Male =/= man. Someone can be a woman and anatomically/reproductively male.
Gender: Mental and social. Man/woman/[Other: please write in your answer]
Sex: Genetics, anatomy, hormones, and other biological things. Male/female/[the gradient in-between that is intersexuality]
I know intersex people exist and they’re usually brought up in these conversations, but generally speaking I don’t understand the need to separate gender and sex.
When all of this started I thought it was great, we could finally overcome societal expectations based on genitalia. But then people started identifying as different genders based on behaviors and interests. Doesn’t that do the opposite of what we were aiming for and actually perpetuate the stereotypes?
Why not just be whatever you were born as biologically and not let your genitalia or society dictate how you behave or dress?
I’ve tried to understand this stuff, especially as a teacher who sometimes encounters kids going through various gender-related issues. I have yet to come to a clear understanding of it all though.
Because it’s painful, I would do pretty much anything to be a girl (no killing) and almost every time I look in a mirror I hate myself because who I am on the outside isn’t who I am on the inside, I’m planning on starting HRT probably next year and then getting bottom surgery later in life because I can’t stand the way I look
There is a very real possibility that the gender politics of the past 5 years doesn’t last. It should surprise no one that older people, particularly ones who lived through the women’s rights movement of the 1970’s are not going to agree to go along with it. Most of them think just like that Harry Patter lady and find the whole thing very offensive.
Controversy pays. As long as it pisses someone off on any side of the spectrum it will be used for marketing or political purposes. It means it'll outlast everyone alive now.
I am not taking a position on it. I am simply saying as an issue it is entirely likely that it doesn’t catch on. It’s not a widespread experience and so there’s no reason to think that the masses are going to agree to do away with gender. I think you might be underestimating the importance of gender to the vast majority of people.
