Would you not need a rim with it?
I had a flat and I was furious my $30,000 2024 Camry has a fucking shit spare tire. Toyota claims to move upmarket, but the car has been a disappointment. I wish I had bought a low mileage 2008-2012.
I have a car that was valued at £45k new in 2020, AWD system which is meant to have less than 3% difference between the wheel diameter to prevent damage.
They provided it with a spare that has 4" less than the wheels on the car which is over 20% difference.
Manufacturers couldn't give a shit.
This is true. I would keep it, but just make sure to look it over before throwing it back on. Maybe even just toss it if doesn't get used within 3 or 4 years.
I want a full side spare in my car. But the donut size is so much smaller than the full size tire. i cant really do that without sacrificing a ton of trunk space
Gluing it is probably a good idea, otherwise if something hits that part again there will just be a very thin layer before getting inside the tire.
Maybe rubber cement is better not sure what I would use.
On the off chance you ever get to use this information: vulcanising cement is what you should use, super glue is basically just plastic and solvents it can mess up your tyre and bleed in and won’t expand or stretch with the other rubber around it. you can also scrape it off tyre bacon repair kits.
>You don't go and amputate your leg when you scrape your knee.
Exactly. Euthanasia is the answer!
^(But in all seriousness, it's fine. Rim protector; extra thick rubber in that area, no cords.)
If you get in a crash, the insurance company WILL look at your tires…. That means if you have compromised/damaged/worn tires, they may cite that as a potential cause, which may lead to you having to pay for it..
Yes. I had an ear abscess that I wanted the ENT to operate on. He refused, gave me some antibiotics and said let's wait and see if it resolves itself. It did, I trusted him after that. I had another ENT who insisted upon operating on my ear--while on the operating table, he couldn't find what he wanted to cut out, so he just cut somewhere else, left the swelled up abscess there. I never went to him again, in fact, should have sued him.
In short, when the expert has financial incentive to recommend doing something but does not, trust him.
Well, don't listen to experts, worry about it and go buy an entire set of tires! Honestly that's a thin sliver of rubber, go get yourself some gorilla Glue and plaster it back!
https://mechanicbase.com/tires/sidewall-tire-damage/
here you go op, little something for you to read. Read all the way through, not just the first 3 words though, particaulrily where it details what constitutes tire damage. That tire is still fine, as long as the cord/ply isn't exposed. Think about it like this, you wouldn't replace a whole wall if your drywall got scratched. The underlying structure, the cords that give the tire it's strength are still in tact. I would check it regularly for any signs of bulging or sudden pressure loss though.
That's a good idea. I just wouldn't want that flap to spin with the tire possibly incrementally tearing itt further. My idea was to clip it off..but rubber cement would work.
The tire looks safe to drive, not safe to hit again, that being said it kinda looks like you about shaved off the DOT number...and that brings up a policy question imma have to ask my boss now so thanks for that
I usually get really an*l retentive about stuff like that but everybody's right. The cords are not exposed, you only took a chunk out of the rubber. I would save it as a full size spare or something if you really want to replace it.
I would get some e6000 and make sure that it's glued down so that it's at least protecting that spot.
That's absolutely hideous. What did you do back into a fucking straight razor?
Well, it's their job to sell you tyres. That's the rim protector and it doesn't seem like any cords are visible so, the rim protector did as good of a job as it could. Some vulcanizing glue should be able to fix that. It might be worth getting your wheel rebalanced. There's a decent chunk of metal missing there.
He still has the regular sidewall and cords to go through underneath that though, with the rim taking more of the brunt of the impact without the rim protector. Would probably still be fine.
Here's what l recommend: Replace tire, get a front end alignment and get the rim repaired. Probably looking at $400 depending on the tire price. Damage control now, prevents big damage and more money spent to replace or repair sooner rather than later.
I’d take a razor cut off the flap dig those jagged pieces of aluminum that will damage the tire further out of there and roll on it tires are way to expensive to 86 for a flesh wound btw 15 year tire service veteran here
He still has the regular sidewall and cords to go through underneath that though, with the rim taking more of the brunt of the impact without the rim protector. Would probably still be fine.
