"There is no water crisis" - The Mayor.

Knowl19

Strong shades of "there is no war in Ba Sing Se".

WildWouks

Let's change that statement a bit. "There is no water!"

setfree84

Limping from one crisis to the next

WookieConditioner

Unless you're Bheki Cele.  Then its pimping from one buffet lunch to the next.  He must have ×× the best ×× cocaine in ZA

MikePoes

Because they keep voting for the ANC. Then they get nothing

NauntyNienel

I live in a small town that has had water issues forever. So I'm sorted with plenty of water tanks (biggest one is attached to water mains and to my house with a pressure pump) I also have plenty of 5l water bottles standing around. I've been advising my friends and family who live in the city to do the same. But of course most people can't afford this.

WookieConditioner

Cause you voted for the ANC. It really is that simple.

SA_Swiss

No, please do NOT blame the current government for anything at all. This narcissistic government will probably come up with a statement equivalent to "the previous government put measures in place to ensure that we will fail right before this crucial election" or "miss-communication as to where the maintenance should be made, i.e. not on the lawns, but on the infrastructure has led to this crisis" Note; nothing is ever the fault of the ANC. cANCer - this is what they are, except they bleed you dry before killing you.

AppIdentityGuy

Another example of the idea that democracy is the political system based on the idea that the people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.....

grimeflea

And those who propagate those ideas love the fact that the people who latch onto them are uneducated enough to not see the light through the forest of lies.

Johannesburg is the largest city on Earth without a water supply close by. I don't think it's as simple as changing who is in charge, with climate change and Johannesburg's vulnerable position, this will always be a huge issue. An issue at a scale no one else in the entire world has to deal with. While the ANC has been corrupt and let infrastructure decay without proper maintenance, relying on water to be pumped from hundreds of kilometres away from the Vaal dam and Lesotho is always going to be very risky business. The whole reason the water crisis is as bad as it is, is because the Lesotho Highlands water project is almost a decade behind schedule on it's second phase, due to corruption and the complexities of the project. That is not going to change anytime soon, no matter who is voted in provincially or nationally. Even if all leaks are fixed and there is zero leakage, leaks account for 25% of the water used in Johannesburg. This is a lot, but Gauteng's population grew by 25% from 2017 to 2023, so fixing all the leaks puts Johannesburg back in the the same position as 2017. Which is still a highly vulnerable position. In general, this is going to be a massive problem for the whole of Gauteng in the future. If the Lesotho Highlands water project does not deliver the expected results in 2028, Gauteng is going to be screwed, and no political party is going to be able to change that. I would also argue that water is a human right, and no matter one's political affiliation, they should have access to water.

WookieConditioner

Weird how it worked for a long while? A long long while, until now.

aaaaaaadjsf

? It hasn't worked with the current population size of Johannesburg and Gauteng. That's the whole point. More people need more water, and the current infrastructure and maintenance cannot keep up with that. That's why the Lesotho Highlands water project is being built. Johannesburg's population has tripled in the last 30 years. In the last 5 years, Gauteng's population went from 12 million to 15 million. It would be very obtuse to suggest that the same systems that supplied water for a much smaller population in the past, can continue to supply water for everyone now. Even in the last few years there have been massive changes to the population of Gauteng.

ChefDJH

Their point is that upgrades should have been done 10 or 20 years ago with the prediction of increased population. Not waiting until there's no more water until suddenly kicking into gear.

FashionableNumbers

The non-maintenance of the infrastructure is the biggest problem. Water is running down the streets because of burst pipes. That's where the water is going.

zimspy

Genuine question, would it have worked out any different anyhow? All our countries (African countries coming out of colonization) are all in shambles now. These liberating parties came out of the gate hard riding the win and it would have been hard to get rid of them then. But if someone else had taken the reigns, would it have been any different? Even if we get 1 or 2 top leaders who are genuinely for the people, the rest of the crop still want to eat and working against that would be hard. Would the leader even last without the support of his subordinates? Africa worries me a lot.

Isand0

I read somewhere that liberation organisations are not equipped to rule. They get into power and are suddenly overwhelmed by the responsibility of running a country that incorporates the people and organisations they were against. So, they revert back to a party of liberation instead of unification when there is pushback or criticism. Could things have been different? Perhaps, but it would have taken the extraordinary step of giving away power and saying we don't know everything and we need help.

OpenRole

Doesn't the DA run Joburg?

machetedestroyer

because you get what you vote for

Tokogogoloshe

Meanwhile, I’m currently sitting in the middle of an area called Hantam Karoo, which is semi arid, and all the farmers, small and large, have water for domestic use no problem. Electricity too. The local towns not so much.
