I've been grinding this game with friends once in a while for about two years. We were aiming for 30k but got this incredible RNG. As far as I'm aware, we were the only ones doing four players. The world record for the 1 player vs 3 cpus category is 25,600. Obviously, the scores shouldn't be compared since being four is a huge advantage.
The goal of the game is to be the Lickitung to rack up the highest bill at the end, by eating the most expensive sushi during the round. There are 7 types of sushi from most to least expensive (sea urchin, fatty tuna, shrimp, salmon roe, tuna roll, egg, cucumber roll) and an 8th item which is that green tea that makes you waste time running around with a burned tongue for eating it (I always thought it was wasabi as a kid, but apparently the text in it says green tea).
Obviously, what it seems like you should do is be the one to mostly eat Sea Urchin (the smooth orange top one) to get a higher score. However, there’s also a point multiplier for consecutively eating the same type of sushi capping at x5. So first example someone eating a ton of consecutive shrimp might beat someone who alternates between sea urchin and fatty tuna.
In OPs case, most players were sacrificial and I couldn’t discern an obvious strategy at first. However, then they got ridiculously good luck and had that huge string of sea urchin in a row which they left for player 2. Basically they were just clearing plates and hoping for a jackpot string of sea urchin, and that’s what they got here.
