How smooth, my parents told me to go outside and fetch them a switch. Flexible and covered in broken branches. Something diabolical forcing children to choose their own implement of corporal punishment
Be pretty hard to accomplish with a wooden hanger! I don’t even want to think about it 😳
You don’t see wire hangers much anymore, a truly versatile product if ever there was one.
Locked car opener, emergency muffler hanger, house rule enforcer, abortion tool, and you can hang your shirt up on it.
What the fuck was done to you with a power cord? And what the fuck was done with a coat hanger? The only things in this image I understand are the paddle and the belt (not because they were used on me of course).
It's weird how you can have a family member who sometimes lashes out without warning build a twitchy response in you then acts like you're weird for reacting poorly to their unexpected movements.
I remember one Christmas my brother (6 years my senior) was given an electric razor, and for whatever reason thought it would be funny to act like he was going to jab me in the crotch with it. I swept my hand around on instinct to block it, and it sent his new razor flying across the room, and somehow this was my fault.
It's like being mad at the dog you've trained to attack for attacking. It's bullshit.
I have an innate reaction to my brother moving, he's not a bad brother and I do love him but he did constantly physically bully me as a kid to the extent y twitch or protect myself instinctually (I also automatically shut off my breathing as soon as his hand is near my nose, you know, pocket farts and the like).
It's crazy how even after he hasn't done that in literal years, more than 7, I still react like that because of childhood and it's even crazier when I mention it to friends with older brothers and they just look at me funny because apparently it's not a greatly shared experience.
He did use to get a bit mad that I'd always react like that even after but he worked it over in therapy and realised it wasn't normal for his brother to be instinctively afraid of him.
and blindly swear allegiance, let your country control your mind!

