Ok. So you just refer to "Madrid" when talking about Real Madrid even tough your team name is Atletico Madrid? Genuine question, I know nothing about this. And really interested in the locals answer to this, I could see it being different if you are from the city vs. foreign fan.
I genuinely don't get foreigners' obsession with the AC part of Milan's name, it literally means football club and it's only really used in official documents
Ok thanks, interesting. My city has two teams, popular and less known (my team) and people outside the city refer to the more popular team by just the city name. I understand it but the fans of the lesser known team would NEVER do that. This is our city man lol we are not giving the name up.
on marcelo's latest interview he said he considers Atletico more of a rival than barça because the capital's climate when both teams plays is out of this world and the day to day experience too
With today's victory in the CL final, Real Madrid confirmed that next season they will compete in 7 different official competitions and will play a minimum of 53 and a maximum of 70 (or even 72) (!) matches.
- La Liga: 38 games
- Copa del Rey: 1 to 6 games
- Supercopa de Espana: 1 to 2 games
- Champions League: 8 to 15 (or 17) games
- UEFA Supercup: 1 game
- FIFA Intercontinental Cup: 1 game
- FIFA Club World Cup,: 3 to 7 games
The old CWC from before the expansion with the European team getting straight into the final afaik. Yes, the fact that both this and the new CWC are played is even more madness than the CWC expansion
[Looks to me like it s the old one with all 6 confederations rather than the even older one with just the 2 of us from this link though](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Intercontinental_Cup)
not defending the new UCL and CWC formats but this makes me think of how crazy match congestion is in brasil since 70 is kind of the norm for top teams.
17 would be in what circumstance? 15th-18th in the Swiss league have a playoff to get into the last 16 or something?
E: looked it up and this is frankly criminal:
The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the teams finishing in 9th to 24th place will compete in a two-legged knock-out phase play-off to secure their path to the last 16 of the competition.
New CL could be 17 I think? 8 groups, finish poorly in group and do play in round, then round of 16 onwards. It’s unlikely to happen to Madrid but is possible.
I think that's a good point. I feel like I barely saw Alaba play, Militao IMO is very overrated for a defender, but the Courtois loss was definitely important.
Vini being out for a while was bad too but it's not like they fielded their academy players. Props for the flexibility still.
The squad players like Brahim Diaz, Joselu, Nacho, Vazquez stepped up aswell when they needed to.
Joselu on a loan from a second league team and he scores more goals than most starting strikers.
Eh, depends on what you mean by getting close, Liverpool 2022 have only lost by one goal as well and the 2018 loss was due to Salah and Karius getting injured, Borussia today missed a lot in the first half but fell apart in the second, 2017 was probably the clearest one of them. But yeah, 92:48 was definitely the closest anyone came to beating Real in the final by the sheer lateness of the equaliser and the 2016 one was a penalty shootout so I d say you were the closest indeed
16 I genuinely think we were robbed that was the only ucl for real that I would say was truly undeserved you could argue a few controversial games (3-1 bernabou 2018, 4-2 bernabou 2017) but 2016 real had a sleeper run to the final score an offside and one oblak disasterclass later Real Madrid win ucl again
I remember watching a video about the ref of the 2016 final talking about that he regret the madrid goal and gave a "undeserved" penalty to atletico to make it even but griezmann missed it
