obligedpapayah

What a save at the end

floridali

That was incredible

Thorlolita

They have never played a euro game that wasn’t competently mental.

shrek_kerhs

2021 group stage... or do you count that

Thorlolita

No because I’m on a high now just remincising over 2008 and today

shrek_kerhs

That's a valid point

Caged_Rage_

Lol

DogusEUW

They were on the field but I wouldn't consider that "playing" tbf

AK1441

We don't remember 2021, that never happened.

Croattt

Don’t remind me.

CroKingz

The Italy game reminded me of that horrible Turkey game and now I see this shit

Evil_Henchmen

Having ptsd every time someone mentions 2008 in any context

Toni253

The PTSD will never disappear

Motorheade

Thought you guys got over it after 3-0'ing us in 2012 playoffs?

mmohammed28

And what a classic that was, 13 year old me became a Semih Senturk lifer that night

Martblni

Volcan Demirel for me, cool name and looked like a gigachad

bishey3

His name literally translates to Volcano Ironhand. It's impossible to not be badass with that name lol...

UtkuOfficial

Literally an Icelandic Viking name.

anotverygoodwritter

Is he a fucking chaos dwarf?

KingAnumaril

Nah, Kurgan Chaos Lord like Asavar Kul

powergs

His nickname was bear lol. Dude was in center of all action in derbies like 10+ years (he was pretty good gk too)

LegendDwarf

Volkan against Galatasaray was always a beast. Tamed by Sneijder for 1 game though, 2 amazing goals by him, at that time Sneijder was also a different breed. I'll always remember Sabri pinching Volkan's nape LMAO it is so funny to this day [this photo](https://imgur.com/a/NlzJyFs)

ssgtgriggs

how have I never seen this, this is fantastic 😂😂

Hic_Forum_Est

I was 10 years old back then. Whenever we played football on the community pitch, my friends and I would always pretend to play as the stars of that era. I would always choose Ronaldo, Klose, Schweinsteiger or Rooney. During and after the 2008 Euros my turkish friends would always choose Senturk. They worshipped him like a god.

BusquetsNGravy

Even their game vs czech republic to get out of that group was nuts. Kahveci for 2-2 off of a petr cech drop then 3-2. Memories

24benson

I think they were ahead in all games combined for a grand total of like 10 minutes and still almost made the final

BusquetsNGravy

Even gave germany a go

Corteaux81

Which game? I’m sorry you have it wrong, the 2008 EURO was canceled after group stage. Shame too, we Croatians had a really good team, won the group with 9 points, beat Germany, etc. Oh well…

whyborg

I was hugging with absolute strangers screaming that night

turkishguy

Talk about a name I haven’t heard in a while

ShanklyGates_2022

Pretty sure that match was when it was 0-0- all the way until Croatia scored in the 119th minute and then Turkey scored in the 120th. Was wild

Fresh2Desh

I wish I was in Istanbul right now, can only imagine how mental it would be right now

Tr_Omer

Its the same vibes all over Germany too haha

Select-Stuff9716

Probably pretty tame compared to the big cities in Germany rn

lunacraz

i’m in izmir visiting it’s almost 1am and cars will not stop honking their horns

Groomsi

Turks moved to Germany for the EC, Istanbul is empty.

fake_lightbringer

Fan zone in Berlin was mental enough. Can't imagine Istanbul rn

Caged_Rage_

Crazy here

Jude_Linton

That win against Croatia in 2008 was in Vienna. There’s something about Austria that bring Türkiye luck lol

Vtmasquerade

Oh yes Vienna. City that famously brings luck to Turkish.

I_Hate_Traffic

Too soon

GeraldBot

you win some, you lose some.

fleaudedieu

historically accurate

fenasi_kerim

Almost had it that one time.

Dom_Shady

Even twice: 1529 and 1683.

UtkuOfficial

Turkish fans 16/83

ssgtgriggs

we would've won too if it weren't for those darn Poles

interfan1999

Montella masterclass Can we swap coach?

Baybam1

We want him gone so yes

Alarming_Appeal_8938

We want him gone? Are you crazy?

DoNotGiveEAmoneyPLS

Do you seriously like his football? Look at our wins. 2 wonder goals. 2 goals from corner kicks. Amazing saves from Mert. Shit football against 10 men Czechia and barely winning it. Barely against 10 fucking men for 70 minutes. That's all. The guy was lucky as fuck with shit tactics.

Alarming_Appeal_8938

You can’t get this far with luck alone. He’s not perfect, but who do you want? Back to Fatih terim? Senol Gunes? It’s first time we’ve been in Knock-outs since 2008 ffs

dodgythreesome

Let’s get the Austrian guy here, his team preformed great

tt_emrah

as a famous philosopher once said: finito giocare, resultante importante.