It’s fine but not great looking. Nothing structural was damaged. Are the tires new? I ask because you may be able to just replace that one and be fine. If they’re over 5000 miles old (maybe 10) then you’re gonna need to replace all 4 and I don’t think that it’s worth replacing all 4 for that.
looks ok to be honest, crazy glue that piece back on ! lol
you can always keep as spare if you get a new one, i would as i dont like taking chances on road .
It's fine.
Get a small tube of E6000 epoxy adhesive, "glue" it down, let sit for 24hrs... move on with your day.
Funny you took it to a tire shop, who's main purpose is to sell you a service or product, THEY said it was fine...
And what's up with all you folks curbing the s*** out of your wheels?
I can't believe a tire shop told u that was ok, the tire is compromised. Would u rather replace the tire or be responsible for damage cause by a blowout
Yeah that is fine. You certainly have a good tire shop though with them being honest on that.
That is part of the rim protector and there is extra thick rubber there to protect the rim against damage, and are not needed for safety.
Sidewall damage=trashed tire; never, ever trust a shop that says that’s fine to drive on. And if you have to… get that shit in writing. That way, if/when it blows out and you gotta deal with the consequences, you can take that shop to court.
There’s no true reason to replace it. Absolutely no part of the structure of the tire is ether damaged or exposed.
No, theres no blowout risk as the cords inside the tire are what prevents that and its not even exposed
Bro the tire shop could have said this needs to be replaced and you would have replaced it and they would have made a buck off you… but they didn’t? And yet you don’t trust them? Come on man lol
The tire is fine. If I was talking to someone who was worried I would tell them if you don't hit curbs a lot stay with the tire and if you curbs probably replace it
Are you talking about the tire or your driving? Because you're driving looks to be very expensive and not fine at all. You should also get your alignment checked.
Former technician here. If it doesn't go down to the polyester plies, it's fine. That part of the rubber is there to protect the structure of the sidewall, not to _be_ the structure of the sidewall. It did its job.
Just thinking, regarding the rim itself.
Maybe it'd be a good idea to Dremel or lightly grind down or file down the sharp parts, or smooth out the whole divot, the idea being to remove any stress risers?
No experience with auto wheels, but stress risers are a concern on certain make, brand, or design of bicycle crankset spiders. Some are prone to stress risers between the individual arms, usually made of aluminum.
Same concern with certain aluminum handlebars and stems.
Really not sure, though, if there is a cross application or concern between automobile wheels and bike components. I just thought it was worth mentioning.
See here, what ya needa do is go an grab yourself summa dat flex paste and then run down to the dolla sto, you also gonna wana go an get yous a spatula. Now see you take dem der spatula and you take a big old dip outta that flex paste. Slap that sunna gun right on the ol roughed up area, use a little pressure to pat that flap back down nice and cozy like yuh momma tucked you in when yous was little. grab yous a wet cloth and wipe off the excess, tire won't even know it happen.
Maybe there's some kind of rubber adhesive to repair that? Depends how thick that side wall is though, if it's kinda thin under that gouge I wouldn't trust it but I'm not sure how thin or thick that is
That's hideous, but I don't see any exposed cords.
This tyre has a rim protector. There is 1cm of rubber aroudn...
Rim protector ain't protectin
Looks like op needs a rim job
Giggity
🤣
Can I be OP?
I can provide
Tire still tireing so it's working
Honest question are there chords on a sidewall? I thought they only put cords around the tread part?
Technically yes but if you happen to hit it again in the same spot you’re done
Yeah I'm gonna get it replaced anyway, Just wanted to know if it was OK in the meantime.
If you're solid on replacing it, I would at least keep it as a full-size spare. The tire is technically safe to drive on.
Would you not need a rim with it? I had a flat and I was furious my $30,000 2024 Camry has a fucking shit spare tire. Toyota claims to move upmarket, but the car has been a disappointment. I wish I had bought a low mileage 2008-2012.

At least there was a spare provided https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/tires/some-newer-cars-are-missing-a-spare-tire-a9928775934/
Technically safe; the best kind of safe.
My favorite kind!
Yea but with that much being exposed if it's not stored well it could have issues before long
This is true. I would keep it, but just make sure to look it over before throwing it back on. Maybe even just toss it if doesn't get used within 3 or 4 years.
this is a great idea i would have never thought of myself and i am going to keep it in mind for specific situations like this
I want a full side spare in my car. But the donut size is so much smaller than the full size tire. i cant really do that without sacrificing a ton of trunk space
I came to say this lol
Excellent call!
