I’m cackling at how many times this was repeated here lmao

Latter_Lie7683

What book are you on?

shinycozytwistedglam

The books strongly imply (and eventually confirm?) that Arobynn is originally from Terrasen. Aelin notes several times early in Queen of Shadows that Arobynn is wearing dark green, the color of Terrasen, which makes her blood boil. He makes a point of associating himself with his home country, at least when Aelin is around. Non-spoiler: you learn eventually that he owned some kind of country house in Terrasen, which is why he was in the area when the royal family was killed.

JustabitofaBookworm

Wait, I read this whole series and had no idea he was from Terrasen, but it doesn’t make sense because wasn’t everyone that lived in Terrasen fae, and Arobynn wasn’t? He also taught Aelin to hate where she came from and made her afraid of her heritage. I’m confused why he would do that if he was from Terrasen too.

shinycozytwistedglam

Not everyone from Terrasen was Fae. Aelin’s parents were effectively human, only distantly descended from Mab and Brannon. Aedion is demi-Fae because Gavriel is his father. Aelin was surprised by the Fae culture at Mistward; her parents’ court was not full of aggressive Fae baring their teeth. After magic disappeared and the royal family were killed, any remaining Fae disappeared. But there were still people—humans—living in Terrasen. The Bane is an army of humans, not Fae, though many of them probably have Fae ancestors.

JustabitofaBookworm

Oh right but I distinctly remember that Aelin was half fae. Wasn’t her father was human and her mother was fae? That’s why she had a human form and fae form.

shinycozytwistedglam

Aelin’s mother (and her sister, Aedion’s mother) were Ashryvers, and that family is descended from Queen Mab. But neither of those women would qualify as Fae or even demi-Fae necessarily. They didn’t have magic, they couldn't shift forms, they didn’t have extended lifespans. Maeve was all up in their business for her own reasons. But Aelin’s mom wasn’t Fae like the people who live in Doranelle. She lived at Mistward for awhile and worked in the kitchens like Aelin did. I always assumed Aelin’s animal form was human because her parents were effectively human.

JustabitofaBookworm

I'm sorry, but I think there might be a misunderstanding here. Aelin's mother was descended from Maeve and Mab, and Aelin had fire powers and always had pointed ears in her fae form until magic was wiped away, leaving her stuck in her human form. Her mom was definitely fae. I recall Maeve mentioning something about Aelin being a half-breed because of her parents. I believe her dad was human, and her mother was fae. If her mom wasn’t fae, then how did she become fae? It just doesn’t make sense.

shinycozytwistedglam

The blood purity nuts in Doranelle would not have considered Evalin Ashryver Fae, because she wasn’t pure Fae. She had water magic but no animal form. She would’ve been considered a halfbreed herself.

JustabitofaBookworm

Ok I looked it up her mother wasn’t human. She was demifae. Google: Yes, Aelin Ashryver Galathynius's mother, Evalin Ashryver Galathynius, is demi-fae. Aelin is often referred to as a "half breed" in the Throne of Glass series, and has a full Fae form that she can shift into. Aelin's Fae ancestry comes from prior generations, and her human form is her animal form. Google: Aelin is the latter type of Demi-Fae: (is of fae descent, mother was Demi fae of fae descent and her father was a human of very distant fae descent). She has: the secondary form (her human form is her animal form), Magic and a mate.

shinycozytwistedglam

Yea I don’t disagree. But Maeve & the Fae of Doranelle make a big deal about the difference between full Fae and everyone else. In terms of blood percentage Aelin’s mother was less Fae than Aedion is. We can assume that like Aedion, Evelin had human ears & teeth (but also magic). She’s enough Fae that her childbirth was difficult & nearly killed her. She spent time at Mistward as a young woman but not Doranelle as far as we know. As readers we’re asked to believe that traits which were diluted/recessive in Aelin’s parents have combined into something much more powerful in her. To make it more convincing we get a hand-wave from Maeve about how she thought the bloodlines were “too volatile” to combine. Fae genetics seem to behave in odd & unpredictable ways. Lorcan may be less Fae than Aedion, for example. But Aedion looks human while Lorcan doesn’t.

socialbookworm7

You'll learn more about how he came to rescue her but I'm pretty sure it was mentioned earlier in the series that he was already living in Terrasen at the time.

OppositeZestyclose58

Yes

branizoid

I’m mid series. Trying to think the best of a character’s actions.. did he train her to be an assassin so she would be able to protect herself?

Competitive-Box321

Empire of Storms!

harshtune

im reading it for the first time too and ive read till hof and for some reason i think he was the one who killed aelin's parents and marion? maybe not her parents but just marion? (i forgot). it doesn't make sense at all to me tbh but for me this seemed like the most possible thing ykwim? it probably sounds very stupid but while i was reading hof, this was the first thing that came to my mind 😭 (i am most likely very, very wrong lol-)

SalsaSnob92

I’m starting the tandem read of EoS / ToD and I just always thought it was suspicious that Arobynn the king of assassins just happened to be in terrrasen when the royal family was assassinated and just *happened* to be at the right place at the right time. There’s always a hidden agenda with Arobynn and I find it odd that he just coincidentally was there. It seems like to me that he would have a role in the royal family’s assassination.
