Its genuinly a hard call by this pics.
If thats the rim protector, chances are you good, but i cant understand if it goes deeper than it.
Edit: Simple test, if the deeper part is above/same level as the rim, you are good to go.(Wich it seems)
If its bellow, use some NOT sharp object to try to feel lumps/cords. If you do feel them, its a nono.
Cant understand the certainty of people around here, almost like they are either expecting ultra performance conditions or are the ones selling the tires.
This is actually the best answer, there’s no structural damage to that tire at all, the damage you have is exactly what that layer of rubber is for, to protect the important part. Now that it’s not there you should keep an eye on it since it’s more vulnerable now, but you’re fine.
Like I said. Stay away from cars. It’s perfectly fine to drive on. Just because it “looks” bad doesn’t mean it actually is. It’s still the outer rubber. It didn’t go past the sidewall. So please don’t spread misinformation
I had a blow out once doing 60 mph and my car immediately out of nowhere veered hard into the right lane. If i wasnt paying attention and instantly corrected i would have wrecked.
Buy two new tires one each side so they match…yes you probably can go around town if needed but I certainly would not drive any distance at all if I can avoid it. That missing chunk will significantly reduce the strength n safety of that tire so it will fail sooner rather than later
Immediately replace it. Any significant sidewall damage and your tyre is toast. That’s a weak spot that could lead to a fatal blowout especially if it weakens while driving.
I would never suggest someone do something less than safe. Best practice is always when in doubt, replace
That being said, I was once a broke kid who could barely afford gas, let alone tires. I did this to one of my tires once and the tire outlived the car itself. No cords showing, you should be ok. I wouldn’t trust it to eat another curb shot though.
Depends how much you value your life. That’s a big chunk and you probably have a millimeter of tire left before you hit cord. One more hit and it’s done for
Correct assessment. You live and others, of course people will always think of themselves first before anyone else. The solution to this is people need to pay attention and stop parking so damn close to the curbs. Walk around any parking lot and there are people who park over the concrete parking curb stop block/curb, scraping their front bumper on/over it, tires all pressed against the side curb… it damages their rims and tires and sometimes the rim is so damaged that tires cannot be put them on them. Hell, some customers complain that their tires leak air and why? Ohh because their rims are so deeply damaged.
I think that’s the key. Unless OP comes up with a better strategy for parallel parking, she’ll be spending more to replace tires missing chunks of sidewall.
I would definitely get it changed just for the simple fact that if you hit something else in that spot you could have some catastrophic failure of that tire
Idk if you really need to,imo it doesn't look deep enough to be a concern. But if you take it to Les Schwab they'll check it for free, depending on what state you live in,idk if you have Les Schwab in your area.
I would change that in a heart beat. There is no way i would drive a tire like that, it has lost a big chuck of its protection. You are waiting for a disaster to happen. Your life is more valuable than $200 tire.
Everyone making jokes but zero serious answers smh
Anyways no cords are showing, tire is fine. Its not the structural part of the tire that’s been compromised, You can just use rubber cement to glue that piece back on the tire since cutting it off prob not the best idea.
The side wall is the thickest part of the tire because that is where all the pressure goes when weight loaded and it's not reinforced because in needs to flex. It's also where tire "blow outs". Any damage to sidewall of tire should be immediately replaced.
Superglue 😜
Honestly though…. Replace it as soon as you can afford it. Meanwhile make sure you rotate the tire to the rear of the vehicle. Sidewall blow outs on a front tire are no fun. It’s not like a leak down. Just think of worse case scenario and let that be your guide 😉
I had a tire like this and was told by Toyota and Discount Tire that the tire is thick in certain spots but it doesn't diminish the integrity of the tire there. That it's meant to absorb blows like that. That's what I was told tho🤷🏽♀️ you might get told differently.
Ma'am get a new tire asap there is a flaw in the one pictured, ignore all comments saying your good. And avoid any potholes anything that puts pressure on the tire it can pop exactly in that weak spot
I would probably change the tire out because I hate changing tires on the side of a busy freeway... And of course the tire will go at the worst time possible like when you have to be somewhere and you're already 10 minutes late...
Don't listen to anyone on here. That's damage. Go get it changed out. Your tire shouldn't have no damage at all. That's unsafe for you and others on the road
You should at the absolute minimum take them to a tire shop and get them looked at. It’s better to be safe than you sitting on the side of the road in a crumpled up car barely able to breathe because you took a chance on a tire that was SOL.