Being violent towards your children teaches them to be… not violent? Makes sense, right? I mean pretty much all studies point to the opposite but my gut tells me different. Gut science is what we want!
Teaching kids about violence is important.
Yeah we sure won't ruin your life with the behavioural issues we develop, before abandoning you in an old folks home where young people will beat you in your old age. Ahh the cycle of life.
We are born, we get hit by oldies, and if we work hard, one day we can hit them too.
Outro track - what a wonderful world.
It absolutely works, the parent feels so much better afterwards.
I mean, the kid will be permanently scarred and the parent will probably wonder why they don't have a close relationship as adults, but in the moment it was pretty gratifying (for the parent).
Yeah because nothing says a good parent like beating your children untill they're too scared to defend their rights.
EDIT: the replies are a war zone because some people think it's okay to hit your children as ''dicipline'', enter at your own risk
Spare the Rod spoil the child, proverbs 13:24. But also, they’re using “rod” as a metaphor for discipline, and there’s nothing explicitly indicating you have to beat your kids, just discipline them, which yeah, you should do, but like with time outs and shit that’s actually proven effective.
I’m autistic, so my parents would just explain to me why what I did was wrong (along with timeouts and stuff because I was definitely still a little shit), it’s caused me to have an easy time reasoning through things and be best friends with my parents. We play Fortnite and shitpost and watch the same YouTubers and stuff. I love them
Edit: Thank you guys so much for the kind words :) My parents also say thank you!
Funfact, in hebrew the original wording for 'Spare the Rod' is Timenai Shavat, with Shavat having a closer meaning to scepter. As in a King's scepter.
The passage is instructing parents to be guiding authority figures so that their children can grow up and learn right from wrong. It's got nothing to do with corporal punishment.
In Proverbs, it literally says "Spare the rod, spoil the child." Sociopaths have taken that to mean "God loves those who beat and bully children." The Bible is a horror show, and truly idgaf what it says.
The Bible also says to have your disobedient stoned to death (Deuteronomy 21:18-21) and that it and that happy will be those who dash the infants of enemy combatants against stones (Psalm 137:9)
Thou should also not picketh and choseth which parts of the OT thou finest convenient.
(Working on the Sabbath, using mixed-fabric cloth, and shellfish, to name but a few. There’s also far less eye-gouging than there should be…)
Even though that isn't the exact Proverbs quote, the direcr being "he who spares the rod hates his child, he who loves his child is diligent to discipline him"- which like everything in the Bible is either taken as a metaphor, literally, or cherrypicked out depending on who you ask what it means.
At the end of the day it's literally inspired Michael Pearl"s "To Train Up a Child", which is a manual on how to properly beat your children so that they never question your authority. It has intructions on beating children as young as infants with objects! It is a known, published book, used in fundie circles like the Duggar's, and has led to the death of around 7 children due to what it preaches. Rachel Oates has a great video on how awful it is. The Bible inspired that shit, so once again, idgaf about what it says.
Old-fashioned saying. said to mean that if you do not punish a child when they do something wrong, they will not learn what is right. - Dictionary of Cambridge.
Christians seem to think the only form of valid punishment is beating the kid senseless.
Hey that's really sad to hear man, if you ever decide you want to let him back into your heart and try to show him you can love him again let me know where he is I'll beat his ass with a belt for you.
I don’t have that but I was physically punished. But I’m the exception. My parents didn’t beat me until I couldn’t walk. They showed restraint and only did it as a last resort thing. But there are parents out there that get some weird pleasure from beating their children, or they don’t have the temperament to just talk to them and explain to them why things are bad. They immediately go to yelling and beating.
I mean beating a child is pretty much the ultimate flex of power.
Never said it was a strong, righteous or moral form of power, but that just shows how pathetically some people strive for "power"
My sisters and I are in our 50s and are still trying to reconcile the childhood beatings.
Mom and Dad wonder why we kids can't just leave the past in the past.
i feel this since so much. My oldest sister was physically abused (got the belt all the time), somehow the middle sister was fine and avoided it, but by the time I rolled around, my mother moved over the emotional abuse full time. I still got the belt (it was the 80ies so it was still not that frowned upon), but not to the point i would call what I got physical abuse- but the emotional abuse took years of therapy to work through.
I have 0 problems with religion. Even better if the followers of the religion are devout pacifists. The problem comes along when religion is used to justify things like abuse and authoritarianism; then I have a problem. Looking at you, neoconservatives.
"If your parents used systemic violence to condition you into docile behavior, you won't protest against the government taking away your rights".
But, by the same logic, those abused children shouldn't protest the loss of gun-bearing rights either, right ?
i guess it's supposed to be "if your parents beat you then you learned to listen to them and if you listened to your parents you would listen to the government too riiiiiight?"
Well it won't kill you IF it's not connected, while off it can be used to hit around the limbs where it will wrap around and the chord at the end leaves a bruise wherever it lands.
Yep, these memes always forget the closed fist because these people like to pretend that it is about discipline and not about hurting people you have power over.
And them hurting people that they have power over is why we riot.
Well they're pro-birth. Once the baby is born these dudes give 0 fucks what happens. If they did there are plethora of issues they can address that would make kids live's better today. But naw, only the unborn get rights
I was beaten as a kid and all it taught me is how to not get caught, how to lie on the spot and how to have fun while no one is looking and make the most out of it before I inevitably get grounded again
All it taught me was say and do whatever i need to in order to not get in trouble, and to be super quiet as to not wake the beast after school before mom got home
I guess your parents were more consistent in their punishment. My dad would find a way to get angry at something no matter what. Just by being my teenage stupid self and making mistakes I was already in trouble. So it just engraved in my brain to never try because it is futile and just do what you want while you have the opportunity because it will be taken away inevitably.
Can't say if that's better or worse, we both got fucked over in regards of parenting i guess
Ah yes, beating your child into hiding who they are from you. Also, they're more likely to be the ones rioting because they have a reason to hate your ideology. It's sort of like kidnapping someone and forcing you're way of life against you and then get offended when they escape and speak out about your ideology
It's really sad because you can link study after study that shows 1) hitting kids doesn't fix the behavior problem, and 2) causes a myriad of other behavior problems down the road.
And they just reply, "WeLl i WuZ HiT aND I tUrnEd OuT FiNe"
My dad used to use his hand and a leather belt.
My mom used reasoning, grounding as discipline, and took toys away until I learned not to do what I did wrong.
I don't have kids. But if I did, I would discipline them like my mother did.
Fuck yeah unquestionable leadership.
No questions no critiques only pain.
The only one to follow is me or else i whoop your ass.
I can't be wrong or else i punish u
Yeah you're a submissive boot licker with self-hate and a repressed personality 😋 😋 😋 yummy yummy repression from physically being beaten as a defenceless child
Force ‘em to give birth, leave the families to starve, tell ‘em to beat the kids into submission at every opportunity, then recruit the dumb, starving, submissive kids to be dumb, submissive troops in money-driven wars. USA! USA!
I don't see the hockey stick with the air holes
Those are speed holes.
Hurt like a mother fucker too. Nothing more humiliating than being given welts with your own hockey stick.
Speaking of speed holes-have you ever been whacked with hot wheels track?! Sweet Jesus.
The flexy orange one? Fuck that thing
Yup and that's the worst thing next to an extension cord.
Jumper cables.
The car only had one previous owner. James Bond.
This post be trying to look cool but they don’t even have the wooden spoon. SMH
All fun and games until they pull out the M4A2 Sherman war tank
M6A2? I got the M1A2 damn it

