Tbf the weather in the US is such a mess now that the NW cities like Portland and Seattle had days over 110 degrees in June last year. This year it has been the wettest summer on record.
I'm just hoping for no west coast fires
Car read 105° multiple times today. 5:00 right now and it's 98° feels like 105° and summer just started...
Edit- Shockingly low humidity at 40% according to my weather app. Generally 80% is a gracious low for us
Man, people from the UK seem to love Miami and Vegas. I think they never get heat like that back home, so they love those spots for their holidays. But yeah, it will be something different to play in those conditions at the peak of summer. Tilts things slightly in favor of the American and African nations who often play in that type of heat.
Norway is definitely not as cold as people think. Norway does have mild winters, but they’ve never had 40°C summers like some places regularly do in USA/Mexico.
I suspect that matches in Texas, Mexico and Los Angeles will be in the night slots, with the New England, Seattle-SF and Canadian venues getting the midday ones.
That same elevation is going to cause havok on cardio. I am either going to bet under total points or against any team that doesn't arrive like a month before.
USA
Atlanta - Mercedes-Benz Stadium (71,000)
Boston - Gillette Stadium (65,878)
Dallas - AT&T Stadium (80,000)
Houston - NRG Stadium (72,220)
Kansas City - Arrowhead Stadium (76,416)
Los Angeles - SoFi Stadium (70,000)
Miami - Hard Rock Stadium (65,326)
New York/New Jersey - MetLife Stadium (82,500)
Philadelphia - Lincoln Financial Field (67,594)
San Francisco/Bay Area - Levi's Stadium (68,500)
Seattle - Lumen Field (72,000)
Canada
Toronto - BMO Field (30,000)
Vancouver - BC Place (54,500)
Mexico
Guadalajara - Estadio Akron (46,355)
Mexico City - Estadio Azteca (87,523)
Monterrey - Estadio BBVA (51,000)
For those that are wondering, these are mostly NFL stadiums.
I think a lot of these stadiums are going to have expanded capacities when the World Cup rolls around. I think SoFi isn't just 70k, it could be 100,000 even.
I wonder if they will allow standing room.
BMO (Toronto) will be adding 15,000 or so seats as well… could be more - they’ve already got the expansion as part of the bid, as well as overhauled hospitality and media areas - if they follow the bid plans it will be a fairly new stadium by the time it’s done
Canada and Mexico are getting 10 matches apiece. The U.S. is getting 60, including all the matches past the first round of knockouts (quarter finals onwards).
Toronto and Vancouver will both host a group of three teams (four matches there) plus a first round knock out match. That makes ten.
Vancouver is also getting five pre-tournament exhibition matches. I don't know how many Toronto will get.
They're not!
Seriously, three team groups will ruin the tournament. [https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/26/upshot/world-cup-fifa-collusion-readers.html](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/26/upshot/world-cup-fifa-collusion-readers.html)
They could fix it but we will see.
Genuinely hilarious that we're going from a World Cup taking place in an area the size of a large city to a World Cup across an entire continent.
This looks hideously expensive if you end up following your team through the tournament
When FIFA announced the cities they mentioned regions. I assume this means the group stage will be split into respective regions and possibly even the early knockout rounds. Like group A in TX, GA, FL, group B in NY, Philly, NE etc etc. That way fans can follow their country and minimize travel nightmares.
>
> This looks hideously expensive if you end up following your team through the tournament
To be fair following a team through a World Cup is insanely expensive regardless of geography.
Mexico could play in the moon and you’d find Mexicans in the stands.
Wherever Mexico plays in the US they will fill up the stands. This is such a convenient WC for Mexican fans.
As a whole, yeah! As an individual fan, nah. It’s hard enough to get tickets to our matches half way around the world. Now you’re battling people that don’t have to travel over two countries AND the ones who were always going to follow the team. The pregame will be next level, getting in the door will be the hardest ticket if you don’t get them from FIFA.
[Arizona removed themselves same with Chicago and the Twin Cities](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/soccer/2018/03/15/chicago-minneapolis-arizona-fifa-world-cup-bid/430939002/)
Best football city in the country rn, along with Seattle and LA.
The stadium is absolutely amazing, there are loads of football fans, and the vibe around downtown/midtown is just great when games are on.
On that note San Francisco shouldnt have gotten a game at all. No offense, but Levi's Stadium is a mess that is way too far from the main city. Would have rather had one in Nashville or New Orleans. Super fun cities and the stadium in Nashville is right in downtown.
My city gets gridlocked by things like "two sporting events at the same time" and "a truck full of salmon crashing." This is going to be such a shitshow. ^when ^do ^tickets ^go ^on ^sale?
Unrelated to traffic, but definitely related to salmon; the time a couple years ago when a block or 2 around SLU lost power because an egal dropped a salmon and it landed on some power lines, blowing up a transformer 😅
Can I interest you in a trip to San Francisco? And by San Francisco I mean a random parking lot an hour south surrounded by strip malls and suburban houses? Truly oozing history and character. It will be a trip that your wallet will never forget.
Or a trip to Dallas? And by Dallas I mean a parking lot 30 minutes west next to six flags where you get to pay Jerry Jones $50 for parking. (Probably $100 by the time we get to 2026)
SF almost certainly won’t even be “hosting” by having teams in hotels either, for the Superbowl at Levi’s one team stayed in San Jose and one in Santa Clara. There probably will still be a festival and/or celebrations of some kind in SF
Lmao I can't even imagine how expensive these tickets are going to be... Honestly doesn't matter because people will buy them at any price. FIFA knows this. They are going to milk this.
Yeah TIL my city is central? Strange choice.
EDIT: Some advice for any foreign tourists planning on visiting Atlanta for the WC, make sure you go to Waffle House at 3AM, but only go at 3AM while drunk. Just trust me.
From 1967 until 2001, the NFL thought [Atlanta was in the *west.*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFC_West#Division_lineups)
It's also not that crazy an idea. Atlanta is as far west as Cincinnati, and further west than Detroit. Culturally, Atlanta is definitely more eastern than either of those cities, but geographically, calling Atlanta "central" isn't inaccurate.
Also that Dallas is in the east.
Also, for a time, that Charlotte was also in the west.
Perhaps the NFL's geographers played a few too many snaps, if you know what I mean.
Those are some random ass celebrities they chose representing the cities. Now when I think of New Jersey I will no longer think of Tony Soprano or Bruce Springsteen, I will think of Brian Williams
