Responsible-Panic239

Confirmed. There are at least 115 people in Ontario incapable of following simple advice.

Neuraxis

Tip of the iceberg my friend

okay_then_

Dog I dunno if you remember COVID but that number is WAY higher than 115

sayerofstuffs

There’s a vaccine in the works and Canada has approved $100 trillion for donation to Pfizer

WhipTheLlama

There is about [$82.6 trillion in the world right now](https://www.gobankingrates.com/money/economy/how-much-money-is-in-the-world/), so Canada giving Pfizer $100 trillion sounds completely accurate /s

alexefi

May be they talking in zimbabve dollars.

polkarooo

There's a vaccine for stupidity? Worth every penny if it eliminates the Free dumb convoyers.

Summer20232023

Ever wonder where we be if people hadn’t got the vaccine?

J7W2_Shindenkai

theyre all driving down King St right now

Chairsofa_

Seriously haha. So many drivers ignoring the traffic rules/force right and running lights

chaobreaker

To be fair, there were a lot of scammers exploiting people’s FOMO by selling counterfeit eclipse glasses. They even caught Canadian Tire and another big store selling them.

Scarlet-Begonias108

It was MORE than 115

Ok_Procedure4993

I'm honestly surprised there's only been 118 reported cases. I'd thought there would be at least a couple thousand.

alreadychosed

It was cloudy.

waterloograd

Where I was, it was thin clouds. So we could see the sun with our bare eyes but not with eclipse glasses on. We weren't sure if that meant we could look at it or not. We took some quick glances and used cameras instead.

WhichFish888

Sameee I kept putting on and taking off my glasses cause I couldn’t see it

Zestyclose-Beach1792

This is exactly what happened with me. Couldn't see shit with the glasses. I'm partially blind now, but whatever.

FredPSmitherman

When is it ever safe to look directly at the sun? Or run with scissors or stick your hand in fire?

hypnoderp

Southern Ontario's is big and clouds are local. Full sun where I was.

proxyproxyomega

118 that admitted, rest are pretending everything is fine

LeatherMine

## Could you write bigger please?

Wholesome_Serial

_"No-one admits to chosen blindness, they simply complain when they trip while chewing gum, deciding for the seventy-seventh time that there's something wrong with the world and not their poor habits. Of course, by this time they're crossing Yonge Street against the light and expecting physics isn't going to be mean to them because they forgot their house keys again."_ _"Reckoned pity isn't feeling badly, but a triage nurse recording the time and a cheap, practical coffin."_

fairmaiden34

I feel like the people who didn't wear glasses are the same people who don't trust doctors. They won't go to anyone that would be reporting this.

LeatherMine

The raw unadulterated full-odour eclipse improved my vision, tyvm

crujones43

imagine if it hadn't been cloudy

Overall_Cover_1543

As someone who’s experienced a detached retina, I take no amusement in this, even if the damage was self-inflicted. Those 115 people are in for a very scary experience, and I sincerely hope they’re as lucky as I was.

yawaramin

Damn, that's one of my biggest fears. I hope I never have to deal with that.

Overall_Cover_1543

Are retinal and macular damage not the primary consequences of staring at the eclipse unprotected?

ethereal3xp

Warning: "Don't look at directly" 115 cases of eye damage: "Uuuh OK. F^#^ that advice... I'm going to look at it directly... what do they know" Newsofthestupid

arahman81

Either that, or scam glasses.

PM_ME__RECIPES

My natural squinting will protect me from the sun's fury.

National-Golf-4231

We call that the "safety squint" in construction.

Rich_Handsome

And a bunch of machine shops I've worked at...

Rich_Handsome

It worked for Donald Trump, didn't it?

alexefi

EeeeeeeeEhhhhhhhh...

kooks-only

Literally saw a comment on the sixbuzz post that was “yeah but how many heart problems from the vax? Don’t ever trust their numbers!” Definitely one of the 115.

WhipTheLlama

And they weren't just glancing at the sun. You need to stare at it for about a minute before permanent damage is done. These idiots were out there just staring at the sun for a while.

yukonwanderer

I thought any exposure was bad

WhipTheLlama

A few seconds probably won't do any harm at all, but it usually takes longer than you think for permanent damage to occur. The major problem with an eclipse is that it's easy to look at the sun for a long time.

[deleted]

Literally Everybody else: "DONT LOOK AT THE SUN, YOULL FUCK UP YOUR EYES!"   These 115: "You can't tell me how to live my life"

czchlong

There will never be a solution for stupidity

cr38tive79

No cure in sight

involmasturb

Blind hatred of sound scientific advice

EstablishmentNo5994

You can try you best to idiot proof things but the world is always making a better idiot

alexefi

Two things are infinite uniberse and people stupidity, but we still not 100% sure about first one..

mcs_987654321

Out of 15M people, that feels like a pretty reasonable (on that doesn’t at all make me despair for humanity). Hell, I got the official astronomy society glasses and followed instructions exactly, and still had some eye strain so can imagine how easily some slight variation might lead to damage. Meh: humans gonna human.