ps: the 3-1 game against Juventus in 2018 was in bernabeu in 2nd leg, first leg was in turin with 3-0 score including the iconic CR7 bicycle kick goal
I honestly don’t remember the exact decisions and matches but there have definitely been a few suspect decisions throughout some of the runs (by the way, I am glad this season has been fairly refereeing drama-free unlike others. Still that Bayern offside call+ the two balls on the pitch attack and the time Gabriel was forgiven of a pen were weird and I do still keep in mind that PSG should never have made it through the group as that Mbappe penalty vs Newcastle was ridiculous). Mostly it s been them finding a way to win even when they were second best and their opponents failing to find their shooting boots against them which you could argue is undeserved in a way as well. Regardless, you do have to respect how they are able to keep winning even if it is getting really annoying with how often it happens…
Thank god for Atleti, else they'd have got an unbeaten treble.
Honestly something for Atleti to cheer for after what's been a mediocre season for them.
The Copa del Rey one was close. In fact I'd say we had the edge (not for much) during the 90 minutes. The problem was that we were coming from playing the Supercup against Barcelona a few days prior and Atlético was rested, the extra time didn't make us any favors.
The league one Atlético was better, that it's true. They deserved that one.
The only team that stopped Man City from winning the quadruple last season was Nathan Jones’ Southampton. We got relegated with 25 points. (Although we were weirdly good against teams in blue that season, and shit against everyone else. There was one point where we had like a 40% win rate against teams in blue, and a 0% win rate against everyone else)
One of the only high points. That and doing the double over Chelsea, and the slightly bizarre win against Palace, with Adarma scoring a very Shane Long esque goal and JWP scoring from a cross
True but Supercopa doesn't really feel like a final or a major trophy.
Genuinely, I was far more hyped for the 2-1 league win last season with Kessie's late winner than I was for winning the Supercopa.
Same when we lost as well, those Bellingham added time winners in the league hurt a lot. Supercopa, not much.
i know all the records they broke in 11/12 but surely this has to go down as their greatest ever season? (tho not gonna act like i know about their seasons before the 2000s). 95 points in the league (only 1 loss), the league and ucl double (ucl unbeaten aswell) and only 2 losses all season. their season has gone so under the radar, probably cause of leverkusen.
~~i was surprised to find out they are apparently the first team to win the whole ucl tournament unbeaten, how has someone not done that before. would’ve thought city or chelsea did it in the last few years.~~
nevermind that isn’t true, barcelona did it aswell in 05/06. thought it surely had to have been done.
yeah have now found out it’s happened i think 16 times lol which is pretty crazy. i knew it had been done but that is a lot. then again in like 70 years (and they had less matches back then).
think it’s the first time real have done it, they were mistaken
La Liga is really not as strong as it used to be, ever since COVID a lot of teams have really struggled with their finances while Madrid has remained healthy throughout. They were very impressive this season but I'd say that *at least* both the 11/12 and 16/17 seasons were better.
We could literally have the best XI of all football players in history (whatever that is) and they would still lose to Real Madrid in the CL (especially the final) at this point
>destroyed
From 95 to 2005 there's not a single CL winner I'd back to beat this Madrid side in a Champions League final, not even the Madrid winners from that period.

