A few years ago, there was talk of remaking it and Cary Elwes tweeted out a perfect response.
"There's a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one"
The only way I would ever watch any sort of remake would have to be done by the Muppets. If they actually tried to modernize the visual effects or cast current people to do a legit remake....This being my favorite movie of all time, I think I would have to skip it. Unless the Muppets did it.
Wouldn't it, though?? Maybe: Kermit as Wesley, Ms. Piggy as Buttercup, Gonzo as Inigo, Sweetums as Fezzik, Pepe the King Prawn as Vizzini, and so forth...probly won't ever happen, but the only acceptable remake option in my book.
In order for me to see it, the creators would have to be somehow approved by the OG cast and crew, and do something special. However I would love to see three special scenes that were in the book but not in the movie. 1. Fezik’s back story, 2. Inigo’s back story and training and 3. Zoo of death
Agreed! It would be really cool to see those scenes come to life!
Personally I think that a musical boroadway version would be great, but as for another movie remake…it definitely has to have the OG casts approval for it, but I doubt they’d get it because the OG cast seems very adamant that there shouldn’t be a remake
A mini series with every characters back story.
Why did the king's stinking son fire Miracle Max?
What kind of perils did Inigo face while-a studying nothing but-a fencing?
What other wars did Vizzini start?
What was Fezzik's childhood like that got him into fighting but left him gentle?
What made Valerie fall in love with Max to become his witch, er, wife?
What really went down with Rugan and the sword seen through the eyes of an adult?
Why is the Albino...... well, weird?
What's up with the fire swamp?
What happened aboard the Dread Pirate Robert's ship that spared Westley's life?
Brandon Sanderson hinted that his book, Tress of the Emerald Sea, which is a retelling of The Princess Bride with Buttercup (Tress) being an active protagonist, was potentially getting an animated feature, though the book does differ in some major ways.
I’ve thought about this thoroughly I wouldn’t call it The Princess Bride I’d call it A Tale of High Adventure and market it as PB remake.
The only thing is I would add larger backstories to Inigo/Fezzik/Vinzini/Humperdink
Something that was included in the book but not the movie.
So torn because the original is just ... amazing. But also, having another one won't remove it from existence, so I'd say go for it.
One thing (the only thing) I never liked about the original was how helpless Buttercup was, and how she just gives up at every turn. I'd love Robin Wright to get to come back and have another chance to play an older and stronger Buttercup.
Yeah true, that’s the only flaw I find. I wouldn’t fault her so much for her not being a more active protagonist - she had her moments like promising to marry Humperdinck if he didn’t hurt Westley or seeing through the lie about the ships. But I agree she kept giving up too fast, maybe that’s something that could have been expanded on.
As much as I want to, I can’t see what other qualities besides beauty and maybe being well-spoken she had that inspired Westley’s love for her. Maybe if she’d interacted more with others besides just Westley and Humperdinck, like the subjects or Inigo and Fezzik, it would have made all the difference in her character.
Well they would have to get permission from the Morganstern estate which is notoriously difficult to deal with.
I read once some post saying that the Muppets should do a Princess Bride which in my opinion would work quite well.
A new version would most likely involve 'modernization' of the main characters. I'm not sure I'd like that, but I wouldn't mind Buttercup being a little stronger.
She got a bit whiny in The Fireswamp I thought.
Also - Cary Elwes wrote a book about the making which is a fabulous read. Apparently Andre the Giant drank more than a dozen bottles of wine every day!

I agree with this 100%

I thought I heard a rumour that https://www.theprincessbrideonstage.com
Well first you'd need to find a necromancer to bring either Andre or Micheal Clarke Duncan.
Make it a mini series and have it be as close to book accurate as possible. Different enough from the movie to avoid pissing off the core base.

Hmmmmm. Yesss.....a backstory story would maybe work.... Conceivable!
Fred Savage could narrate
I think I would watch it, just to see if it brings justice to the original, but I would wait until it came out on streaming servicez

its perfection, you dont remake that.

Refuse to watch it. Like how I’m refusing to watch the remake of Interview with the Vampire
