If you read the trivia section on IMDB it kinda paints the picture of what happened. Season 1 ratings were low so Fox was planning on cancelling it, it was also competing with Friends. Mid-season ratings picked up and Friends was in its final season so they renewed for season 2 in hopes it would pick up steam. When season 2 started so did another show on Fox called Point Pleasant, Fox figured Point Pleasant was a better option to follow The O.C. so Fox reduced Tru Calling from a 13 episode season 2 down to 6. After filming the 6th episode Fox notified the cast the show was cancelled. Two other things of note, Eliza Dushku the star of the show wasn't happy with the show which probably didn't help and Fox around this time was infamously known for making poor decisions on what shows to keep and cancel. Fox got a bad rep around this time and they've been cursed really ever since.

It’s funny because Point Pleasant flopped so hard, and Tru had a sort of cult following for a while.

> Eliza Dushku the star of the show wasn't happy with the show Could you elaborate on that? Can't seem to find anything through google. Not doubting you, just curious.

Found this on its IMDb trivia page. Huge grain of salt since it's not a direct source. >At the The University of Colorado at Boulder's 57th Annual Conference on World Affairs in 2005, star Eliza Dushku's mother Judith Dushku (a Professor of Government at Suffolk University) told a story about her daughter's growing dissatisfaction with the writing and her character as the show went on. According to Mrs. Dushkhu, Eliza had been promised that Tru Calling (2003) would be another "strong girl" show, in the tradition of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997), and that her character would be a role model for young women. However, by about the sixth episode, Eliza was calling her mother to complain about egregiously weak and dumb traits in her character. Examples given by Mrs. Dushku include: an argument that Eliza had with the showrunners because she refused to play a scene in which Tru did not know what a map was (and she had to have a man tell her) and Eliza being told that Tru shouldn't be seen studying for her MCATs (even though she was supposed to be a medical student). Eliza also made a list of all the script instructions written to describe Tru's state of mind, and they always included words like "overwhelmed," "surprised," "shocked," and "bewildered," but never instructions for Tru to be strong, confident, or sure of herself.

Thanks, that’s a shame if it’s true.

feench

Eliza has complained about every tv role I’ve seen her get.

ProtomanBn

I've noticed that too

HeartFullONeutrality

Lol, wonder what her complaints were about Buffy/Angel.

gawdno

I find this so hilarious because young me only had an antenna and I loved all those Fox shows. Tru Calling, Point Pleasant, The OC, North Shore, House etc. But idk how they've all aged

FoundWords

My favorite thing about this show is that its other star, Zach Galifanakis, described it as "the worst television show I've ever seen."

bravesgeek

It was one of the worst rated shows between ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX both years. They just straight up cancelled it and replaced it.

kenm130

It was canceled due to low ratings, sadly. I loved the show and have it on DvDs still.

janemain_dbd

Me too

>Again, in case you weren't aware, it was renewed for a full season 2 from my understanding but about 6 episodes into the filming of the second season, production was shut down and it never returned. This isn't unusual. In the days of 20+ episode seasons, you don't film the whole season ahead like most shows do now, you just bank a few and stay about 5-6 episodes ahead of broadcast. Networks would almost always renew with full season orders, but they can pull the plug at any moment. So tons of low-rated shows were abruptly cancelled midway through a season's production and then have 5 or so episodes that never aired. Tru Calling was one of them.

If you enjoy podcasts, I recommend you listen to Richard Hatem’s Paranormal Bookshelf, in the most recent episode (7), the host talks about being a writer on this show. Very interesting personal look at the world of TV writing.

inkyblinkypinkysue

The cast on IMDb is loaded - holy crap. I watched this show back in the day and completely forgot about it.

KeptinGL6

It was a good show with a unique premise on Fox in the late '90s/early 2000s. We all know what happens to THOSE shows. Firefly, Greg the Bunny, Dark Angel, Andy Richter Controls the Universe...

Sweetheartscanbeeeee

I know nothing about this show, but it confused me into thinking True Blood was “Tru Blood”.

badedum

I really enjoyed this show -- fun concept and the good v evil battle of Tru v Jason Priestly's character was fun to watch.

solidcurrency

It was cancelled due to low ratings and reviews. I watched it; it wasn't very good.

monsieurxander

Forget it, Jake. It's FOX.

thebruns

Fox being Fox.

Was he involved in television? I thought he was mostly a film person.
