Admirable-Ad-6275

Bisexual males just don’t exist to them

Panzer_Man

It's always like this in Tv-shows Bi women are just straight women, but with a bit of "flavour" Bi men are just gay men, but pathetic and in denial It really sucks that we are never really done justice in any type of media. I just want a bi charcater that isn't treated like a stereotype... please

Euphoric_Archer_6233

I know a bi male character who isn't a stereotype...too bad he's a side character that gets about 5 minutes of screentime every season, is often forgotten by the writers and whether or not he's actually in a relationship with his "boyfriend" is never confirmed in the actual show. He's also in a terrible show

Housemuwaway12345

You watch Brooklyn 99? Rosa is bi and I feel like they treated it properly

Bagimations

I think Bob from Bobs Burgers is Bi, but I’m not sure

marinemashup

Bi guys are probably just gay dudes in denial, according to them Same as how bi girls are just straight girls trying to seem different, in their mind

[deleted]

And bi guys are more common than gay actually

AGuyFromGPlus

I vote to rename them Bi Boys cause it sounds like a Boy Band

Themlethem

Sometimes they do that thing, where the more masculine guy in the gay relationship is bi, because if you're masc you can't possibly be full blown gay!

CrazyCatLady108

Peacemaker! although i hear he is more pansexual, but still pretty nice for broadening that aspect of acceptable superhero behavior.

DogmaticPragmatism

Pansexuality is basically a subset of bisexuality so it still very much counts

Expensive-Argument-7

Mentions husband or wife in offhanded comment that can be cut out for international audiences.

NICK07130

I understand why companies dont change thier icons to rainbows; in countries where BEING GAY IS LITERALLY ILLEGAL. Its actually pretty fun seeing all the company logoes embrace the rainbow and remind us about pride, its not like corporate entities can be gay, but spreading the positivity is still pretty cool. Even if it is just for profit.

Koolasushus

Forgot: -->the gay character is insignificant to the story, making it easy to censor stuff in their scenes or even cut them out entirely

Slow_Sprinkles_9424

Careful, Disney might sue you for stealing their ideas.

TheShredder23

Well here’s an award then

2pl8isastandard

Can't lose the Chinese or Middle East views now can we Lord Disney.

Mission_Strength9218

Disney never cared about progressive views, it was always about money

Male gay/bi rep is just two dads.

SeaworthinessRare851

Modern Family for 10+ years.

Hopefo

I know beggars can’t be choosers but they are lowkey a toxic couple (yes most sitcom couples are toxic for comedy). They constantly bicker and lie with each other and the most affection they show is a kiss once a season. Still it was nice to see a mainstream family sitcom include gay men in their awful suburban bliss marriages.

SeaworthinessRare851

Mitch and Cam have a sweet relationship, I never got the vibe they hated each-other, In fact they seemed more in-love then Phil or Clair. Just my opinion on the show Regardless though, the show came out in what 2008/2009? The depiction was cutting edge for a sitcom, and they did a good job.

LaterGatorPlayer

With you 100%. The person you responded to is the first person I’ve ever seen or read that thought their relationship wasn’t great. It literally never occurred to me that somebody could look at how they were portrayed as a couple and think the relationship was ‘toxic’. Of all the relationships on the show, theirs seemed to be the most….’wholesome’ is the word I would use.

balmyze

How much more affection are they suppose to show on a sitcom? Tongue down each other's throats? Isn't that as much as all the other couples on the show anyways? Seems like we're just nitpicking things to get worked up about.

bbbhhbuh

Well there’s an entire episode in which the show’s straight couple does a roleplay on Valentines Day and the woman explicitly says she is not wearing anything under her coat

NICK07130

How often do you see that tho

ElmaCannonSoldier

Potential_Macaroon57

American Dad has Greg and Terry

SeeTheSounds

The Loud House character Clyde has two dads and it’s pretty consistent throughout the seasons of the show.

Some0wlOnTheInternet

They're the least over the top gay couple in kids shows

akiomaster

Pete the Cat on Amazon Prime. The squirrel has two dads.