Scarlet-Begonias108

How thick are the lenses on your astronomy society glasses? Those solar eclipse glasses they were handing out, look oddly familiar to 3D glasses I would use to look at comics in the newspaper as a kid🤓

mcs_987654321

Oh, same old-timey 3D style glasses, just got the ones that were vetted and sold by the astronomy society.

QuercusAperol

I honestly freaked out the day after because I wore the glasses and my eyes felt very sore. Was worried I had messed up but good to know other people experienced the same thing

TorontoBoris

115 people pulled a Trump..

LIFE_IS_AN_ANIME

rent free

OrbAndSceptre

In other news, 115 dumbasses have been identified in Ontario…

winkledorf

IF ONLY THE GOVERNMENT WARNED US !!!![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|scream)

FitPhilosopher3136

Natural selection at work.

the_zit_remedyy

Doesn’t stop them from breeding.

ImKrispy

***People looking at the clouds not seeing shit***.... MY EYES MUST BE DAMAGED

TeddingtonMerson

That’s what the Big Eclipse Glasses fraudsters want you to believe!

not_likely_today

115 people awarded with a lifetime of eye damage.

Raassh

FYI - this is not a reasonable representation of the harm done, as this includes patients who were diagnosed with dry eye after the eclipse (very benign)….the relevant and blinding diagnosis is solar retinopathy and this article does not mention the number of reported cases (it would be far less than 115)

Element_905

And that’s with it being quite cloudy most places…

NightDisastrous2510

How much warning does one need?

Rich_Handsome

More than what they were given. Some people need to be restrained and/ or confined for their own safety and protection.

yawaramin

Is it just me or is it really not worth the risk of looking up at an eclipse even with the certified safety glasses on lol. I mean you can stare at the ground and the trees/streets/buildings/whatever for a few minutes and admire the darkness on the land while it lasts, why take even a tiny risk of permanent eye damage. Just look at pictures of the eclipse afterwards if you want to know what it looked like.

UWGWFTW

How could Justin Trudeau do this?

Bobbyoot47

Not exactly [SHOCKING](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSgwBMu7PI5ZRNqlb5eSlRiAgD7uRhWd_lEew&usqp=CAU).

owlblvd

when i was a kid i used to stare at the sun sometimes. for like 5-10 seconds at a time. i dont know why. i think my brain wasnt fully developed. but can someone explain why my eyes arent damaged? i mean, i cant see red flags in people but otherwise i have 15/20 vision. is the light around the moon during an eclipse that much more concentrated?

WildWeaselGT

The sun was bright. It caused your pupils to contract as much as possible, limiting the potential for damage. With an eclipse, there’s just as much of the damaging stuff, but very little of the brightness that makes your eyes protect themselves.

noodleexchange

Your irises contract in full sun and let very little visible light in. Thus, very little UV light. Subtract the visible light, and the UV (that mostly comes from the corona surrounding the visible disc of the Sun) pours in as your irises dilate (open up)

tplrcan

115 idiots

ForRedditMG

Lol idiots.

QuarantineToughGuy

Why y'all calling them all dumb? What about the people who probably got shitty scam glasses and didn't know any better.

fallen_d3mon

Don't Google "Man City 115".

youngboomer62

Reminds me of a saying we had when I was doing industrial safety training. You can't fix stupid.

Rageniv

How many of those were little kids (like pre-school or JK/SK) that wasn’t mature enough to understand how serious the situation was?!

edthesmokebeard

What's the problem? Treatment will be free.

Popular-Love785

natural selection at its finest

poco68

Darwin

Dowew

to be honest this is way less than I expected.

MrPlowthatsyourname

Uh oh spaghetti-oh

Dry-Character-4404

Fucking Trudeau!

Hobbes-76

Natural selection at work, this is how nature gets rid of weak genes

fibo_11235

solar eclipse glasses are scam like covid shots. stupid corporations...!

Scarlet-Begonias108

I saw an article on Reddit, saying that in the USA, on the Monday of the eclipse, there was a “last minute recall” on the solar eclipse glasses that they were handing out. And better yet, parents and teachers handed them out to children. Now can someone explain to me the difference between the solar eclipse glasses and 3D glasses? Should have been wearing welding helmets 🤷🏼‍♀️

EmiEmimiru

I looked directly at it with my eyes and it was fine. In reality, if there is moderate cloud cover, you can look at it with your bare eyes and be just fine.

arahman81

Also could have just bought the glasses from a reputable seller weeks ago...not like the eclipse just sneaked up.

EmiEmimiru

I first didn’t think much of the eclipse and wasn’t bothered. Then as the date got close I started getting FOMO. By the day of, it was too late the get the glasses. A bunch of people had glasses which I borrowed, but with the heavy cloud cover in downtown Toronto, you literally couldn’t see anything with glasses. We all just looked at it with our bear eyes through the heavy cloud cover.

Zestyclose-Beach1792

Not sure why you're being downvoted, I saw plenty of people doing that.

aneditor_

great advice
