Eating it puts 15 seconds of oxygen in the tank, similar to consuming the oxygen from the Air Bladder.
Great to carry at least one if you’re going into a large wreck or some other confusing enclosed space, just in case you get lost inside.
well, true its technically a survival game
but when you've completed the game once, you realize the building aspect of the game is is properly amazing.
it's time consuming so there come the mods
I'm playing on Switch. My first console was NES so I really can't get over how awesome it is to play these massively complicated games like No Man's Sky anywhere I want.
Anything in your inventory adds to your encumbered weight though—it’s just that the tanks are uniquely heavy.
But I’ve often noticed that hauling an entire inventory full of metal salvage slows you down a lot. So does carrying, say, the stasis rifle, a propulsion cannon, and the seaglide all at once.
The speedrun I saw uses two 90 sec tanks, switching it out most of the way into the blackout timer. My guess is these little guys are unreliable to catch for a speedrun and "catching" the 9 resources you need for an extra tank is more reliable.
Eating raw fish does reduce hydration. Most raw fish, as long as they’re not dead and rotting, do still give you some nutrition. The bladderfish only gives +6 nutrition raw, though, where it gives +16 cooked.
I think that’s the lowest ratio in terms of nutrition raw vs. cooked for the fish, however.
The peeper also gives around the same nutrition raw, but +33 or something like that (?) (+32?) cooked.
And yeah, I think even though a raw bladderfish gives you something like 7 seconds O2, it costs you at least 7 or more hydration.
There are plenty of animals from different animal classes that have symbiotic relationships, an example of fish are sharks and those little fishes that you sometimes see suction cupped to the bottom of it. So fish can have symbiotic relationships, that being said there is an argument to be made that floaters don’t fall under the class of fish and may be more closer to jellyfish or other class of jellyfish like creatures.
I’m like 99% sure jelly fish don’t fall under the class of fish but I could be wrong. There are many animals with the names or class of other animals in there name, but they are not actually that animal or in that class. All it takes is a simple google search
To be fair, the “class” of fish is incredibly broad and contains a lot of very distantly related organisms—and this makes it confusing.
It’s rooted in outdated taxonomy from the 19th and early 20th centuries—we know more about convergent evolution now and how analogous structures can develop in organisms that are distantly related genetically—and many organisms that we classify as fish are very distantly related indeed.
So the shark and the ray (including stingrays) are both considered bony “fish” here on earth—despite having very little in common genetically with, say, a salmon.
I think from what I can see of the lore in Subnautica, the rays on Planet 4546B likely wouldn’t get classified as fish at all by earth taxonomical standards. (Interesting, maybe just to me).
But yeah—a jellyfish is, taxonomically, not a fish. Never has been. And the floaters in Subnautica wouldn’t be either—they’re invertebrates too.
100% right. And yes it is very interesting, especially when talking about aliens (tho realistically all our earth classifications and so on would be thrown out the window) but it’s always cool to speculate. And yes that’s an amazing point they are invertebrates. I didn’t even think of that lol
Oh, I’m with you on the complexities of speculative xenobiology/ that we’d have to throw out earth’s taxonomies.
Although admittedly earth’s taxonomies are… not always perfect to begin with.
But yeah… I’m forgetting what the precise language is vis a vis the colony part of the floater life form and the “core creature” or whatever you’d want to call it (idk what the PDA says) that makes up the parasitic host.
Obviously we don’t have organisms that contain or produce helium naturally here though! (That I know of? It’d be cool if there were some on earth… I guess. Or just. Sequestering helium somehow).
What you described is mutualism, not symbiosis. Each can survive without the other but they mutually benefit from each other. A remora can attach itself to any number large swimming creatures, not necessary just a shark or a whale. They can also hunt on their own. Coral are actually a symbiotic animal. They are animals with photosynthetic algae that live in their tissues. And if the coral bleaches it often dies and if the coral dies the algae also dies. Thats symbiosis. They cannot live without each other.
This is just wrong. Symbiosis is any relationship between between two different species. Predation is a form of symbiotic relationship. The term you’re looking for is “obligate symbiote” which means it can’t live without the other. Like tube worms and their chemosynthetic bacteria in their trophosome
Source: Biology Undergrad
To add onto this, the different forms of symbiosis can be categorized into how they affect one species and how they affect the other.
Plus is good, minus is bad, 0 is nothing significant happens. There’s:
Mutualism +/+
Herbivory/predation +/-
Parisitism/parasitoidism -/+
Competition -/-
Commensalism +/0
Ammensalism -/0
Fwiw, the prehistoric floaters I think are canonically obligate symbiotes. Colonies of single celled parasitic organisms that have for extended periods of time lived together and likely could not separate—to the point that they function as a single entity more than as individuals.
Putting it in a moonpool, then dropping them of inside. A bit finicky, but eventually it works. Or I just squeeze the prawn into a cave and do the s stick in there. Sometimes I get yeeted into the lava zone doing that
The PDA makes it pretty clear that, taxonomically, the type of organism the floater is is not a fish.
But it’s an aquatic organism 🤷🏼 it’s a fish in the same way a clam is a fish. Or an octopus. Or a whale. 😉
Bladderfish is definitely the most versatile and is fantastic early game for water.
However I've never used an air bladder, I've never eaten them for oxygen (though I could've used it a time or two), and once you have alien containment and water filtration machines, Reginald becomes way more useful. Put two in a tank for limitless food supply, water filtration machine gives you water and salt so you can cure the Reginald for later.
Not denying these facts at all, clearly it is superior for use however it is ugly so I prefer to gather them for use only and I put cute little eyeye's on display.
Reginald all the way. Slow enough you can catch it however sleep deprived you are (7 hours into a Subnautica stint? Don't worry. Reggies are slower more nutritious peepers). Appear at super low depths to sustain you late in game
It's only really great for the oxygen and the flotation device (now that it doesn't suck anymore).
It's a lesser source of food and water, and there are better options for both.
Might me useful for new players maybe?
Yes , it has a lot of stats , but they're all mid/low. If you are not playing for the first time , I don't see any reason to even catch bladders.
Bleach water is at least two times better than bladder for early game. Late game you have the filtration system water. So why even bother?
Same with food , it gives almost no nutritional value , so the only reason to eat it is if you're in a pinch and have the heat blade.
The oxygen part is very very situational. It could help you ,but chasing that thing for a 15 o2 is not worth it.
As for the bioreactor , no. Simply useless. It's not a good thing to put in there , given the time spend collecting them. Either put plant pots with fruits around the reactor , or just make an outside growbed with gelsacks - which are one of the best sources of energy for the BR.
So in short , it has a lot of uses , but nobody uses them , so it's basically useless. Even lorewise it is not the "best" fish.
The bladder fish is so useful and necessary to my early survival that I always make sure to eventually build a water filtration machine so I don't have to consume them. And then I usually feature them in an aquarium or alien containment out of respect. They're too useful and cool to not do so.
One time I cooked two or three of these in desperation and for the rest of the game they were gone. Weirdest glitch and it suck trying to make water out of coral.
I relied on these fish for my entire playthrough for water. Just catch a ton and stock up, then retry later....honestly should have built a water filtration unit sooner.
I mean yeah, but that’s the problem. It’s kinda like a Swiss Army knife, it’s ok at doing a bunch of things but it’s not the best at doing all those things
I like the scavenger fish, I forget the name, who live in the green kell after the metal. They PLAY with the metal and they leave you alone as long as you don't touch their metal 🥹

