If I understand correctly, the tax is paid in the country where the tournament takes place. It is settled according to the rules applicable in this country. The country of residence matters for other earnings, including: those from sponsors
Stuttgart kinda screws with this portion of the women's calendar because it's a 500 in name only.
The draw is always *loaded*
The appearance fees are allegedly absurd (impossible to say for sure, but the player vote and the entry lists effectively confirm it)
And the winner gets a Porsche.
The players vote on their favorite tournament in each classification every year, and Stuttgart almost always wins (10 times since 2007).
However, since it is still only a 500, it has a tiny draw and effectively blocks other tournaments from playing at the same time because it would be extraordinarily difficult for them to attract top players.
Stuttgart is absolutely a pain in the schedule. TBH the whole WTA clay lead up to RG is a bit substandard- Charleston grey clay, indoor ‘dusty hard court’ Stuttgart, Madrid at altitude, where they are regularly treated as second-class, then at last Rome is solid prep.
Yeah, it's a great tournament as an entertainment product in isolation, but it makes the tour worse IMO.
The tournament gets to have its cake and eat it too.
And agreed more generally on the issues with the WTA clay swing. The lack of a third clay 1000 opens up a weird stretch in the schedule where Stuttgart and to a lesser extent (though they're trying to close the gap) Charleston are wildly over influential on the rest of the calendar for 500s.
Not really.
Dubai and Beijing *definitely* pay insane appearance fees 500 standards, but they have WTA analogs and fall during weird parts of the calendar.
Stuttgart is kind of in a league of its own because of where it is and the lack of a third 1000 on clay in the WTA.
Charleston is trying to get on their level.
is charleston still sponsored by volvo? need to get a better car sponsor lol
sloane did a much better job hamming it up for the cameras than most could

They were until very recently, but now it's owned by Emma Navvaro's father who is the Founder/CEO of Sherman Financial (Credit One)
He also bought the Cincinnati Open.
I saw her at IW when she lost to Yuan. It was a bit odd since it was an evening match in Stadium 2, yet very few people were watching. It seemed to be mostly Chinese people in the stands, and during one changeover, they even played Chinese music. They even let those with a grounds pass all the way down to the first section.
Damn, all the QF/SF/F tickets are sold out. Only round of 16 left. Does anyone know if there are ever walk-up/last minute returns that you can buy for this tournament?
You might want to look at ticket resale websites. The prices are usually expensive but you can get lucky. I found a pair of tickets for the Montreal tournament below face value 2 years ago.
For those interested, I wrote a short article on the subject. There’s not much new information, but the support is always appreciated :)

if there is a clay tournament that others may have a chance against Iga, it would be stuttgart or madrid but then again, iga is way better player now than last year (esp after all those tough matches this start of the season, she sure is well-trained coming into clay).
It's always been popular due to the prize money and the way the players are treated. e.g. free gifts every night, decent hotel, massive discounts on other products etc..
It was featured in a documentary way back when Hingis was playing. IIRC she's won it 4 times. No idea what she's done with all the cars.
Everyone wants that Porsche
But Iga needs one more color to complete her collection.
Genuinely curious. Does she have to pay tax on those Porsches? Can she opt for cash?
In Poland you don’t have to pay tax for winning a material price in a sports competition. I’m not sure about the cash

Clay specialist kerber remains the only player to win the Charleston Stuttgart double
A 500 getting 9 of the top 10 is probably a sign they need more tournaments

Is there an equivalent on the men's tour? I know Barcelona has a bigger draw than the others.

lol did you just start watching women's tennis? stuttgart has always been a high profile event
Why do I love that they used the most casual Ostapenko pic
I can’t tell if it’s a genuine smile or a sarcastic one 😂 but she does seem happy!
She looks like she's planning something diabolical, and most likely was.
her and coco giving the smile you give your coworkers when you pass down the hallway lol
🙂
I was so surprised to see Zheng up close, she’s taller and more athletic than you see on tv.

I hope Iga has a big garage for all those Porsches
I think she gave one to her Dad.
AKA Iga Open
she had the blue and red. wonder what the next color is gonna be. her sister wants one too, i guess.
why is sakkari not going?
It’s not a mandatory event, so probably a matter of personal choice.
I've heard Greeks and Germans don't quite get along... /s
I made Jelena's face https://imgur.com/a/u6OXLTx
I think we can all agree Iga doesn't *need* a third Porsche, but I would still like to see another Świątek - Sabalenka classic in the final.
No, we can't. Her sister still hasn't got one.

Nice overview! The table is helpful.
Thanks that’s appreciated :)
Not so fast. Players might still withdraw
hope saba gets her porsche this year
And I hope Iga gets 3rd
Dude that’s exciting! Is someone gonna stop Iga. I don’t think so. Not yet, but it’s really entertaining.

Stuttgart deserves to make the Super Tour its such a unique and interesting event

In 2022 Stuttgart was tougher than Madrid. It annoyed the shit out of me because Iga could have won 5 straight 1000's if she played Madrid instead.
time for Sabalenka to make the final and lose again lol. cursed tournament for her