Or as it is called in my country, Suomi perkele ja ruotti on perseestä
Wood spoon is for rookies. My parents used a dowel. Hurt like a mother.
How smooth, my parents told me to go outside and fetch them a switch. Flexible and covered in broken branches. Something diabolical forcing children to choose their own implement of corporal punishment
I was wondering why the paddle lacked holes...
Floorball stick?
Where are the jumper cables?
Or a fly swatter
I got the metal version
Came here to say the exact same thing
Yeah I got the holy spatula. The holes add many many more mph
Good point, you should probably regularly let yourself be beaten with those as an adult too just to be sure.
Do feel that power cord tho
My ass hurts just from looking at it
My whole body hurts
Coat hanger? Was abortion used as an attitude adjustment?
Yup.
Be pretty hard to accomplish with a wooden hanger! I don’t even want to think about it 😳 You don’t see wire hangers much anymore, a truly versatile product if ever there was one. Locked car opener, emergency muffler hanger, house rule enforcer, abortion tool, and you can hang your shirt up on it.
Don’t forget about a makeshift tv antenna

As a kid I was hit with a belt, phone book, towel, hand, sticks, various things I don't remember and a cord. The cord hurt the most by far.
well it's illegal to use anything other than the bare palm on the buttock is most states now so at least things are better
Imagine living in a country where smacking a child is legal
Sorry that happened to you
The power cord and Mortal Combat’s Scorpion are intertwined in my childhood memories.
What the fuck was done to you with a power cord? And what the fuck was done with a coat hanger? The only things in this image I understand are the paddle and the belt (not because they were used on me of course).
They would beat your ass with them. Fortunately my parents didn't use the power cord. That's maybe the most evil one in the picture
They jab a three-prong into you and say “Now you’re grounded”
I mean, I never got beat with a cord or a hanger, but it doesn't take much imagination to straighten out a coathanger and use it as a switch.
Oh okay with a wire hanger, but this one was made out of wood and I didn’t understand what you’d do with that.

