If this applies to any written media (and it does just say "when you read" not "when you read *a book*") then you could write something you always wanted to experience and then just read it.
Combine this with never sleeping and you can use your free time to write the story of your dreams, then you can have the best weekend ever, living it out. Alternately, you can use the ability to be able to read 500 pages in an hour (8 pages a minute) and presuming the "Virtual Reality" acts in accordance to the in-universe time of what you're reading, live through a week's worth of adventure in only 1 real life hour!
That's what I'm talking about. Books are already free at the library, and I don't want every book I read to be a virtual reality experience. That sounds terrifying.
You can still sleep if you pick B. It says āyou never HAVE to sleepā. It doesnāt say you canāt if you want to.
B is an OP selection. It also doesnāt say you have to be reading to avoid sleep. Think of all the things you could get done if you didnāt sleep, including read!
I'm with you. I am now free to only sleep when I want, but I'm still resentful my brain needs sleep. A few hours of intense concentration and I have to take a nap. True, libraries have large numbers of books, but they rarely have the kinds of things I want to read, which tend to sell at $50-$500 a book.
I got this too. I like sleeping, I can read a 500 page book fast enough, and reading is already like vr for me. Especially something like a King book, I'm not turning pages and seeing words, I'm in the story hearing the dialog and seeing the actions.
That leaves 5 star reads and never paying for books. Im in.
Yeah as an insomniac I really value my sleep, and I love to dream when I can. I enjoy reading in my own time too, no rush to finish anything. Not really keen on experiencing some books in VR, freaky enough just reading words on the page.
Unlimited 5 star books is enough for me.
But you wouldn't need sleep, as in you never get tired. That would be a super power. As for 5 star books, just literally read only 5 star books...I don't get that one at all, seems like a waste.
So if you only ever read 5 star books, how would that work? Does it just manipulate you into thinking terrible books are 5 stars anyway? Does it mystically rewrite bad books so they're all 5 stars if you try to read them? Or does it physically prevent you from reading anything that you wouldn't rate 5 stars? Because if it's the last one, I'd be unable to read almost anything as it's rare it give something a 5 star rating.
To me it means the universe would physically prevent me from reading anything that I wouldn't rate 5 stars anyway.
That's a good point, I can count how many books I'd rate 5 stars on my fingers, that's maybe a year or 2 of reading for me. But there's also millions of books out there I haven't read or even heard of.
C & D.
Iām assuming they mean 500 pages per hour ā not that itās only exactly 500-page books that you can read in an hour and that anything 499 pages and less or 501+ takes a ānormalā amount of time
This is the best choice. You get too read extremely quick, which means being able to read more books or a period of time. Then you never have to pay for a a physical book ever again, which means you can read any book you want and not worry about the expense.
This beats never having to sleep because it would still take several hours to read one simple book. VR reality could be cool but it also takes away from the imagination at times (this could be good with some authors) and is still a lengthy process. Though living through some books would be extremely awesome and this would definitely be my alternative pick. Every book should not be a five star read. You need the occasional bad or even good book, to really appreciate the great ones you come across.
haha I had the exact same semantic thought. I would also go c&d if it followed through that I could read a 250pg book in 30min, a 1000pg book in 2hrs etc.
A) Bad books can be educational and charming in their own way. And finding a 5 star is special so no.
B) sleep is great so no, I need my break from life.
C) why would you even want it to be over so fast? No
D) Yes, also I could get rich this way.
E) Yes, but only if I could keep reading normally if I wanted.
Yeah, thereās no way in hell Iām reading The Shining or Pet Semetary as a virtual reality experience.
Otherwise it would be a definite tie in with B.
Idk how youāre the first person that has said A&B, had to scroll way too far for this. Always reading amazing books and always feeling rested and no need to sleep sound like no brainers to me. Thatās 8 hours a day to do whatever I choose, not necessarily read. Thatās 1/3 of your life you get to live. Easy choice.