Just get some rubber cement. Re-Adhere that slice. Once you do so, it'll be effectively new.
I would buy another wheel too while you are at it and keep that one there for a spare.
It’s just not worth risking it with tyres like that. I’d also consider getting your alignment done as well, that’s a good chunk out of your alloy!
Ok for short time but not a long time…..
Not just done, but fucked. 🤣
Nuffin some super glue won’t fix
Gluing it is probably a good idea, otherwise if something hits that part again there will just be a very thin layer before getting inside the tire. Maybe rubber cement is better not sure what I would use.
Like 3M PR100 or similar super glue
Gorilla glue and some paper will patch that up in no time.
No Jb weld fans in this sub.
On the off chance you ever get to use this information: vulcanising cement is what you should use, super glue is basically just plastic and solvents it can mess up your tyre and bleed in and won’t expand or stretch with the other rubber around it. you can also scrape it off tyre bacon repair kits.
RC guys use CA, basically super glue, and some of them go 100mph stock and others are going over 200mph. Actual mph, not “scale speeds”
This is the tire equivalent to a scraped knee. It's fine. It's purely cosmetic. You don't go and amputate your leg when you scrape your knee.
r/angryupvote
🤣
>You don't go and amputate your leg when you scrape your knee. Exactly. Euthanasia is the answer! ^(But in all seriousness, it's fine. Rim protector; extra thick rubber in that area, no cords.)
If you get in a crash, the insurance company WILL look at your tires…. That means if you have compromised/damaged/worn tires, they may cite that as a potential cause, which may lead to you having to pay for it..
Cement back the flap. No wires showing.
Theoretically, no cords no problem!
Crazy you don’t trust a tire shop saying you don’t need to spend money
Waste of money to replaceimo unless you tow with it. I’d glue that puppy back and keep it moving
Well, don't listen to experts, worry about it and go buy an entire set of tires! Honestly that's a thin sliver of rubber, go get yourself some gorilla Glue and plaster it back!

The damn thing has clipped curbs lightly on me too. Tire is safe to drive but watch it. You can cut that piece sticking out.
Good luck cutting vulcanized rubber
Yeah... Glue it back on instead
That's a good idea. I just wouldn't want that flap to spin with the tire possibly incrementally tearing itt further. My idea was to clip it off..but rubber cement would work.
The tire looks safe to drive, not safe to hit again, that being said it kinda looks like you about shaved off the DOT number...and that brings up a policy question imma have to ask my boss now so thanks for that
😂😂
I’ve done track days with a tire sliced like this…it’s fine. Seriously.
You tore up the rim protector and the rim a bit. Most tires now have that built in. Used to look odd but now it's normal.
Its fine, no exposed cords. Thats in the rim protector and thats why its thick... didn't protect the rim though :(
No exposed cords mean it's fine. Cement the flap back on and keep rolling.
Tire is fine. Just glue it back. That rim got pretty fucked though. Might want to see if its bent or out of alignment/balance now.
It's fine
It’s fine.
Glue it
Shop is right. It’s fine
I usually get really an*l retentive about stuff like that but everybody's right. The cords are not exposed, you only took a chunk out of the rubber. I would save it as a full size spare or something if you really want to replace it.
As long as you didnt expose the chords
Look man, i have no fucking clue about it, but if a shop that changes wheels for money tells you you dont have to change it, i’d say ur good to go.
You are okay
I don't see any exposed steel. Maybe rubber cement that back in place so you don't make it worse
Funny that the one tire on this sub that can be saved, the owner is insistent on replacing it lol.
“I spoke to the professionals they said I’m good, I don’t believe them even tho they coulda charged me money…"
Technically that's fine and they're right. I know it definitely looks ugly, so glue it back in place like another person mentioned. Good as new!
Glue it back in with rubber cement don’t stress it
It’s fine but holy shit someone blasted that wheel. I guarantee the wheel is bent.
I would get some e6000 and make sure that it's glued down so that it's at least protecting that spot. That's absolutely hideous. What did you do back into a fucking straight razor?
Your the driver, if your uncomfortable then spend the money and get it replaced , easy, I accept bitcoin
That poor rim though
I'm not even sure the curb was fine.
Tires fine. For all you tire nuts out there, it looks like the curb tried to wipe that tires identity.
