Blankets are supposed to isolate you from the air of the room, so the stuff inside the blanket is heated up by your own body heat.
Aluminum is a heat conductor, so this would work as an anti-blanket. Above a certain temperature tho, this would start having the opposite effect, just like fans.
Aluminum is light as all hell, this "blanket" wouldnt be much heavier than the average thick winter blanket, not to mention it would be uncomfortable and extremely prone to bending and distortion as aluminum is a very maleable and soft metal.
One roll over would crush this thing
Edit: I work with this stuff every day and have for the last 10 years.
The wire pictured isnt even 1/8 in diameter, at most its 3/16 but most likely 5/32. A 10 year old could wrap this around a pencil
depends on the thickness of it really, have you done the maths and taken into account wire thickness, and the number of rings? love to see your workings
I'm thinking a plate of aluminum would be better since it would have more contact area since it would smoosh you and spread you out over a bigger area. But yeah, above ~98F it would start to heat us instead of cool us.
EDIT: I'm still not convinced chainmail would even be effective at room temperature and especially at higher temperatures. Our body has it's own cooling mechanism that is being blocked since our skin wouldn't be exposed to the air in the portions contact by the aluminum. Air flow would also be partially blocked to the skin in portions that is still exposed. The efficiency of chainmail will decrease as the temp approaches ~98F, eventually turning in to a heater. While our skin can still cool us adequately in excess of 100F depending on humidity. Overall this seems like an awful idea for most conditions.
> plate of aluminum would be better since it would have more contact area since it would smoosh you and spread you out over a bigger area.
You would be a 2D image.
A plate of aluminum or even aluminum foil would be awful because it would just trap all the moisture in. It's essentially an emergency blanket which is made from mylar and an extremely thin layer of aluminum.
Yeah but like I mentioned, a plate of aluminum is good because you'd be spread out over like 30ft^2 and in direct contact so you'd have a lot of area to dissipate what remains of your heat. I agree aluminum foil would be bad because you'd still retain your original human shape and have bad surface contact.
Isn't 98°F (had to convert to Celsius, it says 36,6°C) quite exactly our body temperature? The chainmail makes more sense then, because it wouldn't isolate...
I love weighted blankets, and this seems like the perfect solution from about May-September where I live where it just gets too hot for a weighted blanket.
A lot of the time I don't need the heat and would be more comfortable without a blanket but I still use one because I feel vulnerable without one. Feeling vulnerable is the whole point behind weighted blankets.
Try a weighted blanket first. Although it won’t have the same heating and cooling properties. Ever get x-rays at the dentist and they toss that lead apron on to you before they get the heck out of there? Feels like that.
blanket weighted with glass beads are a thing. Few years ago you could only get them from specialty medical equipment stores $$$$. But now you can get them anywhere really. Like IKEA
used for adhd or autism i think
They vary significantly in quality. If anyone goes this route, make sure to get one that has small quilted sections. The ones with 4" pockets are nearly useless
Aluminum mail is pretty light and won't pinch, and will definitely keep you cool, but it's going to turn everything it touches grey. A dull stone grey, specifically, not a bright cheerful aluminum grey. It's non-toxic (or at least, non-bio-available), but still probably a bad idea for several reasons.
Ah yes, the body pillow for medieval nuts. Nothing says "passionate" more than having a part of your subjects of interest being right next to you as you go to sleep.
I mean it works perfectly fine if the ghost only had a knife (the chainmail is light while still slash and a bit stab resistance), but wouldn't recommend it if they bring axe causes it'll be useless.
I've thought of doing this but I would want to use small rings so fingers don't get caught in it, but that would make it take much longer.
If this comment gets more than 1k upvotes, I'll do it and document the process