I agree! I enjoy my time reading, I don't want to be IN the book, and books are free from the library. Give me some good books and not needing to sleep please!
Yeah, I donāt want to see the woman in 217. Actually I wouldnāt want to see most of The Shining as a virtual reality experience.
Also, just finished The Bloodlands. That would be horrifying especially since it describes true events.
Realized what sub I saw this in, and
A) I donāt want to be restricted to only books some unknown goblin rated 5 stars.
B) Iāve read Insomnia. No, thank you.
D) Iām about to die, arenāt I?
E) nononononon*deep breath*nononononononono
I guess I have to pick C but Iām scared Iāve missed some blatantly evil genie trick.
E seems scary as fuck. A destroys all the other book related ones. Like who cares if they can be read fast or they cost nothing if they suck.
B just gives you god tier powers.
So A and B because they are so much better than the others.
PS - you already have D, at least in most of America. Itās a library
No contest. A and B
I love sleeping, I'm not in a hurry reading a book, and books are only a few dollars in the first place if they aren't free.
VR experience would be fun if it was optional, but are you serious? You want to feel like you're living inside every sceen of every book you read?
No contest.
B and D any day.
Okay. Hereās the thing. Does B give me the ability to overcome any sleep-deprivation triggered illnesses I may have? Is it a choice to not sleep or do I have the ability to not sleep and my brain stays normal?
B and D.
It says you don't have to sleep, it doesn't say you can't sleep.
Free books would.benefeit me in several ways. I get what I want for free, and I get rare books (to sell) for free. I'd open a used book store.
C and D. If every book is 5 stars thereās no comparison so you would never really know what is a great book anymore. I need sleep. And E! I donāt need Stephen King books in virtual reality, theyāre already scary enough!
D is a no brainer, I could get rich obtaining and reselling rare books. And I wouldn't need to sleep, so I could do this process painstakingly until a very early retirement.
Iām with you! D and E. To have all the books I want and never have to pay for them? A dream come true! To throw myself into my bookās world and experience it would be awesome - unless, of course, it was a Stephen King book!
Ya know, I didnāt even realize I was in r/stephenking until you responded! šššš¤¦š»āāļø And no, Iād probably have a heart attack if I was in a VR experience in IT! But ANY of them! Misery with Annie, Jesse in Geraldās Game, Christine, Pet Semitary, The Langoliers, Cujo - pick any of them. The only one that might be cool would be Elevation. Or even Fairy Tale. Can you tell I love the earlier books more?
B and C.
I don't sleep well as is, and would love to read more volume.
I kind of like reading bad books, it makes me appreciate the good ones more. Plenty of free or cheap ways to read. While VR sounds cool, it could also be fucking horrifying and traumatizing.
B and C.
A sounds like I lose critical thinking.
D isn't worth it because I go to the library a lot so I already pay for very few books.
And books are already like virtual reality experiences.
A and B, no contest.
I'm going to assume the way this works is that if I try to read any book that I wouldn't rate 5 stars, the universe will conspire to prevent it. And that although I don't HAVE to sleep, I can still CHOOSE to sleep. I love sleep but I would also love if my body didn't require like 9 hours to feel fully functional.
B and D
I can already read pretty fast (not that fast, but fast enough).
I have a pretty solid imagination, so everything already *is* like VR.
I already can't sleep most of the time, so not needing it at all would be excellent. Look at all this free time!
Some books are better than others, it's just the truth.
I must admit that I would *deeply* enjoy never paying for a book again. I read often, and often read more than one book at a time.
A & C. I can smash through lots of awesome books really fast
Not B, I like sleeping, and being able to read really fast helps me fit books in my normal reading time
Not D, I already get all my books free from the library
Not E, I already like the reading experience as it is, my imagination does a pretty good job, also I can watch film adaptations if I need more
Definitely not B and C.
Definitely A.
I guess the free books is the second one; I don't need to speed read good books, I'm doing it for fun. You guys are reading for fun, right?
