Big Bang Theory

CountVertigo

I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone on Reddit positively rating that show.

AgentElman

Because while many have r/television always downvotes them. You are seeing the result of an echo chamber not of actual opinions.

Zarianin

That show was massive before people jumped on the hate train. Not sure when or why public opinion on it changed, but it was not always hated

oomfaloomfa

10 years ago it was all pro musk and tbbt quotes

BarnabeeBoy

I like it

Brother_Farside

bazinga!

LeoMarius

Young Sheldon is terrific. I expected it to be the same silly laugh track generic sitcom, but it's far more insightful. Annie Potts is fantastic in it.

Naugrin27

Annie Potts is fantastic. Always.

HotGirlWave298

Agree. Young Sheldon is 1000x better than TBBT

realitythreek

This is mine too. I think it’s terrible. However, I am a huge nerd and that’s probably why I don’t think it’s funny.

Aulla

First two season is great until to the episode where they introduce the female Sheldon. Its all downhill from there.

IndescribableRuckus

Pandering to nerds is way too effective.

davoloid

But it's not, it's like weird stereotypes.of nerds but no actual humour. For truly effective nerd-based comedy, see The IT Crowd.

zippoiii

Overrated, not overhated

ChainLC

Yellowstone

ZippoInk

The first season had me hooked, then it just turned into absolute dog shit after that.

Da1realBigA

This. That first season was good television. Ppl want to shit on it bc of how far it fell, but it was legit good tv. Solid writing that was further carried by a great world building, strong characters, good acting (minus the kid) and enough intrigue to carry the whole season and the audience. Then S2 got annoying, still watchable despite no solid writing, just ok and everything else that made it worth watching started to decay. Every season it just decayed more and more, it was a result of nothing really happening narrative-wise. There was no progress in any sense. Characters suffered, the story suffered and eventually the audience suffered. You can only do nothing in a show for half a season, maybe 1 whole season if you created a top tier show BB or GoT or Succession. YS has been spinning the same record for 2- 3 seasons.

ludicrous_copulator

Sorry, but that daughter character is straight up mental. She needs to be locked up. Actually, they all do. They kill without a second thought. They're all horrible except for the one son's wife.

Employment-lawyer

Suits

Chang_Daddy2

The Walking Dead. The premise and the first season had promise. After that it declined rapidly. I don’t know how it lasted so long and spawned so many others shows.

Jackbuddy78

It's one of the few shows that peaked with the first episode.

navenager

Legion is like this too, and I loved Legion, but man it's first episode is spectacular.

trumpno6

Nobody says it's great tho.

KittenAdored

How I met your mother

The_Safe_For_Work

That show that people like.

Em4gdn3m

Fuck off. That show is amazing. Especially season 2.

How dare you.

Roook36

The one they're all talking about right now? Yup I agree

Solsolly

The Walking Dead

Friends

Velorium_Camper

Living Single was a way better show than Friends.

raylan_givens6

and "A Different World" was better than both

Milligoon

Yep. Never got it

scott81425

Thank goodness for the laugh track, otherwise I'd have no idea it was supposed to be funny.

kahn_noble

This

Ash_Killem

The Office. Don’t get me wrong worth a watch, at least the earlier seasons, but the charm falls off hard. Some people make it a part of their personality though.

giunta13

When would you say the charm falls off?

MandoDoughMan

IMO the show loses the dry, relatable mockumentary charm in season 5 but remains a pretty solid, if now run-of-the-mill comedy. Season 6 nosedives and the series spirals after that. It did somehow stick the landing with the finale though.

Jackbuddy78

Michael goes from bad boss in the first couple of seasons to someone who should be arrested like every episode. One of the worst cases of flanderizing a character.   When he tried to stick his leg in an MRI machine I knew they fully jumped the shark.

CharlieWormhat

I actually really like The Office. But Carrel’s last few seasons Michael is a different character every episode depending on who wrote it.

solidgoldrocketpants

Too many Michael gags were clearly a writer saying “I came up with this wacky situation. Who should it be? I guess Michael?” Like having a George Foreman Grill next to his bed and stepping on it, or following GPS directions into a lake. It’s such lazy bullshit.

knightsunbro

Girls

PetyrDayne

If you're moving to New York watch Girls and do the opposite.

AegonTheAuntFucker

Mandalorian. It's mostly just filler and fan service.

