More like “scientists find natural metals within the moon, which has long been theorized to be a chunk of rock that broke off during a collision between Earth and Theia, and so finding metal in it makes sense.” Emphasizing the word *structure* makes people think of something man made, but the word just means a complex arrangement.

Benniehead

This sub is all about clickbait so that tracks.

McFlyParadox

Seems most space and 'popular science ' subs are just that. And if it's not in the posts, it's in the comments.

Rimefeathers

Haha I saw one earlier today that was "Nasa confirms they received transmission from interstellar craft" in reference to voyager 1.

i'm not sayin' it's aliens - because it's not

aberroco

Massive metal structures on the Moon... Wait, no, that's not aliens, that's Hitler!

fancyshandy

This headline probably kills over on r/fakemoon. Moon believers and non-believers generate clicks all the same and the internet has shown time and time again that it has no shame, it just wants clicks

Benniehead

As I like everyone’s comments 🙄

CeruleanRuin

"What would this look like if I could see it with my own eyes???"

Es7x

100%; it is called *"spaceporn"* after all.

XxTreeFiddyxX

I expected more space tities but this in nice too

BernardoOrel

Three titties here not enough for you?

all_is_love6667

hard to escape the blizzard of clickbait on the internet misinformation will misinform

Benniehead

Big facts

Jves221

Right, id love an actual title. Maybe less people commenting but who cares? Half the comments now are just pointing out the dumb title so whats the loss.

alucardd34

Nah that’s totally a mass effect relay, or Nazis. Was the “structure” in the shape of a swastika? Oh it could also be the space ship that the dinosaurs flew away on, which crashed into the moon killing all the remaining dinosaurs except Steve who’s been up there plotting.

ryjhelixir

hey! who told you about steve? ^(\*shit!\*)

agetuwo

[Redacted] protocol breach.

Dobermanpinschme

The great pyramid is also a complex arrangement. Aka. Structure. Can someone use better English so it's not so conspiratorial?

BG-DoG

Well they got me, that was one hell of a headline. Excellent spin.

fezzam

Structure pfft call me when they find an edifice.

FauxReal

Did anyone cross-post this to r/conspiracy yet?

Aerodynamic_Soda_Can

Auw man, I thought the astronauts built a big steel framed building or something while they were there, then buried it to keep it secret.

Sno_Wolf

So, you're saying it's DEFINITELY aliens.

atenne10

This theory makes complete sense if you don’t take into account its orbit or proximity to earth. You need to try harder!

I_AM_FERROUS_MAN

Can't wait for the new conspiracy theories because of this word choice. Science "journalism" is just dumb. Then again, I'll take it over other deplorable conspiracies like 9/11, flat earth, ufos, and the moon landings.

Zombie_Peanut

Oh it's not man made...it's ALIEN made!!!!!! /s

thavi

Also the vague "NASA equipment"

Ivor79

Right! Is there even a functional difference between "metal" and "metal structure"?

sabenani

Does it mean that this helps push forward the theory of the Theia collision?

Meta-failure

How is this not the top comment?

apittsburghoriginal

Because it was commented 10 minutes ago and this post has been up for over two hours.

Isord

It is.

Meta-failure

It wasn’t when I added this! But glad it is now! Regardless of the downvotes.

But it’s the Jews with the space lasers! *puts on tin foil hat* Have the Nazis and Jews been working together all along?

sloppypickles

So I have a stupid question. If we somehow extracted all that metal for use on earth, would we lower the actual gravity of the moon? Would it effect us?

aleslimbadboy

We can extract metals from the moon and put trash on the moon by the same amount of mass. Big brain here😎

tkMunkman

Mine out the moon, and then fill the holes with trash, seal the holes, pump o2, burn the trash, repeat

putriidx

My plastics micro but my brain big

pegothejerk

Gonna need to create a hell of a magnetic field for that plan to work, hoss, otherwise the solar winds will strip away the o2 and gasses from the burn off in no time.

tkMunkman

That's the point. You pump the o2 into the sealed trash shafts, the trash burns and vents out a vent designed to vent at a certain pressure. It would push all the gas and pollutants into space where we will never ever ever have to deal with consequences, ever.