A and C. It's so disappointing starting a book that sounds amazing only to have issues and get bored with it. And I've got ADHD so reading is a struggle and often I can't focus for a long amount of time so being able to read that quickly? Yes, please! Also people don't get that the 500 pages in 60 minutes can translate to 250 pages on 30 minutes and so on and so forth.
B and E
Would get to live in the world.
Is it a virtual reality of exactly what the author intended or does it come from MY imagination or how does it work?
I never *have* to sleep...but I can if I want, right? My body still has the same energy either way but if I really want to nap a bit I can? If so that's my pick.
A and D. I do want every book to be amazing, but I don't wamt to rush through it. Like a good meal, I want to go slower and truly enjoy it. I do like sleeping, and a good enough book will feel like VR. I get books for myself from the public library so I already don't pay for physical books, but I have a 1 year old and would love to get kids picture books for free.
A and B. C doesn't matter much to me if it isn't enjoyable. D is nice but I'd like to support the authors and books are relatively cheap. E seems weird since reading is more immersive to me than VR ever is, plus it implies that the way characters and settings look are set in stone and not up to interpretation anymore, kind of like a movie adaptation.
I donāt understand why people are even saying D. We have libraries. You literally already never have to pay for a physical book again. This is so easily the last answer unless you want to just have bookshelves of books to look at
B,
And D if it means we get to keep the books and do what we want with them ā¦ go into rare bookshops, acquire valuable first editions and sell them - get rich!
Definitely D. I just $118 at one bookstore today (used) & $30 at another (used). I already have a very fast reading speed and I see the book as a "movie" while I'm reading. I also sleep very little. All of King's books are five star to me. Other authors may not be as good, but do that's okay. I just donate the duds.
C and E. Then I can read more books before the need to sleep in general. I could read (and see in VR) IT in a little over two hoursā¦ That being said i think that one scene would be problematic, might shut the VR off for that one š
B and C for me. I don't get to read much anymore and have to consume when I'm on the road and between phone calls. I'd almost sell a part of my body just to have the time to sit down with a book again
A and D. I like sleeping and Iām scared that one would be one of those āI didnāt say you didnāt NEED sleepā or something. Not C because I like to spend hours reading, itās fun. And not E because I like the experience I already get when I read
C and D.
It's going to help a lot with university!
Not every book has to be five stars: some of them reason less within us than others, time and circumstances may alter what we feel about a book. And this is good: this is how we are different from each other and know which books are more significant or which ones we like the most.
If every book was a fine star reading there wouldn't be special ones anymore.
B and D for me. If I donāt have to sleep, I donāt need to read fast, free books are awesome, trash books just hit the spot sometimes, and Iāve already a pretty vivid imagination when Iām reading. Not sure Iād want the full VR experience.
I'll take C and D.
At first, I was thinking A and D. But I think you need bad and okay books to appreciate the truly great books. If every book is 5 stars, then what is a great book??
I love sleeping, so no thanks to B.
I like horror and misery in my books, but I don't want a VR experience of them, ta very much, so bye E.
I have more books on my wishlisht than I'll ever be able to read in my lifetime. So being able to get through 500 pages in an hour (I assume while still absorbing everything the way you do at your normal pace, of course), and not have to pay for them. Yes, please!
B and E
>E VR Pennywise chasing me is the last thing I want. Lol
If this applies to any written media (and it does just say "when you read" not "when you read *a book*") then you could write something you always wanted to experience and then just read it. Combine this with never sleeping and you can use your free time to write the story of your dreams, then you can have the best weekend ever, living it out. But what about a secks book š
Right?!
Yes. I agree. And the key part is it says you never have to sleep, which I interpret to mean I could still sleep if I wanted to.
I second this!
But sleeping is kind of giving you the experience of E.
Bacon and Eggs, all day baby.
Going along with this, the perfect choice.
D & E
Samesies
This is the way.
Iām with you
B and C.
Iād catch up on so many books and no longer be bothered be pesky sleep?! Perfect!