Also, sorry Drake. It's officially John Tory SZN
Yeah, but Drew has been a minority owner of the Sounders for a while, and he has used his public appearances to grow the game for a long, long time. He's been a fantastic ambassador for MLS.
Other names come to mind when I think of Seattle and the Sounders, but when I think of Drew Carey in a soccer context it's all Seattle.
Um...there is a lot more than that (I knew it would be Mahomes but even Paul Rudd would have been cool).
Surprised Tech N9Ne wasn't on the video but he'll probably be everywhere else
Dallas resident, here! Welcome!
You may be asking “okay so the host city is Dallas, where will they be playing?” The answer, is Arlington.
“Oh cool, those must be close, right?” No, not really.
“No sweat, I’m sure I can just take public transportation from Dallas to the match.” Competent public transportation is an affront to god here in the Lone Star State. Enjoy the Uber surcharge!
“Jeez. I guess I’ll just have to drown my sorrows in alcohol at the stadium.” Well, Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys will introduce you to $30 margaritas and $60 parking. Start saving now.
You’ll love the barbecue though!
Compare this to Houston. Train line from downtown directly to football stadium. Hotels in every direction. Amazing international food. I honestly don't know why they gave it to two Texas cities but the easier one to have an event like this would have been Houston.
Washington has already put up $150 million towards planning, but there's not much else that can be done before 2026. Maybe we could fund some more Amtrak trains during the tournament.
Word of early warning - a lot of these NFL stadiums are built way out in the suburbs and not downtown. Hence why there are descriptors like "New York/New Jersey" or "San Francisco Bay Area".
Philly will be great for that, in case any future tourists are wondering. Not “central” but also not an hour out in the suburbs, and there’s transit to the stadium from the touristy areas
There is no city in the US that is going to be a for-the-people party destination during the WC more than Philly. And God forbid they get the US to play there; they’ll be greasing light poles on Broad Street.
Same here, also, Minneapolis' stadium is right downtown, and would have been another "walkable" venue for attendees. So many of these stadiums are embarrassingly annoying to get to.
If you want to experience the New England experience, that being stranded in a suburb of Boston surrounded by drunk frat boys who also have 6-figure internships in biotech all waiting in a Market Basket parking lot for a shuttle to get back to a 300 year old church downtown that’s now the train stop with the worst dunkin in the world that you will still get a coffee from because sometimes it hits different at 1 am, you should book a ticket to Logan now.
Philadelphia: it's the 250th anniversary of the signing of the declaration of independence, creating the country. Lot of fun stuff gonna happen that entire summer. A very underrated city. Great food. Easily walkable and does not require a car (there is a subway line directly to the stadium). Diverse. Weird.
Nyc isn't played in NYC proper so you can enjoy the city without the full force of the tourist population cause by the WC and go to the game via bus from the city.
Also probably the cheapest city to visit (maybe Guadalajara), most historic stadium in the WC, and among the best atmospheres.
To be honest I think this is going to be a great WC to go to, there are so many options and cool cities to visit.
Philly will be one of the easier stadiums to get to for a tourist. A lot of these stadiums don’t have good mass transit directly to them. Philly has 3 stadiums’ worth of infrastructure in one place
You should go to Seattle/Vancouver! Seattle is like a soccer capital and there's easy public transport between both citees via amtrak and both cites are directly connected from the airport to their stadiums by light rail/trains.
Come to Vancouver especially. You can get from the beach to the mountain using public transit. And if you don’t want overpriced concessions, Costco and liquor stores are down the block from the venue.
maaaan, i’m so disappointed that DC/Baltimore wasn’t chosen but i’m used to being overshadowed by the bigger cities on the east coast lol. at the same time though, idgaf—it’s the world cup! i’ll travel if need be; it’s my dream to see a WC match 😭
Why do i submit myself to these FIFA Shows all the time when they are cringe and embarrasing?
When was the last time the main host nation did not have the capital city on the host cities?
Tokyo was not in 2002 and neither was Stockholm in 1958 but i don't remember others
[At least 7 major injuries just in one end of the field](https://i1.wp.com/www.sopitas.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/lesiones-campo-washington-football-team.jpeg)
Has there been any talk about how people will get to some of these stadiums? Because some like Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City are super far from the city center and have basically no proper mass transit system.
New Jersey does, and assuming you stay in NYC weed is about to become legal there too.
Decent chance it's legalized nationally by then, it's popular and makes a ton of money. It's also increasingly impossible to try to control when it's legal in so much of the country.
We’re talking about a governing body that chose to put a World Cup in Qatar….I can assure you no thought went into it beyond the city/metro and size of the venue
Lol Tickets gonna legit cost a grand minimum.
Time to save up, that’s only about 200 avocado toasts or Starbucks trips I need to avoid
I doubt it. The problem is it’s a lottery so the odds of actually getting tickets aren’t great.
If it’s lottery especially, there’s a resell culture in the USA
Can’t re-sell World Cup tickets, they’re tied to your FIFA ID
You can re-sell them, but only through FIFA's ticketing platform and I believe only at specific times.
And price capped, no? Could be wrong on that, I’ve never tried to re-sell.
When I had to re-sell my Brazil 2014 tickets you have to sell at face value.
Can't wait for Norway to qualify and play in Houston in the summer. Haaland will turn into an eight foot churro by halftime.
Retractable roofs in Houston and Dallas. Air conditioning is our friend.
I'm more worried about the watch parties and people drinking outside than the players
Yea I don't think Europeans are truly prepared for Houston. I can definitely see a lot of dehydration incidents
Tbf the weather in the US is such a mess now that the NW cities like Portland and Seattle had days over 110 degrees in June last year. This year it has been the wettest summer on record. I'm just hoping for no west coast fires
Bro last summer it hit 115 in fucking Portland. My apartment didn't have air conditioning and the temperature in my living room exceeded 100
I’ve been to Houston in July. I’m from Georgia and can handle the heat but that was some next level hell. Never again
Car read 105° multiple times today. 5:00 right now and it's 98° feels like 105° and summer just started... Edit- Shockingly low humidity at 40% according to my weather app. Generally 80% is a gracious low for us
Add humidity and swamp ass to that.