That's unfortunatly true.
:( I am now afraid of people because of that.
And now every time someone near me raises their hand... I twitch Edit: yes, people get surprised, even those whose fault it was.
It's weird how you can have a family member who sometimes lashes out without warning build a twitchy response in you then acts like you're weird for reacting poorly to their unexpected movements. Being violent towards your children teaches them to be… not violent? Makes sense, right? I mean pretty much all studies point to the opposite but my gut tells me different. Gut science is what we want!
But what kind of pathetic adult needs a weapon to fight a child?
Don't want to throw a shoulder out overreaching. Need the extra length of the weapon more than the power.
My elder sister certainly gave me a kink or two I suppose
And give them a lifetime of mental health issues. Thanks. :((

The people beaten by these things stormed the Capitol on January 6. They absolutely did riot.

When i hit my brother, i don't even lie to myself. I am not like my parents, i don't like to pretend i am teaching them.
You're just hitting himfor the sake of it??
No, i hit him when he is purposely annoying me.
okay
Completely justified.
What the fuck? Stop??
HELL YEAHHHH I FUCKING LOVE BEATING MY KIDS GIVING THEM MENTAL AND POSSIBLY PHYSICAL TRAUMA FOR YEARS LETS FUCKING GOOOOOO
According to my father, the bible says that you have to beat your kids to love them. (We don't love each other now)
Where the fuck does it ever say that in the Bible?? I’m sorry but it sounds like you’re dad’s just making shit up to excuse his shitty behavior.
Yes, he is full of shit. He's one of those adults who never matured mentally and thinks his opinions are superior to others.
Oof. Yeah, I don’t ever want to become that when I have kids.
same as my narcissistic father
Spare the Rod spoil the child, proverbs 13:24. But also, they’re using “rod” as a metaphor for discipline, and there’s nothing explicitly indicating you have to beat your kids, just discipline them, which yeah, you should do, but like with time outs and shit that’s actually proven effective.
Yeah. My parents never beat me and I think I turned out fine.

That's so nice
I’m really happy for you. A bit jealous but that’s ok, good for you.

This is why I appreciate having Hebrew nerds around when discussing evangelical Bible takes.
Evangelicals read the Bible like fourth graders
Well. It also says that you should stoned unruly children. So both can be accepted

Pretty crazy that it’s the rule of law according to our very own Supreme Court.
Yep, he's definitely Christian then
Its not written in the Bible, it's written in the wal-mart handbook. The worshipers overlap alot tho so I can see how ol dad got mixed up.
Hey that's really sad to hear man, if you ever decide you want to let him back into your heart and try to show him you can love him again let me know where he is I'll beat his ass with a belt for you.
there’s no hate like christian love💖
I guess my parents never loved me.
Yeah, that’s called domestic violence, and they belong in hell.
I was beaten (or atleast smacked red) for being violent to bullies Didn't help, just made me less tolerable
What? Did they want you to not defend yourself?
They wanted me to, uhhhhhhhhh, talk it out and/or ignore them Granted, I did go overboard this one time and bit one in the scalp
I mean my dad was cold and methodical about it and claimed that if he wasn't angry when he did it then it was okay. It wasn't.
My sisters and I are in our 50s and are still trying to reconcile the childhood beatings. Mom and Dad wonder why we kids can't just leave the past in the past.
If you were beaten into submission by you’re parents, you’re probably not out standing up for your rights, right now…
PERPETUATE THE CYCLE OF ABUSE HOOOOO-WEEEEEE
"if you were physically abused your ptsd will stop you from fighting oppression and this is a good thing"
Emotional abuse does that too, they don't even need to leave scars. It's sad.
i feel this since so much.
I mean I guess? If you are beaten into submission maybe you will have fear of questioning authority even when it’s deserved
Either a fear of questioning authority or outright contempt for it.
That's right, and one of the main purposes of religion.
I have 0 problems with religion. Even better if the followers of the religion are devout pacifists. The problem comes along when religion is used to justify things like abuse and authoritarianism; then I have a problem. Looking at you, neoconservatives.
You can have authoritarianism without religion. If you tried getting rid of religion, that would be authoritarian.
If that coat hanger was wire, it would speak to the next generation of Americans... too soon?
Previous generations had coat hangars too.. w no abortion rights..
What the fuck is that even supposed to mean How is there a correlation between child abuse as a parenting tactic and abortion
It's more like: "If you got beaten you'd be a good Christian and stop rioting when good Christian things happen".