Hllknk

We? Who's we?

ssgtgriggs

Ragnick is known as one of the best OG tacticians in the history of the sport and completely changed the game with his game theory and influenced an entire generation of star coaches, and Montella completely outcoached him yesterday, wtf are you on lmao

Ok_Anybody_8307

I would not say outcoached. Any one that watched the game would tell you luck had a lot to do with it. A goalkeeping error, and a wonderful save on Gunok's part. Do not suddenly start calling Montella the Messiah after having called for his head as late as the 2nd group game so that the team could pull a "Ivory Coast"

ssgtgriggs

it was very close, obviously, but I would say he outcoached Ragnick. Austria are great at pressing high and they bloom against teams who are actually willing to engage them. Turkeys (Montellas) decision to play a low 5-5-0 in the second half exploited their one weakness. This is pretty much a repeat of Galatasaray vs Copenhagen in the CL last season. GS are also playing a high gegenpressing style and we were totally helpless against them when they just parked the bus and scored from standards. Betting on Austria lacking the finesse of a Spain to crack a well fortified defense is smart. I'm not calling him anything, I'm just saying he read Austria well, designed his strategy accordingly and shaped a team that was capable of following his game plan. That's a more than competent coach.

oberynMelonLord

meanwhile, Austria's last knockout win at a major tournament was in 1954.

Dom_Shady

That's an even crazier stat!

cib_vk228

After that game, no late equaliser versus Albania and Italy can't hurt me.

Educational_Ad2737

I’m supposed to support England but gul it ima Turkey supporter from now on

cruyfff

That photo is epic. If I was Turkish I'd hang that on my wall

Tro-merl

So Merih Demiral was playing when we also lost to Netherlands 6-1 in 2021...You think he can do it again against dutch?

PeterMurrellTrapgod

I think this Turkey team are honestly capable of anything. So exciting to watch. Austria gave the Netherlands a hard game, I really think Turkey may shock the Dutch

yekawda

As a turkish, lets not overhype it by saying "capable of anything".

PeterMurrellTrapgod

yekawda

Tesekkurler

nutelamitbutter

Merih Demiral

JaysonDeflatum

No longer the fraudulent dark horses.

Snoo-27292

Now the question is, are the Netherlands hungry enough to eat the Dark Horse?

Stalin_K

COME TO BESIKTAS 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷

turhalian

Everyone is welcomed here

Archealant

We either have total shitshow or banger tournament. There is no mediocricy.

06-11-2002

Insane stat lol

HoboSkid

Austria left it all out there, but man Turkiye still making runs at the end to try and ice it was wild. Amazing game all around. Great job Turkiye!!

Velascus

I was going to say that they must have won some knockout games that time they went to the WC semis, but then my blind ass saw the "EC" part of the subject. Kind of surprised that team didn't win a European knockout round with that "golden generation" team, that was a solid packing generation they had around 2002.

lordposedyon

Gegenpress that

jay_-

Also first win in a knockout game in 16 years. What a game, what a team. Congratulations Turkey.

thecarlosdanger1

Shoulda changed their name years ago clearly

sault9

It is nearly 1 AM here in Köln and the honking is still going strong

Economy-Ad-4777

swear there are no turks left in turkey

Ronaldinho94

2008 and that Czech game and Nihat goal... Never forgetting.

Renegadeforever2024

Lol

Bernitss

As a Mexican, having seen my NT never reach a WC quarterfinal game, this is massive

Daki399

Amazing job for Turkey but that would have been way harder if it was Netherlands or France , crazy how Austria still got 1st seed in that death group . They are good but they are rival Turkey can beat

Raptordude11

Fuck off

Optimus_7

As a Croatian reading that last sentence, it still hurts

supplementarytables

Dark horses no more?

ramtbb

This Turkiye shit gotta stop. Why are they the only team called in their native language?

Ramirez_47

>on 31 May 2022, requesting that they use Türkiye. The UN agreed and implemented the name change Probably something to do with that

brush85

Skill issue

xenon2456

they changed the English name like last year I think

ThisIsJustAGuy_

Turkey officially changed it’s name at UN to Türkiye

LifeYogurtcloset4391

Why do english speakers butcher countries' names if they are capable of spelling them correctly.

teabagmoustache

Yeah, why is it always the İngilizce who butcher other countries names?

UtkuOfficial

Because for some reason the Europeans gave us the name of an animal.

teabagmoustache

Literally the other way around. They named the bird after the country, because it resembled another bird, which originated in the same region.

UtkuOfficial

Ok, still a dumbass reason don't you think?

Biltema

We call it Hindi in Turkish, and we call spices Baharat...which is what what their country is called in basically all Indian languages. I guess India should force us change the name of those things?

teabagmoustache

To name a bird after another similar bird? Not really. Both birds were named after the region. The region of today's Türkiye, was named after the Turkik Empire of the 6th century. Not a bird.

vidoeiro

Just in english, because its the same name as an animal and the dictator was getting fed up with it.

Odd-Low-4161

Its the only thing i ever supported erdogan for

kuronekotango

love the anglophone salt.

SGT_Mark

It sounds so dumb

a_m_k2018

No idea

iwanttodiepls_

they don’t even belong to europe xddd

YoSh_BoIi

Georgia belongs tho right xddd

kuronekotango
