FNAF is iconic for it's jumpscares, yes, but the reason for that is the expertly crafted, horrifying anticipation that makes them work. Jumpscares are a release from dread that transitions into momentary terror. Every other mascot horror simply tried to piggyback off of FNAF's success without realizing why it worked.

Honestly, after growing up playing only shooter games, I have to say, I think they're overrated. I cannot play shooter games for the life of me. One of the main reasons for this is because only one skill truly matters in these kinds of games, aiming. If you have someone who's mediocre at aiming, but really good at every other mechanic in the game, they stand no chance against someone who has perfect aim and lacking skill with the other mechanics.
