Heavily downvoted but I still stand by idea that cumulative quality (made up metric) of men's tennis is low currently.
Many top players were arguably better a few years ago.
Just seen the highlights of the sonego-alcaraz match wow absolute bangers every point they are crazy. So many lower ranked people were playing full force today.
r/tennis when Wimbledon “the curfew is so annoying they need to get rid of it”
r/tennis when Australian Open “why are they allowed to play so late? This needs to change”
the problem isn't the matches being allowed to play late, it's matches starting late. the organisers should by this point have buffers to move matches around to the next day because a men's bo5 that begins past 11pm is obviously going to go on until the morning
r/tennis when bo5 “this is why tennis is the pinnacle of sport”
r/tennis when 3 am “this is deplorable. No other sport makes its players play this late”
Pretty competitive first two rounds of Australian Open men's singles this year. 67% of first round matches and 72% of the second round matches went beyond 3 sets. Most of them including seeded players.
Emil though is like the most blank page person on the ATP like there’s just nothing to be said about this man sorry like “yeah you tried” “better luck next time maybe you’ll reach R3”
Meddy match just finish? It’s almost noon on the east coast lmao. Happy for meddy. Going down 2-0 to ruusuvori isn’t ideal but at least he wasn’t chokedev.
Ya know I have 0 concern about the late finish or the length of the match. He played no warmup so any time on court is good and I think that against Felix it is so key to remain composed and consistent and taking away time to overthink that match can help. He will sleep now, get a small training in tomorrow, get scheduled again for late match next round, which will presumably be on Rod Laver which will be a positive later in the tournament.
I think it is a bit less reliable to say "if xx plays like the way he/she is in this match he/she will get destroyed by this other xx player", as top players are good at adjusting to their opponents and dig themselves out of difficult situations as seen in this last day's crazy matches.
Yeah usually non-professionals just see a physio when something hurts real bad otherwise there’s no real need if you’re doing proper warm up and cool down
Haha. I think everyone knows the racquet tension or cleat choice in football or stick choice in hockey at high levels actually means nothing and that it is all mentally saying “oh ya I like this”, but no one says it. Except Daniil of course
Mannarino single handedly disproves this theory. Watch him play Rublev and you can't doubt the impact of string tension on technique / shot output. Make those two play with each others racquets and they both lose 1R
What I am talking about is Medvedev or Nadal or Djokovic changing a tiny bit outside the normal has no affect.
If you give a technifibre player a Wilson racket on the day of the match they will struggle because of unfamiliarity.
But moving the tension up or down a touch will not have an impact
In the most basic sense, the physiotherapist helps him recover through certain "cooldown" exercises so that his muscles aren't as fatigued as they would be if he went to sleep right away
You know when you do a workout, and you're meant to do like a 'cool down' where you'll just jog for like 5-10 minutes
Basically that x100, they'll be massaging muscles, working through stretches, doing some treatment on rashes etc
Idk what it is but it feels like the top seeds on the ATP side just have a psychological hold on the lower ranked players to an extent that doesn't exist in the WTA outside of the VERY top 1-2
Both of them have been in big trouble a ton so far this tournament yet somehow the favorites always find a way to pull out the close ATP matches
Rublev, Ruud, and Zverev all survived 5th set supertiebreaks, Med came back from two sets down, and even Novak had 4-5 0-40 against Popyrin last round to go down 2-1
In both cases there was one player who just got outplayed(Rune and Pegula) but the way the closer matches went are complete opposites
If anything their experience and stamina comes through.
The Daniil in the first set and the man who bagelled Ruusuvori in the last are the same player somehow.
As long as women don't play BO5, these upsets are going to happen.
"*What is it, like 3:40 in the morning?*" - Medvedev
"*It's late.*"
"*I honestly guys, I would not be here. Thanks for staying. If I would be a tennis fan and I would come, I would be at 1, I would be like okay, let's go home, we gonna catch the end of the match on the TV, watch 30 minutes and then go to bed.*" - Medvedev
I'm not going to rewatch this mess, but I think dropshot efficiency was like 10% at best.
Serve was very bad until set 3, as well (1st% in set 2 was below 50).
5 set was great, yeah (Ruus collapsed after 0-3, but Med was legit good).
I turned off the match at 2-0 down not bc I thought he would lose but bc I knew he would come back and was going to be frustrated that he took away 2 hours of me being able to
Play Persona 4
I'm not a hater or a fan of Meddy, I enjoy good tennis overall, but I understand why some people have a problem with him. Guy truly hates to lose, of course this is normal for any competitive player but this mfker really HATES to lose and when it seems that things aren't going his way he starts those weird antics.