RoyBatty1984

Bob Hearts Abishola

djkhan23

The Expanse Tried watching S1 twice. Powered through it and at some point during s2e1 I was thought to myself "I have no further interest in this show". I know reddit thinks it's sci fi genius but that's probably due to the lack of high quality sci fi shows. Firefly and BSG are definitely better shows overall. Oh and The Boys. Watchmen are Peacemaker are both undeniably better.

ArmchairJedi

The acting in that show, with a few exceptions, is so bad. The guy playing Holden... how the hell did he ever get a job? He's so bad it hurts to watch. The world building is interesting, but the characters are pretty cliche. I gave up after S1 as well.

Tasty_Cycle_9567

Mr Robot

WilliamBruceBailey

Hot take: The Sopranos. Just drags on

stroopwafelling

I feel like I checked out a different version of Dark than the rest of the internet saw.

Weaver4prez

Thank fuck someone said it. I thought the first 2 seasons were pretty sick but the 3rd was so far up its own ass

stroopwafelling

We didn't make it nearly that far. Two episodes in we got tired of sad German people dealing with aughties-style mystery-box storytelling and checked out.

navenager

Yea, unfortunately, the first 2 episodes are melodramatic German Stranger Things, but from episode 3 on, it not only explains everything but flexes some of the most competent time-travel writing ever created. I understand it's not for everyone, but my god is it spectacular for those who are into it.

TheGlave

All of it got explained. Nothing mystery box about it.

AegonTheAuntFucker

Season 3 was basically repeating the same lines about the circle. It added barely anything to the otherwise fantastic first 2 seasons.

Hermiona1

I watched one season and thought it was terribly boring.

MikeOfAllPeople

I felt 1899 was pretty stupid, so that made me decide not to bother with Dark.

TheGlave

I loved Dark and didnt even complete 1899

deusasclepian

Dark is much better than 1899, as someone who watched both

navenager

You watched em in the wrong order. Dark is the show those creators nailed, 1899 was them trying to recapture lightning in a bottle.

stroopwafelling

A wise instinct. I thought 1899 was a tremendous waste of time.

thethriftstorian

Gilmore Girls. Why is it such a huge part of so many millennial identities? What am I not seeing?!

raylan_givens6

my guess, its wish fulfillment for women get to be the pretty "nerdy" smart girl , all the hot guys flock to her , despite her being a "nerd" she is supposed to be "poor" but in reality they live an upper class life , so basically a great lifestyle without the stigma of being snobs/upper class have access to wealthy people while being "down to earth" a teen pregnancy situation where everything turned out magically great, in fact, they're like best friends not mother-daughter all while living in a "quirky" town where they are the stars of their little world

HotGirlWave298

Yup!! This is up there w the office in my book. Have tried to watch it annually for the past 10 or so years and I just don’t get it. And I’m someone who usually looovees CW teen soap opera type of fare. I just never got it 🤷🏻‍♀️

super_lamp56

Scrubs. Everyone acts like JD and Turk are the funniest people alive and I just don't see it

raylan_givens6

that act got old fast if you've seen 5 episodes, you've basically watched the whole series it just repeats itself

acquiescentLabrador

Not to mention that a lot of the humour hasn’t aged brilliantly

___potato___

lol at everyone getting downvoted for answering the question

loritree

And why in the hell is the question getting downvoted?

Mugen8YT

I imagine people are either doing it because they like The Office that much, or they feel like it's a low effort question? Definitely doesn't seem downvote worthy either way.

keving87

you have to love the right thing and hate the right thing at the right time for Reddit to upvote you, everything else is downvoted. even facts get downvoted lol

blackest-rainberry

Because redditors don’t like negativity, if you don’t find positive about something, you are edgelord, narc, …etc.

Apg3410

Friends

grinr

The leftovers. I get that it resonated strongly with its fans and I'm glad they enjoyed it, but it took way way way too long to get to nowhere.

mchch8989

I just watched this all for the first time recently, and it certainly didn’t go where I thought it would. By the end of season 3 I was so enthralled and invested that it didn’t matter where it went for me.

grinr

This is pretty much what I've seen from everyone who loves the show. It's a journey thing i guess.

The_Maedre

>but it took way way way too long to get to nowhere. This I still don't understand the plot about kevin being Jesus or something.

Sneakers-N-Code

I’m curious. Did you watch it when it aired, or did you try watching it years later?

xKronkx

2004ish. I saw the smoke monster thing and just noped out

hey_now24

Dark. Reddit loves to bring it up as the best tv of all time. It’s good for two seasons and then meh.