That's what I'm talking about. Books are already free at the library, and I don't want every book I read to be a virtual reality experience. That sounds terrifying.
Yup. Imagine reading It in less than 2 1/2 hours.
The only correct answer
A and E.
Hi new friend!
Hello new friend! š
Hi Friends!
This is my way too. Every book is an amazing long strange trip.
B and D
sleep is GREAT
Getting back the 1/3 of a day I waste at work is great too lol It also says never have to, not can't
Who needs work if you get books for free. Gimme all the signed copies and I'll open a marketplace. Work?
Good point. š
True true. I retract my statement
You can still sleep if you pick B. It says āyou never HAVE to sleepā. It doesnāt say you canāt if you want to. B is an OP selection. It also doesnāt say you have to be reading to avoid sleep. Think of all the things you could get done if you didnāt sleep, including read!
What's the point in reading that fast, when you're reading for fun?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'm with you. I am now free to only sleep when I want, but I'm still resentful my brain needs sleep. A few hours of intense concentration and I have to take a nap. True, libraries have large numbers of books, but they rarely have the kinds of things I want to read, which tend to sell at $50-$500 a book.
C and E, easy. I already have more books than I'll be able to read in a lifetime. I like sleeping. And I don't need every book to be five stars.
I second this a lot actually
A and D

Same. I like the process of reading an unfolding story - I donāt need it to go faster.
That's a good point, I can count how many books I'd rate 5 stars on my fingers, that's maybe a year or 2 of reading for me. But there's also millions of books out there I haven't read or even heard of.
But it says you donāt have to sleep. Which means you still canā¦ not sure how thatād work in this magical universe.
Yep, same here.
Yup, yup.
Theres alot of king books I wouldnt want to be in virtual reality for
Yeah, the Outsider immediately came to mind. No thanks. VR Geraldās Game experience? Iām out.
C & D. Iām assuming they mean 500 pages per hour ā not that itās only exactly 500-page books that you can read in an hour and that anything 499 pages and less or 501+ takes a ānormalā amount of time
This is the best choice. You get too read extremely quick, which means being able to read more books or a period of time. yes that makes way more sense Iād switch to E and C then ngl
haha I had the exact same semantic thought.
No D) Yes, also I could get rich this way. E) Yes, but only if I could keep reading normally if I wanted.
So rich. I love your explanation and choices
Yeah, thereās no way in hell Iām reading The Shining or Pet Semetary as a virtual reality experience. Otherwise it would be a definite tie in with B.
A n B. E sounds intriguing, but I read too much horror. That would not be fun
Idk how youāre the first person that has said A&B, had to scroll way too far for this. Always reading amazing books and always feeling rested and no need to sleep sound like no brainers to me. B & D
A & D I'm poor
B & D. No question.
D and e are where it's at.
E seems scary as fuck. A destroys all the other book related ones. Like who cares if they can be read fast or they cost nothing if they suck. B just gives you god tier powers. So A and B because they are so much better than the others. PS - you already have D, at least in most of America. Itās a library
No contest. A and B I love sleeping, I'm not in a hurry reading a book, and books are only a few dollars in the first place if they aren't free. VR experience would be fun if it was optional, but are you serious? You want to feel like you're living inside every sceen of every book you read? No contest.

Iām always in a state of B already.
E and B, am ready for Ready Player One level V.R.
C and D. If every book is 5 stars thereās no comparison so you would never really know what is a great book anymore. I need sleep. And E! I donāt need Stephen King books in virtual reality, theyāre already scary enough!
A and D
D is a no brainer, I could get rich obtaining and reselling rare books. And I wouldn't need to sleep, so I could do this process painstakingly until a very early retirement.
B and C
Why is B in the list
C and D
B & D fosho
D & E. I have aphantasia so it could really boost my excitement.
b and e
Iām with you! D and E. To have all the books I want and never have to pay for them? A dream come true! To throw myself into my bookās world and experience it would be awesome - unless, of course, it was a Stephen King book!
