This tattoo would have looked significantly better placed somewhere else - like your inside forearm. Placement can really make or break a tattoo. It feels and looks so random on the ribs.
I do also agree with the people saying it'll be a black blob in a few years.
It does look like the piece was done by someone who tattoos well.

Or he actually is still thriving at 92 now haha. Don't mess with the artwork from the death my friend
Placement is important for overall appearance. The rib cage is a large canvas with a lot of "real estate" and a beautiful curve. Tattoos that appeal to the natural curvature of the land space are just a little more appealing. There's also an argument for getting ink in places that makes sense, hence the "nipple is the third eye" comment that I read on this thread.
I believe overall the sentiment regarding placement is that this piece is a little underwhelming for such a large area and leaves little room for additions in the future without a need for modification.

Sorry someone is calling you bullshit names for a band tat. For what it's worth I agree with others that you should consider asking your artist to highlight white in some places for the longevity of that tat but personally I think syn protection and lotion use once it's healed are most important. If you don't gain a ton of weight it should not be altered over time too weirdly.
Also worth noting - people in this sub forget that tattoos are a thing you get that most people are able to keep for their whole life. A piece of art that can't be stolen, lost, or ruined usually. It ages with you, and that is part of the reason they're endearing to those of us who have them!
Sometimes when translating from paper art to skin art it's better to make slight variations. The black here is very heavy and will only blend together more with time. Some grey work and shading could have helped this piece IMHO but the important thing is that you love your tattoo because it's your body.
Edit: additionally this is not your fault, the artist should have explained this to you and offered some options

Absolutely the artist should have informed the client that a graywash will hold the details for longevity. This harsh black blast is gonna show the outline verses filler (hope the artist used a uniform technique or it will fade into scribbles).
I give it 5 years before you need a cover up. It’s not bad it’s just gonna age like shit…sadly I’m speaking from experience and a lesson learned personally.
Because I just like how it looked we had placed it a few times, but that spot looked the best. The picture looks weird because I’m like bending but when I’m just standing in front of a mirror looks really cool.

Edit: tattoos won’t “spread out” unless it was jacked up to begin with, but this looks like it was done properly.