ApoliteTroll

Until we need to save the space turtles.

AdmiralThrawnProtege

Just turn the trash into space paper straws, ez fix

pegothejerk

You know what, we could put residential recycle bins on the moon

Isord

You can use the hollowed out moon like a rocket to propel the moon a bit faster to keep it from tidally locking.

tkMunkman

Can't do that. It would show the world the massive secret alien/nazi moon base on the dark side of the moon. The planet would panic as Space Hitler started his blitzkrieg onto earth with his Aryan alien army.

and if we transported that much metal to earth would it increase the gravity on earth?

probablyuntrue

technically^any^additional^mass^would

RHX_Thain

1000 gigastons of iron, or 1000 gigatons of feathers?

RominRonin

Clearly 1000 gigatons or iron (has a higher terminal velocity) That was the question, right?

EarthExile

Of course

Calamity-Gin

We would, but it would take a better mathematician than me to determine by how much. If we extracted all the metal of this structure and brought it to the Earth for our use, we would be transferring a significant amount of mass from the Moon to the Earth. The Earth’s gravitational pull would become greater, and the Moon’s gravitational pull would lessen.  It is an oversimplification to say that the Moon orbits the Earth. The Moon and Earth both orbit a common point, or barycenter, between them. That point falls within the surface of the Earth but is not the center of the Earth. So, moving that much mass from the Moon to the Earth would cause the barycenter to migrate towards the center of the Earth. My math, however, is not good enough to suggest what would happen to the orbit of the Moon.

Kjshanley

I mean I'm not a physicist and took two astronomy classes, but according to Google gravity between two objects is calculated with F = (G * m1 * m2) / d^2 (Force = (gravitational constant * mass1 * mass2) / distance squared) So from my understanding removing all the metal would lower the mass of the moon, ultimately making the gravitational force between Earth and the Moon smaller. Without knowing how much metal we'd be removing, the effects could be as small as slightly weaker tides, the Moons shifts and stabilizes in a shorter orbit, or it breaks apart and all hell breaks loose as material comes crashing into Earth killing us all and potentially giving Earth a shiny new ring. So in conclusion, whichever option you like more, that one.

HeyWiredyyc

Thanks for narrowing it down

EternitowyBogdan

You forgot to increase mass of the earth. So the earth would be pulling more the moon and moon would have less impact on oceans tides.

MrHyperion_

ab≠(a+1)(b-1)

DIIFII

>or it breaks apart and all hell breaks loose as material comes crashing into Earth killing us all and potentially giving Earth a shiny new ring. Have you been reading Seveneves by any chance?

Kjshanley

I did a while ago, absolutely the best way ever to start a book

The-Joon

YES!!! That is the answer. YES!!!

getfukdup

if you took all the weight from the moon to the earth it would make the earths gravity stronger which would bring the moon closer which would make the effects(Tide) similar

Vile-X

By the time we are able to do that, we will be able to travel the stars and have unlimited resources.

TropicalPeat

I think you might enjoy The Future of Geography by Tim Marshall.

domscatterbrain

Post this question in r/theydidthemath

TheEpicOfGilgy

Probably, but in terms of relative change it would require like .05% more energy required to jump.

noregrets_sofar

If we extracted all the metal from the Moon, it would indeed lower its mass and, consequently, its gravity. However, in practice, we wouldn't be able to mine very deeply. Even though we might go deeper than on Earth, the metallic ore would still constitute only a small percentage of the total volume of the ore body. The remaining material, mostly barren rock, would stay on the Moon

killixerJr

*All* of the metal? Probably 🤷🏻‍♂️ most metal has a high density and such, a higher mass per given volume than most of the other elements on the moon--so if *all* of the metal was taken away, the gravity of the moon would certainly be affected, but probably only in a way that would change the shelf life of the Moon's life expectancy as our satellite by a few million years if I had to guess. It's not a stupid question, just an interesting hypothetical. I don't know enough about math and gravity to say whether that mass would still affect the orbit if it was brought to Earth, but if it was taken out of the equation entirely, I think that's what would happen. Oh, and the tides

96385

This the most human comment ever. "How would it affect humans if we raped the moon?"