Imagine Scotland qualifying and them having to play in Miami
> Imagine Scotland qualifying Now now, no need to be cruel.
I mean with the extra slots they have a way better shot.
Man, people from the UK seem to love Miami and Vegas. I think they never get heat like that back home, so they love those spots for their holidays. But yeah, it will be something different to play in those conditions at the peak of summer. Tilts things slightly in favor of the American and African nations who often play in that type of heat.

Just doing a quick Google, highest ever temp in Norway is 35.6°C which is exactly how hot it was in Chicago today. Chicago's record high is 42.8°C.
Where are my Chicago peeps at that are cooking right now 👀
Hoping to see England play a game in KC so they can melt in that heat
It's currently 96 degrees at Arrowhead, lol. And we don't have a retractable roof. They'll probably have the games at night.
Houston has a roof and A/C. Playing in Mexico City in the summer will be fun ☀️
México City has a pretty temperate climate cause the elevation.
That same elevation is going to cause havok on cardio. I am either going to bet under total points or against any team that doesn't arrive like a month before.
Yep. But Monterrey will be fun.
USA Atlanta - Mercedes-Benz Stadium (71,000) Boston - Gillette Stadium (65,878) Dallas - AT&T Stadium (80,000) Houston - NRG Stadium (72,220) Kansas City - Arrowhead Stadium (76,416) Los Angeles - SoFi Stadium (70,000) Miami - Hard Rock Stadium (65,326) New York/New Jersey - MetLife Stadium (82,500) Philadelphia - Lincoln Financial Field (67,594) San Francisco/Bay Area - Levi's Stadium (68,500) Seattle - Lumen Field (72,000) Canada Toronto - BMO Field (30,000) Vancouver - BC Place (54,500) Mexico Guadalajara - Estadio Akron (46,355) Mexico City - Estadio Azteca (87,523) Monterrey - Estadio BBVA (51,000) For those that are wondering, these are mostly NFL stadiums.
Sofi will have games, not the Rose Bowl
Rose Bowl would be sick tho
SoFi is supposed to be an amazing stadium. Gorgeous, opulent, Great place to see a game. But yes, I will really miss the Rose bowl.
AT&T stadium can be reconfigured to hold more. It had a regular season record attendance of 105,121.
I think a lot of these stadiums are going to have expanded capacities when the World Cup rolls around. I think SoFi isn't just 70k, it could be 100,000 even. I wonder if they will allow standing room.

