He already does slice most of the time. I remember in the match against Alcaraz at wimby last year his 2 hander hit the net more often than it went over. Hard to get worse than that.
Yeah, but he's lose even more points where he attempts a topspin one hander than a topspin two hander.
In fairness to your point, however, he'd most considerable ranking likely either way if he tried always going over the ball on the backhand.
With Norries “career ending loss” and big D winning his first title and now being British number 1, this feels like a “passing of the torch” moment in British tennis. Look forward to watching more of big D, shame he will probably play Alcaraz in r2 of Queens.
Also Dan Evans and Murray dropping in the rankings, definitely feels like the passing of the torch moment. Hopefully some juniors will step up eventually to join Draper
Draper has an excellent return and Alcaraz a relatively weak serve compared to the rest of the top 10, so I can see Draper troubling him, but let’s see how it goes, Draper does have awful conditioning and not much time to rest.
Because he has awful conditioning. It's practically a miracle that he's lasted to the end of a tournament, never mind won it.
The LTA, the British tennis organisation which (supposedly) supports and trains young British players, is famous for it's piss-poor approach to conditioning training, and for players who came through its system having bodies of glass (a system mostly put in place by Draper's father, Roger). That's why Murray got sent to Spain to train—Judy Murray was rightfully unimpressed with the LTA.
I'm pretty sure Murray went to Spain on his own initiative after seeing the success if his peers over in the Spanish academies. He asked his mum to go.
He convinced her (Rafa told him that he’d trained with Moya and Andy went insane), but Jamie’s experience at the lta who “ruined his forehand” (Andy) probably helped.
I'm an Alcaraz fan but I honestly don't think it's the death of Draper here. Draper's 1R opponent is literally a nobody off clay. Like genuinely has played one grass match in years for example. He literally could sleep through his first round match. Alcaraz just won RG, has been shaky this year, first match back on grass, etc. Draper isn't done for like people are saying he is.
When will former tennis professional Cam Norrie join the ranks of Roger Federer, Charles Barkley, and Dame Judi Dench in accepting his career is over and retiring gracefully??
Congrats to Draper for winning his first title. This match was really good, especially the tiebreak in the second set. After the first set I was confident Berrettini would win, but Draper impressed me and played incredibly.
Berrettini was coming in hot, but Draper really turned that match around. He seamlessly threw in some serve and volleys throughout the tournament too - a lot of times players do that as a last-ditch effort to try something new when they're behind, but he did it at the right times and made it look easy to score a few points.
I hope he can stay healthy; really looking forward to see what both these gents can do at Wimbledon
Congrats to Draper, beating Matteo in a final on grass is nothing to sneeze at. First main tour title, I wonder whether he's going to carry this momentum to the Queen's first round matchup againts Carlos. Matteo's is clearly not phisycally optimal yet, which is only fair considering the amount of time he spent injured. I really hope he stays healthy, and who knows? He may actually be a favourite to win Toronto. Also, worst closing ceremony I've ever seen. Literally a 20 minutes unskippable ad
The closing ceremony was comically bad and awkward. They designed the bike for Matteo and all of a sudden are like “both men are getting a bike now”. And then the sponsor said the most jumbled explanation of the bike and said the word “future” like 50 times.
Haha I forgot about him, I considered him last year when Jack basically missed the whole season and Ben had a breakout. But this year he’s kinda forgettable. I’m sorry Ben 😭
Its the fact Duckworth didnt win any points on Shelton serve till the break which cost Shelton the match. Crazy how it turned against him. He was playing decently up until that point.
Sheltons problem is that he just doesn't know how to play on grass yet. His peak serve is probably the best on tour but it lacks consistency and he needs to learn how to balance going for aces
What a way to get your first Tour level title, beating the current biggest grass specialist from a set down and break point down on grass, moving into the Top 32 of the world for the first time in your career. Basically secures that Draper will be seeded at Wimbledon for the first time too
The big server to make noise at Wimbledon we were somewhat waiting for. Curious to see how Tommy Paul fares vs Alcaraz at Queen’s, he’s given Alcaraz trouble on the faster courts before.
TPaul, Jarry, Hubi, Shelton, Berretini and now Draper, might make noise in Week 1
Always super bitter day ruined type of feeling when your favourite player loss a final after a great run, but Jack played well done and deserved title in good hands 👍
This was such an awkward moment....
'Guy says the Boss bike was meant for Berrettini... so now they will have to give another bike to Draper... whatthe...'