One denied them a perfect league without a loss, the other denied them a chance to win the triple. Atletico fans must be happy for that
I imagine Atletico fans would prefer to have actually won Copa del Ray this season.
No. It would've been fun, but we hate madrid a bit too much
Spoken like a true Atlético fan. Upvoted.
People outside Spain wildly underestimate how much you guys hate Real Madrid’s guts.
[удалено]
Atleti actually win trophies though
Not many, but we do
Truly the "little bitch" energy we have come to expect from Atleti.
Are you from Madrid actually? Do you really say hate "madrid" instead for example hate "real"? Your own team has Madrid in it too ya know.
La Real in Spain is used for Real Sociedad
Ok. So you just refer to "Madrid" when talking about Real Madrid even tough your team name is Atletico Madrid? Genuine question, I know nothing about this. And really interested in the locals answer to this, I could see it being different if you are from the city vs. foreign fan.
Yes. Same in Milan, Inter Milan fans know AC Milan is shortened to Milan, while their club's name is shorted to Inter.
I genuinely don't get foreigners' obsession with the AC part of Milan's name, it literally means football club and it's only really used in official documents

C'mon name your team

Atletico also prevented the treble in 2013/2014 when they won La liga iirc.
I blame Celta. Beat us 2-0 in the penultimate game. Guess what? They also knocked us out of Copa in 16/17 when we won the leageu and CL.
I blame Danilo
Casemiro played as CB IIRC. And he was a disaster...
I think of it more like they prevented our double :(
Real Madrid weren't even second tbf.
Crazy to think how close we came to having *two* invincible trebles in the same season
on marcelo's latest interview he said he considers Atletico more of a rival than barça because the capital's climate when both teams plays is out of this world and the day to day experience too
that'll look good in their trophy cabinet.
I hope they have room in there
Oh yes we are
Could have got 100 in the league too if they won the league games
With today's victory in the CL final, Real Madrid confirmed that next season they will compete in 7 different official competitions and will play a minimum of 53 and a maximum of 70 (or even 72) (!) matches. - La Liga: 38 games - Copa del Rey: 1 to 6 games - Supercopa de Espana: 1 to 2 games - Champions League: 8 to 15 (or 17) games - UEFA Supercup: 1 game - FIFA Intercontinental Cup: 1 game - FIFA Club World Cup,: 3 to 7 games
They'll win all of them with their A, B, U21 and U18 squad injured
What the fuck is the FIFA international cup
The old CWC from before the expansion with the European team getting straight into the final afaik. Yes, the fact that both this and the new CWC are played is even more madness than the CWC expansion
wait wtf? so old club world cup stays as well? demmm ... mental
Intercontinental is exactly like the old one. UCL winner vs Libertadores winner.
When Palmeiras played all the possible matches they could in 2021 (?) Weverton played 78 matches as a GK. In a season that started in February...
8 to 17 is possible for UCL but in Real’s case probably 15 is going to happen
17 would be in what circumstance? 15th-18th in the Swiss league have a playoff to get into the last 16 or something? E: looked it up and this is frankly criminal: The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the teams finishing in 9th to 24th place will compete in a two-legged knock-out phase play-off to secure their path to the last 16 of the competition.

Yes, thank you!
Insane.
I respect the Atlético flair posting this.
Atleti had their horrid season (Worst season in Simeone’s tenure) so I had to find something positive out of it.
Inspirational Hating
Kendrick Lamar inspired him
Hates the way that we walk, hates the way we talk. Respect it
United🤝Atleti Having your worst season in a decade but finding solace in denying your rival a trophy
Sadly Atleti didn't win it eventually unlike you won the FA Cup. Guess Atleti finishing in 4th and not 8th evens it out lol
Yeah, at least we also (arguably) stopped our Rivals from 3 as well (Liverpool from the League and Cup, City from the Cup)
I find it quite funny that Liverpool fans were talking about a quadruple season and it just ended up like a carbon copy of your 2022/2023 season
Why are you framing that like you didnt win any trophy lmao.
I mean I'd disagree. We got the real badge back that's worth more than any title for me
and that without benzema, no starting centre forward and 2 key players injured. absolutely all-time great season.
2 key players? More like 3 and a half (Alaba/Courtois/Militao plus Vini being injured for a bit).
Our first choice CB pairing and keeper. Incredible stuff from Carlo all season
And still break the record defense
Alaba and militao are a liability. Mendy, nacho, rudi and dani all the way.
I mean, you have an insanely stacked squad still.
Joselu was third highest scorer in la liga last season with a team that got relegated
I think people forget or just don’t know that Joselu won Nations League with Spain
Absurd stat to be honest. The defense must be very atrocious for that
😜
Nah Real just has bums /s
We’re fucking massive 🙏
If only you could stop them in CL finals though…if only anyone could tbh
Atleti are the only ones who’ve come close to doing it
Eh, depends on what you mean by getting close, Liverpool 2022 have only lost by one goal as well and the 2018 loss was due to Salah and Karius getting injured, Borussia today missed a lot in the first half but fell apart in the second, 2017 was probably the clearest one of them. They lost on pens to team who's goal was offside.