Probably finish it before the Eglinton line
The heat death of the universe will occur before the Eglinton line and the Downtown relief line are finished
Even the Azteca is a NFL stadium lol
Unless Shakira performs the week before an NFL game.
The Azteca before NFL games was so beautiful :(
Toronto hosting World Cup games doesn’t feel real
BMO field hosting a WC match sounds insane. Can’t be anything more than a group stage match for sure…right?
Canada and Mexico are getting 10 matches apiece. The U.S. is getting 60, including all the matches past the first round of knockouts (quarter finals onwards). Yeah I think it’s almost a fair question whether we ever have another single country World Cup
When FIFA announced the cities they mentioned regions. I assume this means the group stage will be split into respective regions and possibly even the early knockout rounds. The real winner here is Mexico fans in the southern US.

It would be glorious
Lol thats true it would turn into a bacchanalia that they make documentaries about on Netflix for years.
Levi's is in a boring location but the Bay Area is massive; it's not like it's actually in the middle of nowhere
A resident of one of these cities, I’m both excited and terrified

yeah the World Cup in santa clara will be cool
So many parking lots and corporate office campuses to see in Santa Clara!

Italian fans are gonna be shocked that they gotta take the Cal Train an hour south to watch the game!
with 48 teams they might qualify again
Maybe
When they say SF/Bay Area what they really mean is Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. Home of the San Francisco 49ers Yes I’m aware it makes no sense
Don't forget scenic shots of the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf, 40+ miles away from the stadium.
Still waiting for shots of the Dumbarton Bridge tbh
Can I interest you in a trip to San Francisco? And by San Francisco I mean a random parking lot an hour south surrounded by strip malls and suburban houses? Truly oozing history and character. It will be a trip that your wallet will never forget.

I’m an hour north of Atlanta. I’m tempted to go and watch any matchup that is relatively good
It's a once in a lifetime event. Do it. I plan to.
That'll be an expensive world cup for fans
I'll just be attending 1 match in Houston with my family, that's more than enough for me and can finally see a WC game.
Same but in Dallas. Anyone who’s been to Jerry’s world knows you won’t afford another trip
DONT PARK IN THE WALMART!
the friendly this year for Madrid vs Barcelona in las vegas starts at $350
Lmao I can't even imagine how expensive these tickets are going to be... Honestly doesn't matter because people will buy them at any price. FIFA knows this. They are going to milk this.
That was so bad. I'm not even trying to be a jerk or funny. That was just bad. Them announcing Atlanta in the central region was the cherry on top.

They have to put down real grass in the turf stadiums like Dallas and Seattle right?
Yes FIFA requires grass. Since this is July they'll just swap it back to turf for NFL season come August/Sept
Seattle will definitely be putting down grass, that was part of the bid 👍
Dallas resident, here! Welcome! I’m a half hour walk from the Linc. Philadelphia is going to be an absolute blast for this.