Milligoon

Honestly Dark is better if you have an understanding of german and germany

rtxj89

Why

richardblack3

I LOVED Dark, and I know a lil German. But I'd like the answer to this as well. Cheers

DieAxtImH4us

It is not. I’m German and live in Germany. Dark is just pretentious and pseudo-deep. The acting is terrible too. Feels more like they cast amateur theater actors from your local Bauerntheater and they are trying so hard to overemphasis and exaggerate every word and dialogue.

hart37

Friends. Despite it not being funny 99% of the time there are some really toxic relationships on that show that it's fans just seem to ignore. If you have a boyfriend like Ross piss him off, he's not cute and the way he treats not just Rachel but his other love interests in that show is beyond screwed.

raylan_givens6

it never made sense NYC is full of guys, and Ross was the best Rachel could do? really?

No-Clue-9155

Sitcoms always have annoying / toxic people. As for whether it’s funny or not is just a matter of taste and opinion

readwrite_blue

Succession. Lots of polish, but it's just the cruel squabbling of pathetic people and the points it makes aren't surprising new or particularly compelling. It's Arrested Development without the laughs or Mad Men without the investigation into humanity.

thegooniegodard

The Bear

non-squitr

I really liked the first 2 seasons, but the 3rd is just a self indulgent mess banging it's head against the wall. They are just repeating the same theme over and over without really progressing anything

Shaggy__94

Succession

richardblack3

I tried hard on this one. I quit mid first season. The choice to have the camera zoom in and out at least once a scene pestered me prob too much. ... But Could someone explain why it's good?

KeyBreak6698

I’ll never understand it

baconcheeseburgarian

Game of Thrones

This is the answer.

Hmm. What about it didn't ya like?

down42roads

Breaking Bad

dxDTF

Succession

BikiniBeautyQueen

For me, it's *Friends*. It's entertaining, but I don't see why it's considered one of the greatest shows ever. The humor feels dated now, and some storylines repeat. What do you think makes a show truly deserving of hype?

Aeolus_14_Umbra

Seinfeld. WOT.

donnaundblitzen

Lost..I tried watching it recently and could not get past season 4. It gets bonkers and just boring. Groundbreaking at the time, but kind of painful to watch now

istinkalot

Breaking Bad

daddychainmail

The Office. 100% with you. I never laugh.

street-trash

Breaking bad hands down.

Hypernatremia

Andor

raylan_givens6

lol, you're getting downvoted (despite answering the question) , classic reddit i too don't understand the love Andor gets the first episode is really sloppy , the side characters/stories are uninteresting the only really good part was the andy serkis prison episodes and skarsgard as the spy boss the rest was garbage - i didn't care about the evil empire woman or the weirdo who was stalking her, i didn't care about Andor's village or any of the 'quirky' inhabitants. i didn't care about Mon Mothma's failing marriage

Edm_vanhalen1981

Modern Family

Jackbuddy78

Fleabag, the main character is horrible. The acting is fine but I don't give a fuck about her.    The constant 4th wall breaks with her just being disdainful and spiteful towards everyone is the worst way to endear an audience with a character I have ever seen. I don't think I have ever disliked someone so much 5 minutes into a show.

The_Maedre

>the main character is horrible That's kinda the point? She's a horrible person and slowly Begins to do better. We don't have to always like main characters.

Slomo_Baggins

Has to be my least favorite reason for someone disliking something, when “the main characters are horrible people.” That’s almost always the point!! And the best shows, like Fleabag or Succession or Mad Men etc., the writers are so talented that you sympathize with the terrible people despite their disdainful personalities. Best example is the sopranos

loritree

I’m sorry you’re getting downvoted. I couldn’t finish the first episode I hated it so much. She’s literally getting S.A.’d in the first scene, how is that at all funny?

Krunklock

I don't think the SA was meant to be funny...but humor is a coping mechanism of trauma sometimes.

kcrh36

I loved Fleabag. That being said, I don't understand why you're being down voted because you answered the question exactly as it was asked. You gave your reasons, they are valid. The reasons you list are a lot of the ones that make me like the show, but your opinion is totally fine.

buzzspinner

Mad Men

EchoesofIllyria

Arrested Development. I could say something easy to garner upvotes, but I just don’t get this show. It’s *fine*. It’s also a half dozen terrible people being terrible to each other in ways I don’t find funny. And no, I’m not impressed by blue stains on the walls as a running gag. I realise it’s a beloved show, and I know that love is valid. But it’s just so not for me. ETA: of course the top few replies are Big Bang Theory and Friends. They’re so overrated, they never catch shit on Reddit.