Yeah I was looking for this one lol As well as the flexible, simple stick
Yes, because I have enough psychological trauma and I don't want the police adding to it.

The electrical cord has me really worried
Well it won't kill you IF it's not connected, while off it can be used to hit around the limbs where it will wrap around and the chord at the end leaves a bruise wherever it lands.
That's if they do it "right". If they do it "wrong" the prongs can draw blood
Don't forget *La Chancla*
I've been hit with most if not all of these - and more - as an adult, and the only thing keeping me from rioting is this damned covid-19.
A power cord... man y'all need therapy
Only thing missing is the jumper cables.
The legend u/rogersimon10
Was looking for this comment. Took way too long. 😆
Got most of those at a younger age, later in adolescence it turned to punches and headbutts. Still want to fucking roit, especially now
Yep, these memes always forget the closed fist because these people like to pretend that it is about discipline and not about hurting people you have power over. And them hurting people that they have power over is why we riot.
Had a dad beat the living shit outta me with a belt growing up, fuck yeah I’m protesting. Taught me to get angrier and louder.
Clearly whoever made this meme never talked to a Latino kid cause I don’t see a chancla.
So the ones crying about "baby killers" also approve of child abuse? No surprise there.
Well they're pro-birth. Once the baby is born these dudes give 0 fucks what happens. If they did there are plethora of issues they can address that would make kids live's better today. But naw, only the unborn get rights

where is the LONG wooden spatula
Who’s getting hit with a damn coat hanger?
The particularly young
That'd be me when I was 8 and failed to hang the clothes up properly in the closet.
I did. For not making the beds. When I was 9.
The American fetus
You haven’t seen [mommie dearest](https://youtu.be/tUkE9qaVgmo)?
“Riots because I say they are.”
Hickory switches should be here. Those are awful.
A power cord? Sweet jesus...
Whats a devise
Ah yes, beating your child into hiding who they are from you. Also, they're more likely to be the ones rioting because they have a reason to hate your ideology. It's sort of like kidnapping someone and forcing you're way of life against you and then get offended when they escape and speak out about your ideology
Looks like tools to perform at home abortions. And leave women dead or injured and unable to seek medical care for fear of the law.
How tf is it that people who are most vocal about free speech are against it whenever it's not about something they believe in.
Is this a Proud Boys thing?
Well as i remember i was the most rebellious kid in the family if i dont like someone's attitude with me i would just fight with him
People will certainly be using the coat hanger more often after yesterday.
Bullfucking shit I promise everyone that thought "I should overthrow democracy" was beaten as a fucking child
Alternatively, this also means that people that approve of beating kids want more people to have kids.
The promotion of child abuse by the right is disgusting.
It's really sad because you can link study after study that shows 1) hitting kids doesn't fix the behavior problem, and 2) causes a myriad of other behavior problems down the road. And they just reply, "WeLl i WuZ HiT aND I tUrnEd OuT FiNe"
No. Nonono. It's only been the past few years I've been able to wear a belt, I hated the sight of one when I was little.
I suspect they're not wrong. People who tend to be controlling of women also tend to abuse their children as well.
I can't believe assaulting a child is legal in the US
You forgot the lit cigarette in the spanking hand.
My dad used to use his hand and a leather belt. My mom used reasoning, grounding as discipline, and took toys away until I learned not to do what I did wrong. I don't have kids. But if I did, I would discipline them like my mother did.
People who unironically post this deserve to be introduced to that attitude adjustment instrument called a baseball bat.
Yes I would be submissive and breedable then🤤🤤🤤
??? I was beaten with a long bamboo stick
