These sorts of misses happen. Mbappe had one too today. What's important is having the players who regularly get these chances and play in a way that can allow you to create enough chances that you score despite the misses.
lol what is everyone on about? This opening was created by an exceptional run from Mainoo, an exceptional pass from Gordon and an exceptional flick from Mainoo. The subsequrnt run, pass and shot from Kane and Palmer was the kind of basic shit we've been seeing all week.
He was literally 30 yards from goal when Kane passed to him. If he'd anticipated the Gordon pass and sprinted forward he'd have been 1-1 with the keeper.
Palmer hit a good few line breaking passes too. If Southgate has some eyes he'll play these two from the start along with Mainoo. Can see it changing the mood of this team and giving them a shot at going deep.
I think he must still be playing with the injury he was supposedly playing with at the back end of the season, it's not even that he won't take players on, he wont even run in behind off the ball. Either way he shouldn't be starting the next game, he just looks done in
Saka was the only winger that took the Defenders in the Last 2 Game
Laughably better is bit too much he played 10 minutes against tired Legs and still missed best of chance of the game by shooting straight to keeper
Was looking for this, FFS I hope they start Palmer jus so certain parts of the fanbase can see. Saka worked that area all game, had defenders piling on him.
He was even called out for being offside for the goal when it was Foden.
Palmer brings a dimension that Saka doesn't. Saka has become one dimensional but he's still very good at that action, dribbling and creating openings by the edge/ right side of the box.
Palmer can take on players too but he receives the ball in more positions and can make excellent passes from deeper and out wide than keep defenders off kilter. His link up opens up more of England's attacking players.
Part of the reason saka has struggled has been the complete absence of a left wing, meaning all the teams have had the luxury of piling their defenders on the centre and right
If Saka took on defenders this game I must have missed it because I don't remember that happening at all. Yeah Palmer did fluff a chance but did Saka have a single shot the whole game? Palmer looked so dangerous every time he got the ball. I love watching Saka when he's on it but he's just not himself rn.
Edit: I missed the game from minute 15-20 and missed Saka's disallowed goal my apologies 🙏
> but did Saka gave a single shot the whole game
Mate, he was the only player on the pitch to put the ball in the back of the net... It's not his fault Foden was offside in the build-up.
His fullback partner can't play a simple pass his way without over or underhitting it and the rest of the attacking lineup is essentially trying to play in the same area of the pitch without anyone making runs in to the box.
Palmer showed that you can understand the game and change up your method of attack. Granted coming on against tired legs was also a factor but he was able to link up with Kane and Bellingham much better than we've seen from Saka.
This is just insanity. He has consistently been England’s best player for a few years now and often the one guy that looks like he’s trying to do something. You don’t drop him because of an average 20 minute cameo. The left side of the attack is the issue.
It’s absolutely absurd to watch Saka get slated now and talked about needing to be dropped for like 1 off game while Kane lumbers around, Foden barely contributes, Walker misplaces passes left and right, and Bellingham needlessly runs around. Honestly kind of hope he gets dropped so he can get some well needed rest in. Go join Ben White on the beach.
Would be ecstatic if he was dropped on the basis of resting him. He's been quality for years now that I'll agree on. But right now Cole Palmer is a more dangerous and in form option and should start. You don't pick your team on how good he was months ago. If he's not in form or tired then drop him for the benefit of the team.
He's being instructed to start centrally for some reason, basically the opposite of what he does at Arsenal. At Arsenal, he starts wide, drags the fullback out, then cuts in with the ball or moves towards the byline.
For England he's sometimes receiving the ball inside the penalty-area width. Leaving him with absolutely no space to work with. I don't for a second believe that Saka would just do this on his own, so I'm inclined to believe it's instruction, and I really don't get it.
The reason Bowen and Palmer have "looked dangerous" (for the record, I don't think Palmer did much today, Bowen looked more exciting), is that they actually stay wide and receive the ball wide. It's also significantly easier to look better when you're fresh off the bench against a fullback that's just done 75 mins of defending, but that's not even really the point.
Palmer played some great line breaking passes from deeper in the right channel and just in general has a more well rounded game. He's got the vision of a 10 but can take on players like a wide player.
I must be going mad but...what performance? Like honestly, the bar must be on the floor. I'm pretty sure he lost the ball on every dribble attempt and made like 2 half-decent passes.
Difference between Gordon on the wing and Foden on the wing. Foden cuts in just to pass it back to Rice, Gordon cuts in trying to play a pass. Just bench Foden and field a proper team fgs
Kane also hit the ball straight at the keeper but he didn't receive endless media blowjobs in return.
Palmer had a good cameo and I agree he should start ahead of Sake but let's keep things in perspective.
The problem wasn't the shot. Palmer stayed wide for far too long and was very late to the pass. Scoring opportunity basically closed by the time he got there.
I expected him to cut in and take a touch or two before shooting. Think an in rhythm Palmer scores this, but can't really blame him considering these were his first competitive minutes in a long time.
He should have hit that better, but Kane did him no favours either with that weak pass. Should have either flicked it back to Mainoo or used it himself.
I've seen him do this a couple of times now. He really likes to curl it into the corner from there but sometimes he just doesn't quite wrap his foot around it. I don't know if it's a technical flaw or a mental block but it's basically the only time I see him miss
I like how people talk trash about Ronaldo scoring goals against "easier teams" (in theory) ... And then England golden generation does this.
I mean... How easy is it then?
It was just an example... It's not about this team in particular.
What I'm saying is that people talk shit about scoring against (in theory) small or easier teams.
But then a team like England don't score a goal.
As much as I want to see change in this team, it's pretty funny that people are clinging SO hard to Gordon and Palmer's cameos when realistically mostly anyone they had would have looked decent in a stretched game with 5 minutes left

