I went to Cuba before Covid. It was a really eye opening experience. Anytime I see a tankie praising them, I want them to go and actually live there for a week and see if they feel the same.
When I went there it was bonkers how poor people were. Free medical care? Amazing. But why are these kids only wearing underwear outside and everyone in these villages is begging for pencils and used t shirts?
I was there as a rep with a Jewish humanitarian aid organization, the JDC. We were refilling a synagogue pharmacy that was open to the public. The main things they asked us to bring without needing a script was prenatal vitamins, antidiaherrals, and antihistamines. We took a tour of the government pharmacies and they were almost completely barren and the few boxes of medicine on the shelf were all expired.
There were parts of Cuba that were stunning. Amazing art scene, gorgeous landscapes. The people were very nice to us, but they knew why we were there. Everyone we talked to begged us to not forget about them. Things were very desperate. I don’t think people from say America can really appreciate things like food rations and only being allowed to get meat once a month if you’re lucky.
Will never forget how many people told us they “lived on Alcatraz” when they found out I was from California.
My tour guide was a real patriot though. Loved Cuba and couldn’t say enough nice things about it.
He got a passport when he finally saved enough cash and immediately fled to the United States.
If there is no strong private sector to balance the power of the government, then the government can and *will* do whatever it wants. Democracy can't survive socialism.