Tobar_the_Gypsy

If that’s a veiled criticism about me I won’t hear it and I won’t respond to it

NoMathematician9706

Arrested development is surrealist comedy. I understand that everyone might not find it funny or relatable and that’s okay. But many many gags on the show could be seen translating from reel to real. Michael for eg is the good guy for the fists two seasons and suffers for it. I found that character to be really relatable because I have seen many examples of such adults who want to win their parents approval at great personal cost and yet it never comes. Other than that the script is so so tight that you have a storm of jokes coming in every 10 seconds and might miss them if you aren’t paying attention. Which is not for every viewer as most of them might just want to watch relaxing TV. So I get that you personally might not like the show but it has its appeal due to all those and many more reasons. I am personally a fan. Though I agree that the last season probably shouldn’t have happened.

VlatnGlesn

I'm sorry your family hurt you this badly.

EchoesofIllyria

Yes, I don’t like a TV show you like therefore I was abused lol

Bowgal

Sopranos, Friends, Game of Thrones

FeatherShard

Lost.

PMzyox

Probably the Sopranos. Bring on the downvotes

Believable_Bullshit

You clearly never had the makings of a varsity athlete

richardblack3

You past the first few episodes? I gave up on it after the pilot, but after GF convinced me, I gave it another go, and ended up loving it.

PMzyox

I didn’t watch it live and it does not hold up well unfortunately. I’ve tried watching it several times since but it’s excruciatingly boring. I cannot force myself to pay attention or care at all about the story or characters. Romanticized gangster lifestyle isn’t cool or fun, despite what Hollywood wants to tell (sell?) us. Well to each their own, but the show seems like the OG inspiration for things like Entourage, which is equally unwatchable to me. Marky mark can go to hell along with the cast of that dumpster fire.

raylan_givens6

people miss the point of these mob movies/shows too many people walk away thinking how cool these people are but the point is these guys are all massive losers

Level-Studio7843

I wonder why people think the middle aged bald guy who is extremely rich, respected/feared by everyone, and who, despite looking like a sack of potatoes, can bag any woman he wants , is cool. I just can't figure it out.

The_Maedre

>Bring on the downvotes They clearly listened

whingingcackle

You’re gonna be a fuckin’ funny boy too now?

TwoFartTooFurious

I'm gonna say it. Breaking Bad. Yes, great character work and storylines reaching a crescendo towards the end, but I feel most of the acclaim is inspired by the unlikely tale of a chemistry teacher suffering from cancer turning into a kingpin in the crime world himself. It's the novelty of the idea. And while the writing dissects the psychology of a criminal mind really well, we all seem to forget that at the end of the day it's still just a crime show and has not much else to go with it. And that "Say my name" thing is lame as fuck.

cardinalkgb

AllHallNah

Breaking Bad. If people are fine overlooking all the annoying characters, i guess you could call it great.

Soulaxer

Opinion rejected 🚫

Max_DeIius

No even then it’s shit dude, the whole plot is a complete disaster as well

Krunklock

I agree the show has many shitty and annoying characters...I don't think it's enough to consider it overrated. I guess it is considered one of the greatest series of all time, so it's an easy candidate for this topic.

zoro_juro13

Attack on titan

Funmachine

The Shield. I'm not saying it's bad, but it is overrated. The majority of the show is meandering, rushed, badly written, badly acted, full of underdeveloped characters and dropped plot lines. It has some absolutely amazing, top tier moments throughout the show, but most of the show is a slog.

Old_Duty8206

Combination of the marketing before the first episode as you're never going to believe how the first episode ends then seeing that ending sucked people in  The show after that was always would he get away with it which he kind of did Overall it's not a great show but it was entertaining

Arcadia48

I respectfully disagree, Funmachine 😂

spectacleskeptic

Thank. You.

Everest_95

Breaking Bad Hannibal

Max_DeIius

Breaking Bad by a huge distance

The bear, succession

ejp1082

MASH Even accounting for its era, it's just kind of... okayish. I don't think it'd be notable at all if it had aired in a world with more than three networks.