Watching the end of this 5th set I feel mixed emotions. Sucks to see Emil losing because I think he did enough to win, but how many players would give up after losing first 2 sets going late in the night? Even if it feels like a sloppy win, it's a win and Meddy still deserves it for enduring it.
May both players have good rest and thank you for this game, it made my day better.
Sometimes I think about how 4 hours of Gone with the Wind or Lawrence of Arabia feels so long yet I would willingly sit down and watch 4 and a half hours of people lobbing balls at each other back and forth over a net
Tbf I tend to have tennis on "in the background" - like I can get up, go do a few chores and come back to it
Whereas if you do that in one of those epic films, you'll be like "wait when the fuck did it become world war 2?"
This is insane. Medvedev just wanted more practice I guess… But why would he mess up his sleep schedule playing till 4 am for it? Bro has to be trolling
He himself is struggling with his level and Jannik is a bulldozer right now. If anything it’s Sinner who’s looking best right now but Novak obviously is Novak.
I think people are over-hyping Sinner tbh. Novak is the overwhelming favourite regardless of the others, even if he's looks like he's struggled so far and might be unwell.
What channel is tsitsipas playing on?
Thoughts on Rublev - Korda and Manarino - Shelton?
Hopefully no rain in the forecast for Day 6. Frtiz v. Marozsan is definitely a MUST SEE Mannarino v. Shelton might be spicy because French crowd
Women's draw decimated wow
Heavily downvoted but I still stand by idea that cumulative quality (made up metric) of men's tennis is low currently. Many top players were arguably better a few years ago.
Its better than the years after covid tbh
Is it?
Just seen the highlights of the sonego-alcaraz match wow absolute bangers every point they are crazy. So many lower ranked people were playing full force today.

I’d like to think it’s different people haha
it's hilarious how after Iga's match we called it the match of the year.... ....and then this entire day happened.
how are pros still taking becker on as a coach, i dont get it

I was praying this wouldn’t be another Thiago match
MY BOY MY SWEET SUMMER CHILD OH MY GLORIOUS KING MEDDY (I just came back from running 15k)
Why is Medvedev taking 2.5 hours to go to bed? Media and physio should take like 1.5 hour max, right? Sorry if I sound like a noob.
Gotta cool-down, shower, eat something & travel back to the hotel (plus maybe need time for the adrenaline to die down to properly sleep)
They have some routine after every match to keep the body fit and fresh after all the tiredness muscles gets after the match.
That place cleared out super fast. On court interview done, and then it's almost empty. Sleep well, Aussies! Get home safe.
Also think of the physio who is also having to work at this hour, but isn't getting paid a fraction of what Meddy is.
I am pretty sure physio getting well enough to do his job happily even its fraction what meddy earns
Ya know I have 0 concern about the late finish or the length of the match. I love Danil. Felt like he recognised that, yes, going to bed at 6.30am is shit but also that he's in a very privileged position.
that was an amazing day of tennis! see y’all well, *checks time*, in a few hours folks again!
Every single person getting that signed ball from Meddy, deserves it so much. Staying back so late.
Oh for sure. He’s a great guy for signing too considering the late hour
" late :') "
bunch of troopers, i just wish a great rest to everyone who stayed out there. late :)
why they see the physio? Stretching?
Recovery. In order to be ready and play in probably 30 hours or so, you will need a deep tissue massage and stretching.
Can I hire a physio as tennis amateur ? I need preparation for my next match lol
Of course. Usually can find a physio at a medical clinic or gym, depending on where you live. Edit to add: try googling physiotherapist in your area
I stretch every morning in pool between laps. Best workout ever

Tennis players have the sleep schedules of DJs. My guy is going to bed at 6am after a match that ends at 3.45 am because he has to do recovery
Well, he may end up having to wake up at 7am a few days later for a 12pm start
hopefully the schedulers take this into account… he’s a big name so could be in a night session
"Late" lol
What a shame it had to end that way
6:30 bedtime
is this daniil? being very positive?
7 hours of sleep, and folks can pick up the Sinner Baez R3 :)
Newb question what is the physio? Med referring to it in his interview
In the most basic sense, the physiotherapist helps him recover through certain "cooldown" exercises so that his muscles aren't as fatigued as they would be if he went to sleep right away
You know when you do a workout, and you're meant to do like a 'cool down' where you'll just jog for like 5-10 minutes Basically that x100, they'll be massaging muscles, working through stretches, doing some treatment on rashes etc
Daniil Medvedev, you bullshit Russian, I *love* you.