You went to a tire shop. The place that *wants* to sell you tires said it was fine......................
That’s just cosmetic, you should be fine
It’s fine
Well, it's their job to sell you tyres. That's the rim protector and it doesn't seem like any cords are visible so, the rim protector did as good of a job as it could. Some vulcanizing glue should be able to fix that. It might be worth getting your wheel rebalanced. There's a decent chunk of metal missing there.
I would go to a second tire shop for their opinion.
Looks cosmetic. No exposed cords, no bulge indicating broken cords. The industry term is 'ugly spot.'
Good till you get a new one forsure
Tire shop
So you drove to a tire shop and they said it was fine but you decided to come to reddit for a second opinion instead of a different shop?
Technically safe but don't hit it again there
He still has the regular sidewall and cords to go through underneath that though, with the rim taking more of the brunt of the impact without the rim protector. Would probably still be fine.
Glue it, and use it as a full sized spare.
Here's what l recommend: Replace tire, get a front end alignment and get the rim repaired. Probably looking at $400 depending on the tire price. Damage control now, prevents big damage and more money spent to replace or repair sooner rather than later.
You've got at least 73 rotations before it's a problem
You need to do something about the wheel. It may be hard to balance with that big scrape.
I’d take a razor cut off the flap dig those jagged pieces of aluminum that will damage the tire further out of there and roll on it tires are way to expensive to 86 for a flesh wound btw 15 year tire service veteran here
Cut the extra off and drive it
Hawk tuah!
Just got my tires replaced, but one of them had a huge chunk taken out like this!! What caused this???
It's safe enough, tho it's definitely compromised. It can't take another hit in the same spot, that's for sure.
He still has the regular sidewall and cords to go through underneath that though, with the rim taking more of the brunt of the impact without the rim protector. Would probably still be fine.
The "it" I referred to is the wheel/tire assembly as a whole. Another hit in the same spot could crack or bend the rim even if the tire doesn't fail.
Are thouse BF Goodrich G Force or Bridestone Potenza?
“You should see the curb” 😂
It’s fine but not great looking. Nothing structural was damaged. Are the tires new? I ask because you may be able to just replace that one and be fine. If they’re over 5000 miles old (maybe 10) then you’re gonna need to replace all 4 and I don’t think that it’s worth replacing all 4 for that.
That rim though I’d get fixed for sure lol
Should be fine, if you want just swap the wheel to the rear
You should be fine. I had one and it lasted until the tires were almost bald.
looks ok to be honest, crazy glue that piece back on ! lol you can always keep as spare if you get a new one, i would as i dont like taking chances on road .
That section of tire is extra thick for this reason. Unless you really push your tires *that* hard, you’re fine
Damn you got it good
Your fine… drive that shit I promise the thread will go before the tire pops because of that gash
Just fix it if you have the money, be a lot less costly then a accident or even your life
It's fine. Get a small tube of E6000 epoxy adhesive, "glue" it down, let sit for 24hrs... move on with your day. Funny you took it to a tire shop, who's main purpose is to sell you a service or product, THEY said it was fine... And what's up with all you folks curbing the s*** out of your wheels?
get some rubber cement at a bike shop, coat both sides, let dry and slap that back together
rip my skin off if i cheat daddy.
As long as it don't leak
Time to do top-speed runs. 🤡
I can't believe a tire shop told u that was ok, the tire is compromised. Would u rather replace the tire or be responsible for damage cause by a blowout
Just watch out for curbs in the future
That poor wheel and tire!
It’s like coloring. You are supposed to stay BETWEEN the lines.
Yeah that is fine. You certainly have a good tire shop though with them being honest on that. That is part of the rim protector and there is extra thick rubber there to protect the rim against damage, and are not needed for safety.
Fine to drive to a new tire shop
What’s not fine is the person driving that vehicle….
So buy a tire
Sidewall damage=trashed tire; never, ever trust a shop that says that’s fine to drive on. And if you have to… get that shit in writing. That way, if/when it blows out and you gotta deal with the consequences, you can take that shop to court.
You could also just glue that bit back down with some contact cement. It really did its job and it would do it again.
There’s no true reason to replace it. Absolutely no part of the structure of the tire is ether damaged or exposed. No, theres no blowout risk as the cords inside the tire are what prevents that and its not even exposed
Emm no.