That is interesting. Most of the warrantees I’ve seen cover workmanship and materials, which clearly isn’t the case here. Or, a Road Hazard warranty, which I didn’t think would cover curbing.
I bought a car few years ago, and it came with a coverage that even if I curbed a wheel or tire, it’ll get replaced. No cost. Luckily I haven’t had the need to use it
If there is no bubble the chords didn’t rip and it is cosmetic. Rubber cement can glue it back on. If there’s a bubble or one forms it’s not just cosmetic and should be replaced.
Hear me out instead of buying a nee one just get some gorilla glue load it up and stick it back on😂 instead of spending a whole other 100-300 for a new tire
Cords visable? No? Safe to use.
Yes? Replace.
Some people need to do some research on tyre construction. Rubber has never been a structural part of any pneumatic system. It's always used with reinforcement or as protection.
In the case of a tyre it's to protect the structural component, the carcass.
Without structural reinforcement a tyre would be nothing more than an inner tube, it'll have no strength and would be unsuitable for use as a tyre.
It depends on what kind of car this is. If it's a relatively heavy car/crossover/SUV you may consider your safety over a hundred bucks. The sidewall flexes when your vehicle is in motion, so missing a chunk of the rubber wall compromise the strength of that sidewall. So, add in speed, road condition, this tire may blow out without any warning and the driver plus occupants will suffer the consequent. A used replacement tire in good condition, with the same tread depth, is a better option than keep on driving on something like this.
On my car I see superficial damage and would not replace it. It’s not into the structural component of the tire. To a customer I would advise replacing it because the blow that caused the chunk may have caused damage to the cords underneath that we cannot see.
Don't just replace this tire OP. If it's 2 wheel drive, also replace the tire on the other side. If it's all-wheel drive? (here come the downvotes) replace all 4.
Technically it has no nylon sidewall cords showing... it'd be okay for 35 mph and below on surface streets **only**... BUT one mishap with a pothole or another curb and it's done for.
Personally, for some low speed short stuff... I'd use some E6000 (small tube is a <$5 in Wally 🤬 World craft section) and adhere it back in place.
**LOW SPEED SHORT TRIPS ONLY AND NO HIGHWAYS**
Its genuinly a hard call by this pics. If thats the rim protector, chances are you good, but i cant understand if it goes deeper than it. Corporate propaganda works well, it seems.
there is a chunk of her sidewalk missing sir
Why are you so Cautious?
Why are you so Curious?
Why are you so Silent?
Stop keeping secrets from us. (Sorry I don’t have a clever name)
Why are you so XL? Go down a size or two.
Why are you so for.... secretive?
There's a chunk of her rimstrip protector missing, no way to tell by this pic if it actually reaches sidewall "levels".
Yea! just glue it back on if it passes that test OP.
No exposed nylon, no sidewall separation means youre fine. Less reinforcement means you should visually inspect it more often.
This is actually the best answer, there’s no structural damage to that tire at all, the damage you have is exactly what that layer of rubber is for, to protect the important part. Now that it’s not there you should keep an eye on it since it’s more vulnerable now, but you’re fine.
Best answer so far...
This ⬆️
You can see the sidewall belts through the scrape. This tire is done.
Please never give vehicle advice ever again
Sorry dude. You don't drive on a tire with the sidewall plys showing.
Like I said. Stay away from cars. It’s perfectly fine to drive on. Just because it “looks” bad doesn’t mean it actually is. It’s still the outer rubber. It didn’t go past the sidewall. So please don’t spread misinformation
You can literally see the outside edge of the sidewall plies. That is not cosmetic damage.
Get some high quality instant glue and you are good for additional 20,000 miles
30,000
40,000?
50,000?
Penis?
Why should you even ask? Of course you should
If it’s a question of safety, just replace it
Sketchy to drive with but you may still be able to drive it until you can replace it. Don’t ignore it though, it will wear down more over time.
You need someone to tell you?
Yes
Immediately.
I would change it
I think zoomed in I see a sliver of cord, either way it should be replaced imo.
Genuinely yes driving it any further can get you killed bro 😭
I had a blow out once doing 60 mph and my car immediately out of nowhere veered hard into the right lane. If i wasnt paying attention and instantly corrected i would have wrecked.
sounds so scary 😨😨
Is your fuel economy relevant?
hah sorry i meant to type mph
The tyre is likely illegal if you get stopped by police or if you have an accident, the insurance could be invalid.
