArLasadh

Ya that was on purpose, I agree with Charles Barkley that sports people shouldn’t be role models (they are though regardless) but when he made the ‘not a role model’ ad he definitely did not mean it as an apologia to be used for gang rapists representing sports teams

SpeechesToScreeches

Exactly. The Pope would never hire a sex offender...

[deleted]

The Pope heads one of if not the largest pedo rings in the world. Don't use him lol

WPackN2

... the Pope? It is not like kids see Pope everyday. Also, some Pope's can't and shouldn't be a role model.

spin97

You don't live in Italy do you

hisDudeness1989

Award for worst take of all time

Cerxa

Reggiana fans have also been supportive of the signing, i believe they think 'hes not guilty until the third degree' or something like that

UselessLobotomy

the pope lol

BrewtalDoom

The Pope? Is condoning, encouraging, and covering-up child sexual abuse something a role model does?

Ffaddicted

"The Pope should be your role model, now here's a rapist. "

MasterfulMesut

The pope? LOLOLOLOL TEH POPE?????????

Fisktor

Popes usually dont mind rape either

justk4y

Is this going on the list or is this too dark?

spin97

Unpopular opinion, but I agree. Firstly, because I believe in rehabilitation over punishment, and the right to be re-integrated into society. Secondly, because a worker must be valued for how he can contribute to the job, not for what he has done in his private life. Thirdly, who the fuck does take Reggiana players as rolemodels lol

Logseman

Whaloopiloopi

Wasn't the pope like Hitler youth and worked in the department of protecting nonce's or was that the one before this one?

Suzume_Chikahisa

No. You do realize there's been a new Pope for about 10 years, right?

Whaloopiloopi

No. I don't. That's literally why I asked the question. I'm not religious and certainly not catholic and my country has made secularism illegal so excuse me for not keeping up on the staff at the Vatican.

thisiskyle77

Based comment. Ex convicts deserved a play in work force. Football is no difference.

[deleted]

The player in question is not an ex con, he hasnt served any time yet for taking part in a gang rape

thisiskyle77

If he is not charged yet , there should be less of a problem.

Suzume_Chikahisa

He has already been convicted he is just out pending appeal.

[deleted]

He has already been convicted of gang rape and then they signed him while he is appealing it. They signed a known rapist who is gonna leave the team to do prison time. Thats what you were defending

thisiskyle77

I am not defending that decision. That would be a poor buy given the club could lose their asset soon.

BrotherSeamus

He had me in the first half, not gonna lie

13blacklodgechillin

Well what if my parents, family members, and popes are all rapists too? Didn’t think of that one did he

PompeiiLegion

He had me in the first half…

brush85

There is some much right and wrong in what he said. Oy

[deleted]

I was agreeing with this(except the Pope part) then I saw what he was covering up. What a silly excuse

Major-Performer141

What kid's role model is the pope? He can't stick a volley in top bins, does he even have any England caps??

PurpleScientist4312

Guess I’ll show my kids clips of Nick Pope’s best saves

rejjie_carter

Name me one pope who wasn’t an exemplary role model, I’ll wait…

Suzume_Chikahisa

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope\_Alexander\_VI

Suzume_Chikahisa

Nice way to to abdicate of any social responsability. I wonder what kind of role model he is for his children...