The-Great-Memelord

Willow from The Owl House has two dads

[deleted]

Delving into cartoons, Owl House and She-Ra too!

kamekaze1024

The Loud House

IBlazeMyOwnPath

She-ra and The Owl House have some two-dad characters, but the latter actually has some truly fantastic lgbt rep so it's not just falling back on what really is a trope at this point

Popplio3233

The disney version is - - - - - - -Background

FINNCULL19

Or they're the bad guys, or they're just the comic relief.

Affectionate_Rub5564

Or they get the show cut

FINNCULL19

That happened recently with The Owl House, since multiple characters within the show were canonically LGBTQIA, but they also let Amphibia get away with showing a kid getting stabbed on-screen and the only blowback Amphibia got was that they had to delay the episode's release. Nice fucking priorities, Disney. Hell, Disney literally made Alex Hirsch and the Gravity Falls crew redo a scene that had a lesbian couple ***IN THE BACKGROUND*** of the scene. They even flipped out at him for doing a scene where Grunkle Stan didn't wear his seatbelt when driving. Disney's mindset is pretty much this: A child getting stabbed???? Oh, that's okay, but LGBT characters that *AREN'T* the bad guys/comic relief/background extras and morally gray characters wearing seatbelts?! WON'T SOMEBODY *PLEASE* THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!?!

MiloMorningstar

Didn't Dana Terrace flat out say that the cutting wasn't due to the LGBTQ rep? It was because the show is serialised and attracted an older audience than Disney expected, so they couldn't sell as many toys, and had the show been airing on DisneyXD and not regular Disney Channel it all would have been fine? Amphibia got away with stabbing a child because they're an episodic show, so it's easier to market to kids who are randomly tuning in in the middle of a season for a wacky 10 minute adventure

crestren

What irks me is that it sucks for the creators' end as they have to deal with upper management censors. Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls has said that in one of his episodes involving Cupid, he wanted to put in gay grandmas but couldnt as upper management feared Christian Conservatice backlash. Thats why only at the end the gay sheriffs could only come out. Then there was [Pixar](https://variety.com/2022/film/news/disney-pixar-same-sex-affection-censorship-dont-say-gay-bill-1235200582/) earlier this year that made a statement where they said that gay affections get cut by Disney corporate executives. They WANT to create LGBTQ reps but are always barred from it.

fl-x

Commander Hawthorne from the new Lightyear movie was pretty prominent though.

theaverageaidan

The bi character can be a man, as long as he's a hedonistic, chaotic, borderline sex addict a lá Lucipher

jer487

I mean Lucifer is kinda based but I can't imagine the show would ever pair him with a man. Like common he was basically straight.

marcster1

I remember during the interrogation of all his lovers scene it did show some dudes in there.

jer487

Oh I know it's obvious he's either bi or pan but they would probably never show it on screen or have him end up in a gay relationship. I mean I think it's confirmed he canonically prefers women but still. He never truly has anything going on with a man onscreen. It's tell don't show when it comes to this.

KinichJanaabPakal

Just because I'm bi doesn't mean I'm a hedonistic sex addict! I mean I am but it's not because I'm bi.

Slash3040

I like captain holt from Brooklyn 99. He was a gay man without it being his character. It was just he had his sexual preference but that didn’t define the character at all and that’s how real life is

stickers-motivate-me

Was he really gay, though? I heard he had a penchant for female women with heavy breasts!

khjohnso

And thigh gaps! Nothing sexier than the clear absence of a penis.

friendandfriends2

Do you know the hardest thing about be a gay black police office? The discrimination.

ElectricEcstacy

Honestly that was a great joke. Deadpan jokes are hard to pull off because there’s always the chance it’s too serious for people to understand it’s a joke but when executed well can be some of the best ever.