Buy two new tires one each side so they match…yes you probably can go around town if needed but I certainly would not drive any distance at all if I can avoid it. That missing chunk will significantly reduce the strength n safety of that tire so it will fail sooner rather than later
Yes.
Yes change it. Sidewall has weakened
if you wanna live, yeah 😭
Better safe than sorry.
Immediately replace it. Any significant sidewall damage and your tyre is toast. That’s a weak spot that could lead to a fatal blowout especially if it weakens while driving.
Yes don’t drive on it
I would never suggest someone do something less than safe. Best practice is always when in doubt, replace That being said, I was once a broke kid who could barely afford gas, let alone tires. I did this to one of my tires once and the tire outlived the car itself. No cords showing, you should be ok. I wouldn’t trust it to eat another curb shot though.
Oh course you should you could have a accident
Yes the weakest part of a tire is the sidewall
Yes
You have exposed sidewall cords, change it. Damage to those cords can lead to a sidewall blowout.
Depends how much you value your life. That’s a big chunk and you probably have a millimeter of tire left before you hit cord. One more hit and it’s done for
Not even just your life, but literally everyone else around you when that thing blows. Please, OP, replace that tire ASAP
Wtf is a rim
You serious
No, sadly she doesn’t.
Nah, it's good for 2 more curb hits!
I think that’s the key. Unless OP comes up with a better strategy for parallel parking, she’ll be spending more to replace tires missing chunks of sidewall.
Still not use to this big ass suv yet used to having small cars lol
No, based on the picture I’d suggest letting the professionals change your tire instead.
Damn, those are some sharp-ass nails! But, no, I wouldn’t drive on that faster than 20mph to get to the tire shop
Get off that phone guh!! 😂
😂
Tsk tsk 😅
Pretty sure cord is showing already so yeah change that asap and I wouldn’t drive on it personally. Put a spare on or get a mobile tyre fitter out.
The cords arent showing yet! That bad boys got 5 to 10 miles left on him for sure!
Need to tell me where TF you get that much certainty when thats the rim protector
[удалено]
This^ this one of the WRONG ANSWERs and people from Reddit you don’t listen to. Change your tire
Well, replace this tire. You may not buy all 4.
Yes
Subaru?
Ford
Yes
-500 miles probably.
Yes
Ooo thats mean chunck! Tire R&R is in order
I would definitely get it changed just for the simple fact that if you hit something else in that spot you could have some catastrophic failure of that tire
at least use pasties
If you need to save money buy a use tire and that way it's not to much and you can find a good deal p 2 or 4 new rubber circles
No. You should have a professional change your tire, check the alignment and brake pads.
Idk if you really need to,imo it doesn't look deep enough to be a concern. But if you take it to Les Schwab they'll check it for free, depending on what state you live in,idk if you have Les Schwab in your area.
I like your nails 💅
Tire is good to go. Just glue it back for the esthetics!!!
I will replace it if I were you, don’t risk your life.
Replace it. Unless you want to risk a blowout. The sidewalls support nearly all the pressure from the weight of a car.
I would change that in a heart beat. There is no way i would drive a tire like that, it has lost a big chuck of its protection. You are waiting for a disaster to happen. Your life is more valuable than $200 tire.
Everyone making jokes but zero serious answers smh Anyways no cords are showing, tire is fine. Its not the structural part of the tire that’s been compromised, You can just use rubber cement to glue that piece back on the tire since cutting it off prob not the best idea.
Made In Brazil :)
Yes! 100%!!! Damage to the wall (even if repaired) can increase the risk of the tire blowing out. Not worth getting into an accident.
Yes you should if you hit a pothole hard enough your tire will blow and I rather be safe then be sorry
No, go ahead and continue to risk your own life and everyone else’s.
The side wall is the thickest part of the tire because that is where all the pressure goes when weight loaded and it's not reinforced because in needs to flex. It's also where tire "blow outs". Any damage to sidewall of tire should be immediately replaced.
If your cardiologist showed you a proportional gouge in your left ventricle….
I would just to be safe
Super glue it back on, should be fine.
Superglue 😜 Honestly though…. Replace it as soon as you can afford it. Meanwhile make sure you rotate the tire to the rear of the vehicle. Sidewall blow outs on a front tire are no fun. It’s not like a leak down. Just think of worse case scenario and let that be your guide 😉

Yes!