The hoverfish is so god damn cute I can't bring myself to eat it, which is pretty advantageous for its survival.
Against humans that can perceive cuteness yes. Against a 55 metre long, pure muscle death machine? Not so much.
It doesn't matter. If you can be the pet of the species thats on top of the food chain, then ur saved.
Tru but there’s no guarantee that your species will survive
With the hoverfish motivating me you bet your ass im at the top of the foodchain
Hell yeah- hoverfish believes in you!
Pretty sure Maida’s at the top of the foodchain. Not much you can do about it.
I’m the one at the top of the food chain here I’m made out of cheese 53x stronger than plasteel and my pet is the sea dragon
Oh cool pet but too scary. My pet is the Hoverfish Garry. [Look at his lil face he's so cute](https://imgur.com/a/IumDgk7) :]
yeah, they always have that cute smile too. with the alien containment, I caused an overpopulation of hoverfish in my game
Oh the lunch I ordered is here
I hope my time capsule lands on your skull and crushes your balls
Checkmate I’m a inter dimensional hyper demon and I don’t have testiculars
You still have a skull tho? Oh sorry I mean "used to".
No I have no skull I’m made out of undying flame and darkness
Never had someone describe my genitals so perfectly, it's almost scary.
I feed them to the Mesmers
Reginald Gives 44 Food (of course when cooked/cured) as compared to peeper’s 32 food value (cooked/cured)
Love me a nice smokey reginald. I keep ~40 in my containment at all times
Reaper * Is cute * Is friend shaped * Is fluffy * Is cute
Also Reapers love to give hugs
Also tasty
and if it bites you, you don't have to worry about all of the things that bladder fish provides.
• has a butt chin