JEPerezmemeguy

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA THAT'S A CLASSIC HAHAHAHAH

the-tank7

They also show him and Kevin kissing

[deleted]

I feel like the writers just took every single gay stereotype in the world and went "yeah...not gonna do that"

le_grande_crochetage

It's also a good joke. In the first season at least, he is the straight man to Peralta, while being the only openly gay character.

bbbhhbuh

He’s husband is also one of the best characters in the show even though he’s just guest starring

whatwherewhenwhywhy

forgot them being excessively horny for some reason

SadButterscotch2

Either they're excessively horny and sexualized because LGBT people are promiscuous groomers/lesbians are hot, or they're completely sexless and barely ever hold hands, that way it's not _too_ gay, that would be icky.

cjh93

Heartstopper kicks a lot of these in the butt

JayJay_Tracer

Not in the comic though. Comic Elle really pisses me off. She has two traits: trans and Taos crush. That's it. She has like a total of 5 speech bubbles in the entire comic.

AlbinoDragon23

To be fair in the comic it doesn’t focus much on the side characters at all. The show added a lot in those regards

Horror-Till2216

Lesbian characters: always date or fuck a man at some point of the story, die or their shows get cancelled. Bi women: they start dating a woman, but she dies, so she ends up with a man.

VikaWiklet

Willow and Tara: Tara may have died but Willow doesn't end up with a guy, rather as an ultra-powerful force of nature.

lookhere1091

lol Fuck Kennedy

VikaWiklet

She was utterly forgettable.

Intelligent_Dumbass_

Gay character is the main focus on an episode about homophobia, but is otherwise used as comic relief in every other episode.

Alexwitminecraftbxrs

Not to mention the show not making it past 1 season if it’s lucky past 2 (if the show is marketed as mlm or wlw leads)

stupidapple4

the owl house be like

BigHead3802

So true, weird how lesbian characters will be shown having sex and shit, but they won't dare show two gay dudes' lips even touch. It's like this visceral disgust for two guys loving each other.

[deleted]

Its like lesbian characters are a way to add LGBT representation while still catering to heterosexual male gaze.

delamerica93

This is completely it

stellte

where have you seen lesbian sex scenes in shows? they usually get killed off or the sex scene is just for men’s enjoyment

BigHead3802

>the sex scene is just for men’s enjoyment Lesbian sex scenes are almost always for straight guys' enjoyment unfortunately. Same reason why they'll rarely show two guys kissing, because straight guys find it gross. The film industry historically has always catered to what straight guys want or like.

Expensive-Argument-7

That’s why there’s almost never a stud.

Lionoras

Remember when Luca (Disney) came out? The movie, as said by creators, was not a romance between two boys. But many gay Disney fans related a lot of the story to their own lives & experiences ("monsters" hiding, being sent away to your "weird uncle"...) and liked the interpretation of it being a small coming out story. You know. A queer reading. An interpretation. *SUBJECTIVE INTERPRETATION* ..."Oh my GAD! Why do you GAYS always have to SEXUALISE children!" "The creators confirmed that it was not a romance story! Quit it!" "Why do you hate straight people so much??" Like, I'm not even fucking gay. And even I found it so insanely silly. They treated it like queer people drew fucking porn of the characters, instead just the pure idea of "wouldn't it be cute if they two were gay? And in love? So cute." made them break out in hives.

Im_the_Moon44

Or my favorite response “Why can’t two male characters just be really emotionally close and have it not be turned into them being gay” Idk, why is South Park the first time I’ve ever seen a gay relationship be written like that? Why is that so offensive to people? It’s a realistic concept and yet I hardly see it in characters. Instead, most gay characters relationships in shows start as random bar hookups if the characters aren’t already married. It’s like some people are worried that people calling out a really close bromance as having gay undertones is gonna make the bromance they have with someone turn gay

NICK07130

Lesbians are definitely more culturally accepted, at the moment, which is generally why it's more common

JASONJACKSON1948

And are also infinitely more fetishized by straight men

[deleted]

Asexuality is always "cured" by a *insert right gender* seducing them after they fall in love.

