Gnome is a desktop, which is the part of the system that you can see: the wallpaper, taskbar, window decorations, menus etc. Unlike in Windows, in Linux systems you can choose which desktop you prefer.
Gnome is a popular desktop, it's the default with distros like Fedora and Ubuntu, but it's not very popular with power users because it's not very customizable. You can download a Fedora Spin - spins are what they call the version with different desktops. Same system, but looks different.
KDE Plasma is another major desktop environment for Li ux - it looks a lot like Windows out of the box so it's very intuitive to newbies, but it's highly customizable and unlike some alternatives it doesn't require any technical knowledge to do so. Plasma is very popular with Windows refugees, and there's a Fedora Spin for it. I think it's a good choice for someone looking to get into Linux.
Essentially
https://fedoraproject.org/
Press Get Fedora, Press spins
KDE desktop for a windows 11 like experience
LXQT Desktop for something lightweight
Look into it!
I may get downvoted by other Linux users for this, but GNOME (the default desktop) is clunky, and is better suited as a tablet interface.
Oh, i just heard fedora for advanced users and requires manual installation for some drivers or codecs, anyway i will also look up fedora. Seems intresting.
Lalas usually recommend Linux From Scratch, but don't listen to them, they're evil!
Jokes aside, Fedora, Linux Mint, and Ubuntu are good beginner distributions. All of them are compatible, but you'll need to find workarounds to get the fingerprint working. Everything else works out of the box.
Hi! just as a sidenote, i do also own a t480 and even though i did not stick with GNOME because i wanted to give it a shot to my SwayWM dotfiles, Debian is a pretty smooth experience so far! you'll most probably need to remove games that it will install by default, but other than that you should be fine!
edit: also im curious to know if the character shown behind is from ff xiv?
It's not necessary if u can add the settings manually, I had previously installed it to set the battery threshholds, so that they charge only from 45% to 55% as I mostly keep the laptop connected to the charger. But I did the mistake of just updating all this time and it updated my bios, so undervolting is locked now.
It killed undervolting for me, tried all settings or workarounds online but my t480 just won't underclock anymore, it shows the offset being applied but nothing happens, I can apply -250mv and it will just work as normal, where as before applying anything over -110mv would result in a BSOD.
Use mint if you don’t want to spend 10 hours to install arch
Fair enough.
Use mint it’s a good one for windows refugees
The Installation is not that much slower. Takes around 10min
All distro is good with thiccpad
As a seasoned Linux user, I can't recommend fedora enough, make sure you use a spin though, to avoid gnome, and don't use an atomic desktop
Some magic words you saying, mister. I will try to figure these things out as they come, thanks for advise :)

Gnome is the most stable DE out there.
I feel exactly the opposite about KDE and GNOME. I guess that's why we have both
Ah fallafel player!!

I'm part-time evil too :^) Got it, my biggest enemy is the fingerprint module.

Welcome aboard
Thanks :^)
How much was it?
6500 UAH (~150 usd) my local average price on this model starts from 8000 uah (~200 usd), really good condition, 1080p but sadly it's i5-8250u.
Very honest price. If you think of it, it's less than a smartphone.
Linux mint.
Ubuntu because if you Google some issues there will be plenty of answers.
Don’t you mean our community 😊

Do not let windows or lenovo vantage update ur bios.
is lenovo vantage ok for regular driver and windows updates?

Is it bad? Yet not updated bios but installed some intel firmware and driver updates (so far so good) am i cooked?

I have thinkpad T450 8 drr3 I5 5thU And I use Windows 10 as general system And I use Kali Linux in Virtua box
nice machine 👌🏻
Fedora power user here (20+ years experience with Linux, dev and engineering work) and gnome is most definitely power user friendly
haha, welcome, $20
I installed mint on one of mine. Touchscreen worked by default. Managed to make the fingerprint reader to work as well. Go for whatever works for you.
Thanks, i'll look up for mint too!