It's so funny that our worst team in the last 10 years is the only thing stopping Madrid from an invincible treble ffs.
And you were really convincing against us each time. Those two Ls weren’t close matches iirc
They really had yalls number this season for some reason
Fs. There was also that crazy ass 5-3 game in the Super Cup they easily could’ve won too
Of all the great coaches, Simeone is the one who got Ancelotti's number.
I think the difference is making games scrappy as all hell and having the power of rival hatred on your side lol
Its never been bout who the best, its always been bout love and hate And Atleti are the biggest haters
I love that
Hate fuels them against us lol it’s always a tough game
The Copa del Rey one was close. In fact I'd say we had the edge (not for much) during the 90 minutes. Fingers crossed we might have more to cheer about this season than in 22/23! Although no South Coast Derby is a kick in the teeth.
Cholo effect
You sure Bilbao wouldn't slap us 4-0? Because I can see it happening in Copa.
In a final? Zero chance.
We lost supercopa before.
True but Supercopa doesn't really feel like a final or a major trophy. Nah, Athletic Club always gives us and Barcelona a rough game but I feel like they usually concede to you within 15 mins lol
I remember that Barça almost got an unbeaten Liga sweep but lost to Athletico Madrid
i know all the records they broke in 11/12 but surely this has to go down as their greatest ever season? City just done it last year, so does Bayern two seasons prior. It's really not that rare I suppose
Difference is that Bayern won every game. That is rare, because it only happened once.
yeah have now found out it’s happened i think 16 times lol which is pretty crazy. i knew it had been done but that is a lot. then again in like 70 years (and they had less matches back then). think it’s the first time real have done it, they were mistaken

invincible treble would have been a legendary season, gotta give it up to atletico, this is some high quality hater shit.
Simeone turns into prime Pep with the IQ of Einstein against Madrid.
"But they are so lucky"
Atletico had our number this season
Without atleti they would have done a treble and invincibles season. Gracies atleti. The last hope of football.
That's a solid record
The only good thing about Atleti's season. Atleast I can be happy about 1 thing
Those bastards😭
[удалено]
Real won two UCL Finals against Atleti (both in painful fashion) and knocked Atleti out of the competition for four years consecutively (13-14-16/17).
in 4 UCL final for Courtouis, he got 3 clean sheets with Real Madrid and gave away 4 goals vs Real Madrid
IIRC he's played only 3 finals
Damn u a real one
Nah, especially since Madrid won 2 UCL finals against him.
Not even close lol
I would say he his mostly Carlo's kryptonite
He has 12 wins out of 43 against Real Madrid and has been cuked in the final, "cryptonite"
Still has best record out of all probably
Depending on sample size, no he doesn't, many Barcelona managers have better records Pep has more wins in half the matches
Lol sure that's why Pateti has 2 UCLs right?
There was a spell where Simeone and Atlético beat everyone but their only losses came to Real Madrid which has to be heartbreaking
one of the best Real Madrid teams of all time which is a shock because nobody expected this at the beginning of the season
It's the black magic, they played worst in many of those games. It's all about the black magic
am i dreaming or did they win CdR?? 🤨 edit: i’m dumb they were eliminated in CdR by Atleti LOL
No, Atleti knocked Real out in the RO16 and Athletic Club won it all. Real won it last season and will probably win next season.
yep i got that lol, i initially thought the two losses were both in La Liga. yes i’m not very bright 😭
Last season no? Wasn't it their only trophy as well?
the post says 23/24 season or am i missing something here
They won the Copa in 22/23
We don't even have a striker!
Put some respect on Joselu's name. This narrative is very disrespectful to him.
Not disrespecting but he barely played half the games
Atletico stopped us from going invincible and winning the treble. What a great season from us.
crazy
unreal stuff
What an “under dog” story.
Boring. Football 2024 in a nutshell.
But does Madrid count as an away game?
Best in the world. Second best in town.
Very good ingeniero Manuel Pellegrini !!
Flair checks out
Terrorists confirmed best team in the world.... wait.

Up until 2020 id say