Or... Hear me out.. or.. you could carry 2 tanks of extra air. Just saying.
The devs thought of that. Each tank in your inventory slows your swimming speed.
They also take up a ridiculous amount of your inventory
not if you use mods
Modding a survival game to make it less survival, mhm mhm
well, true its technically a survival game but when you've completed the game once, you realize the building aspect of the game is is properly amazing. it's time consuming so there come the mods

That… doesn’t stop it from being a fish….
What ever floats your boat I suppose.
I love breaking subnautica, and floaters are just perfect for it. And yes, they will float my cyclops 300 metres away and detonate it.
Or yeet my prawn into orbit.
Or clip my sea moth into the centre of the Aroura.
How the fuck did you get them to stick to a prawn? When I try they just bounce off
Putting it in a moonpool, then dropping them of inside. A bit finicky, but eventually it works. Or I just squeeze the prawn into a cave and do the s stick in there. Sometimes I get yeeted into the lava zone doing that

Not denying the supremacy of the floater though. Float everything. I, for one, welcome the sweet embrace of our parasitic, invertebrate overlords.
You got angry at me for starting a Mesmer cult you started a floater cult
All jokes mostly At least on my part I also think floaters are kind of whatever. And Mesmers Are annoying, but so pretty. So 🤷🏼
What kind of psychopath would cook this
The one in desperate times
Nah bro I prefer losing a hard save than eat that
Hardcore mode should include this
Uhh ok you do you ig
Me that’s who
Holy Jesus Go away you demon
I’m the one who started a Mesmer cult I’m more than a demon
Ok good for you
You call people to ask their phone number
Ok good good
Your sins will be forgiven if you join our lord and saviour Mesmer
All of my sins ?
Yes
You promise?
Yes I promise and also you can mind control a sea dragon if your loyal enough.
Hmmm let me think
Only the sort of person who’d start a Mesmer cult would use this as a diss 😒
Bruh you sound like how dust tastes
It’s true!

Floaters bc they are the forbidden fleshlight

Reginald is better for cooking/curing, Bleach is better for water, Oculus is better for bioreactor
You know how it goes, jack of all trades, master of none
Fair
Who’s reginald
That fish that spawns in the Grassy Plateaus, green with a pink(ish) fin
cuddle fish egg is better for bioreactor

YOURE ALL MONSTERS
Do you have a moment to talk about the living god Mesmer?
Usefulness: Bladderfish Cuteness: hoverfish
Hands down the peeper is best fish
False.
the best fish is the big water lizard that lives in the funny cave
cuddlefish pros: cuddles cons: none the choice is clear

Wait eating it raw provides oxygen how did I never know this
Wait... Eating it raw.... GIVES YOU OXYGEN?!?! Today I learned lol
The Oculus is cute tho
The Stalker. It's cuter.
It’s immediately visible and simple to find apart from other fish. Only exception is when it turns sideways and disappears :p
EDIT: *It can be put in the bio-reactor guilt free*
I only drink this and eat Reginalds, so this is a solid number 2 since making water with bleach is more efficient and water purifiers exist.
Not denying these facts at all, clearly it is superior for use however it is ugly so I prefer to gather them for use only and I put cute little eyeye's on display.
You said you'd wait but you didn't wait at all!
Hoverfish is friend, not food
It's so good that it's something fishy about it. Yes I'm a dad..
Hoverfish funni

If this game had realistic fish populations, these things would be extinct within a few hours of playtime.
It is also funny that they are even hanging out in the Tree Cove area. I wouldn’t expect them to be that deep.
Hoverfish -is adorable
I like Reginal
I can‘t believe it‘s not water
It gives you a bacterial infection
Had no idea on the O2 bit.
The hover fish and cute fish are better for the bioreactor
Cuddlefish. Reasoning: its just a lil guy

none, i play as vegetarian now
Do mini fish respawn?
I seem to have eaten them all.
If you are out here doing anything with bladderfish isn't either making it into water or a flotation device you should be considered as downright evil as the mfs who eat pasta with ketchup.
Hoverfish because yes
Nah, Reginald better
The hover fish is in my opinion even cuter than the cuddle fish, but the bladder fish is definitely more useful
Yes each way we torture or mistreat this poor being can give different proffit!