Shooting on goal? Can't do that mate back to the bench

right. Palmer was the least responsible for that play
He was literally 30 yards from goal when Kane passed to him. If he'd anticipated the Gordon pass and sprinted forward he'd have been 1-1 with the keeper.
Gordon needed to be on 89 minutes before that, can't get through the midfield all game then he comes on and passes straight through the whole thing
Also Gordon goes balls to the wall and often tires himself out 60+ mins on. Which is a great opportunity to put Foden or Palmer on It's perfect
Palmer hit a good few line breaking passes too. If Southgate has some eyes he'll play these two from the start along with Mainoo. Can see it changing the mood of this team and giving them a shot at going deep.
"Kalvin Phillips would've finished that" – Southgate, probably
Hey Gareth you prick maybe Gordon and Palmer need more than 20 mins
You mean bringing on your most explosive winger with 2 minutes to go isn't a tactical masterclass?
Palmer was miles better than Saka. Saka seems to have forgotten that he's Saka. Don't think he took on a defender a single time the whole game
I think he must still be playing with the injury he was supposedly playing with at the back end of the season, it's not even that he won't take players on, he wont even run in behind off the ball. Either way he shouldn't be starting the next game, he just looks done in
Eh? He was in behind all the time Vs Serbia. Pretty hard to run in behind 2 parked buses.
He ran his ass off vs Denmark.
Yeah wouldn't surprise me. Watch him start the next game(s) regardless. Fuck me England are frustrating 🤦
Next starting lineup will be the same as today's except Mainoo will replace Gallagher.
And will be subbed off at half time for Wharton
Wouldn’t mind that tbh
pain.

Yeah that legit happened in a 5 minute span I had to go out lol. Only found out about it this morning
This is a laughably bad take.
His fullback partner can't play a simple pass his way without over or underhitting it and the rest of the attacking lineup is essentially trying to play in the same area of the pitch without anyone making runs in to the box.

Saka was playing like Doku was in game one. Getting the ball, doing some moves, but slowing the game down completely
Gordon will get a reprimand for making such a risky pass
Max I can give you is 7 minutes, take it or leave it. Also, score.
Maybe they should, but this shot isn't exactly an argument to put Palmer in.
good job the rest of his performance is
I must be going mad but...what performance? Like honestly, the bar must be on the floor. I'm pretty sure he lost the ball on every dribble attempt and made like 2 half-decent passes.
That’s 2 more than anyone else
Imagine if every manager was that reactionary
Yeah another pass right into the keeper would’ve had Slovenia on the ropes
as opposed to saka passing it 50 meters backwards instead
Was that Gordon with the line breaking pass? Kane should've slipped it back to Mainoo
Mainoo doing what we hoped Bellingham would. Dude needs a rest
Difference between Gordon on the wing and Foden on the wing. Foden cuts in just to pass it back to Rice, Gordon cuts in trying to play a pass. Just bench Foden and field a proper team fgs
mainoo making things happen. What a poor performance by England overall
I love Mainoo
Mainoo has to start the next match.
BUILD THE STATUE, WE HAVE A SHOT ON GOAL BOYS!
i thought he will pass back to mainoo
He should have. That would have been so sexy
Lmao “shot on goal”
At least he tried.
Kane also hit the ball straight at the keeper but he didn't receive endless media blowjobs in return. Palmer had a good cameo and I agree he should start ahead of Sake but let's keep things in perspective.
Crap pass by Kane tbf

Kobs
Timid effort
Instant impact
A thing happened!!!
Is this really worthy of its own post?
It is was the best chance of the entire game
Says a lot about the game.
Nah was the cross to kane
It's a great post with the added context that looking for highlights posted from this game, this and a Saka offside goal are the only ones
crazy what a difference it makes when Mainoo is in the team.
Kane shouldn’t have passed, and he shouldn’t have underhit the pass either. Shit shot tho
Probably could have returned it to Mainoo who was in. Asking alot of Palmer to score against Oblak from there
Yep I thought this. He could of taken a touch forward into the box
He needed to curl it to the far post
He tried but didn't catch it well.
On a normal day I reckon he takes a touch to jink inside the rushing defenders and gets a better shot off to the far corner.
He should have hit that better, but Kane did him no favours either with that weak pass. Should have either flicked it back to Mainoo or used it himself.
Mainoo looks so good here
Pass to the keeper
So, why is this worthy of a post?
This is not a highlight
From this game it is.
It's the only thing that happened.
Literally the only incisive bit of football the entire second half. Embarrassing from such a talented group of players.
Highlight of the game
All of the highlights actually.
Bollocks innit
Kane should have taken the shot
Cole Palmer Great Pass to Goal
Honestly kane more at fault completely ruined the chance that gordan and kobbie goat mainoo made for him
Kanes half hearted flick game him no angle to work with what so ever
So many blown chances, damn
What chances?
Chances to turn off the TV
Pass on goal
Playing for England must fucking suck. These guys seem like they wish they were at home.
(Great Pass)
I've seen him do this a couple of times now. He really likes to curl it into the corner from there but sometimes he just doesn't quite wrap his foot around it. I don't know if it's a technical flaw or a mental block but it's basically the only time I see him miss
We did 68 takes and that was our best one
Foden has been Guardiola’d unfortunately. Gordon isn’t afraid to run with the ball and ‘gasp’ perhaps not recycle it
Why does Kane play that so early? Leaves it with Palmer having too much to do.
that's why he sits on the bench
he's been our best player since he came on hahaha
I like how people talk trash about Ronaldo scoring goals against "easier teams" (in theory) ... And then England golden generation does this. I mean... How easy is it then?
I mean Ronaldo has never scored against them either not to mention last time they played Portugal got beat 2-0. Not a great argument.