[deleted]

canstac

Benson from kipo is my favorite gay rep(& also my favorite character in the show), he literally outright states he's gay only a few episodes into the show & later on he gets a love interest but they don't make him a walking stereotype and he doesn't get killed off, he's just a fun member of the main cast that happens to be gay & nobody really cares or brings it up

Aurora_Symphony3735

I feel like a lot of newer Netflix animated shows are doing pretty well with queer representation

crestren

I think Netflix gets some leeway since its a streaming network compared to CN or Disney who started from cable as they also air internationally to homophobic countries. Also, shoutout to El Topo and Chevre from Carmen Sandiego for being a cute couple. As well as Paranormal Park for having a male trans protagonist that also explores his family problem with his identity.

crestren

Ive always wanted a "girl meets boy but the boy is actually gay" trope in animation and it was so delightful to see that.

[deleted]

Mitch Downe in ParaNorman

UncomfortableWetFart

What I dislike is how his love interest is like the first guy he sees, who then gets little to no character and in the end they get together. Like, at least develop a love interest a little bit instead of just throwing them together? I did love the show tho

wearenottheborg

SO to Crazy Ex Girlfriend for the bi male representation: https://youtu.be/5e7844P77Is

fluffyapplenugget

Heartstopper on Netflix actually did a really good job representing gay, bi and trans characters. I hope other shows follow suit

Absolutely_insane_E

It was SO cute!

Panzer_Man

I guess it's because that show was actually made by and for us, and not by some old crusty man to make a buck off of gay people

JayJay_Tracer

Wasn't it written by a straight woman?

AlbinoDragon23

She’s not straight. Can’t remember off the top of my head what her sexuality is so I won’t guess, but I know she’s not straight

Responsible_File_529

Shoutout to my boy Will in Stranger Things. That car scene broke me.

hadapurpura

The writers better let him be happy. His whole arc is suffering.

Responsible_File_529

Facts. It pains me to see the hell Will has gone through. Give that man some love and a love interest... f@ck that its the 80s.

neptune304

You forgot lesbians used exclusively as sexual content or other characters making it sexual

sbubbydaily

every gay guy has to expose as much of themselves as possible for some reason even though a decent chunk of gay guys do literally the exact opposite

[deleted]

Have you ever seen any show produced by Netflix?

kcthis-saw

One thing I noticed is how effeminate or feminine guys are protrayed as being crazy while the good guy is always traditionally masculine.

MiNameIsPi

ace representation in media starter pack: .

There is actually a lot. Its often just hard to find out is character without a mate or are they ace

Aurora_Symphony3735

They made him heterosexual in Riverdale, being ace myself, this made me very sad

MrSharkPerson

Theoretically Doom Slayer. IIRC John Carmack said that doomguy hasn’t had seggs nor does he know what it even is

I_am_so_lost_hello

I mean isn't any character who never has a written romantic/sexual pairing potentially ace? It's not like most straight characters outright say they're straight, idk why most ace characters would either.

[deleted]

The ""normal"" assumption is that any character who hasn't been revealed to be on the LGBT spectrum is heterosexual. There is no asexual representation in not acknowledging that we exist.

Current-Position9988

Don't forget, bisexual women are only interested in hot chicks.

Pegussu

Legends of Tomorrow handled this well. Sarah tends to lean more towards women, but she has sex with Constantine and there's no big deal made of it. Constantine similarly flirts with both genders pretty readily.

[deleted]

To be fair - people are only interested in hot people in general.

kamekaze1024

I like Legend of Korra but i really do dislike that fact that all the gay characters in the show are all women. (Kyoshi, Korra, Asami, Kya). I’m glad they have the representation but its so easy to have 2 girls in love with another. It’s not really as groundbreaking as having two gay males, since gay women are more “accepted” than gay men

TurkeySub800

Its simple lesbian= hot and cute Gay=ugly and not hot According to what tv producers will think of the audience

d_shadowspectre3

Hey, we can't trigger all those fragile masculine men!! /s

chotix

Almost all LGBT representation in animation is lesbian. I straight up can't think of any explicit mlm representation in mainstream animation

Responsible_File_529

Or gay character is evil. See Power Puff Girls, Little Mermaid. Or is emotional or emotionally unstable, spiritually weak. See Will from Stranger Things

Aurora_Symphony3735

Wait... Will is gay? I haven't seen anything since season 1, btw. (I know i need to watch it, but i just have a really large watch list)

Pegussu

It becomes more and more obvious as the show goes. There are very minor seeds of the idea in the first two seasons. S3 is when it started getting more obvious.