Meddy's red nose is so cute
He looks like a baby 🥹
Medvedev was Russian to get to the Finnish of this one.
Horrendous pun. Have an upvote.
Idk what it is but it feels like the top seeds on the ATP side just have a psychological hold on the lower ranked players to an extent that doesn't exist in the WTA outside of the VERY top 1-2 Both of them have been in big trouble a ton so far this tournament yet somehow the favorites always find a way to pull out the close ATP matches Rublev, Ruud, and Zverev all survived 5th set supertiebreaks, Med came back from two sets down, and even Novak had 4-5 0-40 against Popyrin last round to go down 2-1 In both cases there was one player who just got outplayed(Rune and Pegula) but the way the closer matches went are complete opposites
BO5 is also more forgiving for drops in mentality. If this was BO3 then we know who would’ve won.
BO3 and BO5 difference. Medvedev would have lost this match like Elena did if he was only stuck to three sets.
Yup, BO5 lets the best players play their way into form.
If anything their experience and stamina comes through. The Daniil in the first set and the man who bagelled Ruusuvori in the last are the same player somehow. As long as women don't play BO5, these upsets are going to happen.
Nose epidermis hanging on for dear life
WTF, 4:30 AM? these organizers are fukked up
hahha ok so it was Elena's fault
"*What is it, like 3:40 in the morning?*" - Medvedev "*It's late.*" "*I honestly guys, I would not be here. Thanks for staying. If I would be a tennis fan and I would come, I would be at 1, I would be like okay, let's go home, we gonna catch the end of the match on the TV, watch 30 minutes and then go to bed.*" - Medvedev
give Gilles the coach of the year award, I don't care about anything else that happens for the rest of the year
Hahah med saying if he was a tennis fan he would of just gone home at 1am and maybe catch the rest on TV
Man of the people, he is.
Danili serving bagels 🥯 for breakfast
Daniil like "yeah I would've left too" HUGE kudos to the fans! <3
“honestly guys i would not be here” 😭😭
Meddy somehow praising his fans but also insulting them at the same time lmao
It’s a complisault!
And you know for sure that he really wouldn't have.
A bagel at the end of a five-setter at 3:40 a.m. is an appropriate way to wrap up this chaotic day. And night.
Ruusuvuori just wanted to go to bed.
No he came back from 2-0 down vs Cilic as well.
Medvedev's face is really peeling.
what were those hand signs Med’s coach was doing lol?
I thought it was a "Look at my fingernails" thing
yea kinda reminded me of what Med did at Paris Masters
he was imitating the weird gestures medvedev was doing to him every time he lost a point i guess?
yea could be, also reminded me of Medvedev “checking his nails” at Paris Masters haha. Funny as fuck regardless
Yeah probably
he was doing octopus gang sings, only Med understands them
https://i.gifer.com/7dQ3.gif
What is it past Jim Courier's bed time?
Just remember this was so late because of the record breaking tiebreaker before this
What a comeback! That was insane!
I fucking love Daniil Medvedev Gilles love you too
Looks like Emil forgot that in Majors they play 5 sets.
daniil whew
16 hours of tennis, are you not entertained? Lmao, good night guys. See you guys in 7 hours.
Medvedev clearly just wanted more match time after not playing any warmup tournaments 😎
Rublev 0/9 in slam QFs, Ruusuvuori 0/8 in slam 2Rs
Somehow Med played better at the ass crack of dawn than at midnight
What's the bet that Meds gonna serve some memeable content in the interview
His coach was signaling that he has no fingernails left after the match probably
Oh man thank you Med for winning, staying up to nearly 4am has been worth it

Forgive me its 4am here I meant Friday morning lol ur right
or Friday morning or whatever here in Melbourne. Nearly 4am here 😴
Thank God for Uni holidays.
I like a Bagel in the morning, but *this* is *ridiculous*
I’m grabbing my popcorn for the coming (very rightful) press conference rant about the shit scheduling
So ends one of the best days of tennis I've ever seen. Yes the schedule could've been better but that reeeaaally shouldn't be the main story.