ExoticSterby42

So I take it’s not Hydrogen or Helium

nodeymcdev

If it were helium the moon would obviously float away

Yeah... Because helium is lighter than air.

Choosing 'structure' clearly highlights this intent, surely "deposits" would be a much more appropriate word to use

Alien banks on the moon confirmed

Donan007

Hollow moon conspiracy is already pretty prominent.

AmericanPsychonaut69

You mean this year-old news that immediately clarifies the term “structure”? https://www.unilad.com/news/moon-metal-structure-discovered-nasa-291342-20230504

DisillusionedBook

FFS these headlines that use weasel clickbait words to infer "manufactured" is so rife it turns me off rather than encourages me to click and learn about it... but here I am commenting on it. Fuck.

NunyaBeese

The word "structure" is doing some heavy lifting here. If you decide to actually Google it you'll find that it's almost certainly from a huge asteroid impact or the results of a cooled magma ocean. But it is indeed a gigantic deposit of metal the stretches for 1200 miles. The oldest article I found stating this was from 2019.

Anything by uni lad should absolutely not be described as a better article mate. Absolute clickbait rag, it isn't worth clicking on.

swaggernsally

Fair. I guess better in a sense that you don’t have to download the MSN app in the other link to probably get the same story that unilad copied and pasted to their site. Edit: guess you can expand the MSN article and read the rest. Unilads article isn’t copied and pasted, but a more truncated version with similar information. Clickbait, yes, but the information is sound enough.

Rock_Zeppelin

How do they know it's a structure?

StupidTurtle88

I’ve always wondered that if we somehow are able to extract ores and rare earth materials from the moon or a comet, how does it get back to Earth? Isn’t every large object a potential bomb hurling towards Earth?

LeadingRegion7183

So, would it be more feasible to mine iron and other ores from Luna rather than moving asteroids to low earth orbit?

Moonfall is a documentary.

so they found mineral deposits that was long the rice was there? neat

chittok

Iron is one the most abundant elements in the Univers. All average stars, like our Sun, produce iron in their core.

cold_kingsly

When it comes to space exploration the word structure sure does get thrown around a lot.

ForestOfMirrors

What metal?

phathead08

Well that’s the next space race! Drilling for minerals on the moon.

BakaTensai

We know where the aliens that built the pyramids went, FINALLY

RealLars_vS

Not sure if OP came up with that title or if it was some news outlet, or just another scientist who’s bad at interviews, but please do not call it a structure, for this will set off the conspiracy theorists.

object_failure

How about chunk of metal

Original_moisture

So basically the remnants of Theia were on the moon, with the other remnants as earth’s large low shear velocity provinces. Or at least that’s what it looks like.

CplTenMikeMike

Alien base??

Tigerowski

Most definitely not. Metals can be iron, nickel, etc. just as our planet has under the surface.

HenriGallatin

Bear in mind that what constitutes a "metal" will differ depending upon if you're speaking to a chemist or an astrophysicist.

Aesthetics_Supernal

Screw metal, what is the scientific use of Structure?

dontpet

Or a guitarist.

Tigerowski

Even a musician.

CplTenMikeMike

But remember TMA-1 buried in Tycho Crater? They maybe found the real one! We'll never be sure until we dig it up!

Apollyon314

Great. This is the beginning of the our end as some billionaire fuck decides to mine the moon. It cracks in 2037 iirc.

Keejhle

I mean it's not super strange. Look at how highlighted areas correlate with impact craters and the "seas" of the moon. Probably a geologic phenomenon caused by parts of the moon melting and recrystalizing.

raylan_givens6

I'm glad they didn't use Home Depot equipment though maybe there is a fourth of july sale coming up soon

OK, that might kinda explain the Defense budget.