How much time does it take to deburr it so it doesn't get caught on your clothes or fleshy bits? I feel like that's a critical requirement for a blanket.
Raw aluminum will turn your clothes, skin, and bedding a dull stone grey. I might recommend a steel with high aluminum content if possible, but that'll be heavier and require more grip strength to construct. Get a test patch before you commit to the full project!
From what I understand making chainmail is basically super tedious knitting. Easier that the metal being used is aluminum instead of iron or steel rings.
You could either by a could spools of aluminum wire and make the loops yourself or order a ton of aluminum rings and make it in your spare time. In like 6 months you could have the blanket for a couple hundred bucks
Honestly, 4-in-1 like that is super easy, it's just time consuming. While it's much more expensive to buy rings, making them yourself is a huge pain in the ass. Also, if you're going aluminum, you'll probably want anodized rings.
Hmm…
Slice proof blanket, from now nobody will cut you up in your sleep, now available for only (for what price you sell those?), because no money is worth getting cut to pieces in your sleep
Look up European 4 in 1. It's not tough, but it can be monotonous. Amazon sells chainmail links by Chainmail Joe pretty cheap. I don't work in aluminum as it's too fragile but I would think stainless steel, which I normally work in would be way too heavy.
Chainmail rings usually open, when gravity pulls on the combined weight of the armour while you're wearing it. As a blanket, the rings are oriented more parallel to the ground (perpendicular to the direction of gravity) and most of the rings are lying on either the bed or the sleeper.
Also: making chainmail is a common form of stimming or keeping your hands occupied for a lot of us neurospicy people, who like to have something to show for with their stimming, so wasting time might be an intended part of the process
How do people like weighted blankets
They give me full blown panic attacks , I could never fall asleep with someone touching me etc, even my cats can’t sleep with me haha. Idk how people can fall asleep with weight on them
I know weighted blankets are used by people with autism or something like that, but it does sound comforting. I'd just be worried about it scuffing up the rest of the bed.
For one-quarter the price of this thing you can buy a weighted cooling blanket that won't oxidize and leave black spots on your skin or clothing.
This is the dumbest idea I've seen in a long time.
Making chainmail is not hard at all, but it’s an extremely tedious, monotone and long process. I’ve never had patience to make something bigger than a belt.
This definitely isn’t aluminum welding wire. Best to use would be TIG rod, but it’s not strong enough to manipulate into a European 4 in 1 without whatever rings you made opening back up. It doesn’t have the aluminum sheen either. That’s stainless steel and whoever wrote the post has never tried crafting with aluminum wire.

Im actually curious about this as a blanket. Makes sense
Blankets are supposed to isolate you from the air of the room, so the stuff inside the blanket is heated up by your own body heat. Aluminum is a heat conductor, so this would work as an anti-blanket. Above a certain temperature tho, this would start having the opposite effect, just like fans.
That’s the point. The comfort of the blanket’s weight, without keeping you warm.
Aluminum is light as all hell, this "blanket" wouldnt be much heavier than the average thick winter blanket, not to mention it would be uncomfortable and extremely prone to bending and distortion as aluminum is a very maleable and soft metal. One roll over would crush this thing Edit: I work with this stuff every day and have for the last 10 years. The wire pictured isnt even 1/8 in diameter, at most its 3/16 but most likely 5/32. make it out of depleted uranium then
The only problem uranium has is that its quite heavy
And delicious
But ur blanket will glow.
Only in water
Well ... pee detector then
Nitey Knight
Lead?
How about osmium
It would probably keep you warm for the rest of your life though
true...
depends on the thickness of it really, have you done the maths and taken into account wire thickness, and the number of rings? love to see your workings
That much aluminum would actually weigh quite a bit. Several pounds
Aren’t most weighted blankets using like 20+ LB of ~~lead~~ glass/plastic/steel pellets.
Lead blanket, nice and soft, does poison damage to all that attempt to attack whilst you sleep.
The larger the plate, the deeper the sleep.
Add more plates please, I keep waking up to this place
Unless you're a 2D image, an aluminum plate would be a terrible blanket.
> plate of aluminum would be better since it would have more contact area since it would smoosh you and spread you out over a bigger area. You would be a 2D image.
The heating effect would start lower than that. 96-98F is core body temperature but surface and extremity temp is significantly lower.
If you can sleep in plate armor or under a slab of aluminum, more power to you. I know I wouldn't be able to
Isn't 98°F (had to convert to Celsius, it says 36,6°C) quite exactly our body temperature? The chainmail makes more sense then, because it wouldn't isolate...
That’s…what he’s saying. That air temps above your body temp would have the aluminum transfer the heat into your body
don't know about you guys but I'm not normally snuggled up in a blanket if the air temp is 100F
A lot of people want the weight of a blanket for comfort without the insulation. Even when it's crazy hot.
What about fans having an opposite effect?
That's so clever. I have a lot of this wire, and I'd like to try and make one. There is a heat wave here.
I want to try one before I commit to making one.
Try a weighted blanket first. Although it won’t have the same heating and cooling properties. Ever get x-rays at the dentist and they toss that lead apron on to you before they get the heck out of there? Feels like that.
I imagine it would rip out all your body hair and occasionally pinch you violently
Kinky.
It also sheds aluminum dust as the links rub together, and something the size of a blanket is gonna shed a *lot* of dust.
I'm already interested, you don't have to keep selling it to me
blanket weighted with glass beads are a thing. Few years ago you could only get them from specialty medical equipment stores $$$$. But now you can get them anywhere really. Like IKEA used for adhd or autism i think
They vary significantly in quality. If anyone goes this route, make sure to get one that has small quilted sections. The ones with 4" pockets are nearly useless
What about making it with gold?
This comment is golden
Would be heavy as fuck
I mean that's the point, no?
It should have some heft to it but you shouldn't need a spotter to get out of bed
I would want to at least cover ot in a thin sheet of fabric. I have a 20lb weighted blanket, but I do sometimes wish it breathed better.
As an Epileptic who is active and sweats frequently in my sleep this sounds amazing!😅
If you want the senation of suffocating while u sleep then sure.