Waiting for the on-court interview like 👀
meddyclass
Felix you're next bud and then Grigor will hand his ass back to him. Let's gooooo medfam
Bakeries open around 4am ig
They're just starting today's shift early atp
WE SURVIVED
Yep, a bagel. Med is incredible at winning ugly. But overall still a very bad match, gotta rest and play better.
I’m glad someone else thought it was bad. One of his worst in a long time - until the 5th set.
I'm not going to rewatch this mess, but I think dropshot efficiency was like 10% at best. Serve was very bad until set 3, as well (1st% in set 2 was below 50). 5 set was great, yeah (Ruus collapsed after 0-3, but Med was legit good).
That was a BATTLE physically and emotionally
Sadly, if it is another pusher like Dverev, Emil will have chance to win 3sets
I turned off the match at 2-0 down not bc I thought he would lose but bc I knew he would come back and was going to be frustrated that he took away 2 hours of me being able to Play Persona 4
bro bageling at 3.30am
GOATVEDEV
OMG that Giles' celebration!!
THANK FUCKING GOD
We all need a coach like Gilles. That guy is ride or die.
Ggs
Lol. Bageled him.
Oh the trainer looks relieved :-D
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Bro was Gilles ready to show a middle finger or smth 🤣🤣🤣
Kudos to Ruusivuori for putting up a fight
I'm not a hater or a fan of Meddy, I enjoy good tennis overall, but I understand why some people have a problem with him. Guy truly hates to lose, of course this is normal for any competitive player but this mfker really HATES to lose and when it seems that things aren't going his way he starts those weird antics. Medvedev was in that Murray 2023 AO late night mindset.
"*I should've won in 4.*" - Ruusuvuori "*Yeah, but you didn't.*" - Medvedev
Actually it was Medvedev that should have won in 4 if he hold onto just one of his breaks
Medvedev winning fast so we can all go to bedvedev.
HYPE GILLES
I’m convinced Meddy is winning this because he’s used to playing ranked R6S till 4 am
Medvedev escapes.
Medvedev was hungry so he served up a bagel
Lol what do those hand gestures mean
Gilles 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s done
Damn. Ruusuvuori turning up in this game.
Meddy wants to go to bed.
Emil was 2 points away in the 4th set
What 2 matches back to back.
Damnnnn Daniil
Emil 😔
Damn! Medvedev becoming Djokovic junior by taking Ruusuvuori's legs and soul.
Tuck him in
Meddy channeling his inner Dunkin. Time to make the doughnuts.
Go on Emil get 1 game on the board at least.
Ruusuvori is clearly gassed.
Meddy switched gears
For us Europeans, that's great. I have never before watched an AO match at 6.30 pm after work. For the players, not so great probably...
Can't Ruus hold on til 4:34am?
Simply incredible from Meddy
Ruusuvuori seeming pretty done with life
Ruusuvuori is 'Finnish'-ed 😔
medvedev was russian to finnish the last set
I was gonna make this joke haha
Beat you to it 😂😂
my heart is really broken right now.
Daniel really said “I didn’t do any pre AO warmup so I will do my warmup at AO”
Sometimes I think about how 4 hours of Gone with the Wind or Lawrence of Arabia feels so long yet I would willingly sit down and watch 4 and a half hours of people lobbing balls at each other back and forth over a net
There is more of the kind of surprise that I want, in a tennis match, than in an amazing long movie.
Tbf I tend to have tennis on "in the background" - like I can get up, go do a few chores and come back to it Whereas if you do that in one of those epic films, you'll be like "wait when the fuck did it become world war 2?"
Now watch Aus Open trolling Meddy by putting him early in day session next.
Might actually do him a favor by helping reset his body clock, and against FAA who’s also another certified choker
Crisis averted
This is insane. Medvedev just wanted more practice I guess… But why would he mess up his sleep schedule playing till 4 am for it? Bro has to be trolling
Bro found his best tennis at 3:37am
can’t wait for the unfiltered post match interview
Meddy just running away with this
Just another day at the office for meddy.
Don't fret Ruousuouvuouri you have a windy -16 C Helsinki to look forward to
He looks gassed.
Feels like this match has helped him get back into previous year form. He is looking completely different player now
Novak has to be licking his lips with everyone else having played 5 setters so early in the tournament.
Novak probably only cares about getting over his sickness
But he is himself not 26 anymore and has played two long matches
Sport can be cruel
I feel it was cruel too many times today. I think Rune was the only one where the lower ranked player actually won
Only one on the men's side despite a load of 5 setters. There are also Blinkova and Burel on the women's side most notably.