Did you curb it against a cheese grater?
Ask insurance company just to be sure
It's fine for now but j wouldn't hit anything else with it it will blow then . But yeah for now your good
Replace it
Had this happen to me before (check my post history) and had to replace the tire eventually due to cords starting to show behind the flap
Roll the dice.
Bro the tire shop could have said this needs to be replaced and you would have replaced it and they would have made a buck off you… but they didn’t? And yet you don’t trust them? Come on man lol
No exposed cords, you’re probably okay. Little bit of runner cement, let it dry. Ta-da!
Put some rubber cement on it and send it
The tire is fine. If I was talking to someone who was worried I would tell them if you don't hit curbs a lot stay with the tire and if you curbs probably replace it
It's fine. If it gets hit there again it's obviously not gonna take it well
Get some crazy glue and you’ll be good to go…
Well the broken piece is still attached so you can just glue it back on...
Rubber cement for the win!
why not use some rubber cement and make it look nice...
Time for the Flexseal guy!
It's fine, it's just that it's easier to puncture there. You can stick it back with some rubberised glue and use it as a spare
If it’s not losing air, it’s fine.
That tire is fine. No cords or cables exposed or poking through.
You must have got that advice from someone at tires plus, who also can't diagnose a dead battery 🤣
Was the guy blind? A cracked sidewall is unsafe, let alone one with a chunk out it
Just glue it back with some gorilla glue or some shit. Make sure you do monitor it though
Asks the ones that do it for a job, doesn't believe them. I work in a tire shop, your good. No chords, unless it bulges your fine.
How about some Shoe Goo?
Flex seal and boom!
Tire shop said it was fine?! Bruh they could’ve made a good bit of cash right here….. be weary of that place….
huaktuah spit on that thang with some kinda flex seal or melt it shut or something jk i am picturing it flapping around on the highway
Tire shop is dum. You need a new one
That tire won't last long like that.
I would use some soapy water if it bubbles change it . My dad leaned me that
Yeah nah it's fine.
Smart... asking random stranger's opinions instead of taking the professional one. I mean did you think to go to another tire shop before asking here?
Sidewall damage is generally a NoGo for me.
Super glue it
Absolutely do not replace that tire waste of time and money
Are you talking about the tire or your driving? Because you're driving looks to be very expensive and not fine at all. You should also get your alignment checked.
Former technician here. If it doesn't go down to the polyester plies, it's fine. That part of the rubber is there to protect the structure of the sidewall, not to _be_ the structure of the sidewall. It did its job.
Buff that out.
A little rubber glue and you are fine.
til it pops right there
Torch it and stick it back together. I’d be more comfortable with that on a rear wheel than a front.
If it's not leaking then take a razor blade and cut the excess off
I've reached the bottom of reddit on this post
That rim is likely bent and unbalanced
I work at a rim repair shop i see this all the time.
Glue that
I’m shocked you went into a tire shop and they didn’t suggest 4 new tires
Did they also tell you your wheels need a new battery?
Go to a different tire shop.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072Q9DBB5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Super glue that down and you’ll be good
Bruh - replace this tire 🔥🔥
Just thinking, regarding the rim itself. Maybe it'd be a good idea to Dremel or lightly grind down or file down the sharp parts, or smooth out the whole divot, the idea being to remove any stress risers? No experience with auto wheels, but stress risers are a concern on certain make, brand, or design of bicycle crankset spiders. Some are prone to stress risers between the individual arms, usually made of aluminum. Same concern with certain aluminum handlebars and stems.
Get some fix a flat and thicken it from the inside
Personally.... Id just buy a whole new car
What shop told u it's fine... Def don't ever take a vehicle back to them ever.. lol
When your wife borrows the car for 3 minutes.
I wouldn't call that fine tbh. 🫠
Itll buff put some rubber cement glue it back
Gorilla glue it lol.
it's not
It’s not fine.
Your alloy wheel is fucked and so it the tyre wall is comprised
It’s your car, order a new rim & get a tire if you want too.
Wife driving your car again?
Maybe there's some kind of rubber adhesive to repair that? Depends how thick that side wall is though, if it's kinda thin under that gouge I wouldn't trust it but I'm not sure how thin or thick that is
I have 2 tires that have this, been driving on them for over a year and no issues other than the balance being whacky
It's fine. Happened twice to me it is ok.