Imagine being in a VR experience in the IT book.
C and E. Give me all the stimulation
D is plenty.
I guess B and C. Iād pick C and D, as they pair well, but I donāt have the space for infinite physical books.j
Iām a kindle reader so I donāt mind not having D. I switched to C and E
A and D
A and E. What other combo could anybody possibly want?
C all day
A&C provided library is still allowed. Not sure if virtual reality is s good idea in this sub. š³š¤.
D and E
D and E
Iād add āEvery time you re-read a book you experience it like itās your first timeā
C & E, lots of books and essentially a movie version of each. Sign me up.
This is weird cuz four of these are reading related exclusively and then B is just a high tier life improvement superpower.
This is a tough one, but Iād pick C and E
B and D I can already read pretty fast (not that fast, but fast enough). I have a pretty solid imagination, so everything already *is* like VR. Just B is fine by me.
E is already kind of true, itās called imagination With the sleep one, do you still get tired? Because if not thatās my pick 100%
A & C. D and E
C and D
B and Dā¦ Iām an insomniac so it would be nice if I had a proper reason for not sleepingā¦

A and D. Definitely not E.
E and itās not close. Are you kidding me?
B and C

A&D
A and C. It's so disappointing starting a book that sounds amazing only to have issues and get bored with it. B and E ā¤ļø
A and C for me!
B and D. I can buy as many books as i want AND i have more time reading them. Win win.
B and E Would get to live in the world. Is it a virtual reality of exactly what the author intended or does it come from MY imagination or how does it work?
A and E, fucl< B
B and D, never pay for a book, get all the college books and infinite number of times and resell them
A and D.
I never *have* to sleep...but I can if I want, right? My body still has the same energy either way but if I really want to nap a bit I can? If so that's my pick.
B and C* as long as you can retain that information! E sounds like too much fun. Would consume my entire life.
I picked A & E I sorta already have B
B and d. Iām gonna be the next Amazon.
C and E. Learning would be easier I think.
C and D, no question
D & E. Iād definitely need more than an hour (for C) to get over some of the deaths King has put me through.
D and e please!
A and D. I do want every book to be amazing, but I don't wamt to rush through it. Like a good meal, I want to go slower and truly enjoy it. Oh man gotta be B for sure, the other is tight, but Iād say E
C and E. Then I can read more books before the need to sleep in general. I could read (and see in VR) IT in a little over two hoursā¦ That being said i think that one scene would be problematic, might shut the VR off for that one š
D and E
A and B. Always guaranteed a good read and lots of time to do it.
B and C for me. I don't get to read much anymore and have to consume when I'm on the road and between phone calls. I'd almost sell a part of my body just to have the time to sit down with a book again
Never *have* to sleep is the key part here for me.
A and B
C and D
A and D. I like sleeping and Iām scared that one would be one of those āI didnāt say you didnāt NEED sleepā or something. Not C because I like to spend hours reading, itās fun. And not E because I like the experience I already get when I read
Just give me C. Thatās all I think I need. (I enjoy sleeping too much, lol, to give it up.)
E!
B and C
D and E.
D and E
B and literally anything else? The other options are nice. Who the heck ain't picking B?
A and E. I would say D, but I don't trust myself to contain my own greed. Quality over quantity, amirite?
A and B cause all my books are hand me downs and I donāt want to choose C
C and E for me āŗļø
I'll take C and D. At first, I was thinking A and D. But I think you need bad and okay books to appreciate the truly great books. If every book is 5 stars, then what is a great book?? I love sleeping, so no thanks to B. I like horror and misery in my books, but I don't want a VR experience of them, ta very much, so bye E. I have more books on my wishlisht than I'll ever be able to read in my lifetime. So being able to get through 500 pages in an hour (I assume while still absorbing everything the way you do at your normal pace, of course), and not have to pay for them. Yes, please!
C & D
C and D thanks
C
A and E is a crazy combo