I was joust about to say this!
Enough reddit for today, nitey knight
And my axe!
This is why I come here.
Came here to say this
I thought "no puns" was a rule here. Did that rule get removed, so now this sub is just R/puns?
Dunno, a good knight or any knight for that matter wouldn't want to use aluminium for armor
The obvious next step is the chain mail Snuggie.
I think that's just armor now
I’m gonna be rich
Ah yes, the body pillow for medieval nuts. Nothing says "passionate" more than having a part of your subjects of interest being right next to you as you go to sleep.
0 protection against ghost, i would not use this
If it got a trace amount of silver in the metal it will however repel vampires and werewolves, and oddly enough, bacteria and fungi
not rust when I sweat it out
It does make is easier to sleep with it over my head instead of trying to wear my tin foil hat when I sleep.
I mean it works perfectly fine if the ghost only had a knife (the chainmail is light while still slash and a bit stab resistance), but wouldn't recommend it if they bring axe causes it'll be useless.
Worthless against arrows too, in case it's the ghost of an elven warrior
Spead some salt on it and tie garlic on the corners
I've thought of doing this but I would want to use small rings so fingers don't get caught in it, but that would make it take much longer. If this comment gets more than 1k upvotes, I'll do it and document the process
You better do it quickly
Fuck updoots, man. Just do it.
He wont and knows it he just wants upvotes
I gave you your 25th upvote, godspeed on the way to 5k. I want this blanket too but I want someone else to confirm it's worth it first lol
Maybe I will do it
Raw aluminum is a bad idea because it sheds a lot of aluminum dust. A high aluminum steel is better.

What's in the starter packs? Kinda always wanted to try making maille, but never got around to sourcing wire to make rings.

Skip it. Buy premade butcher aprons in bulk from China. Then you can just stitch those together yourself.
How much time does it take to deburr it so it doesn't get caught on your clothes or fleshy bits? I feel like that's a critical requirement for a blanket.
Downvoted because this is pathetic attention seeking
you could also like embed this thing inside a comforter to protect it and yourself
Raw aluminum will turn your clothes, skin, and bedding a dull stone grey. I might recommend a steel with high aluminum content if possible, but that'll be heavier and require more grip strength to construct. Get a test patch before you commit to the full project!
Where can I buy one, I really need a heavier blanket so I don't move during the night
Weighted blankets are very common, you could probably find them at any home furnishing store probably even walmart or target or something
I have two already, and I use both to sleep, but another one would be so nice
Damn just get those leather shackles at that point 😂 that'll keep you from moving
For the amount of work involved, this would cost a couple thousand bucks. Even a machine made one would be over $3000.
Damn, I'm poor qwq
From what I understand making chainmail is basically super tedious knitting. Easier that the metal being used is aluminum instead of iron or steel rings. chainmail likes to pull hair though so if you're a swarthy person this might not be super comfortable

A knight is a person, that’s chainmail. /r/technicallyincorrect
Actually it’s just called Maille. Chainmail is incorrect and is the medieval equivalent of saying PIN number or atm machine

For one-quarter the price of this thing you can buy a weighted cooling blanket that won't oxidize and leave black spots on your skin or clothing. This is the dumbest idea I've seen in a long time.