That is a seriously awesome win for Draper Good weeks for both heading into Wimbledon
On the flip side he’ll probably be tired for Queens and lose to Alcaraz fairly easily now
On the flop side that will leave him with more energy for Wimby.
True. Wimbledon co-favorite with Korda and Shapo

Draper’s snuck has way into the seeds with this win, so he’ll be a scary round 3 draw for one of the top players
Serve to the backhand got him out of jail again and again, first in the 2nd set saving BP, then again in the 3rd. Matteo, that backhand…
Grass helps it a bit because of slices but damn it hurts to watch it
I don't know why he doesn't just switch to a one-hander at this point. I don't think it could be any worse than his two hander.
He'd literally drop out of the top 300 if he switched to a one hander full time, unless he nominally switched and in reality just sliced all the time.
A very handsome match up 😂. Happy for Jack. New British #1!!
A feast for the eyes

Searle is promising
He’s a dangerous opponent for Alcaraz with it being only his 2nd match on grass this year, could easily see it going to 3 close sets
I think Alcaraz wins it very comfortably but I’d like to see Draper give him a match.
Might go out R1 with a first title hangover
He is playing Navone on grass, highly unlikely
his Challenger loss? how is it career ending

oh gotcha, thanks
I have a feeling it’s more of a shame for Alcaraz Good test for the both of them
Draper has an excellent return and Alcaraz a relatively weak serve compared to the rest of the top 10, so I can see Draper troubling him, but let’s see how it goes, Draper does have awful conditioning and not much time to rest.
why u say draper has awful conditioning?

correct
Fair enough, you're right. I think I was remembering that Judy has been pretty unguarded more recently about her opinions on the LTA.
I'm an Alcaraz fan but I honestly don't think it's the death of Draper here. Draper's 1R opponent is literally a nobody off clay. Like genuinely has played one grass match in years for example. Rublev can now stop saying Draper for atp videos 😂
I'm expecting the ATP socials interns to make a congratulatory video with him tbh
I hope Rublev himself does it on his socials too!😂😭 he waited so long
My favourite part of the match was in the 2nd set tiebreak at 5-6 when Jack said it's drapin' time and draped all over 'Tini
A lot of people are gonna be asking for that drapin' in the years to come.
wow he MIGHT have a chance against Navone🤯🤯
lol wouldn’t surprise me if he loses after his first title win.
clearly don't watch tennis
You clearly don’t lol, it’s a very common thing for players to lose after their maiden title. It takes a lot mentally and physically
Draper gladly proving me wrong
Draper absolute beast when he’s fit, will do wonders for his confidence. Hopefully the start of something big 🔥
Congrats to Draper for winning his first title. This match was really good, especially the tiebreak in the second set. After the first set I was confident Berrettini would win, but Draper impressed me and played incredibly.
Draper's just 22 and now the British #1 and world #31. If he can stay healthy, things are looking up for his tennis career!
Definitely wouldn’t surprise me if he’s top 10 in a few years time
Berrettini was coming in hot, but Draper really turned that match around. 3rd time is the charm for Draper. Finally gets an ATP level title after losing the previous 2 finals (both also went to 3 sets).
Awesome win and great for Jack as he'll be seeded at Wimbledon now for the first time I believe.
First title for Draper!
Congrats to Draper, beating Matteo in a final on grass is nothing to sneeze at. Yeah i second this on the closing. It was so awkward when they were talking about having painted the bike matteo's colours
My prediction of Carlos, Jannik, Holger and Jack being the 2000s Gen Big 4 is shaping up nicely 😇. I think Jiri can be Tomas Berdych though 😄
Ben Shelton erasure
Haha I forgot about him, I considered him last year when Jack basically missed the whole season and Ben had a breakout. But this year he’s kinda forgettable. I’m sorry Ben 😭
Draper playing the way I'm expecting a fellow lefty with big serve Ben Shelton should be.
I mean Draper has probably practised on grass courts his entire life, I think Shelton played on grass for the first time in 2023.
True, I'm just being subjective. Shelton shouldn't have had any problem beating Duckworth even if he couldn't be a threat to Berrettini in QF.
Tournament director saying my daughter loves Draper in his speech 💀
Genuinely the most odd trophy ceremony and director speeches I’ve ever seen on the ATP
On-court interviewer joking with Draper saying “I know why you won today” with him looking so confused
What a way to get your first Tour level title, beating the current biggest grass specialist from a set down and break point down on grass, moving into the Top 32 of the world for the first time in your career. Basically secures that Draper will be seeded at Wimbledon for the first time too
About damn time he got one 😭
Legend says there were a lot more ladies than usual watching this match.
Fitting that Inter Wetten was a sponsor since that's the effect Berrettini has on women
What a battle! This was the first non GS tourney I’ve followed and it was a blast. All in on Draper!
Well done Jack - watched every point ❤️
Congrats Draper! So happy for him.
Gutted for Berrettini but yeah Draper is a fuckin grass court wizard
Always super bitter day ruined type of feeling when your favourite player loss a final after a great run, but Jack played well done and deserved title in good hands 👍
First ATP title LFGGGG 🥳
I hope they both remain healthy and don't get bird flu/super covid/fall down a well/slip on a banana etc. Well done Jack!
DraprGOAT has arrived
Aww, his first ATP title -- congrats, Draper!
This was such an awkward moment.... 'Guy says the Boss bike was meant for Berrettini... so now they will have to give another bike to Draper... whatthe...' [https://x.com/Stroppa\_Del/status/1802330670577995878](https://x.com/Stroppa_Del/status/1802330670577995878)
Berrettini: top10 serve and forehand, but the rest… oh my gosh
His backhand slice is good too...
Both played well in this match and look dangerous for Wimbledon.
Draperrrrrrr 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I’m honestly surprised. Good win for Draper 👍🏻
Awesome that his 1st title is on grass. I turned it on right before Matteo took off his shirt. Glad I didn’t miss it.