Also one of the few that you can plausibly walk or take transit to the stadium.
oh absolutely, the train ride down there will be a riot in itself haha

Edmonton in the video but not selected. Weird
Curious lack of the Midwest, also that east region is fairly dense besides Miami
The big Midwest cities mostly didn't bid, it was down to KC and Cincinnati.
> that east region is fairly dense Well, it's dense population-wise as well.
Chicago and Minneapolis pulled out because they didn't want to put up with FIFA's bullshit.
Would have loved Chicago games, but I understand. Fuck FIFA

Also probably the cheapest city to visit (maybe Guadalajara), most historic stadium in the WC, and among the best atmospheres. To be honest I think this is going to be a great WC to go to, there are so many options and cool cities to visit.
Mexico city is definitely on the to go list.
Dude isn't even joking. There's so much in Mexico City, and you could still just go for the tacos and have the best trip ever.
atlanta: waffle house during godforsaken hours it’ll be a fever dream experience for you but youll never forget it and youll have a great time
Philly because it is the best place to throw batteries at opposing fans. Mexico City will probably be the best atmosphere though.
International hooligans will fit right in in Philadelphia
Sea/Van, good Asian food, clean air, beautiful views everywhere, and good transit (by our standards at least)
Arrowhead in Kansas City will have tailgating and BBQ!
Do not come to the game in Foxborough (Boston). It’s 45 minutes outside the city and the traffic blows for events.
i for one am looking forward to the CUM World Cup
maaaan, i’m so disappointed that DC/Baltimore wasn’t chosen but i’m used to being overshadowed by the bigger cities on the east coast lol. at the same time though, idgaf—it’s the world cup! i’ll travel if need be; it’s my dream to see a WC match 😭
whoever goes to guadalajara to watch their team, the tequilas and tortas ahogadas are on me!
Family in Seattle Kansas and Mexico city can't fucking wait. I hope i don't die between now and then!
If Ireland qualify and get to play in Boston there will be carnage
Boo, Baltimore-DC didn’t make the cut At least we have Philly and NYC close by
Why do i submit myself to these FIFA Shows all the time when they are cringe and embarrasing? When was the last time the main host nation did not have the capital city on the host cities? Tokyo was not in 2002 and neither was Stockholm in 1958 but i don't remember others
DC doesn't have a big enough stadium cause FedEx field is a literal garbage dump that spews sewage into the stands
Hey hey, it's not "sewage", it's Mr. Snyder.
US is unique in that our capitol is not one of the largest cities though the metro area is.
And fed ex field is a terrible stadium
How many knee ligaments are strewn about FedEx? Gotta be in the dozens at this point
[At least 7 major injuries just in one end of the field](https://i1.wp.com/www.sopitas.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/lesiones-campo-washington-football-team.jpeg)
Literally falling apart.

If you have ever been to FedEx Field outside of DC you will see that it is not up to "showcase" standards
Yokohama is part of Greater Tokyo though, so it still counts IMO
Sofi Stadium was chosen over Rose Bowl for LA
The Rose Bowl is a historic stadium, but it's a fucking dump that causes 3 hour traffic jams whenever it hosts an event over half capacity.
Instead, SoFi is a beautifully designed and aesthetic stadium that causes 3 hour traffic jams when it hosts an event at over half capacity!
The Rams games weren’t bad actually to go to and there will be a light rail by 2026 maybe.
Inside > outside
Seattle is going to be awesome
Not sure how that many traveling fans are actually going to get to Arrowhead... but fun
Going to be lots of people that drive from all over the Midwest to go watch.
Has there been any talk about how people will get to some of these stadiums? Because some like Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City are super far from the city center and have basically no proper mass transit system.
They’ll set up special event buses.
It's coming to SEA! Hell yeah!
Will this be the first World Cup with legal weed? How many of these cities have it?
New Jersey does, and assuming you stay in NYC weed is about to become legal there too. Decent chance it's legalized nationally by then, it's popular and makes a ton of money. It's also increasingly impossible to try to control when it's legal in so much of the country.
Seattle does 👍
Seattle, LA, “Bay Area”, New Jersey, Boston
Do people not actually pay attention to events in these stadiums? Because if you did there's no reason in hell you would choose Levi's Stadium.
We’re talking about a governing body that chose to put a World Cup in Qatar….I can assure you no thought went into it beyond the city/metro and size of the venue
Crazy, never would have imagined we'd have World Cup games an hour from home. *Begins furiously saving money*