Yes
If you can’t see metal then you’re good
I would probably change the tire out because I hate changing tires on the side of a busy freeway... And of course the tire will go at the worst time possible like when you have to be somewhere and you're already 10 minutes late...
Yea go to your closest southern tire mart
Ok. So no white threads showing. So thats a plus.
Ya think?🧐
Nope!! Gorilla Glue!! You’re good to go!!
No!!!! I promise you’re good. Mine has been like that for two years now.
Change it. Sidewall isn't all that thick. I'd say you got about .05 a millimeter to the cord. 1 hard bump and that tire is gonna blow.
replace if it's awd i am sorry
Yes, the tire needs to be replaced with that kind of damage.
Don't listen to anyone on here. That's damage. Go get it changed out. Your tire shouldn't have no damage at all. That's unsafe for you and others on the road
Yes ,unless you are wanting to end your life and the life of others
You have a chunk missing in the weakest part of the tire. Glue will fix it temporarily, but id get new tires ASAP.
You should at the absolute minimum take them to a tire shop and get them looked at. It’s better to be safe than you sitting on the side of the road in a crumpled up car barely able to breathe because you took a chance on a tire that was SOL.
If you wanna live a little longer yes. If you wanna save some money and live on the edge, then no
It's time to respond to these stupid effing questions in kind: No, it's fine. Drive as fast as you can as far as you can. Good luck.
Yes, asap!
Some of you in this thread need to stop giving advice. No cords are showing. It’s additional protective rubber. You’re fine to drive on it
PLEASE tell me people aren’t actually dumb enough to think this is safe to drive on
Nah just glue it back on
It's fine. Don't worry about it.
Yes, change it straightaway and don’t drive on it!

You can just about see them in the first picture...
Looks like those are run flats. You might have a warranty on them if those were replaced in the past year
How could this possibly be waranteeable?
Most dealerships or certain tire companies offer a warranty. Regardless of the damage.
No cost. Luckily I haven’t had the need to use it
Nope, good for another 10,000
I had a sidewall puncture and Krazy glue held it together another 20,000 miles. Can't hurt to try it
[удалено]
Legit
No if it rides fine still you are ok! Just keep your eye on it if it starts to warp more then yes change it but you should be fine.
If there is no bubble the chords didn’t rip and it is cosmetic. Rubber cement can glue it back on. If there’s a bubble or one forms it’s not just cosmetic and should be replaced.
Get some super glue
No cord, no replace.
Hear me out instead of buying a nee one just get some gorilla glue load it up and stick it back on😂 instead of spending a whole other 100-300 for a new tire
I had a Michelin tire like that I hit a curb and it outlasted the 50k warranty. Not saying yours is the same but that was my experience
Nah this is nothing. Completely fine keep carrying, i’ve seen much worse and passed MOT
I keep getting comments like this then the complete opposite response Reddit has confused me even more 😭
Nah throw some duck tape on it
Cement glue and you're good for another 2 miles
Vulcanized rubber disc patch
Yes and get 4 new ones
Naw, get some duct tape
Cords visable? No? Safe to use. Yes? Replace. Some people need to do some research on tyre construction. Rubber has never been a structural part of any pneumatic system. Without structural reinforcement a tyre would be nothing more than an inner tube, it'll have no strength and would be unsuitable for use as a tyre.
Gorilla glue the chunk back in.
The tire is just shedding it's top coat due to the summer heat. I myself would change it for peace of mind.
I hit a curve
It depends on what kind of car this is. If it's a relatively heavy car/crossover/SUV you may consider your safety over a hundred bucks. The sidewall flexes when your vehicle is in motion, so missing a chunk of the rubber wall compromise the strength of that sidewall. I wonder if this negatively affects aero enough to be noticeable

Don't just replace this tire OP. If it's 2 wheel drive, also replace the tire on the other side. If it's all-wheel drive? (here come the downvotes) replace all 4.
Very much so. This is unsafe to drive. Have it towed.
This tire has at least 25K left!
Whats the date on this tire? Likely expired well before this happened. Good tread life does not mean safe tire. All tires have expiration dates.
Not expired just got the car like 6 months ago with new tires n I already messed up doing this
Technically it has no nylon sidewall cords showing... it'd be okay for 35 mph and below on surface streets **only**... BUT one mishap with a pothole or another curb and it's done for.
