There's a dive bar near my apartment that has a sign saying they specifically don't accept cards from Capital One. I paid with a Capital One card several times before I ever noticed the sign.
I asked the bartender about it one time and she said the owner hates them because they sided with a customer over a charge-back once.
The bar also has a bunch of signs warning that if you forget to close out your tab that they will add a 20% gratuity and run your card at the end of the night.
Apparently one customer disputed their quite large tab after the bar did that and CapOne took the customer’s side.
Right! I was thinking the same thing… one “fraud investor” commented on the Facebook saying this was common? I’ve traveled quite a bit and stayed in sketchy motels to luxury hotels and never once saw something like that!!
exactly, that’s my point. using cashapp cards as an example - they’re visas yet get declined for being prepaid cards. so it doesn’t really have much to do with visa/mastercard/amex, as opposed to the numbers that denote it as prepaid.
Seems like a place that doesnt want to make money. Usually places like these dont want these cards cause they are charged more on Point of sales machines. I tend to avoid places like these in general. You dont accept my card you dont want my money is my thinking.
This is likely an issue with charge backs. Especially in foreign hotels. I’ve had hotels charge me for things after I’ve left and had to get the bank involved. Word to the wise: get a copy of your itemized bill before you leave. Take a photo of it and assume at some point you’ll have to share it with your bank as proof of the actual agreed charges. Challenge anything on your bill before you leave the premises.
I've stayed in some shitty Motel 6's as where we're traveling, sometimes it's that our the motel from the movie "Vacancy." I've never encountered anything like this before. The closest I got to that was the one in Princeton, NJ that wouldn't accept cash, but offered that I could go to a gas station and get a prepaid card and use that. Goofiest thing I ever heard.
When I lost my job once and fell on hard times, all my credit cards worked with me to settle the debt. Every single one. Except CHASE. THEY SUCK. I would ban them. (And did at the business I started the next year.) Did a million dollars in business on cards.. none on Chase. Fuck Chase. But I also ran all my purchasing through my Paypal card. Now I have Cashapp and SoFi cards.
They charged their "losses" mostly fees and interest back to me as my income and the IRS tried to tax me on this "income'. I had to fill out a special document for the IRS to prove I was indigent to prove I didn't have the money. Had to list every i mean EVERY damn thing I owned including the clothes on my back and the value of the clothes on my back to prove I couldn't pay their bill. The good and very bad news is i was indigent and didn't need to pay taxes.

The majority of the “not accepted” are places that tend to target low income demographics and somewhat shady behavior. I wouldn’t say SoFi or Google/Apple Pay fall in that category though specifically.
I think I read this was at a Motel 6 so I’m sure the clientele there aren’t really the best.

I scrolled pretty far down with no real explanation so I have one: a lot of hotels experience A lot of scams and shady stuff with prepaid cards and online cards like Chime (which is not a bank). They still technically aren’t allowed to do this though.
If I had to guess, most of those cards on the list are secured or credit building cards. I think the hotel is just worried about young people coming in and not being able to charge them for damages because they have a $200 credit limit.
The sofi card is probably just on there because they assumed they bring customers that are just as bad as the self, destiny or chime customers and have never really heard of sofi.

If enforcement follows traditional logic, then the second statement nullifies the first since SoFi uses MasterCard.

You posted this clearly not understanding the system. No card reader knows it’s a SoFi card. It’s Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc..

Because the numbers that make up the card denote it as a prepaid. Every vendor and card type has a prefix that denotes what brand/type of card it is.

Yeah, I just went on vacation and used SoFi to pay for everything, and I stayed at a very nice reputable hotel.

Chase only pays 0.01% interest on savings accounts and there are stories of Chase closing people's accounts for unknown reasons.

hotels work with big banks, they hate them but it should work.
I've used SoFi for travel, you'll be fine. Just post this on a review for Google maps and yelp