[deleted]

Will: Pours his heart out to Mike Mike: Is stupid

ladislaoXD25

the mf didnt notice will crying NEXT TO HIM, i swear hes either dumb or ignoring will because of his haircut

scw55

Mike is in season 4 is >!a very flawed and unlikeable character, and obliviously is destroying Will, despite Will being as transparent as Will can comfortably be about their dynamic. I hope Mike grows because Mike x El relationship isn't investable because of him. And Will just exists to suffer on the show.!<

daesquuish1418

didn't will's actor confirm that will was gay and in love with mike?

hadapurpura

Even in the first episodes of season 1 Will's mom mentioned that his dad calls him the F slur, and they show bullies making fun of his "death" saying he was in fairyland with the other fairies.

Aurora_Symphony3735

Hmmmm, never noticed it, but then again, i haven't seen the first season since it released. I also assumed that them saying fairlyland was just them making fun of D&D

[deleted]

igertajti

Or two dads.

EskildDood

2 men would be far too controversial in the eyes of any studio, people are already screaming "Won't somebody just think of the children!?!" at lesbians in animation, imagine what they'd think with a healthy gay relationship on screen

Panzer_Man

I think it's due to a lot of shitty double-standards in regards to gender-roles. Women around children are seen as harmless, whereas a man is seen as a potential danger, which is probably why all the kids shows only have lesbians :/

Helen_Cheddar

I mean maybe 10+ years ago, but I’ve actually seen a lot of representation recently. Game of Thrones, Dr. Who, and Deadpool are just some examples of media featuring bi guys.

jer487

Deadpool is pan but in the movies it's mostly just random comments here and there and he's mostly straight to be honest.

[deleted]

Also recently released Netflix show The Sandman where the entire universe is anything but straight and reproduction seemingly only happens in dreams because that's the only place you'll be able to find another straight person. Basically every male character is either gay or bi. Was a good watch though.

marks716

Hahaha yes it’s either a gay male version of a minstrel show or it’s like Dumbledore where they say “oh yeah he was gay I guess” like 6 years after the series was over.

jeffyjoe12

yeah my conspiracy is that lesbian relationships appeal to both lesbians, creepy old dudes, and they get free PR.

have you seen "Our Flag Means Death"? if not, why have you not yet seen it? also Star Trek Discovery has some good rep, especially in season 4.

tittychittybangbang

There is fucking loads of LGBT representation in tv, I just started that new Sandman show on Netflix and the main character is a gay man. Shameless has gay and trans, there’s an entire LGBT section on Netflix AND on Disney plus. Will in stranger things is CLEARLY in love with Mike and that annoying girl is a lesbian, Sex Education has gay guys. B99, has gay people and Rosa is bi. Peep show, Jez is proudly bisexual. It’s Always Sunny has Mac and focuses on LGBT issues. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, gay main character. Uncoupled is a new show just released with Neil Patrick Harris. The Walking Dead has Tara and Aaron, Euphoria, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I can go on! what more do you want lmao

_Mangoes

I feel like down voating, not cause you say something I disagree with, just because you called Robin from Stranger Things annoying xD

history-something

Also annoying "gay" accent that no member of the lgbt community has

King9217

One of my friends actually does have the accent idk how or why but they do

[deleted]

A lot of gay people do gradually develop the accent. I think it's a way to alert other gays to your gayness without having to go around explicitly saying "I'm gay" all the time

Hazarawn

Same

drecais

Gay lisp is real and well documented actually

MahamidMayhem

Lmao what, it is very prevalent in a lot of gay people.

Guiltspoon

I worked in Provincetown it's very much present. Might have something to do with being a group of gay men but it was like 50/50 if they did the accent.

HaxboyYT

Nah I think that one’s kinda true

BIueBlaze

Plenty of gay men do.

prince_krab

I've met a number of Gay men who have/use that accent, that's how I initially found out they were gay.