Jackbuddy78

The problem with MASH is that it's not really dramatic or funny enough to be taken either way.    It has good moments of comedy and drama but never manages to find the right balance episode to episode. Futurama parodied it where it's just a robot randomly flipping between funny and sad modes constantly, that's what it feels like.

Buttersaucewac

The laugh track added to the US broadcast version (which can be disabled on DVDs and was missing from most international airings) totally changes the tone of the show and fires on a lot of things that weren’t intended as big jokes. Much of the banter between characters and especially Hawkeye quipping was only intended to be amusing, not big sitcom punchline jokes, but the network still added huge long laughs from the imaginary audience. The producers hated it so much they negotiated a deal that there would never be a laugh track during operating room scenes, then wrote entire episodes that never left the OR just to escape the laughter.

codece

It also has one of the most annoying laugh tracks of any show. Even back when it was originally aired I found it really phony and out of place.

mister-ferguson

The Flintstones has a pretty annoying laugh track too. When is the audience watching‽ It made no sense...

Buttersaucewac

They didn’t want the laugh track. The DVDs have a button to disable it and in most countries outside the US it didn’t use the laugh track because the producers had some sway over selling it. It works a lot better as a dark comedy without it and there are a lot of lines only audible with the track removed, because it was overlaid over the top of dialogue.

SpannerFrew

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia EDIT: Downvoted of course haha never change you milk drinking fucksmears :D

Game of Thrones

calguy1955

richardblack3

Took me a few tries to get past the pilot. ... Love it after season 2 onward.

TreeRol

I'm going through it for the first time, and I'm with you. It's like Sunny in that every single character is an unredeemable piece of garbage, except they all succeed! And more importantly, it's just not very funny.

gjenkins01

Lost

LiftingCode

The OA. Show sucked ass. The end of season 2 is one of the dumbest things that has ever aired on TV.

sad_plant_boy

Sopranos.

poopfl1nger

Probably seinfeld

plainnoob

The Leftovers and it's not close.

AutographedSnorkel

"Overrated" is just an internet buzzword that doesn't mean anything

HotGirlWave298

Literally just asking for personal opinions out of curiosity, it’s not that deep.

AwfulUsername123

It means exactly what the constituent parts of the word suggest it means.

whoevencaresatall_

The Leftovers Hannibal Dark Go ahead and downvote me

richardblack3

Hmm. Dark and Leftovers are difficult for diff reasons. ... If you didn't like Dark at the onset, it's not your cup of tea, but how far did you get into Leftovers? Hannibal isn't that great IMO as well

yourelosingme

The Wire

richardblack3

Come on. What didn't you like about the wire, and how far did you get into it?

yourelosingme

I watched the whole thing and can comfortably say it was not that good. Kinda boring. I had to force myself through it. The S5 serial killer plot was just plain ridiculous, and in S4, in the middle of a show about crime and narcotics, we spend the whole season hanging out in a junior high school with junior high school age kids? No fucking thank you. It wasn't total trash. They gave us some really interesting characters, but it's certainly not a 10/10 show, and from my comment's negative score I can tell I ruffled some feathers. Some people just can't handle the truth. 🤷‍♂️ Oh, and the opening theme is mid. Yes, all 5 versions of it. Edit: I went too hard. Look, I gave it 8/10 on imdb, but it's not getting any more than that from me.

kahn_noble

Friends. No minorities basically - ever. Perhaps one or two a season, and I’m talking even just background characters. It’s in fucking NYC….

Jackbuddy78

Unfortunately not unusual for the 1990s, I remember Garret Wang saying that he was the only Asian with a leading role on TV during the run of Star Trek Voyager.

NoShowbizMike

Ming Na Wen was in The Single Guy and E.R. during Voyager's run and in nearly as many episodes. Also Sammo Hung had his own show. BD Wong was a lead in Oz.

Jackbuddy78

Wasn't BD Wong a supporting character on Oz?

Krunklock

Not Asian, but I can only really think of Martin being a popular show with a POC lead that was running at the same time as Friends.

jscece

Seinfeld.

LadyStardust72

Curb. Early seasons were funny, but still so transparently formulaic. It's never outright bad, but it is so overly worshipped to this day. I never hear it being criticized.

I_Set_3_Alarms

The Office is life changing because it’s funny and relatable to A LOT of people. Even someone like you who thinks it’s overrated. The mass appeal makes it special
